It's not my preferred activity to pan a local independent business. The last time Dear Hubby and I stopped in was not as good as the time before, though. The food was just so-so, and maybe I just chose wrong? The name "California Bowl" to me doesn't suggest a particular type of Asian cuisine, so I was confused about there not being dumplings. The only kind they really have are the shape of potstickers, but they are only fully fried. I ended ordering the Shrimp Udon, and it was just okay. Challenging to eat without getting broth everywhere, actually. DH and I did share an order of the fried dumplings and they were too well cooked for my preference. DH wasn't in the mood for sushi, but I think that would have been a better choice here that the noodles. I'd personally like more vegetables as part of the offerings. The restaurant was clean. Service was okay, if on the austere side. I was still craving the food from my new local favorite place when we left after our short visit to California Bowl. read more

I was house/dog sitting nearby and usually like to try the local spots near me and this one popped up and my daughter said YES! I'm glad she did because they were close to closing and we found the restaurant tucked in a little corner of a not-so-busy plaza with plenty of parking. We got plenty of food for like 5 people because our eyes were bigger than our stomachs. We tried all of it and had left overs too. It tasted great fresh and the next day. The rolls were great and the bento box was huge. We definitely want to make the drive to go back and try it again. I love this "mom and pop" small restaurant. The food comes out quickly, tastes amazing, and is always fresh. It's been around forever and they are very generous with their portion sizes for the price. Their gyoza sauce is delicious, it's sweet and very addictive. My only complaint is that the man at the front isn't very friendly and always seems very reluctant when I ask for extra gyoza sauce. I've mentioned multiple times that I'm willing to pay for additional sauce, but he still begrudgingly gives it to me. It does make me hesitate to go in as often because I feel like I have to practically beg for enough sauce to fully enjoy my meal. Aside from that, everyone else has always been very nice and polite. When you go to a teriyaki place the first time, you never know what you'll get. it's a bit of a crap-shoot, especially if you're getting teriyaki beef: will it be sliced sirloin steak, or just a pile of fat and gristle? This place served a totally decent beef bowl, lean meat (a little but of gristle) and a generous portion of it; good sauce, not too sweet or too spicy; veggies steamed right, just a little crisp. Altogether tasty and a good meal. I definitely recommend the food. The only downside was the guy who took my order. He was unfriendly to the point of being almost hostile. It seemed like I offended him by pausing to read the menu. He was so surly I almost walked out. Maybe I just caught him on a bad day, but if not, he's probably the owner, because if he was an employee I think his attitude would get him fired. read more

I have been coming here off and on over the years. The chicken bowl remains a good value and they don't skimp on anything. The spicy tuna is solid for a fast casual spot. My order is ready and correct when I arrive and they provide all the sauces, utensils, and napkins without having to ask. Came in with low expectations based on reviews. We were looking for something quick and simple. Got behind the counter was really grumpy. Bill was pricey for fast food. Rolls had way too much rice that stuck to plate resulting in sushi falling apart. No plates for sharing had to ask for napkins and got 3 thin one that wouldn't hold a sneeze. Great spot for a chicken bowl! Sushi is pretty good too. My fiance and I usually come here when we arent feeling like cooking at home and want something of quality. Never get upset stomachs or bad food here. Chicken bowl with less rice more veggies is the way to go! I think the standard way is Alot of rice. If you want a ton of rice go for it, but I'd prefer more veggies. We recently did 2 bowls like this and a k-9 roll. My lady ate about 1/4 of the roll, so I was perfectly full after a bowl and some of that roll. No room for any sweet dessert. Seems like this business has been around since 2005 and I'm glad they made it through the recent crap of "shut downs" and no dinning indoors joke of a "rule". My little brother calls this place "the yummy Japanese place." I think I'd qualify his nickname a little before agreeing with him. It's more like "the middle- of- the- road but pretty good for Simi/ affordable/convenient lunch option Asian place," to me. There's nothing really wrong with that. I don't think this place is trying to be particularly Japanese, and it's obviously not trying to be fancy. Customer service isn't their strong suit, but my last phone order to them was handled very professionally and quickly, which was great. The food here isn't really that memorable. The sushi rolls I've tried are maybe a half-star above what you might buy at the grocery store. My siblings REALLY like the chicken teriyaki bowl, but I'm not a huge fan. It's just fine. read more

I've been coming here 2-3x a month lately and the food is always fresh and full of flavor. The cashier is really nice and often times remembers what you ordered the last time. Nice little hole in the wall that serves your basic Japanese/Korean sushi menu. It includes sushi, ramen, bowls, soba. I ordered the basic chicken bowl with brown rice. It's a nice sized bowl of teriyaki chicken, veggies, heaped on top of brown rice. The chicken and veggies were typical. Nothing fancy, however the brown rice was a little mushy. I got the feeling that there isn't a high demand for brown rice (it's an extra $1.50), so it might have been sitting in the rice warmer for some time. The food is good but alsoexpensive and without fail you will have to deal with that miserable moody cashier. Today he got upset at me for getting some sanitizer on the receipt because he said it damages the paper. Well then have a "clean cup" and a "dirty cup" like a lot of other businesses do like the Chinese place by my house. That way, don't have to be grossed out touching your germy pens. The $13 chicken teriyaki box used to come with me so complimentary when you dined in but now they want to charge $2.50 for it. Keep it. I guess I'll ask for a separate plate and they said they don't have any plates, just to go containers. All food is served to go even if you dine in. Annoying. I have been eating at California Bowl for more than a decade. I was there when "Kelly" was there going to nursing school, and it is a true small family owned and run business. Their food is amazing. So the cashier is a little, testy, deal with it. Poor guy is there 7 days a week, give him a break. Their food is the freshest and best there is in Simi. Whether you get a chicken bowl, or sushi, you will be happy. Your stomach will be happy. Your day will be better. Go there and eat. Order for take out. It is all good. Fill your life with good Chi. Go where the cops go, they know what is good food. You'll almost always see a cop car there during the lunch hour. They even have a roll called the PD K-9. Eat, live, love. My feelings are torn about this place. But let's start with the good. My family and I come here often for the only reason that the food is good. It's reasonably priced and we like the taste of every dish we've had from them so far. This includes their teriyaki, tempura, ramen, and some of their sushi as well. So I would definitely recommend that you try this place simply for the food. Now the bad...the bald Asian guy that works the register needs to work on his people/customer service skills. It's bad to the point where it can ruin the whole dining experience there. Almost coming off rude. Some reviewers have stated he's the owner. I can't vouch for that that but if that were the case, I highly recommend that he hires someone else to work the register because he's really doing a disservice to this restaurant. They do not have the best sushi I've ever had, but I'm giving a 4 star rating based on the cleanliness, speed, service & ease of ordering. Plus, they have NEVER messed up an order. From what I've heard from others, this is a chain restaurant & is all over the Valley, but this is the first time I'd ever heard of it.
