One of my elderly and disabled clients recently paid Frank to come out and address an overflowing toilet in her basement. He charged her $2600 to run a snake and install a clean-out. Today, the toilet overflowed again and I called Frank and he will not come back without another charge. Other plumbers I have called quoted $800-1000 for the same work he charged her $2600 for. He did not have a camera on the snake he supposedly ran which should have been included, especially at that exorbitant price. I'm very disappointed that anyone would treat an elderly and disabled person this way. I'm seeking legal counsel on behalf of my client. read more

We had Juan come out using a coupon for a discount. We had a line blockage. He got the camera and the rooter out and told us there was nothing he could do but quote us many thousands of dollars to remove the sewer line. I know that this blockage could be removed as I work in the field of apartment maintenance. After digging around for 20 minutes, he offered us a bill saying it could not be cleared. I then gave him the coupon, in which he responded, The discount was already taken. I will never trust this person again. I got a REAL plumber to come out and clear the blockage. read more

We had our "remodel" 2 months ago and I'm just getting around to this review. Frank and his crew, especially Eduardo, did a great job. The "remodel" resulted from a cracked plastic shower pan from a previous plumber doing a poor job. When water started running and "squishing" underneath the pan through cracks, we knew we needed a new plumber. When the work began, we realized just how bad the original job had been done (about 5 years ago). Not only was the pan improperly installed, there was no waterproof wallboard behind the plastic shower insert (only plastic glued to the wooden beams)! Frank made suggestions on how to do the job correctly, including using tile in the shower, which we agreed to. Eduardo did a beautiful job - including on the matching tile floor in the rest of the bathroom. He worked cleanly (or cleaned up as he went, kept us informed the whole way, and listened to our requested for doing things a certain way (like where to place grab bars and the shower head). There was only one caveat that took away one star: there was an "assistant" who helped Eduardo and after the job was complete and were gone, we found grout, hardened and stuck to cement and bricks in the front yard (too late to do anything about because it had hardened) and a few other little things that weren't done very well (mostly cosmetic and easily remedied). Clean-up after the final grouting wasn't done very well, either. (Looked like it was done with a dirty rag or it needed to be rinsed a lot more than it was.) All in all, though, the installation and tile was beautiful (thanks to Eduardo) and one final adjustment that needed to be done got a quick response (from Frank) to give us hot, rather than lukewarm water, in the shower again. We love our bathroom now, feel we won't have any more problems with it, and appreciate the work done by California Rooting and Plumbing. We would hire them again in a heartbeat - but hopefully won't need them any time soon! ;-D read more

Called them, early morning, they said plumber will be there in 45 minutes, amazingly, he actually knocked the door in 45 minutes. Juan gave us few options, using snake or changing the drain pipe...cheaper or more expensive. Negotiated about the fee. Changed the drain pipe, very quickly He was out of here in 1.5 hour. I just moved into my new home in Hayward and have been here for a week. We really hadn't put too much of a load on the drainage system as we hadn't installed our new washer/dryer yet. A few nights ago we noticed a backup in the shower as a result of the toilet not flushing all the way. Well, today it came to a head. The washer was going through it's first cycle when the shower drains flooded again. So instead of just winging it, I decided to call in a professional. Juan was very eager to help, he showed up 30 minutes after my call and was able to find the problem...a broken drain back valve had lodged in the pipe essentially blocking the main line...not good. Luckily we didn't have to dig up my entire yard to get to the stuck door. He was able to replace the pipe, send a camera all the way to the street, and inspect the crawlspace for leaks within 2.5 hours. Once the work was completed, it literally looked like nothing happened. The price for the work done was very fair, and actually he negotiated the price with me as the required work increased. I will be working with Juan again in the future, and I do plan to recommend him to friends and family. read more

Beware of this company. Was given an estimate of $800 to fix a toilet leak and my contractor said it was a $15 part to fix it. Also, was given an estimate of $1200 to replace the pipes under my mobile home from the back hose bib to the front hose bib, putting in copper pipes. My contractor said that was an absolutely ridiculously high price so BEWARE. read more

They came out on Sat. even if it was 30 minutes later than promised. On the phone they said they would fix the problem immediately however, when they came on-site they said they can't fix it until Monday. They said it was not an easy job, but for a professional plumber, I don't buy it. This was an irrigation pipe leak that required less than a foot of piping to be replaced and I had already dug the trench for him. read more

I called them Friday morning and they were able to come in at 3pm that day to fix a backwash from the downstairs toilet and sink. This was at my tenant house so I was not onsite for the repair. They quoted me for $350. The plumber told me he used a pressurized hose and what else not. He had a heavy accent and it was hard to understand what he said. After about two hours he called and said the job was done. He asked me how i was going to pay. I said "Through credit card and I had bought a Groupon Voucher on the same day". He said "I could not use the Groupon Voucher since he already gave me a discount"... I let it go and just paid the $350 since I was not onsite and could not negotiate with his heavey accent. read more

Juan came today to run the snake in our clean out. We live in an older home in the Hayward Hills and the clean out is still under the house. Unlike the last plumber who came to our home, Juan was gracious and had no problem crawling in and out of there as he worked. He ran his camera through our pipes and I could see exactly what the problem was, roots! He was even able to identify exactly where the roots are by using another tool that detects the camera. He made some sound suggestions for a minor re-plumb that will eliminate future problems of this nature and provide a new clean out on the outside of our home to provide access in both directions. Bad bad experience. Used $69 coupon for drain cleaning service. Scheduled my service for noon the next day. The guys showed up two hours late. They filtered out my mainline to the sewer, took about15 minutes. Three hours later it was clogged again. When I called they said that's what you get for $69, no warranty. Called another local place with a $77 coupon, they were at my house on time, did the mainline again AND give a 30 day warranty. Go anywhere else. read more

I read Yelp's ( hopefully legit) "great " reviews after the work was done next day, but we had a horrible experience! Clearly the prior reviews would have not forwarned me to this bad experience. Had a pipe leak in front of house my handy husband could not fix so neighbor gave us Juan Rivas' cell #. He came and told us what a huge & difficult job it was going to be and quoted $625 verbally. Big hole in yard was already dug up, so he reduced it to $600 and he started. Saw the BBB stickers on his van but only found out later that he is NOT Better Business Bureau (BBB) approved despite his stickers proudly displayed on his van. Refused our credit card and wanted "Cash" or personal check only. Found out next day his website DOES accept credit cards but he wanted to apparently do the work "under the table" and avoid paying taxes on his income. Can you do that with your paycheck????? This "huge job" really took 2.5 hours which included going to the hardware store for a part he did not have on hand. I wrote check out to the company name on his van with BBB stickers on it thinking he is legit but then he REFUSED that check also & wanting "cash" or check made to "Juan Rivas" which I had to do. He tried to leave soon after he got the 2nd check made out to JR giving us little proof of payment to a company and did not provide us with any paperwork/invoice/ warranty for his 30 day (verbal) guarantee. (I was talking to neighbor and thought hubby got the paperwork & he thought I got it). Hubby noticed pipe still leaking insisted Juan put more of the liquid PVC sealer on pipe before he left. We were upset with this service so I did some checking on the internet next day to find out that 1) His website lists he ACCEPTS credit cards; 2) He is NOT BBB approved despite misrepresenting his work as being so. It is unclear how he got the stickers which is fishy to me; 3) refusing our personal check made out to the company name (therefore taxable if contractor is honest) and insisting on another check made out to him which could be for anything....selling crack or a puppy, etc???? Duuhhhh! and 4) having NO PROOF of work being done & certainly NO WRITTEN warranty! Any licensed contractor is required to provide paperwork on any work performed over $500 in CA. Juan told me he only did the work for us "as a favor since he has done work for our neighbor" (great attitude-NOT!!!!) STAY AWAY from California Rooter and Plumbing when dealing with Juan Rivas!!!!!. His partner Frank Hernandez, in San Leandro, had to do a lot of backpedaling to cover for Juan! Please make sure that if you call anyone under this company name Juan Rivas" is NOT your plumber!!!!!. He wants to rip you off as quickly as possible withOUT paying taxes & being honest . NO plumber is worth his prices! He is an "equal opportunity" exploitative scammer for both men and women regardless how cautious you may be! Be aware there is more than one California Rooter and Plumbing in California. They were both sincere in their workmanship as I observed and they took good thorough checkup on completion for leakages and I was quite satisfied. This was not an easy job but they were dedicated and determined to have it fixed by the end of the day. About 2 months ago I came home to find my bathroom flooded. The water had run outside of the bathroom and into my living room. I found Juan's number on line and called. I was concerned because it was well after 5pm on a Sunday evening, and all I could think about was the exploited cost that I couldn't afford. Juan made it to my place and quickly got to work on the problem. He explained how when my house was remodeled (before I purchased it) that the contractors didn't use the correct pipe size and that was why it had burst. He not only explained it but also showed me the difference in size making me feel at ease that I shouldn't have any problems with it in the future. He explained to me that there were some other areas that would need to be looked at as well and advised me to prepare for them in the future. Needless to say, I had to call on him again just the other day. My toilet, in the same bathroom, clogged and was leaking from behind. I immediately called Juan, and he was there. He explained to me what the issue was and again, quickly go to work. He also advised what we should do in the future to keep this from occurring again. Not only does Juan do excellent work.
