My work place orders catering from here often. I've only had Mediterranean from here and love it. I ordered for my daughter's first birthday and the owner was really kind, considerate and responsive. We got the beef, chicken, teriyaki chicken and salmon kabobs with hummus, roasted veggies and shirazi salad. It was a hit, all our guest asked me where I ordered from. The catering really took a lot of stress out of planning food for a party. Typically the package comes with fruits, desserts and salad which I opted out of. 10/10 would recommend, you will not be disappointed. read more

This owner is incredibly rude. I called to get a quote, asking if it's a good time to discuss the details. Sebastian was very condescending and said yes, it's a good time. And then he told me 45 seconds later that he needed to call me back because he was driving his son to a soccer game. And then he didn't call me back. I had to call him several more times before I got a return call. He had very strong opinions about the type of food we should serve, and that felt really weird. He gave two quotes (one for Italian, one for Mexican), and both quotes were exactly the same price - right down to the penny. We were glad when we found a different place to use. Originally gave them 3.5 Stars. (I'm still on the border of giving this place a 3 or 4) Came here with 5 of my coworkers. One of them is vegan and the only reason she came with us is because we saw the "Unlimited Salad & Soup Bar $8.95" on the menu on their website. Once we got there, we were notified that they no longer have the salad bar. (It's still listed on their hard copy menu too). They were accommodating and created a salad for her which was not on their menu and charged her $4.95 for it. I ordered the skewers again and it was the same as the last time I came here (not dry at all and had plenty of flavor). The waffle fries are also tasty. My mom booked this place to cater my bridal shower last Saturday. As an Elite Yelper, I have to be honest and say that I can't talk about how the negotiations for the food went down. I did, however, have a few e-mail exchanges with Sebastian by giving him info on the bridal shower (date, time, approximate count of people). From those exchanges, I can tell you that he was courteous, professional, and he responded very quickly. Come Saturday, 9/24/16, we were informed that the food would be delivered by 12:30pm. The food didn't come until about 1:00 or 1:30, which was fine because the party didn't start until 2pm and us being Filipino, it meant the party didn't really start until like 3:00 or 3:30pm. The delivery guy was fast and set everything up, without even breaking a sweat and it was about 100 degrees outside. He even told us to keep the plastic cover on until right before we're ready to serve the food. We had a Caesar salad, another salad that had kale and apples in it, meatballs, garlic bread, chicken penne with mushrooms, and a ravioli with red sauce. Again, I wasn't the one who decided on the menu so I can't exactly tell you what it was. All I can say was that it was very good. For it being pasta, the sauce wasn't very heavy, which was great. It wasn't over-salted and it had lots of flavor. I really liked the meatballs and the chicken mushroom penne pasta. I really enjoyed the food and would definitely get another event catered by them. There was so much food for 50 people that we had to give away the leftovers. The only downside is that we had to return the chafing dishes back to the caterer in Pasadena. The food was average and the decor was nice, but the health code violations were too much for me. My aunt and I decided to try this place for dinner. At 6PM on a Saturday, there are only 2 people at the bar and they're not even drinking. Should have turned around and left. There was only one waitress working and she was very friendly. I had the iced tea, which turned out to be watery-tasting tropical tea. The offer a few standard tap beers (Newcastle, etc. Nothing stout.). I noticed bottled beers but they're not visible from the dining room. Their draft beers were broken and were only pouring out foam, which I watched happen. I then got to hear the waitress loudly explain "Like, the draft beer, like, only comes out in, like, foam. And like, the manager, like, always tells the company to, like, fix it. But, like, he came and fixed it, and like, it, like, never changes." Seriously? All while running her fingers through her hair. Gag. California Skewers seems to suffer from Multiple Personality Disorder! The menu is all over the place and their "signature skewers" don't even take up 5% of the menu. They're literally buried beneath the burgers, wraps, sandwiches, pasta and pizza dishes. I went with the chicken burger ($7.95), which is basically a grilled chicken sandwich. It was covered with at least an inch of mayo on the top and another thick layer at the bottom. I scraped it off. The chicken itself was moist and tender, but lacked any real flavor. The fries were plentiful but average. My aunt got their 2 skewer meal, which is supposed to be $9.95. When I went back to look at the menu to write my review, I noticed that it says to add 50 cents for each beef skewer and $1 for each seafood skewer, in tiny letters, of course. The beef skewers came with tender beef and grilled carrots over rice pilaf and a "chopped salad". In most restaurants, that's a salad with a ton of stuff. At this restaurant, it's a bunch of romaine lettuce and herbal vinaigrette. Now, the reason I wouldn't return? The waitress didn't have her hair pulled back and she kept playing with it and running her hands through it, which she did just before bringing us our plates. She also scratched her ear and even pulled her shorts down out of her crotch without washing her hands after. She was also drinking and texting behind the counter, which is gross. And as a kicker, I noticed a "B" health rating as we were leaving. It's not visible if you enter from the front because it's in a back window. Awesome! Will not be back EVER. read more

I'm craving...delicious SKEWERS! I absolutely love this place! The food is fresh, tasty, and well presented. There are a lot of choices for skewers. I always get the California Chicken and the Mediterranean Beef, sometimes the Blackened Salmon. They also have some vegetarian choices. It comes with rice and pita bread, and the side I usually order is the mashed pototoes or the fries, but you can order healthy sides like fruit, salad, ratatouille, soba noodles. They will also put wasabi in your mashed potatoes if you ask them. The owner is really friendly and energetic and the service is great. The place is clean and hip. They have a flat screen and newspapers and magazines for you to read. This place seriously rocks and I try and get out there once a week. Came here with my mom and husband for dinner one night (when this place used to be open for dinner) because we had a coupon that we got in the mail. We all ordered the signature skewers special that comes with you choice of 2 skewers, rice and a salad ($9.95 each, prior to tax). I ordered the peanut chicken satay & the teriyaki chicken skewer (I didn't get a chance to try my mom's or my husband's skewers). I thought the peanut chicken satay was actually very good and juicy. The taste of the meat was flavorful and savory. The teriyaki chicken was just average, nothing really to write home about. The rice pilaf that came with my meal was quite a lot (half of the plate) and tasted nice and tender. The salad I had was nice and cold and the dressing on the side, like I had requested it. But wished that the salad was made with the healthy green leafys instead of the cheap iceberg and Romaine lettuce. I wished our food had more meal than the rice and salad though (but that's common with restaurants because protein cost the most money, thus they will only give you just a skimpy portion of it and fill up their patrons with the cheap stuff like rice and salad). Our wait for the food kind of seemed a bit longer than anticipated. But the manager (or maybe the owner?) of the restaurant was very nice and friendly. He refilled our drinks promptly and checked back with us often to make sure our food was okay. Overall, food was just about average. Service was friendly. Pricing seemed kind of pricey for the amount of food you are getting. I probably would not come back (especially now since they only are open for lunch time). Catered a company picnic at the Hollywood Bowl. The food was amazing. My favorite was a kale and apple raisin salad. So fresh, so flavorful. I also liked the corn salad and the bean salad. I ordered the One Way Combo with a Peanut Chicken Satay skewer, hummus, and carrot ginger soup. The chicken was more spicy than peanutty; the carrots on the skewer tasted better than the chicken. The carrot ginger soup was overwhelmingly flavored, mostly of chicken broth. The hummus was okay, but it didn't serve to make the so-called "pita" (in actuality, stale lavash) taste any better. After sitting down the waitress informed us that there is a old coupon and a new coupon, luckily we had the new coupon. Then she explained that it was CASH only when you use coupon, however without the coupon you can use a credit card. It makes absolutely no sense, with coupon you have to have cash, no coupon, then cash or credit card. What kinda of SCAM is this, they tried at every turn to prevent you from using a coupon. Healthy food that tastes divine? Count me in and save me a plate (or five) :D My company had a meeting today, and California Skewers (a primarily catering company) definitely delivered.... lol I mean they DELIVERED, in terms of food quality/overall experience. The manager/owner? Sebastien, was extremely accommodating, approachable, knowledgeable and passionate about the food. It was great talking with him while he explained each unique dish. Some highlights include: ~tender, juicy teriyaki chicken kabobs (*perfectly grilled chicken chunks interlaced w/ succulent pineapple chunks, seasoned well and pleasing texture) ~flavorful hummus (very creamy and seasoned perfectly; very filling) ~another grilled chicken kabob (you can't go wrong w/ kabobs @ this place) ~broccoli salad (just the right amount of sweet and savory) ~steak fajitas (juicy, bursting with flavor) ~spicy cucumber salad (a must-try) My mouth is drooling still thinking about it 3 hours later. B) I gave this place a shot and all I can say is, this place would be better off buying trader joes hummus in bulk and investing in some lemons to add to their bland food. I had the mediterranian mini kabobs. The chicken was ok. The beef was nasty. III) The waitress was attentive and on top of her game, but after she dropped off the check and went home, the other waiter took almost 15 minutes to pick up bill and return my change. WARNING TO ALL RESTAURANTS: if you take more time to pick up the bill than it took for the patron to eat, don't be surprised when they walk out without paying. The guy who works the counter is possibly the most consistent in bad service and maybe on par with extraordinary desserts in SD. I have come here a total of 3 times giving them the benefit of the doubt in terms of food and service. Every time I stand in front of him waiting to order, he tells me to hold on because he is having a personal conversation on the phone. I finally went in to this place after driving by it countless times. I am so glad that I stopped in. The food is really good and the price is right as well. They have aptly named themselves Skewers because their skewers are really tasty. The first time you go, I highly recommend you get the mini skewers. Each order comes with 4 different types of skewer based on a theme such as Asian or Mediterranean. Each skewer has two pieces of meat and a veggie. It is perfect for trying all the different types of skewers before committing to a meal. Since I was with my wife we each got an order of mini skewers and got to try 8 different types of skewers. It was amazing. They are full of flavor and the meat is nice and tender. If you live anywhere near this fine establishment, please stop in and treat yourself. California Skewers was one place I had never noticed till last week. was shopping with the girlfriend, got hungry and just happened to be right in front of this huge California license plate above the storefront. Casual dining spot for a quick meal. Hung out outside for a few minutes reading the menu when the friendly owner came out and started telling me about what they serve and how to order. They have a variety of skewers (meat, chicken, fish, and veg) and lots of sides to choose from. Things can be ordered as a combo (skewers and sides) or a la carte. All combos come with delicious rice. Walked in and ordered a 1 skewer and 2 sides plate- the tofu skewer and ratatouille and hummus. Tofu skewer was okay, being that I'm Chinese, I've had tofu made better, but it wasn't bad! Hummus was excellent, as was the ratatouille! I LOVED that there were copies of the LA times broken out into the sections available. I also LOVED that I could read the paper, AND have my tasty dinner outside on their dining patio. Beef gets a 2. Chicken, pita, and veggies were all a solid 3. Dislikes: big tough broccoli stems in the veggies, flavor of beef. Likes: chicken was tang and not completely dry, grape leaves had nice flavor. I was just a passerby courious about the menu when the cashier/waitress/busgirl pops out of no where are persuades me to order...saying "If you are not satisfied with your meal, it's on me". This place must be Duarte's best kept secret. The food is way more sophisticated and interesting and DELICIOUS than either their sign or their menu suggests. I ate there with my Aunt and Uncle and both my Parents -- so between us we had ages 30-85 including four picky eaters. I am a vegetarian, my mom finds fault in pretty much EVERYTHING and my Aunt & Uncle are very health conscious. My dad eats like a regular guy. The food here worked for all of us. We ordered a the hummus and pita appetizer. This is a generous serving of both pita and hummus (I hate it when they give you a big bowl of hummus and about 5 pita chips) presented on on a stylist platter. My iced tea was really delicious and refreshing. It is some kind of black tea blended with some tropical fruit flavor. Usually I wouldn't go for something like this but it didn't have any artificial taste to it -- it was just delicious. I think I had 5 refills. For the main course, yes, their menu is eclectic and they could do a better job of describing their dishes on their menu. I skipped over the tofu/carrot vegetarian pizza afraid that there would be large chunks of both and that it wouldn't be very good. My uncle ordered it however, and it came out looking gorgeous -- like some delicious treat that you'd find in a veggie restaurant where they care about making good vegetarian food. I ordered the kabob meal -- one kabob was tofu, the other vegetables. I wasn't sure how it would all turn out but it was DELICIOUS. The rice is cooked with chicken broth, so I just got the salad. My mom had the veggie kabobs with rice and fell in love with them. My Aunt had spaghetti which looked beautiful like it was in a fancy place and cost twice as much. I forget what my dad had. This place is pretty good. Its a small casual sit down place on Lake Ave. They have a bunch of fun combinations of skewers and side orders you can choose from. I like that they have a good amount of vegetarian options to choose from. A meal is usually 2 appetizers and 2 skewers. You would think it sounds a bit small, but I was full after it. We had a catered lunch at work today from Skewers. There was quite a selection that, oddly, didn't include any skewers. Instead we had lots of pasta dishes. Good old Americanized pastas. Unauthentic but edible and satisfying none the less. And hey, it was free! Cesar salad: the romaine was fresh but that was the only plus. The croutons were small dices of bread and technically difficult to eat. I'm a cheese snob so the Parmesan powder was not up to snuff. Garlic Bread: This was made on a pretty unsubstantial french roll but with fantastically pungent garlicky buttery goodness slathered all over. I'm not sure eating this in the middle of a work day is a good idea, but that's why (fill in with your deity of choice) invented Altoids! The pasta dishes were very mediocre. Chicken and mushroom rigatoni in alfredo sauce that wasn't too heavy. There was plenty of chicken and mushroom mixed in. The pasta with bolognese had a good ratio of beef to carb. Cheese ravioli: see above comment on Parmesan cheese. The parmesan chicken, however, was surprisingly good! There was a hint of lemonyness in the breading and the chicken was juicy. Sides Roasted veggies: a wee bit greasy but otherwise good. Mozzarella balls with olives, grape tomatoes and basil: there was an overwhelming amount of olives compared to the amount of mozzarella, making the dish a bit too salty. Dessert: Fresh fruit platter with berries, cantaloupe, grapes, pineapple, apples. I love places that serve fresh fruit. I know I can make it on my own, but I'm not going to buy 50lbs of fruit to make a salad with this much variety. It's the same reason I love good salads. Living in Pasadena is expensive period! lol you can either park outside in the streets or you can park in the back they have a little parking spot which you go in through the alley. When you walk in and see the menu it is confusing at first but the people are so nice there and explain to you how it works. I usually get the carpool which consists of two skewers and two sides and it comes with pita tortilla $10. I usually get the fire hot chicken and the chimichurri steak I love the steak its very juicy n delicious. The sides I get are rice and mashed potatoes. I like the food here. The tofu skewers are good enough to give me cravings, enough for me to drive out to Pasadena now that I no longer live there. Personally I think the prices are a little high ($8 for 2 skewers and some rice? Sorry, I know how much tofu costs and at this price I'm solely paying your rent) but hey it fills me up and it's pretty healthy. The biggest problem with this place...it's NEVER OPEN!!!! I first tried this place probably back in early 2008 when I was living in Pasadena. For the next year and a half or so I've tried to go there maybe 10-15 times and only been successful 4-5. And that doesn't even include the many times I've checked driving by to find them closed. The hours are totally inconsistent, sometimes they're open on Sunday nights, sometimes not. A Thursday afternoon? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Recently on more infrequent trips to the area I've literally held my breath driving by hoping it would be open, and still have yet to get lucky enough to get in in the year since I moved out of Pasadena. Honestly I don't think they even know their own hours since they're not posted anywhere! Bottom line, it doesn't matter how good the food is. I came here at 7:30 on a rainy Friday night with a small group of friends. They had a few customers, mostly families and one with a messy fussy child. As soon as we walked into the restaurant the waitress and some of the staff greeted us. There is a very modern bare feeling about this place. Maybe it's the high ceiling or the hanging lamps but I felt like I was at a gallery instead of restaurant. It reminds me of a cafeteria, all the tables were clustered together, which leaves little space between you and the other customers. We ordered the humus as an appetizer that was served with fried oily pita chips. I absolutely love humus, their humus lacked flavor. Their wraps, according to my friend, were delicious and humongous. The steak had a lot of fat on it and when it was served it came sans steak knife. The "Signature Skewers" come on a bed of rice with house salad. I think they should call it rice and not pilaf, its very plain rice. This isn't somewhere I'd rave about and I'm in no hurry to eat here again, but it wasn't bad at all. The service was great, the only complain we had was the missing steak knife. The manager brought out some cookies (grocery store package) to our table insisting he does this for "drinkers." YES they do serve beer, I don't think they have anything on tap since they asked if we wanted our beer in the bottle or served in a cup. Again, in no hurry to return but if I ever find myself in Duarte in hunger I would gladly stop by here and order their tofu signature skewer. read more

I have been a fan of California Skewers since it opened. It is awesome! Service is great and have gotten to know the owner and other staff. They have exceeded my expectations on several all levels. I had them cater a lunch for my employer at the last minutes - 350 people and they blew the socks of the staff! Additionally, they have prepared special meals for my hard to satisfy clients and again, I am so impressed! I will say they are by far the best family freely, professional catering organization I have found. Food is freshly prepared and very put together with the client in mind. I have asked for some pretty outrageous items and every time -they have delivered! If you are looking for catering for that special event, this is your place!
