My siblings and I lost our father unexpectedly on June 3rd. He passed away while trail riding in Lake Arrowhead and was transported to the San Bernardino County Coroner. My siblings and I all live 60-90 minutes away and have never experienced anything like this, so needless to say, we didn't even know where to start - except to turn to google. We quickly came upon the website for California Cremation Centers (CCC), which we know now is also Mark B Shaw & Aaron Cremation and Burial Services. Funds were a factor in deciding which service to use, and CCC was less expensive than a few others, (including their own main site of Mark B Shaw, which I realized were connected later), and had mostly decent reviews so we proceeded with CCC. I feel that the quality of customer service we experienced was directly impacted by the fact that we signed a contract through the less expensive CCC branch of this funeral home. I understand that when purchasing a PRODUCT at a discount or low price, most of the time, you can expect to get what you pay for. However, I don't believe service should be affected so greatly. We were dealing with the EXACT same staff as mentioned in many of these reviews. There were errors on contracts, and I was not informed of what to expect and when. I had to call for updates, wait days for return calls, ask for changes to the contract, and remind them to take my payment. A simple explanation of the process in dealing with the coroner's office and then the cremation itself would have gone a long way in appeasing a grieving daughter. I had to question every action. I felt as if the staff here forgets that they may deal with this process on a daily basis, but for the majority of their customers this is the first time and a very difficult time at that. I do have to mention a positive...one of the staff was reassuring to me that they had some of my father's personal items that the coroner didn't release to us previously, and that I was very appreciative of. However, what was a little awkward when picking up these articles and the ashes, they had failed to divide the ashes as contracted, so they had to take them back and divide them while we waited. In the end, the process took a little over 3 weeks from start to finish. If you are still reading this, here is what I'd like for you to take away...1) If contracting service through California Cremation Centers, you will actually be dealing with Mark B Shaw & Aaron Burial Services, 2) Cremations are not done on site, prolonging the process, 3) You will need to be on top of the staff to guide you through the process, 4) The cost will be significantly higher than the rate they display on their website, think double. I know that I am an A-type personality, needing to know details, being kept informed, I have very high expectations...which is why I gave them a 3 instead of a lower rating. PS...if you are waiting on a Sheriff-Coroner's autopsy report and death certificates, I'm going on week 8. I don't believe this is controlled by CCC but it would have been nice to have been warned it could take months. **sigh** read more

When my wife was killed in a bicycling accident 6 days before Christmas, I was lucky enough to find California Cremation Centers and to work with Mr. Lewis Wasson. Mr. Wasson immediately took charge of the process after I provided the required information in an easy to understand set of forms on their website. From that point on, Lewis kept me informed every step of the way. He even took the time on Christmas Eve afternoon to call me before he was closing the office for the Holiday just to reassure me that all the paperwork had been approved and said that he was calling because he "didn't want me to worry" over Christmas. That kind of caring, sensitive attention is the hallmark of California Cremation Centers. Moreover, they are quietly efficient and professional. Even though I live in Culver City and their offices are in San Bernardino, all of the communication between us was by phone, email, and messaging so it was as if they were next door. CCC met every deadline and fulfilled every one of their promises to me. Finally, the good news is that they are ¬an extremely low-cost provider of cremation services. At a time when I was at the very beginning of experiencing a lifetime of terrible grief, CCC removed a huge burden from my shoulders by assuring that the cremation of my wife would be accomplished with care, dignity, and professionalism. Unfortunately for my family and I we did not have the pleasure of having the same "counselor" as the previous reviewers. We worked with Melvin. Melvin dropped the ball in one of the most serious ways, during the most devastating time in our lives. His neglectfulness and inattention caused my family a world of pain on top of what we've already had to endure. NOTHING can be done to make that right. This was the last time my father would ever see his only son and he made it very clear that he needed to see my brother one final time before he was cremated. He verbalized this and he filled out the paperwork with his initials and signature a week prior to see that this happened. On Friday, California Cremation Centers received the schedule for the cremations that were set to happen Monday morning. My brother's name was on that list and no one bothered calling my father to notify him. Monday morning came and the crematorium worker picked up my brother's body to start the process. CCC finally called to notify my father that his son was on the schedule to be cremated at 10am...in 30 minutes. My father told them he had not seen or ID'd the body as he was told he could. He said he was over an hour away and that he could not make it in the 30 minutes they gave him. He asked them to wait. They told him it was too late. Because of their oversight and their complete disregard, the cremation had already taken place. This awful place allowed this to happen because of their gross negligence. To them, all it is is paperwork and case numbers. In a time as delicate as this, you would think Melvin and the entire staff at California Cremation Centers would take a little more care with requests of the surviving family. My father may never have the closure he needs thanks to these people. read more

First off, 5 stars is no comparison to as good as it gets when during a crushing time in your life a complete stranger makes you feel so safe to leave your loved ones in their hands to allow you to deal with the devastation that just steam rolled over your life when losing a loved one. That man is Mr. Lewis Wasson. My brother at the age of 39 passed away. It was a very hard choice to decide to cremate my brother but once we did, what I thought was going to be a nightmare process stopped being a nightmare 10 mins after meeting Mr. Lewis Wasson.      CCC's prices were actually what I thought something like this should cost but WAY below what others were charging. I couldn't believe other places in the same local area were charging basically half of what a burial costs. I was fed up by being lied to by the police and coroners by that time so a price that seemed to good to be true, I was skeptical. Instead of doing the paperwork online I actually wanted to make sure it was done right and this place was actually real. Lewis greeted me and walked me through all the legal stuff as we had some hurdles to overcome.      I had things I wanted done a specific way and to much my surprise Lewis was a God send to me and not only got the things I wanted done under the circumstances of my brothers death, I needed to view my brothers skeletal remains. Lewis didn't fight me on it and after the signing of a waiver to examine remains in such a state, he basically held my hand emotionally through the whole thing giving me answers and closure in a way I never would've achieved without his help and understanding.    Everyone is different when they lose someone. Lewis is remarkably empathetic to the loss of anyones loved one. He knows the process is a horrible one to go through and at no time is he never not straight with you or treats the situation as anything but what it is. CCC's prices does make them no doubt a business you certainly want to check out, but Lewis puts the heart thats needed to make that place what a funeral "home" should really be. Everytime there was a new piece of information he shared it immediately with me, something I can't say about the police in this. He knew the things weighing heavy on my heart throughout the process and he did everything in his power to lighten that burden on me.    CCCs is lucky to have him, without him they would just be a bargin discount funeral home, but with him they beat out all the local competitors and hands down blows away establishments even like "the Cadillac of cemeteries" like Rose Hills pomp and circumstance that they put on just by being himself. You couldn't bribe someone like me to write something that surrounds such an intimate topic as the loss of my only brother, unless I truly thought my story could stop some suffering to others. Lewis will take some of the nightmare away. I hope because of what he does that no one ever has to meet him, but tragedy strikes everyone and when it does, I highly suggest you make him your first call. read more

Our family did not have a good experience with this company. In fact, we are still in process although it has been four months of interaction. The email I sent to them in September is copied below. I would not recommend this company as they seem very disorganized. I am sure they are not as insensitive as they seemed to be with our situation but at a time of great personal sadness and stress, they were not helpful. I have tried for some time to get copies of my brother's death certificate. I called several times and was placed on hold. I was also told someone would call me back but my calls were not returned for several days. On Saturday, September 16 I finally spoke with Eloisa who said she would mail death certificates to me. So far nothing has arrived. Yesterday, September 25, 2017, I had my attorney call. He was placed on hold for ten minutes and then told someone would call him. It is now 8pm on the 26th and no return call. I am asking you to please send death certificates. My brother's body came to you on August 23, 2017. We don't don't even know if he has been cremated. We have had so little communication with your company that we have no idea what is happening regarding his body or the status of his death certificate. I finally called the coroner's office, yet again, for their help. They advised me to contact the San Bernardino County Recorder's office and order copies there.
