This Bakery is great if you don't order anything. My friend who is seven months preggers came in to order her baby shower cake. We showed a picture of what she wanted and was told they could not do that. Fondant cowboy boots and a cowboy hat. We showed another picture of a bandana and was told again they could not draw that. Two more pictures and two more denials. We settled on a slight variation of the bandana motif around the edge. We went in to take some additional props to be added and was told by the manager they could definitely do what we wanted originally. That they have drawn harder scenes than the one we wanted. Then the day of the party came and we went to pick up the cake. IT WAS UGLY. The bandana motif was haphazardly drawn all over the top of the cake. It looked like someone was just learning cake decorating and practiced on our cake. The color scheme was wrong there was no blue for a baby boy as we requested, it was black. When she looked like she was about to cry I asked what could be done the asher brought out the decorators and they suggested coloring over the black with blue. That may it look somewhat better but for the $130 we were paying it wasn't right. They said that it would take an hour to re-ice the cake and because we had to get to church (it was Sunday after all) we didn't have time to wait. We got a discount of $80 because the cashier could tell my friend was still very unhappy. When I got home I called back and spoke with the owner. He had me bring in the cake and re-iced it and delivered it to our venue in the city. That was helpful but we didn't get what we really wanted. That was very disappointing. The hassle was not worth the effort. The cake was good but we will never be back. read more

Went on 2 separate occasions. 1-Bought an atomic cake for my brother's birthday and it was so lop-sided they had to add a ton more whipped creme to correct for the uneven layers. It was ridiculous. Cake was dry and layers had very little flavor. 2nd visit picked up a variety of cookies and donuts. Yuck! Several of the cookies had an awful stale taste. We ended up throwing them away they tasted so bad. The donuts were fair at best and they had very little variety to choose from. read more

I'm extremely disappointed with the actions of this establishment. Bad experience while traveling. I originally heard great things about this bakery and decided to give it a try. I'm a special event planner specializing in weddings and I'm always on the lookout for bakery's that can execute. My experience with this establishment fell short this time. I was with my family and paid with my credit card. The cashier took my credit card and left the counter area with it to find a pen. The service was somewhat chaotic on this day. My family proceeded to take the pastries to the lounge area. Upon the cashiers return I signed for the transaction and joined my family. After leaving the bakery I noticed that the cashier did not return my credit card. I returned back to the store and spoke with the cashier. She told me that she had given it back to me. I assured her that she did not. The back of my card clearly states ask for ID in the signature portion which is something that the cashier did not do as well. The young cashier's attitude towards the situation was less than expected. If you have ever lost a credit card you will understand the urgency to a situation like this, especially while traveling. The "Oh Well!" attitude from the cashier led me to ask to speak to a manger. I spoke with the owner who had stated that he was "Kind of busy" and would be happy to review the video tape to see if he could see anything. I had stated that I was visiting and needed my credit card. He took my name and number and said that he would get back with me. Not having a card while traveling was a huge inconvenience due to the incompetency of this establishment. Needless to say it is almost a week later and I have not heard back from the bakery with and explanation to the situation. The customer service and follow through is lacking. I can only imagine what would happen if this establishment was handling a situation on a bride and grooms special day. read more

We ordered a birthday cake for my mother-in-laws 94th birthday. The cake was ordered with whipped cream topping but was made with butter cream. When it was cut and served the comments were It s awfully sweet for whipped cream . We called the next morning and explained the problem. They asked us to bring it back and they would refund our money based upon how much of the cake we returned. They did refund half the cost of the cake but without ANY APOLOGY or concern. My fiancée, mother, and I just finished with our first wedding cake tasting and I have nothing but praises for this business. Not only did we receive complimentary drinks with the appointment but we were also encouraged to take our left over cake home (and believe me there will be leftovers). On top of that the woman we met with was friendly, polite, and knowledgeable in every facet regarding the cake. The price was more than fair and more importantly it tasted delicious. First let me say that I have been coming here for years and so has my family. The bake goods are great tasting! There are a variety of goods to choose from so there is a line most of the time. I arrived on a Sunday to pick up a cake for my niece 1st birthday party, the cake was ordered week before and was paid for in advance. The teenager that helped me brought out the cake so I could view what it looked like, immediately I saw that my nieces name was spelled wrong on the front. So I told her it was not correctly spelled (common name). So she took it back and came with a huge box. I ask to see it and the inpatient teenager got a major attitude!! Upon review I did not like the Mess they made so I called my nieces mom and sent photo of the cake. She is the one who placed the ordered. She did not like either! While on the phone the teenager got more upset and kept telling me what I am going to do??? WHAT do I want to do??? In a very rude manner! I Ask to see the manager, which took 5 minutes, he comes out telling me that he will not tolerate me cussing out his worker! Not once did I swore at her and told him she is not telling the truth. He apologized and said for my niece mom to call back next day for refund. I was absolutely embarrassed and a very unhappy customer. I was so embarrassed in front of the other customers, I left there with a cake that wasn't designed correctly and embarrassed from the bad service. I guess I will be the dissenting opinion in a bunch of happy people. Sorry to be a buzzkill, but Calumet Bakery's quality that I've experienced is not so hot. Perhaps it's the type of items we order, or the time of day, or something in the planets...but somehow our stuff is not nearly as wonderful as all of the other reviews I've read. We've had several cakes and tortes from them that were just plain inedible. Happy Birthday, let's try and get a cake from them because it's closeby and we'll give them another chance, but then the guests don't even finish one piece of cake and the rest goes in the garbage. The brownies I've had from them are dry and without frosting would be horrible. I don't think their smiley cookies are anything to write home about either. And it's not as if they are terribly cheap. A lot of their bakery items are pretty expensive. In my experiences with them it's hit or miss, and in my experience with Calumet Bakery, it's mostly miss. read more

Over the years my family and I have given Calumet Bakery a lot of business. There have been issues in the past that I've overlooked. For example, I ordered custom cookies for my son's birthday in October, and when I arrived to pick them up, (an hour after my pick up time), they still weren't ready. Someone dropped the ball, so they scrambled in the back to frost the cookies. To further exacerbate my aggravation, I was informed that they were unable to package the cookies as stated, per the order, because the frosting still had to dry. Ultimately, the manager was apologetic, they provided me with the supplies to package them at home & she offered a discount. Although I wasn't entirely pleased with the debacle, I appreciated her efforts to reconcile the situation & was satisfied. However, my encounter today took the cake (no pun). The young woman assisting me in ordering carry-out baked goods was extremely disrespectful & blatantly rude. She had the nerve to literally roll her eyes to my face as if I was inconveniencing her. After tolerating her poor attitude for a couple minutes, I did address her ignorance. She replied with the most disingenuous, "I'm sorry." After multiple negative experiences, I've decided that I'll spend my money at a bakery that leaves a sweeter taste in my mouth. read more

The cakes were medicore, the service was terrible. I ordered two cakes from Calumet Bakery. Both cakes were completly wrong with the designs. I had emailed the lady with exact pictures and instructions for each cake and had a reply from that exact email "Got the pictures. Your cakes will be ready Sunday." I asked for a blue water themed cake and instead received a pink and purple flower cake. When I went to pick up the cakes, I showed the lady my exact emails that were exchanged. She did offer to redo the cakes however I did not plan enough time for two entire cakes to be redone. Overall, I felt they did not care the cakes were wrong and I had to take two wrong designed cakes to my party. I still paid full price for the cakes that were wrong. If I wasn't in such a time crunch I would have left them there and not paid for them. I was excited to get these cakes to only be dissappointed. The owner Ms. Sarah Moore insulted my character and disrespected me in a manner that I have never experienced before. Five parents including myself ordered five individual cakes for our daughter's combined graduation party this past weekend. The cakes were beautifully decorated for the occasion. But upon cutting them they were tasteless and dry. I called Calumet Bakery in Lansing, IL to speak with a manager a couple days after trying the cake because I couldn't bring myself to throw away a whole cake. I was told that a manager would call me back. I never received the call back so I called again yesterday. I spoke with a very pleasant manager who invited me to bring the cake in and she would see what she could do. The manager tasted the cake and disagreed with my opinion. Regardless of her opinion and mine not agreeing she appeared to value my opinion as a customer and asked if I could wait while she went to the back. Out came Ms. Sarah Moore the owner who made a statement that floored me and the other two mothers who came to return theirs cakes for the same reason. Ms Sarah Moore pushed the cakes back at me and said "THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THESE CAKES AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO PULL" and walked away back to where she had come from. I stood there in shock in my business attire floored by her actions. The manager appeared to be floored as well as the other two mothers. As a former business owner and current manager I have never experienced or displayed rude behavior as Ms. Moore did to me and the other mothers. I went to her business expecting an apology for our experience and possibly a refund or even a treat that my daughter may have enjoyed in return for her not enjoying her graduation cake. Instead Ms. Moore showed the other mothers and myself how unappreciative she was for the $100+ dollars we spent in her bakery and most importantly how the future business of the five families that we represented was not important to her. OK....I just had to take the time to write a review for this fabulous bakery!!! Our sons surprise 30th birthday was last saturday night. We were having a party for 50 at a local restaurant and wanted a couple of speciality cakes to celebrate this BIG birthday event!!! We met with Kerry the first of December, at the height of the holiday season, at yet he took the time to sit with us and completely design the cakes. Not only was he gracious, he was beyond helpful!!!! At our second meeting, he had the cake plans well underway!!! The first cake was a sheet cake, half vanilla with strawberry filling, half chocolate with banana filling. Our son plays sand volleyball on several teams, and this cake was devoted to SAND VOLLEYBALL!! IT WAS OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!!! We could not BELIEVE how absolutely beautiful this cake was when we came to pick it up! It was phenomenal!! Decorated to perfection, and packaged for us to take in the care safely!!! The second cake was a replica of our sons new CAMERO!!! Down to the last details, with a small antennae, rear defrost lines, headlights, and license plates!!! It was colored to perfection, tinted windows....sitting on a board that resembled a roadway, with HAPPY 30TH BIRTHDAY,,,written on the road, and not on the car! The car had the pinstripping and details exactly as the life size Camero!!!! This was a Carrott cake and blew everyone away!!!!! Our son has yet to cut it. Instead, has it wrapped and it is now in the freezer. He cant seem to cut this master piece!!! We cant express to Kerry and his staff our gratitude and appreciation at the amazing job they did with our cakes!! As beautiful as they looked, they tasted even better. No one at the restaurant could walk past the dessert table and NOT stop to oooooo and ahhhhhh at these master pieces. More pictures were taken of the cakes than of anything else that night!!! JUST DELICIOUS!!! THANK YOU KERRY AND ALL AT CALUMET for an outstanding job in making this a 30th birthday to remember for our son.....and all of his guests!!! The square cheesecake slices are my favorite here they are consistently good tasting. The danishes are great for office events they are usually packed with yummy fruit and the other pasteries are large in comparison to other bakeries but unfortunately they're not that tasty. I long ago stopped buying their cakes the frosting in both whip cream and buttercream is awful it has a greasy aftertaste and way too sweet, the cakes are dry not moist, everyone always loved the designs but the cake when servef would be nibbled on and thrown away. it's unfortunate you have to go out of your neighborhood to buy your celebration cakes but until they change their ingredients I won't buy cakes from this shop. read more

I order a cake for my mother 60th birthday, I had heard such wonderful thing about this bakery the cake were supposed to be the best in the area, I Ususally go to jewel or sams club,but i wanted to try some different i paid over 100 dollars for the cake.It was a beautiful cake but it was so dried it was almost unedible. i didn,t eat any of the cake but i heard later from the guest about how beautiful the cake was but it was so dried out.I had over half the cake left,I was going to bring it back to the store. so I called and talked to owner and he was nasty about it,saying how he had been in business thirty years and he has not had any complaints and there was nothing he could do about it.the cake at jewel are about a forth of the prices of cakes there and taste delicious and moist.I WOULD NEVER BUY ANOTHER CAKE FROM CALUMET BAKERY. read more

Calumet Bakery was always my go-to bakery this week and I ordered cookies for my granddaughter's birthday party as I asked 4 roller skate did the lady did make it clear that they had to download a picture of the roller skate and put it on the cookie I didn't know it was going to look like a kindergartener did it or the kindergartener cut the shape out also I was disappointed I ordered Emoji cookies and got a call back to find out the decorator didn't know how to do the little poop of emoji that was kind of sad for my granddaughter I don't think these cookies were up to the satisfaction of Calumet Bakery I've always been happy with anything I've got in there but this weekend it was very disappointed and so is my granddaughter with her birthday I don't think I'll be ordering from Calumet Bakery anytime soon again and that makes me sad read more

Very disappointed in the staff at Calumet Bakery in Lansing, IL. I called a week ago regarding an 8" tiramisu cake and was told yes they make. I called yesterday and talked to a gentleman and again was told yes they make and no issue to call the next day to pick up the following afternoon. Called early this morning and was put on hold and lady came back and told me they could not make an 8" for the next day but could do a 10" tiramisu cake, which made no sense. Called back to talk to Manager and talked to the same lady and asked why the two individuals I talked to or her did not know that you could not order day before but could get a 10" for the next day. She said she just found out that an 8" had to be ordered a week in advance. Sad that the staff taking orders were not aware of timing on ordering items, especially a Manager. read more

Mmmm...this bakery deserves every star. I had ordered a custom cake for my son's 5th birthday, I was VERY IMPRESSED!!!! The cake was delicious and was very fresh. I had a yellow cake with fresh strawberries between the two layers. The frosting was sweet and tasty. The design was amazing. My guests were in awe. I usually purchase cakes from Sam's club & Jewel. This cake was the best cake that I had ever tasted. Please stop in and order a cake today. You will not be disappointed. :) read more

We chose Calumet Bakery for my daughters wedding cake after visiting about six area bakeries. They were very accommodating for changes and design preferences. We paid almost $100 less than any other bakery in the area, and felt it was the best tasting too. read more

This was the worst experience I have ever had with customer service.... I do understand that there are times where they will be busy and I have to keep my patience, but if they ask who is next and choose the 2 other people behind me and purposely skip over me that's where I draw the line..... I wish they had a better way of handling customers but hopefully I won't ever have to come here again to purposely ignored as if I wasn't a paying customer trying to wait my turn in line and become overlooked. OMG....fantastic baked goods that bring back memories of all the great bakeries that used to dot the southeast side of Chicago! I make a point of stopping here whenever I'm in the neighborhood. My biggest weakness is their Hollywood rolls...a cross between a sweet roll & a sandwich roll...a sweet dough rippled with cinnamon & covered with poppyseeds. They're equally delicious with coffee or as a roll for a ham sandwich! This time I also picked up some cake donuts which my husband declared the "best he's ever had"...quite a compliment coming from a former construction worker! I've never picked a baked good from here that disappointed. Give it a try...no surprise they've been in business since 1935!!! read more

I ordered my cousins' birthday cake from Calumet Bakery and it was fantastic! I came in with what seemed like a difficult order, however the staff was EXTREMELY patient and listened to all of the details. The staff member Max took his time to listen to what I wanted the cake to include. He took pictures and made specific notes to ensure my vision would be replicated. He not once rushed or brushed my requests off. When I came to pick up the cake, I was blown away. Everything about the cake was perfect! The color was on point and the details were very neat and perfect! I also added a last-minute request upon picking up the cake which I feared could/would not be completed due to the late notice on my part, however two more staff member Stephanie and Jocelyn did not hesitate and got the job done! The customer service here is GREAT! The team did everything possible to make sure my wishes were met. I will definitely continue to buy a cake for any occasion here. They truly do an amazing job and the cake was so good that the guests were asking for seconds and the bakery responsible for not only a cake that looked amazing but tasted delicious as well. All my experiences at Calumet Bakery have always been great, however this past experience took the "cake" . I wouldn't dream of going anywhere else. Thought I would try this bakery as it is close to where my mother lives. With all the positive reviews, I was looking forward to experiencing a wonderful bakery. Unfortunately, Calumet Bakery (Torrence location) is decidedly mediocre. I'm not saying that it is bad, just middle of the road. I have come to this decision after two trips there, so I believe my opinion is valid. Someone on Yelp had mentioned their bacon covered pastry. Ugh. Fatty bacon with bits that get stuck in your teeth and overly and sickeningly sweet. The cannoli: soggy. Danish: okay. I think they use the same basic pastry dough for everything. The individual slices of cake are good and are fresh, flavorful and moist. The cheese slices were decent as were the cherry slices. They certainly do a brisk business any day of the week. There is a small seating area where you can enjoy a cup of coffee along with your pastry of choice. Parking is easy, too. All in all, there are far better bakeries, but if you do have a hankering for something sweet, Calumet Bakery will do in a pinch. By the way, their whole loaves of bread look delicious. The freshness of the bakery items is superb. If you go any where else you deserve what you get. It wont be Calumet Bakery worthiness!!!! The staff is very friendly and the bakery is very clean. You have to try the walnut coffee cake, cookies.....everything. They set the standard at Calumet Bakery. The building is beautiful inside, from the hand painted decorated walls to the luscious smells that greet you at the door! They misplaced our order which we called & confirmed twice. Never apologized for their errors. Manager had a horrible attitude. I guess they deal with many unsatisfied customers because they have a note by their cash register indicating that they don't tolerate rude customers plus once customers walk out with their product, it's considered as they accepted it and satisfied. I have been a patron for over 6 years. I ordered a cake (18) and left specific instructions as to the decorating and the wording AND the coloring! I got NOTHING I asked for. the cake looks like its for a 81 year old instead of a 18 year old. This cake was aprox 75 bucks. I was offered a $20 refund. I live 40 mins away and have guests coming and this ole lady cake. They basically gave me a cake they wanted and I paid for it! Their product may taste good BUT as a consumer if I dont get what I asked for then...what's the point. Lets add that the customer service was unusally poor. I travel through several towns and cross Indiana border for this mess. NEVER again. Customer lost forever! read more

Last year they made a huge mistake when making a cupcake shaped wedding dress for my stepdaughter's bridal shower. Not only did they redo the entire thing, but they delivered it and added a huge tray of delicious cookies. It was on time and looked (and tasted) even better than we expected. Extremely disappointed. We ordered our wedding cake from them and we were very clear about what we wanted. We ordered a simple three tier cake, no designs as the florist would be putting on real flowers (this was made clear and noted on the contract), and it was supposed to be red velvet. Apparently when the cake was delivered to the reception venue, it arrived with robin's egg blue frosted roses on it. The wedding coordinator at the reception venue, knowing the color scheme of my wedding, knew this could not possibly be the correct cake. She asked them to check the order again and they admitted it was designed wrong, but the cake itself was the right flavor. They were able to scrape off the frosting and the florist added the real flowers, so the cake looked fine to me when we got there. Upon cutting the cake at the reception, I was shocked to find a yellow cake inside, and even more shocked to find it was lemon. The owner called me the next day to apologize and offered me a full refund. Calumet Bakery's cakes are good, but that type of service is absolutely unacceptable, especially when you are spending that much money. My wedding day was absolutely perfect...besides the cake. read more
