I'm a few reviews behind on this place as I have eaten here quite often since the last review. As always the onion rings are always a go to favorite. Today I got a single burger with tomato and pickle and a side of fries and drink. $11 which I think is great for fresh cooked food. I mean the fast food place is going to be more than that price. Sometimes there is a little wait time because they are cooking your food, have some patience and wait for the goodness. Come for the picnic tables and paper towels on the tables. The food was absolutely jaw dropping fantastic! I appreciated the sizing for the sandwiches and meat platters. The fried okra, Mac n cheese, corn, and pork sandwich were amazing and I will dream about these. The prices were super reasonable too!! When I go in to spend money and feed my family, you can sell me the items on the menu I've selected instead of being told that they aren't making anymore chicken until "later tonight". We drive through the area on road trips often so I really wanted to love this place. However, the inside smelled of old oil so strongly that we ended up getting take out, thankfully there is drive thru so that was a huge plus. Service was very kind and food was fine. Stopped while traveling on a busy Saturday afternoon. The place was packed with locals, always a good sign. Although the line to order was to the door when we arrived, it moved quickly and our food was ready soon after ordering. Chicken nuggets! These are crunchy and delicious little gobs of fresh fried nuggies. Hand breaded and cooked to order, these babies are worth the wait. I share this meal with another adult (we add on an extra side)! Surprisingly filling! Comes with two sides of your choice (try the fried corn!) and a slice of buttered white bread called "barbecue bread". Not toasted. Mashed potatoes don't seem like fresh potatoes, but rather from a mix. Brown gravy is hot and gives the potatoes much needed salt. Coleslaw can be tasty or too much mayo depending on the day. Always crisp cabbage, never too mushy. Fries are crinkle cut ballpark style, which I personally like, but are not house made. However, the tea is house made and highly addictive. Personally prefer it half cut with unsweetened tea, which is just right for me. Chicken sandwich is HUGE. Grown man does not finish it. This place is almost always packed! The drive thru is almost always churning! Be prepared to wait, but it's not in vain. Tables are either booths or a picnic table and they all fill up fast! read more

2025-06-25 We are here for lunch today. Everything was cooked perfectly. Fries were cooked perfect. Onion Rings were thick and lightly golden just right. Chicken was perfect and the large chicken sandwich was huge. I suggest the small sandwich unless you are really really hungry. Service was very friendly. read more

I love to support local small businesses and Mr. Danny, the owner, has been a staple in the community supporting the local schools and providing local jobs. There is always a line, but, in my opinion, the food quality has decreased over the past 5-6 years. I got a small nugget dinner with mashed potatoes and gravy and green beans. read more

A plain, local barbeque restaurant with lacquered wooden picknick table seating and concrete floors that is ALWAYS busy with locals. Ask any Callahanian have they tried Callahan BBQ. First, they will give you a blank look and say "Huh???" and after a sec they'll say, "Oh, you mean The Chicken House!". Yep, their FRIED chicken is that good. The fried gizzards are about redneck great as any I've ever tried. They were so crispy and hot that they burned the styrofoam serving plate. The sides are all solid and well executed. IE: collard greens fried okra, huge crispy onion rings, mac n' cheese, cole slaw and fried corn. The large meaty pork ribs ,smoked chicken and chopped pork are all delicious and wonderfully smokey. This had to be the worst ribs I have eaten ever in my life and I have eaten ribs all over the USA! They were completely overdone that I had a hard time biting and chewing what I could get off! Not only were my ribs over done but also was my okra and it was cold. My husband had chicken and it was over cooked as well. Saying that a type of food is "the best" can be a very tricky thing. I mean, what's one person's 'best' could be another person's 'meh.' Or perhaps even 'ugh.' And nobody wants an 'ugh.' I think that one of the toughest foods to classify as "the best," is fried chicken. I mean you have the bird, the breading, the grease, the spices, all coming together in that perfect storm of chicken goodness. "This is THE BEST fried chicken I've ever eaten!!" Strong words indeed. And definitely worth checking out. So, when a good friend of ours declared one time that, "Callahan BBQ has THE BEST FRIED CHICKEN I've ever had!" well, that place was added to our bucket list. Several years ago. I mean, Callahan isn't exactly a hop, skip and a jump from Jax Beach. But yesterday? Yesterday my wife and I decided to make the journey. The trek to taste what at least one person had deemed to be the best fried chicken. We headed out to Callahan with empty stomachs and a full tank of gas. The drive was pretty, but it did take a while to get there. Callahan's BBQ is located in a little strip mall in Callahan. I'm not sure if there is even any more to Callahan besides that little strip mall. The place isn't huge. You order at the counter and then take a seat. I'm not sure if they, like other places, are light on help, but many of the tables hadn't been bussed and the trash hadn't been taken out. That kind of bummed us out but as we had driven all this way we were not going to be deterred. The selection is large and there is indeed bbq on the menu. However we were there for the chicken! We each ordered 2 piece dinner. Comes with 2 pieces of chicken (obviously) and 2 sides. When my wife asked for 2 thighs the nice young girl at the counter told us to hold on while she checked behind her to see what chicken was available. Now, this would have made sense if a) we were at the end of the day and no more chicken was being made, or b) she immediately filled our order at the counter. But neither were true. We were there at 2 in the afternoon and after we ordered we sat down to wait to be served. And watched more chicken being dumped into the baskets. Yeah, I didn't get it. But the food arrived after a not very long wait and we dug in. Thoughts? The sides were ok. I got the collard greens and the coleslaw. The greens were fine. I've had worse but I've definitely had better. The slaw was actually really good. Seemed very fresh and tangy. My wife had the green beans and the mashed potatoes and gravy. The beans came out of a can. Again, they were fine but nothing special. She was also convinced that the potatoes were instant. I really have no idea. To me they tasted like mashed potatoes. I know, you're all thinking, "But how was the chicken?" Good. The chicken was good. Was it the best fried chicken I've eaten? No. I don't think that it was. But it was good. To me it had a bit too much breading. And it could have used just a bit more spice. However, the chicken itself was tasty and moist and hot. Look, it was good fried chicken. And if we lived maybe 10 minutes away, we would probably go there more often. But we don't. So, I'm just not sure that we will go back. But I encourage you all to go and try it and form your own opinion. Is it the best fried chicken you will ever have? Only you will know for sure. And hopefully it's not an ugh. read more

This is a hot spot in Callahan. I've been here before, but I guess I forgot to write a review. Everything you get here is good. I ordered the combo plate for two. Then I Also ordered two thighs for to-go. We did dine in. We got the last table available. The line never stops here. It's located in a small strip mall. I was a little disappointed with the temperature of the ribs, but they were tasty. The cole slaw was very good. The onion rings were okay. We liked the Texas toast. (Sometimes people call them Callahan Chicken ) Whenever I'm in the area I always make sure to stop by if I can. I heard the burgers were good too but I haven't tried them yet. I love the chicken so it has been my go to meal. I got the large chicken nugget dinner today. It comes with 2 sides. The small is 6 oz of chicken and the large is 8oz of chicken. The small is plenty of food but if you want some leftovers the the large may be for you. (Depending on how much you eat. I'm kind of a big eater.) I got the green beans with fries. The Green beans are soo good !! You will have to try them. They have some bacon in them for flavor so I'm sorry if you're vegan or vegetarian. They are bursting with flavor and soo good. The crinkle fries that are nice and crispy. Crinkle fries are only bad if they're soggy and they have never been soggy from Callahan bbq. The chicken nuggets are delish. Nice and crips with not too much batter. They aren't overly salty either. I love these nuggets more than I like the chick fil a nuggets. You should try to come here if you haven't. I should have read the reviews more closely. This is a fried chicken establishment more than bbq and I can't eat chicken. The chicken and onion rings look really good, and after realizing that is what everyone was ordering I should have known better. The beef sandwich was bland, nice portions and great prices, but no flavor. The pulled pork was better and ample. The ribs were tough and nothing I would order again, the greens were not good. The best bite was the baked beans. They were flavorful and had a little kick. Overall a chicken restaurant and not a bbq in my opinion. read more

This is my family's favorite BBQ place in NE FL. This place is always packed around lunch and dinner time, so plan accordingly. Went through the drive through today and ordered a 9 piece fried chicken family pack. The girl told me the had no legs. I told her that was fine. When we got home we found that all we had were wings and very small thighs. While the chicken is good, this time was so disappointing. However, they will stay completely slammed from 4:00-8:00 & I know this isn't their fault but it seems most days from ordering at the window to getting your food usually takes about 40 plus minutes.
