    Bonus!

This is the only nursery I order from. Trial and error over the years taught me a lot. This is the second time that I got a bonus plant with the one I ordered. I will never expect it, but it's awesome when it happens. Since this is a genuine nursery, seeds drop amongst other plants and pop up later. I have leaves similar to a spatula that started growing with my Sawtooth Venus flytrap. I'm elated!

Their response to my pictures and notice that the plants were less than healthy at arrival.

The owner called and apologized for the shape of the plants I received and said he changed out the plugs for the future customers. Appreciate receiving MUCH BETTER looking replacement plants.

After posting my review, I was actually able to get in contact with the California Carnivores and had everything sorted out and cleared up! They sent me a new Lilac Lollipop Pinguicula free of charge to replace my damaged ones! Highly recommend them! A bit expensive compared to some others but you're getting great service and amazing plants, even potted which isn't too common. As a newcomer to the hobby it's really helped me get deeper into without scaring me away!

One year ago, I thought I'd look into keeping houseplants as a pandemic hobby. So I did some research on YouTube and stumbled upon California Carnivores' excellent videos on the care and culture of carnivorous plants. After watching a few of their videos, I was instantly hooked, remembering fondly of my childhood fascination with Venus flytraps, which I always promptly killed to my chagrin. So I got my first plant from Cal Carns, a Dionaea muscipula "King Henry" and it was a beautiful, small plant. It successfully came out of dormancy in the Spring of this year, 2022, and has grown into a huge monster of a plant over the summer, befitting it's name. Most of Cal Carn's plants are juvenile or younger but old enough to withstand the shipping process. I saw some reviews earlier that stated the plants are small and expensive. There's a reason for that. The kinds of plants you'll find in big box stores are mass cloned or seed grown "run of the mill" type plants. Your "typical" plant so to speak. And thus, these are cheaper. Nothing wrong with that. I have one. As well as a "typical from Cal Carns, which is also inexpensive. The kinds of clones and seed grown plants from nurseries like California Carnivores are of higher quality, more rare, or are highly desirable by collectors. With that said, I need to mention that I'm not only impressed by Cal Carn's quality plants, service, and outstanding shipping practices, but I'm also impressed by their continuing educational videos and social media posts of their beautiful photos of their plants. Also, I met these folks in person at the Bay Area Carnivorous Plant Society Show and Sale and they couldn't be nicer folks. To date, in this past year, I've purchased 60 plants from California Carnivores from "cheap" Venus fly trap typicals to pricey Nepenthes tropical pitcher plants and everything in between including North American pitcher plants, temperate and subtropical sundews, pygmy sundews, a dozen specialty cultivars of Venus flytraps, Cephalotus pitcher plants, and some non-carnivorous plants. 100% satisfied with every aspect of my purchases and learning from California Carnivores. These folks literally saved my sanity during this pandemic and helped create a lifelong hobby for me. I'm forever indebted to California Carnivores. They can take my money any time!

I was so excited to get a bigger Venus Flytrap as I thought. Was very disappointed with what I got. So basically you can buy the exact size from Walmart for 6$ are you can pay the 28$ that they sell for. Actually the Walmart Flytrap has more buds then the 28$ one. Would not recommend this place for Venus Flytrap. Picture one on left 28$ one on right 6$

My step daughter saw a decoration at a store and asked about it.( Venus fly trap) we talked about how the plant eats bugs. She asked if there were more plants that eat bugs. I said I'm sure there are I don't know about them but I know a place that does. Took the short drive out to south Sebastopol. We walked in an they have fake displays of very large versions of carnivorous plants. We were greeted by a gentlemen in the back asked if he could help. Explained we wanted to learn more about the carnivorous plants. He directed us to the showroom that had plaques explaining most the plant varieties displayed. I attached photos of the most interesting ones. Very informative. We got to one part near the employee area and it had a funky smell to it- so we finished up quickly and thanked the guy. Asked him briefly about the smell. He said it's probably a dead rodent as there are weasels in the area. Also mentioned that the carnivorous plant list has been added a lot over the few decades he's been curating them. If you're wanting to have a plant that works and keeps bugs away then I suggest you learn and purchase from California Carnivores.

I received the Deluxe Plant Beginner's Bog Kit as a Father's Day gift in excellent condition and had a great time planting it by following the instructions. The plants are doing quite well as you can see by the enclosed photo #1. However, there is one plant growing in the center that I cannot identify. It is shown in a 2nd Photo #2 is all green and growing quite rapidly. Could you please identify this plant for me, as it must have been in the soil?

I purchased two new carnivorous plants from them after watching a ton of their videos on YouTube helped me learn a ton about my plants really happy with what I got. This is my first nepenthes, I started my collection with a sun dew and some purple pitcher plants I got at my local nursery. They came to me nicely packaged and I transplanted my butter wart Into a new pot overall recommend their plants.

I ordered a large mature division Cobra Lily (Darlingtonia californica) because I have some myself and wanted even more. The plant I received from them was beautiful, a deep red (meaning it had been in true sunlight always) with no brown. It was meticulously packed but easy to unpack and was indeed large. You can very much tell that they know their carnivorous plants and care about how you receive them. I've grown Carnivorous plants for awhile and California Carnivores are wonderful ambassadors to the extremely beautiful and truly fascinating world of carnivorous plants. I would strongly recommend them for any level of carnivorous plant gardener.

This is the place to come if you want to see a lot of carnivorous plants. We made the trip from Alameda, CA and it took a while to get there. The selection of plants is amazing, they even have the corpse plant baby plants. There is a section that is only a collection area and nothing is for sale. So many different types of plants, makes us jealous that we can only grow a select few plants in our home area. Sundews, Butterworts, Venus Fly Traps. We only had a problem getting someone to help us, we asked for help three times and was told that the other woman there would come to assist us, she never came to even talk with us. We definitely were ready to purchase if we had help. We decided to leave after walking around for over an hour. We went to a competitor in Half Moon Bay the next day and purchased there.

I searched most of the east bay and finally got a few recommendations from expert plant growers to head up to Sebastopol and visit Lone Pine Gardens. Almost an hour and a half drive and the entrance is just a gate off on Lone Pine with only a couple of places to even park on the narrow road. But definitely worth the drive if you're looking for a variety of Bonsai at different stages and for incredibly reasonable prices. Lone Pine has a fantastic variety of species, stages, and styles of Bonsai plants and trees. What I liked l most was the variety of prices and sizes. Most places charge an arms and a leg but an early bonsai here is close to half the price at other places. The bonus was the nice variety of succulents. A bit out of the way, but the best place to shop for bonsai and browse succulents and other potted plants.

This particular location has a terrific selection of most types of plants. Lots of edible stuff like veggie starts and fruiting bushes and trees. The majority of the available plants are mix of Mediterranean and CA native landscaping plants with a handful of the standard shrubs/trees you'll find at every nursery in the U.S. like crepe myrtles and ornamental conifers. Also tons of herbaceous flowering perennials ranging from 4" pots up to 5 gallons. Also, a great house plant selection! I also believe this spot deserves some serious credit for their selection of native plants. One of the only spots in California you can readily purchase 4" starts of native annuals as well as cryptic and rare perennials. Just a couple days ago, I saw they were selling tomcat clover! That is just too cool. I also just bought a ground cover cultivar o CA buckwheat I've never even heard of. They clearly have someone in their procurement department who knows a good deal about natives. In terms of dry goods, they have a wide variety of pottery as well as all your standard garden center goods such as fertilizers, pest control, irrigation equipment, and general gardening supplies. What really tickles me is their bulk seeds. They have a full hallway with containers on either side with scoopers where you can buy any Lb amount of these seeds. They have tons of landscaping and pasture grass seed as well as some neat cover crop and cover crop mixes. My only complaint about this section is that not all labels have the scientific names. Some do, which is great since you know exactly the species that is being sold. However, one of the erosion control mix listed an annual "California festuca" and a perennial "California festuca". Unsure what species are being sold or if they are actually CA natives. Ultimately not a big deal and I'm sure the staff would be happy to get me the details. BUT if I made the labels...I may include the scientific name ;) All in all, this store and its other locations are a shining light in a dim world of big box stores selling garbage. You truly can find whatever you need for your projects here. I aways stop in when I'm in the area and buy a handful of things. I'll be a customer for as long as they are around!

Many more very interesting trees, like a gold form Mugo pine, rare ginkgos, unique maples, bonsai stock trees, native oaks, elms. They even sell minerals and cute hand made paver stones that look like reds wood trunk slices.
