2025-06-25 We are here for lunch today. Everything was cooked perfectly. Fries were cooked perfect. Onion Rings were thick and lightly golden just right. Chicken was perfect and the large chicken sandwich was huge. I suggest the small sandwich unless you are really really hungry. Service was very friendly.

Saying that a type of food is "the best" can be a very tricky thing. I mean, what's one person's 'best' could be another person's 'meh.' Or perhaps even 'ugh.' And nobody wants an 'ugh.' I think that one of the toughest foods to classify as "the best," is fried chicken. I mean you have the bird, the breading, the grease, the spices, all coming together in that perfect storm of chicken goodness. "This is THE BEST fried chicken I've ever eaten!!" Strong words indeed. And definitely worth checking out. So, when a good friend of ours declared one time that, "Callahan BBQ has THE BEST FRIED CHICKEN I've ever had!" well, that place was added to our bucket list. Several years ago. I mean, Callahan isn't exactly a hop, skip and a jump from Jax Beach. But yesterday? Yesterday my wife and I decided to make the journey. The trek to taste what at least one person had deemed to be the best fried chicken. We headed out to Callahan with empty stomachs and a full tank of gas. The drive was pretty, but it did take a while to get there. Callahan's BBQ is located in a little strip mall in Callahan. I'm not sure if there is even any more to Callahan besides that little strip mall. The place isn't huge. You order at the counter and then take a seat. I'm not sure if they, like other places, are light on help, but many of the tables hadn't been bussed and the trash hadn't been taken out. That kind of bummed us out but as we had driven all this way we were not going to be deterred. The selection is large and there is indeed bbq on the menu. However we were there for the chicken! We each ordered 2 piece dinner. Comes with 2 pieces of chicken (obviously) and 2 sides. When my wife asked for 2 thighs the nice young girl at the counter told us to hold on while she checked behind her to see what chicken was available. Now, this would have made sense if a) we were at the end of the day and no more chicken was being made, or b) she immediately filled our order at the counter. But neither were true. We were there at 2 in the afternoon and after we ordered we sat down to wait to be served. And watched more chicken being dumped into the baskets. Yeah, I didn't get it. But the food arrived after a not very long wait and we dug in. Thoughts? The sides were ok. I got the collard greens and the coleslaw. The greens were fine. I've had worse but I've definitely had better. The slaw was actually really good. Seemed very fresh and tangy. My wife had the green beans and the mashed potatoes and gravy. The beans came out of a can. Again, they were fine but nothing special. She was also convinced that the potatoes were instant. I really have no idea. To me they tasted like mashed potatoes. I know, you're all thinking, "But how was the chicken?" Good. The chicken was good. Was it the best fried chicken I've eaten? No. I don't think that it was. But it was good. To me it had a bit too much breading. And it could have used just a bit more spice. However, the chicken itself was tasty and moist and hot. Look, it was good fried chicken. And if we lived maybe 10 minutes away, we would probably go there more often. But we don't. So, I'm just not sure that we will go back. But I encourage you all to go and try it and form your own opinion. Is it the best fried chicken you will ever have? Only you will know for sure. And hopefully it's not an ugh.

Excellent food. First time here. Had rib sandwich which is 4 ribs on the bone with 2 pieces of bread. It is billed as a sandwich so of course you have put the bread aside. The ribs were good. The cole slaw and onion rings were excellent. Ready to go back and try other menu items.

Best fried chicken in the area. I always get a chicken sandwich to go after I eat my sandwich. Place gets busy for lunch and dinner so it's best to go before or after the rush. Mr. Danny is a great owner and knows what he is doing. read more

Can't talk more highly about a place than this. The owner is seen working hard, checking on guest. The place is run by high school kids which is good to see he looks out for them. The food is amazing! I have had the fried chicken sandwhich, and fried chicken. Make sure to get some of the homade buffalo sauce for them! Fried corn is amazing!!!!! read more

I work in the same shopping center as Callahan Barbecue, so it's a quick and easy stop for lunch when mine has been mysteriously left on the counter at home. The regular lunch/dinner food isn't really anything to write home about, but it's solidly home-cooked good. I like to get the pulled pork and mix it with the mustard sauce that's out on the table (the best sauce!), and I'll usually play it boring with fries and coleslaw on the side. However! Their chicken nuggets are AMAZING, right up there with Chick-fil-A's nuggets in my nugget-eating opinion. I also just last night had their catered mac and cheese for the first time, and now I'm trying to come up with excuses to have Callahan Barbecue cater all the things so that I can have it again some more. And even if you come and don't like the food, you can cheer yourself up by knowing that you're supporting the entire Callahan community with your order. The owners donate so much food and time and money to the schools and, full disclosure, the library I work at, that I'm not sure how this place turns a profit. Maybe it has something to do with the line that snakes out the door at every meal time... read more

The BBQ at what we call "The Chicken House" is real good. I usually get either the 1/2 BBQ chicken plat or a large rib plate (Center Cut). My wife likes the chicken nugget plate. Get there early because they GET REAL busy real quick. I also like their Chicken Gizzards but you have to ask for them to be fried soft. You order at the counter and they will bring it to your table. If they are real busy you may or may not find an open table. Drive thru is good as well but you can have 7-10 cars in front of you at times. read more

Was horrified by the conditions inside this place. Roach in the seat at the table. Food all over the floors. They were pouring from big containers to smaller containers and leaving them open on the table and counter. There is box of candy bars for 1 dollar. Asked what they are raising money for, was told it is so they can buy new uniform shirts for the employees. Understand that this is a family place in Callahan and everyone loves it. Maybe because they go through drive thru and never see the inside. read more

We were in Callahan for a few days for an Estate Sale - looking for local restaurants .. Many Locals recommend Callahan Barbecue .. We were not disappointed - everything was on point.. The Bar-B-Que & Fried Chicken were excellent .. Next time I'm in Callahan I will try the Fried Chicken Sandwich I hear it's one of their best sellers... read more

It's alright. Better when it was at the old location. Too big for its britches now when you get day old pork on the sandwiches. Chicken and gizzards still the best bet. Limited on places to eat and laziness keeps me a returning customer. Staff is always great though. Very respectfull even though they have a large volume of traffic and orders to get through, hats off!.. Warning: if the drive thru is at least 6-8 cars behind the order board expect an hour wait... read more

Perfect little place. We came from out of town to watch our son play football and didn't want typical fast food. We saw a sign in the window about supporting the students and decided to try it out. It was great! My burger reminded me of one my Great Aunt used to make before she passed away. Everyone was super friendly and service was quick. I would go back. Ordered a pulled chicken sandwich came home no sauce in the bag or the sandwich. I had to use ketchup to moisten the meat. Been there twice and they are very stingy with the condiments. Didn't like their customer service. Food is nothing out of this world; I've had way better barbeque! Not going back! read more

This is one of my favorite places to go for simply great comfort food. It might have barbecue in the name but it will always be the Chicken House to me. The best deal by far is the small nugget plate. It comes with a generous portion of homemade chicken nuggets and two sides. Throw in a large sweet tea and it is only $7. I usually get onion rings and French fries with a side of gravy to dip them in. If you are in the area stop by and say hello to Danny and the gang. You will be sure to leave fat and happy. read more

Once every couple of months we make the drive to Callahan BBQ because it's usually worth it. Been several times and was always happy. Chicken nuggets, cheeseburgers, livers and gizzards.... However yesterday was a not so great experience. Everything tasted like it was cooked in old grease and burnt. I'll still go but I'll inspect my food before I leave from now on. read more

We coincidently live right down the road (possibly was a MAJOR selling feature of my house...) and go at least twice a week. Their nuggets are HEAVEN. They catered my wedding in 2016 and were nothing short of amazing. Great service every time I go in and even better food. Sooooo good! The first time I went here I got the small chicken nugget meal with two sides and a drink. My total was less than $7 and I got so much food! If you come here with more than one person and you see an open table, snag it quick! Any time I've come it's been really busy (which is always a good sign). The pulled pork is really tender and their green beans are awesome! If I lived closer to Callahan I would probably come more than once a week! read more

Loved the pulled pork and the sauces, but the sides tasted like they were either canned or sitting in a steam table for an inordinate amount of time. And as a lover of our beautiful planet, PLEASE get rid of the plastic and the styrofoam! There are many great, economical options that are biodegradable. read more

Smoked pork, ribs, fried fish, yeast rolls, sliced roast beef, ham, turkey slices, meatloaf, fried chicken, baked chicken, green bean casserole, mac & cheese, cornbread dressing, turkey gravy, mashed potatoes, lima beans, black eyed peas, creamed corn, greens, rice, fried okra... Pumpkin pie, pecan pie, lemon meringue, peach cobbler, soft serve ice cream, chocolate cream pie, cookies, brownies...oh, I'm exhausted just from trying to list everything! There was so so so much more than what I even listed here, plus the absolute best waitress and Arnold Palmer maker! Why cook at home, burden yourself, spend HOURS cleaning up afterwards and hours more packing everything away? Take yourself and your loved ones out to Ole Times Country Buffet just one time for the holidays and you'll never go back to cooking again! (I sure haven't)

But unlike last time the dude at the bar charges me for the freaking bread, WTF. Last time I was there they didn't charge for the bread so I had to redo my score to a 3 just so it hurts you a little bit. Look man I don't make a lot of money I'm not on vacation 15 bucks for lunch is a lot for me, and you charged me for the fricking bread. Oh yeah and on your website says the soup is $10.95 and you charged me $11.95 and $1 for the bread that's why you got a lousy 15% tip. I would've tipped you 30% I get it, if I would ask for extra bread you could charge but what if I didn't even like that pumpkin bread man if you're gonna charge for the bread then say hey what would you like in your basket since I'm gonna charge you. Well I won't be coming back again either forget the shrimp and grits I'm over it. G

Let me start by saying our server was sweet and wonderful. That was the only good thing about this place. The oysters were fried in a batter with no seasoning whatsoever. They tasted like straight up ocean. The squash was so greasy the oil literally poured out into the plate. Then for the lunches. The turkey was literally LUNCH MEAT warmed on the grill. And cheap lunch meat at that. The sides were flavorless. I figured a bbq place in a little town would offer some real bbq. If th owner sees this, please step it up. It was truly horrible.

The pork chop looked good, but it didn't seem seasoned, and there wasn't enough gravy on it to really be considered smothered. My husband's soda also had a strange aftertaste, which wasn't pleasant. On a positive note, the sides were absolutely delicious. The sweet potatoes, butter beans, rice, and cornbread were all flavorful and enjoyable. That's honestly what saved the meal for me. I know every restaurant can have an off day, and because we've had great experiences here in the past, we'll definitely give them another chance. This visit just wasn't up to the standard we've come to expect from Sweet Mama's.

Most people order for pick up here but there are some tables if you prefer to eat in. The staff isn't super friendly, but they are super efficient. This is one of the better places to eat in town.

Who doesn't love this restaurant??? Chicken house is the best. They are quick, efficient, hard working, and always helpful. They are always super packed so just remember the line might be long but they will get you in and out quickly. The chicken nuggets!!!! OMG! The best!! If you haven't tried them you are missing out on a southern luxury. We love supporting local businesses and this is a fantastic mom and pop restaurant. They have picnic benches and diner like seating inside. It is clean, the atmosphere is upbeat and positive, and overall a great experience. We have had them cater events for us as well and it is always top notch service with a smile. read more

Mr. Danny is one of the most generous and humble individuals that I have had the pleasure of meeting. Not only is the food at Callahan Barbecue delicious but Mr. Danny gives back to the community as well. For the past twelve years he has donated food for 150+ people (including beverages, condiments, utensils) for the NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) of Nassau County, Fl. fundraiser dinner. Won't find a better place in or around Callahan!!haven't been in as much since my husband passed BUT...my grandkids are turned into regulars..I got chicken nuggets last night and loved every bite! I live near here and go here all the time. It's a great place to eat with your family because the workers are so friendly. And when I say they have the best chicken nuggets on earth, I really mean it. I recommend you to go here if you're ever in town. read more

I have never been to the actual restaurant, but they catered a party at work for me. I was not very impressed with the pulled pork. It was very dry and did not have much flavor. In the future, I will go to sonneys. read more
