We couldn't be happier with the work California Smartscape did on our landscaping project. Our home sits on a complicated, multilevel foundation and every other contractor declined the project due to its complexity.  Andrew and the Smartscape team embraced the challenge and delivered an outstanding design that incorporated all our needs.   The project included a full pool remodel (replacing crumbling 70s brick), new concrete, a safe and modern upper deck off the second story, a refreshed entryway, and a new outdoor living area to replace an unsightly and unusable wooden deck. Andrew's 3D model helped us visualize the final product and he worked with us to incorporate slight tweaks in the design based on our knowledge of the space.   Smartscape also phased the work so we could prioritize the pool and upper deck first. Leo, our project manager, was incredibly responsive and kept us involved in every decision. The finished pool is stunning with dazzling PebbleTec, modern coping and tiles, and our old jacuzzi was transformed into a luxurious jetted spa with smart lighting. The sleek, modern decking materials not only look amazing but give us peace of mind with everything up to code.   The biggest transformation was replacing the outer wooden deck with a retaining wall and turf, creating a large fenced-in play area for our kids--something we never had before. Now we have space to kick a ball and have outdoor family movie nights.   We started this project trepidatious, knowing that most contractors go over timelines and over-budget, but Smartscape completed everything in just a few months, with expert craftsmanship and within budget. UPDATE: 12/17/25 New Owner Jonathan reached out to me so I give him 5 stars for the timely response. He's going to send someone out to assess the situation and identify best way forward to address the problem. I know it's been a long time since the installation and ownership has changed, so I appreciate Jonathan trying to be helpful, even though I still have this very significant issue with huge potential costs to fix. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Initially, we were very happy with our remodel of patio and landscape. Over time, issues surfaced. We had water damage buckling up on our wood floor. After consulting several other contractors, we realized that the patio pavers were incorrectly installed too high, covering up the drainage holes of the patio sliders and windows by the patio bar, which Smartscape also installed. Now we have major damage inside the house on half of the wood flooring. Secondly, Smartscape installed a shade structure and over time, we saw issues of paint bubbling but could not figure out why. Finally, after consulting other contractors, we realize that material choice of tongue and groove panels were not the best choice; thin and subject to warp; install was uneven; and heaters too close to the ceiling, resulting in melted bubbles of paint. We rely on professional subject matter experts to provide the best recommendations... the onus should not be on the homeowner. We selected California Smartscape after some research. It all seemed good and legit. They seemed to know what they're doing: Richard Hafenstein, Sal Manna, Nick Hoffman. But only to find out too late, after any warranty period, that their work was less than acceptable and continues to erode and present more issues with time. They also recommended plant specimens - half of which I removed after several years, because they were simply poor choices for growth habit and space. How is a homeowner to know?... Isn't that why we hire professionals? We are so disappointed. But still hopeful that we will hear back and they will repair the paver install problem and stop the water leak into the house and foundation. I tried to contact Richard and have yet to hear back from the company. We spent over $172,291 on this project, not including equipment and component systems which we paid separately. We already spent $$$$$ to repair the shade structure paint bubbles. I just want the water drainage issue/paver install problem to be fixed and done right. read more

We use them for a backyard remodel with work completing in January 2020, so before the pandemic. I waited to review to see how the work holds up. Here are the issues we faced: 1. The work should have completed end of September of 2019. It ended 4 months late. And even then they didn't do the landscaping. I wouldn't let them because they couldn't/wouldn't find a convenient time to come discuss plants with me. I finally took that off and hired someone else to do the plants and irrigation because otherwise it would have taken another two months. They over-promise. 2. The initial delays were because they sent one person to the job-site every day. The work moved at a snails pace and the timeline they promised was off by four months as a result, six months if I had allowed them to do the plants. In hindsight, I would've negotiated the contract to include a clause that their final payment occurred only when the job was completely finished; I would have not agreed to the payment plan in the contract. They had most of our money and just took their time. 3. Another issue was the in-ground cantilever umbrella. They initially placed it in the ground, using concrete, in a position where the umbrella cannot be fully extended because it would've hit the Pergola. They had to move that umbrella three times just so it was positioned correctly. Amateur mistake. That wasted so much time. Why not just read the measurements of the extended umbrella and plot its position correctly the first time? 4. The refrigerator that they ordered for me didn't open in the direction I had requested, so it opens away from the grill. Also seems like an amateur mistake. 5. Probably the most dangerous error that they made was with the electrical work. I had an outdoor fan put into the California room. They installed a light switch on the inside of the house to control it. After about two months it completely stopped working. I called them with no response. I emailed them with no response. I called my own electrician to come out and investigate and discovered that it was not only put in incorrectly, it could have shorted and caused a fire in my home. Their guy tapped into another electrical line, so two rocker switches were on a line that could only support one. I had it corrected. The work was clearly done by someone unlicensed. I continued to call to inform them so it didn't happen to someone else. I finally reached a women who chuckled and said "sorry about that". Didn't offer any other response or reimbursement to fix the problem. 6. Jesse, who designed for us, was great until we wrote the first check. Then he stopped responding in any way. We wanted different lights than the ones they were using; took us weeks to get that resolved and 8 weeks waiting on the other ones to come in (if he had responded they could have been ordered so much sooner!) and then installation. This only happened because I drove to their office in person since phone calls, emails, and texts weren't responded to. 7. They had to repaint all of the stucco because they used the wrong color. I had literally given them the Sherwin Williams color (just had the exterior house painted the week before they started work) and they still got it wrong. The positives: The upsides are that the hardscapimg has held up well. The drainage is good. We like the position and f the up lights. The positives for us though did not outweigh the sloppiness on so many other fronts. We would have happily paid more just to have a more professional experience. read more

After a yearlong remodel our yard was a mess and our budget dwindling. We had landscaping quotes from companies that wouldn't even drive by the house or were higher than the addition. After waiting 2 weeks, i texted to ask about the quote and he said he was still working on it and should get it to me by end of the week. then it turned to beginning of the week. so now, after 3 weeks, he sends a text that the owner won't allow him to bid on the project? wtf? i already told him we were not in a rush for the project either. Under new ownership - Unfortunately Don't use them unless you plan to spend over $100,000 - That's their minimum they said. The old company did a great job on our backyard in 2018. So we wanted to use them again for the second phase that we had planned out with them at that time. I contacted them in June of this year, had the Designer out the beginning of July, and never heard back about our design after that. I've emailed back and forth for 2 weeks now trying to get a time estimate for when we will get the design and cost. Finally today I got an email saying they are only do projects over $100,000. But they couldn't have told us that back in June when they knew it was only going to be a Built in barbeque area? Now we wasted 2 months waiting for nothing, when we could have spent that time with another designer and getting our project going. Horrible! They got the 2 stars because under the old ownership our project was great (it cost us around $40k). But if you plan on spending $100k+ then I'm sure they will still do a good job. read more

This company has NEW OWNERSHIP as of 2021-2022. They are non-responsive, won't finish the jobs they started under the old ownership, and are an absolute headache to work with. We are still looking for final sign off on a job we had designed by cal smartscape almost 2 years ago! The job has been done for over 6 months(with tons of headaches during the process) but it doesn't mean anything if they don't give us a final approval from the city. No one will answer the phone or email at the office to tell us why our job is not complete. All the employees from our job are no longer with the company. Crystal at the desk is useless at providing any information that could resolve our issues when she does find time to send an email back. We could have hired contractors for half the cost if we wanted to go without proper permitting. We paid cal-smartscape the higher cost to have the job done right but they failed to deliver a completed job. Save yourself a ton of stress and frustration. We had California Smartscapes come out to build a short retaining wall, a wall to hid our pool equipment and plant some fruit trees. This was a great experience from the beginning to the end. Initial Contact: We reached out to several businesses for quotes many wouldn't even return our calls. Jonathan and Kevin came out two times to talk about the project. Both were kind and informative. A quote arrived within 48 hours and they followed up with a call afterwards to see if we had any questions. Project: The project was quoted at two weeks and it took two weeks. The workers cleaned up after themselves each day. Alex, our project manager stopped by several times throughout the project to make sure everything was going as planned. He also had really great design ideas! At the end of each week we got an email detailing the work that was completed during the week and what was expected for the upcoming week. Completion: Everything turned out exactly as we wanted, the process was smooth and we are very happy with the end result. I have already recommended them to others. We visited their design center to view the layout Jesse designed but when we asked him to tweak a few things, he took a deep breathe as if it was too much work for him. We met with other companies and they had no problem making adjustments. When we asked for an estimate, Jesse never provided that to us. I called the company many times and even texted Jesse asking if he was okay since we never heard from him. I called the office and asked if Jesse still works there and she said "yes". I said we never received an estimate but guessed it would be around $300,000.00 after everything we wanted and still no response. We wanted something very clean and simple, and also low maintenance for our newly built home. Andrew worked with us on the landscape design and from start to finish we felt that he really understood our aesthetic. Leo was our project manager through the construction phase. Everything ran super smoothly. The guys showed up promptly at 7:00 am every day and cleaned up as much as they could before they left. I sent an online inquiry, and they responded, set the appointment, and the consultant showed up. He asked my budget, and then proceeded to tell me they usually handle 100,000 dollar projects, but he "promised" he would get back to me with an estimate of what they could do on our budget. He used the word promise several times as he continued to tell me they really only do very large-scale and higher budget projects. Just tell me we aren't the right fit. I get it. We purchased a new construction home in Carmel Valley, and used CA Smartscape to landscape the front, back and side yards. It was our first time doing a landscape project this size, and CA Smartscape made it a great experience from start to finish. Nick took the time to walk the property, talk to us about our vision, then make multiple computer simulations of the project that allowed us to realistically visualize the end product. He also was super helpful in suggesting plants for specific purposes, and walking us through a nursery so we could see them all before they were planted. Sal, the project manager, and Tony, the daily on-site supervisor, were always available, and provided great explanations, suggestions and input during the 4 weeks required to landscape the project. They finished the project almost a full week quicker than anticipated as well. Multiple neighbors have asked us who we used, after admiring the final product. I give California Smartscape my highest recommendation; absolutely blown away how they were able to transform our little used back yard to a beautifully functional, stylish space. My wife and I had 5 contractors come out to give us estimates, including California Smartscape. My wife saw their website, and said to me "You have to come and see this!" Some of the stuff on their site was very impressive. Richard, the co-owner, and Andrew, the architect, came to our house, and we talked for about an hour. They listened to what we wanted, took notes, and asked a ton of questions. The other four contractors took measurements and very little talk went on about what we expected, which concerned us. A couple days later, Richard and Andrew came back, with Andrew showing us a 3D virtual reality tour of what our new yard would look like. We were blown away. Everything that we asked for was incorporated in the virtual tour. As for price, of the other four contractors, two contractors were lower, and the other two were about the same as California Smartscape. We were expecting the price to be a lot more, which was a pleasant surprise. When we finalized the deal, which was on Tuesday, Richard and Andrew said they would like to start work the following Monday, which was great. When work started, Chad (the concrete supervisor), Alex, and Paco started the work, with co-owner Jay and Andrew supervising. Again, during the process, Andrew and co-owner Jay asked us questions throughout the process to make sure there was no misunderstanding with what we wanted. Jay said to us "We just want you guys to be happy with our work", and I believe him. All of the people at California Smartscape, each and every one who were at our house, are incredibly friendly, pleasant, and patient. My wife was quite demanding with what she wanted and how it should look, and they were very courteous and professional throughout the process. My wife and I are absolutely thrilled with the results. Our yard actually looks about 30% larger. Even now, as I'm in my back yard, I keep thinking "Why does the yard look so large?" Without a shadow of doubt I will recommend California Smartscape to all of my neighbors and friends. You'll spend about the same amount of money for another contractor who will do what he wants. A few days later we met at their office to review his 3D animation of our reimagined backyard. He allowed us to break up the entire project into 3 phases to make it more affordable and showed us what each phase would look like. We did not have a good experience with California Smartscape. After the demo of our backyard, a large pile of trash was left at the end of the day. No one returned for five days. A gutter drainage ditch in the front of our house was dug and a pipe was laid. It was left uncovered for a week. The contract specified a portable potty but it was never delivered. The project was to be completed prior to our departure for an extended trip but that schedule was not met. Two weeks after project completion twelve Rev Flax Lily plants were dead. Smartscape said they would contact us about replacements but they never did. We relied on some favorable reviews of Smartscape and did not put the project up for bid. That was a big mistake. We should have spent two thousand dollars for plans from a landscape architect, which is what Smartscape charged us and put the plans out for bid. The end product was satisfactory except for the dead plants but they were very overpriced which we found out later. read more

The restricted watering limitations we have faced this past two years had allowed the weeds in the backyard to overtake the grass to the point where it was no longer smart to waste water. I called CalSmartscape, based on advertisement in one of those free home magazines that come in the mail and on viewing on line much of the work they have completed. The Yelp reviews also helped. I decided to go with California native plants around the edges of a large area of decomposed granite, with the idea to replace that with grass (if the water supply improved) or synthetic to match the putting green I had installed a number of years ago. I discussed my requirements with Nick and Richard. A plan was drawn up, which, with minor modifications, matched my initial concept. Happily, the price was well within my estimated budget. I was very pleased with the plants that were selected and the choices proposed for other materials needed to complete the project. After HOA approval, construction started and was completed on time. There were some issues with mating new sprinklers and drains to those that had been in place for the last 30 years. I can say that all was resolved. I happily recommend CalSmartScape to anyone considering a remodel or an initial installation. read more

ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. That's is how I would describe their customer service. From the get go they told us that they needed to make sure that they would want to work with us and that we would be a good fit for them. This kind of threw me off, as I thought I was the customer and thought that it should be the other way around - to see if THEY would be a good fit for US. The owner Richard was very friendly to us, but after we mentioned what our budget was (which was on the low side), his attitude completely changed. He seemed distant and now reluctant to work with us, since he didn't see big dollar signs. This did not make me feel important to him. We did end up making a meeting with his designer to discuss our ideas. This meeting went fine, but when we went to make the follow up appt for him to show us his proposal, he said he couldn't meet with us any time in the morning because he "wasn't a morning person" (even though that was a convenient time for us to meet with him). We mentioned we had time on that Friday during the early evening, about 5:00pm, and he said he wasn't sure if he could meet because he "might want to go out for drinks with his friends". We were kind of shocked because here we are trying to set up a time so they can have our business, and they are not being accommodating at all. We ended up having to make it several weeks out on a Wed. The next week we got a call from Richard who stated that they were not going to have a proposal for us because they didn't think they could show us anything amazing and that we weren't a good fit for them. We were BLOWN AWAY. I have never had someone say they did not want business! We tried to level with them and ask them if it was because our budget was so low, but they claimed it wasn't. They kept stating that they were scared that we weren't going to like their design and they didn't want us to "think it was dumb". We told them to stop thinking for us and that we understand that their proposal might be over our budget, but it was a place to start. We needed to see some material first before we started making changes or upping or lowering our budget. We ended up finally seeing a proposal, but it was a completely ridiculous and un-engaging process and I would highly recommend that you work with someone else. Find someone who makes you feel like an important customer and values your time. California Smartscape does not. read more

I believe California Smartscape has a very limited vision when it comes to design. I requested proposal on entire property. The areas we discussed were updated existing pool, a large grassy area which I wanted a covered patio and fire pit installed. I also asked for ideas on hill landscape and curb appeal. After meeting with them to go over proposal and having paid $500. for their "time" they came up with a narrow vision that included a covered concrete patio and fire pit. They did not include any other areas we had discussed. Furthermore, the materials they suggested did not even match existing materials. Very disappointing. read more

Our front and back yards are fabulous. The design was just right for our taste because Andrew listened to what we wanted and came up with a design that is amazing. Our front yard finally has curb appeal and our back yard flows and looks so coordinated. The curves, the plant choices, the accents all fit together to make the yards so well designed and thought out. The team that performed the work was meticulous to insure that everything fit, was done with care and quality. Very professional and easy to work with. The attention to detail and going back over the work to insure that if something was not quite right, it was corrected. The team insured that quality was a higher priority than rushing our job to get to the next job. And when they were done, they assured us that we can call them back for anything that might have been missed. The plants are growing and filling in .. and the flowers and colors are beautiful. We had an overgrown, unmanageable front yard that needed to be replaced. Also, we decided to replace our concrete sidewalk and driveway with pavers. Finally we also decided to spruce-up an old brick façade with stone. We got quotes from three different reputable, well-established landscape companies. All the quotes were in the same ballpark. We chose California Smartscape and we couldn't be more pleased. Andrew V. in the design department, was extremely helpful in taking our ideas and molding them into a well thought out design. He was able to use his experience in landscape design to formulate a professional design plan that addressed our needs. He was very patient and guided us through picking materials, colors, and plants. Once the work started, we were very impressed how quickly it progressed. The original estimate was for 2-3 weeks and they completed in about 2 1/2 weeks! Having other construction work done by other contractors, we were floored that California Smartscape completed on time and exactly for the amount the contract indicated. The quality of work was exceptional as well. We noticed that even small details that we probably wouldn't have noticed were pains-takingly fixed. Our driveway pavers and side walk look like something worthy of a country club or high-end multi-million dollar home. Every neighbor within a block radius has commented how much they like the work that was done. Some even said they will probably get a quote from California Smartscape. Overall we are quite impressed at the quality, level of professionalism and integrity that California Smartscape displayed. First, let me say.... our project was not easy. We had high expectations of what we were trying to accomplish. We went through two other high-end San Diego landscape designers, both of whom were awful, to say the least. Jay Gardner of California Smartscape came to our rescue, telling us, "We will create the yard of your dreams." Throughout the process, we were able to see the vision created by Jay and his wonderful designer Jesse in 3D, which allowed us to easily implement and immediately see any changes in the design to create the perfect backyard we had imagined. Our onsite contractors Sal and Bob managed the job to perfection. Their skillful staff were on the job site every day, worked diligently, and were always respectful of our property. The project was finished in a timely manner, as promised. After going through hell with two previous designers, we found heaven with California Smartscape. We now sit and enjoy our backyard with our friends and family every day. Isaiah was the only person I met with out of 5 Landscape Design firms that showed up on time, listened to our idea and most importantly worked within our budget. He did an amazing design job and coordinated every detail. We had no surprises and everything from start to finish went smoothly. He worked with Edgar and his team to make sure they had the materials they needed to do the actual work and every detail was perfect. After meeting with a few different companies, we chose California Smartscape for our complete backyard redo. The landscape architect did a great job incorporating our check list into the design and the construction crew's craftsmanship was top notch. We especially appreciated the way the crew cleaned up our driveway and street at the end of each day so that there was minimal impact on our neighbors during construction. We had pavers and poured concrete in our landscape design and both were very professionally finished. The landscape designer was also very accommodating with our plant wish list which we appreciated. The reason for 4 stars and not 5 was that communication during the process could have been better.
