We tried the Red Dragon roll, California hand roll with soy paper, Albacore delight sushi and a Bento box with Teriyaki chicken sashimi. The items we tried were all good, however, service was a bit slow. Staff were all nice, but seemed to be very busy since this sushi spot had AYCE sushi also. So if I was rating the flavor of the food alone I'd give 5 stars. But i have to give an honest overall review and have to say the service lacked. Super nice but not on it. The little bowl of ginger they serve had a long hair in it. They replaced it quickly but it was gross. Then we ordered our sushi and my husband prefers cooked while I prefer raw. The cooked sushi all came out meanwhile I waited for my poke sushi. Finally I asked and the woman said she forgot. So by the time my sushi came my husband was done. It was annoying bc if he waited his would've gotten cold and then he waited around for me after. It wasn't very busy at all it was 2pm on a week day so I wonder how they do on busy days. I dined in as a solo diner and was sat at the Sushi bar before the dinner rush. I had an entire show right before my eyes, and I really enjoyed watching the chefs create such beautiful masterpieces. The presentation of the Unagi Don was incredible along with the Tiger Roll. Both items ordered were decent for what you can find in Simi Valley. We didn't spend too long waiting, and the atmosphere of the restaurant is great. It's comforting and popping, so you know it's worth it. Service was great too; they're fast and helpful. The owner was really sweet too and gave us free service for their new yakitori dish which comes with the original chili seasoning and spicy sweet chili sauce, both are great pairings with the chicken which was also super juicy and flavorful. I'm glad to see this restaurant getting good business. My partner and I go here as our sushi go-to spot when we don't want all you can eat and want just good quality sushi. The staff is kind and patient if we need more time on the menu. They also can help recommend items to you and can accommodate changes when possible to menu items. We usually order shrimp tempura, couple rolls, and maybe some nigiri rolls. That's plenty enough food for 2 people. It's in a shared parking lot near the supermarket. So there is plenty of parking. The place was packed (always a good sign) and the service was on point from the moment we walked in to the moment we paid. Super friendly staff, clean dining area, and a sushi bar if you prefer counter seating. Menu had tons of options, but we went with the Three Amigo roll, Hot Night roll, and a bento box with rice, salad, and miso soup. Everything was delicious--even the miso soup and salad. I went to Hikari on January 31, 2025 with my husband because we were starving and craving Japanese food. I lived in Japan for 10 years, and I've been in the U.S. for about a year now -- and honestly, most of the Japanese restaurants we try don't feel authentic, so we usually don't go back. But Hikari really surprised us in the best way. We ordered garlic edamame, sashimi, gyoza (fried dumplings), and fried salmon with teriyaki sauce. Everything tasted fresh and flavorful, and it reminded me of the food I used to enjoy in Japan. The atmosphere has an izakaya vibe -- cozy, relaxed, and welcoming. The staff were also very kind. One lady was going around to different tables and offered us some fish (I can't remember exactly if it was yellowtail or salmon), and she told us it was "on the house" and wished us a Happy New Year. That gesture meant a lot -- we didn't expect something like that, especially at such a nice sushi restaurant. We really enjoyed our lunch, the food, and the people. First the waitress gave me dirty looks when i left her a tip for a pick up, then the eel was waayy undercooked, i even asked for it well done i tried to crisp it up in my broiler but nope it was nasty and under the eel meat was a thick piece of slimy rubbery fat. the carpaccio was edible . the golden tiger roll was disgusting. the avocado was BLACK . the Spicy mayo was a weird yellow color not "pinkish" so i didn't take a chance . Great place to celebrate your birthday. The owner played a loud music to celebrate our birthday event while the whole staff joined in, wow! The Dragon Roll, Eskolar, Tuna Rolls, Baked Scallops were fresh and tasted sweet and creamy; they practically melts in your mouth. The lady cashier and perhaps owner was very friendly, staff attended to our needs like family and the restaurant was a perfect place to spend dinner and celebrate too. This review is for their tipping calculations while you use your credit card. I'm aware they have 50% off on some of their rolls that's priced at $23-$30, but their 15% / 18% / 20% tip is based on the regular price before the discount. For example four rolls at $25 each equates to $100, after discount the bill is only $50, but their machines shows 15% is $15. Should only be $7.50 for tip at 15%. My family and I have been loyal customers for almost a decade now, so it genuinely breaks my heart to write this review. My mom recently visited (10/28/24) for happy hour and when she asked for to-go boxes for her leftovers, the server denied her. When she asked to speak to the manager for an explanation, they said that people have been taking advantage of the restaurant's discounted happy hour prices so the rule of no taking leftovers for their once "all-you-can-eat" deal also applies to their happy hour. However, *nowhere* on that menu was that rule mentioned (as attached below) and I personally have never heard of a restaurant not allow their customers to take home happy hour leftovers.
