If you're looking for great southern food with a family oriented atmosphere then you gotta try this place! I walked in and immediately felt like I was at a family gathering. There are large picnic tables, a wide variety of options on the menu and lots of friendly customers and staff ready to throw up a hand and say hello. The food had amazing flavor and the portion sizes were generous. The chicken nuggets were probably the best I have ever had and paired with their spicy BBQ sauce? Yum! The baked beans deserve an honorable mention. They were smokey and sweet and definitely left me craving more when I got to the bottom of the cup. HOW is it possible that I've had 8 "check-ins" here (in reality it should be more) and not done an actual review? I dunno, maybe it's because of the sweet tea.... While we're on it, let's start with the tea....it's sweet! For some people it may be too much so, almost a syrup, but I like it and it's not like I'm here every day drinking the stuff. About the only thing I ever order here is the chicken sandwich (deep fried, white meat, crunchy goodness), fries and a drink. The small sandwich is plenty, get the large if you're REALLY hungry. My wife and my daughter also enjoy the nuggets with mashed potatoes and green beans. I will say that I'm withholding the fifth Yelp star rating due to the previously mentioned, customer service. Don't get me wrong, they take your order, bring your meal, refill your drink and aren't like rude about it, but not overly friendly about it either. Don't expect them to come check on you at your table. I know it can get busy at meal times and a lot of orders are flying around, but when it's slow the "attitude" if you will, stays the same. read more

Everything was delicious! My coworkers and I enjoyed our lunch yesterday. I ordered chicken wings and mashed potatoes with gravy and it comes with a slice of bread. It tasted like how your mom or grandma's chicken would taste. It had a very good down home flavor to it. They have several flavored barbecue sauces to choose from. I chose mustard sauce and it took my food up another level. My coworkers used regular barbecue sauce and they said theirs was good too. So I was turned onto this place because they catered a party I had attended a while back. Everything was delicious, the stand outs were the sides, mashed potatoes, greens, Mac and cheese and there famous "chicken nuggets" yes, chicken nuggets. These are not McDonald's, these are delicious bites of white meat chicken with an excellent flavor and crust. Really simple, really good. We decided to go to dinner there at the restaurant at some point based on the catering experience. Well, let's just ay- a little bit of a let down. The order process was at a counter. No paper menu to look at. So you have to move quick or you hold up the line. The woman behind the counter was anything but friendly. Very short, really lacking patience or hospitality. We rushed to order. We then picked a table. It's really country. Like REALLY country. No decor, plastic or wooden bench/booths. Sauces and a roll of paper towels. Dinner is served on styrofoam plates wIth plastic forks and knives. Now I'm not "high folutin" and I am fully aware that some awesome food can come from places like this so my expectations weren't affected by the dinnerware or decor. For $6.99 I ordered a large chicken nugget dinner, it came with 2 sides. But, I'm my haste to order, I ordered mashed potatoes and French fries. :/ yeah. So the mashed wasn't the same as the catering. These were straight instant with a lake of food service brown gravy. The Mac and cheese isn't available at the restaurant, and the fries were food service crinkle cut. The chicken portion seemed smallish. But the flavor of those nuggets was still excellent. Would I return? Definitely not. Would I recommend? Definitely for the catering or perhaps nuggets and fries "to go" so there you go. Callahan could sure use a good full service restaurant. Anytime you get near this local's favorite you must stop in. The nugget meal is heavenly. The chicken fillet sandwich is tremendous. Tonite the cashier let me know the corn dogs and cheeseburgers are a regular's secret. Very affordable, fresh made, and fully staffed. It looks like the lines won't end but there's lots of takeout orders in there ; the friendly clientele don't dawdle and we have never not gotten a table. It's good. I wasn't disappointed. But by the way locals talk about it, you would think it's something you can't live without. There are very few restaurants in Callahan, and very few exceptional restaurants in Jacksonville. Everything is a strip mall or a fast food chain. At least this is not. It's good to spend local money. But it's BBQ and it's good. I wouldn't rave about it. I'm glad it's here.
