I come here every couple of months. The food is always something I look forward to. I always go in as the drive through line is always busy. I'd rather just sit and eat. The place always has fresh veggies and all their got sauces out for self service. It's clean and simple. I probably would have ignored the opening of California Burrito in this neighborhood as I don't come over here much anymore but curiosity won me over and I made a special trip to try it. What got my curiosity was because there is another location very close to my house that will eventually open and an acquaintance of Steve's praised it as she is originally from California where this chain is based. I have to say I was more impressed with my meal here than I thought I would be. I got a bean tostada which I enjoyed and some beef tacos. The beef tacos weren't bad but kind if had a smoky taste that I wasn't sure if I liked but I liked the meal well enough. I convinced Steve to come with me for a second meal and once again I got a bean tostada but I got a potato taco when it came to deciding what taco I wanted and I liked that better. Of course living up to it's namesake this restaurant is all about burritos and there is quite a variety off them. I saw a Chile Relleno Burrito that really caught my eye and probably will someday get it. I don't get burritos as often as I once did but I realize in order to delve into this burrito I would need to be pretty hungry as the size of it seems large. There is a nice condiment bar here also so you can lime slices, pickled carrot, radishes, cucumber , a spicy slaw and various kinds of salsas and sauces. My two visits here were positive and the drive up is open 24 hours which would be very convenient for us since on occasion we are out a bit later and most other restaurants just closed, leaving little options to go on for grabbing something to eat. read more

Wowee nice crispy meat but moist at the same time. Hubby tried the 2 enchiladas and they were good too. They have a little salsa bar with the reg stuff. Pickeled vegis, cuke slices, several salsas. I came by the night after their grand opening -- around 10-11 PM -- hoping for a legit California-style taco shop experience, especially with "California" in the name. I ordered takeout, and here's how it went: Carnitas Taco: Served in a small hard-shell takeout container with two corn tortillas, a scoop of pico de gallo, and a bit of guacamole. The carnitas were dry, rigid, and cold -- like they'd been microwaved. The texture and flavor were both off. I expected juicy, well-seasoned carnitas that paired smoothly with the guac and pico. Churro: Made fresh, but filled with a custard-like cream that just didn't work. I was hoping for a warm, crispy churro like the ones you find in SoCal -- this wasn't it. Pollo Asado Fries: The fries were overly browned and tasted overcooked, with little to no flavor. The chicken was salty, unevenly chopped, and didn't resemble pollo asado. Guacamole was maybe a tablespoon, sour cream about the same, and cheese was minimal. The tray was only about 2/3 full and mostly filled with overdone fries. Overall, the dish lacked seasoning, balance, and presentation. Pollo Asado Burrito: The tortilla had a strange, flaky texture. The chicken was again overly salty and lacked seasoning. Finally got a chance to check it out this past week. It is VERY Americanized but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The torta I had was very filling and very easy to eat spice wise. The meat was a little more wet that I liked but I had let it sit for a bit while I did a bit of shopping at Grocery Outlet across from them. I do like a bit more zip in my food but it was very edible otherwise. My wife liked it more than other places because the spices are alá cart and you put your own on. I like mine cooked in but we both agreed the meat was soft enough for someone without teeth (like me) to gobble it down without issues. The Toothless Taster strikes gold again! read more

We usually go to El Sabor, a few block away on Mildred street. The comparison- el sabor makes their own tortilla. When I asked the Cal Burrito worker, they had no idea where they even came from. el Sabor offers breakfast chicken burritos. Cal Burrito does not offer a chicken option. Enchiladas were not even hot- cheese wasn't melted and the sauce is canned stuff you can get at the store. I tried the Tacoma Burrito the last time and while it was piping hot, the meat was not seasoned, fries soggy and full of chewy fat. I couldn't finish it, it was that disgusting and disappointing. 2nd visit to this place 12/15/25, they have a bunch of clowns that work at this location. No better place to piss someone off. Walk in, line cook sees me, makes eye contact. Girl at counter has back turned, hunched over at register, on phone talking to someone. She turns head to see me, goes back to conversation, starts laughing about something to person on phone. I wait a few a few mins, then I throw my hands up, when still no acknowledgment if I would love to order food. I look at line cook again, expecting him to say something to the girl. Food is pretty affordable. They have 1.89 tacos on "Taco Tuesdays." Lots of other items are pretty reasonable. A little heavy handed on the cilantro sometimes, but it is something you can request to be omitted. What is the difference? When we visit a sit-down Mexican restaurant like Mazatlán or El Toro, the food always tastes fresh. The meats are moist, the seasoning is on point, and the flavors are always as we expect. So why in the world, when we eat at some place like California Burrito, isn't the same fresh taste and flavor present? The tortillas taste off and seem stale. The meats are usually dry and chewy. My burritos are full of excess fat and gristle. These are supposed to be fast paced Mexican food spots that offer good food quickly. Not necessarily, fast food restaurants. Its literally the same nine ingredients used over and over and over in different configurations, so I ask again. What is the difference? Why do some of the restaurants have amazing dishes while others like this one use the same ingredients and have dishes that I don't want to return for? I don't understand. Braised and sometimes ground beef, pulled pork, chicken, cheese, crema, pico, guac, onions and peppers and beans! That's literally IT! I've had three different burritos from here and I don't want to try anything else. The beef and bean burrito is simply that. Just dry shredded beef and some very dry refried beans. No cheese, no sauce, no crema. Bland and gross. No thank you. The Adobada which is marinated pork and pico de gallo. Dry pork in gritty seasonings with a scoop of pico de gallo. I mean they're a decent price but really? Do you want a 2-ingredient burrito? The third burrito I had was the chicken which on the menu says chicken only but to my surprise, it had beans and pico de gallo too. I take my burritos for lunch the next day at work so I would like to leave off the pico de gallo, because it's pretty disgusting when you reheat it in a microwave, but the menu isn't clear about what's in your burrito. Add all of this to the fact that nothing really tastes good nor fresh and that whoever is working won't know how to communicate with you in order to properly sort out your order and I don't think I'll be going back. I can't understand how a place with this many issues can have so many locations across the country. Well, I have an idea, but I must keep that to myself out of decency. Once upon a time here in Washington, we had a place named planet burrito and was all of the things that California Burrito is not. Then Taco Del Mar came and wiped them out and now Chipotle and Q'Doba have taken over the market with overpriced propaganda that makes us think we're eating healthy. First time here for us. Ordered carne asada fries and a chili relleno combo plate. Drive through was quick no delay, price reasonable. Food was hot. Carne asada fries were pretty good, asada little dry and French fries ok but tasty. Chili rellenos were made with a nice fresh pasilla chili (seeds not removed but that's ok with me since I don't mind a little heat and pasillas are not overwhelming). They were buried in sour cream, pico de gallo and avocado which made them a little hard to find in the plate but added to the flavor. Beans and rice were good. Flour tortillas were hard and dry wrapped in paper and foil. Another friend same night had tacos she said were pretty bad so it sounds like food is still uneven quality. Hope they can improve this. We will try again at some point but still like El Sabor and the taco truck at Orchard and Central better at this point. read more

California Burrito and Taco Shop -- Review California Burrito and Taco Shop has the bones of a solid fast-casual spot--hefty burritos, all-day breakfast, and a wide-ranging menu--but our experience was hampered by technical frustrations and underwhelming food. Let's start with the website. Their website does not list the menu. Why? Why do businesses pay for websites that offer no practical information, then direct customers elsewhere to find what they came for? Inconveniencing potential new customers is never a good marketing strategy. In this case, not only is the menu missing, but most of the site's links are broken or dysfunctional. The Instagram link redirects to a Wix Insta page, the Facebook link loops back to the homepage, and the "Shop" and "Contact" links do the same. While the restaurant's social pages do exist, you'd only find them by manually searching--an unnecessary hassle, especially for a new restaurant with an extensive menu. As a result, Several cars were camped in front of the drive-thru menu boards, clearly stuck trying to figure out what to order--something that could be avoided entirely with a functioning website. Because this was our first visit, we ordered a sampler spread to share: * Tacoma Burrito (steak, French fries, sour cream, cheese) with guacamole on the side * Jumbo chorizo taco * Jumbo birria taco * Morning Macho Burrito (ham, bacon, sausage, and egg) with added potatoes The Burritos Both burritos were generously sized--easily shareable for two or even three people--but quality varied. The breakfast burrito was fine (hard to mess up eggs, meat, potatoes, and cheese), but the Tacoma Burrito was disappointing. The fries were soggy, the steak dry and cut like kibble, and the overall flavor was muted. Instead of the savory, layered punch you'd expect from a California-style burrito, the textures clashed and the dish landed flat. The Tacos We tried two jumbo tacos: chorizo and birria. For context: * A good chorizo taco should be juicy, fatty, and spiced with depth--ideally rich, slightly smoky, and with some heat. * Birria should be slow-braised, dripping with flavor, and ideally served with consommé. The meat should be tender and deeply seasoned. Unfortunately, neither taco hit the mark. * The flavourless chorizo was extremely overcooked--crunchy and crispy from the flattop, but dry and devoid of the richness that defines good chorizo. It felt more like a topping than a filling. The bits barely held together on the cold taco shells, and more than half fell out while eating, with nothing fatty or moist to anchor them. * The birria had a more promising flavor when tasted on its own, but the moment it met the taco shell, it lost all impact. The shell was cold and slightly damp--likely steamed and left to sit--leaving the whole taco soggy and flavor-diluted. To make matters worse, when cut in half to share, one of us got meat, the other a mouthful of fat--and not the good kind. The Guacamole Serviceable, but sloppy. While mostly mashed, the guac came with a whole chunk of avocado--roughly half of a small one--tucked into the cup. The way it was packed in , there's no way it wouldn't have been known. We ended up slicing it ourselves to top our tacos. More messy than appetizing. What Worked * The staff were polite, professional, and attentive--reading back our order and clearly explaining upcharges and modifications. * The red and green sauces were both excellent--nicely spicy, flavorful, and exactly the kick most of the food was missing. The portions were small (in tiny sauce cups), but the quality was there. Final Verdict California Burrito and Taco Shop may have potential, but it's not there yet. A non-functional website and broken links create a frustrating ordering process from the outset. And while portion sizes are generous and the staff is friendly, the food lacked seasoning, cohesion, and care in execution. Soggy fries, dry meat, cold taco shells, and inconsistent prep added up to a forgettable meal. Maybe things will improve with time, but based on this visit, we won't be hurrying back.
