First let me start by saying, I have been a patron of this restaurant for over 45 yrs. The old man is absolutely horrible!! Worst customer service ever!! literally harassed me for not wanting cheese. Then when my friend ordered no beans and he put them anyway. When she brought it to his attention, he smirked and said " that's why you don't have a husband!! Like he knows her personally!! Rude AF like always!!!...Would rate 0 starts if I could. The mouthy little kid at the register been taking lessons for the old man...he said go to Chubby's if you want free salsa and this is what you pay for homemade salsa...after I complained about salsa being $1 for a tiny salsa meanwhile I got 4 burritos. He also said at least he got $30 out of me when I said I wouldn't come back. Carnitas were dry and bland and the salsa was NOT EVEN GOOD tasted like a smushed up jalapeño, no seasoning or anything!! bean and cheese went downhill too!!!!! I discovered my favorite burrito at Camargos by accident when my husband brought home takeaway a few months ago. He ordered breakfast burritos (which we'd had before, I liked them okay- they put beans in them and I'm more of a cheese, eggs, potatoes, chile only kind of girl. Personal preference) but when he got home and we opened them up we'd gotten smothered bean and cheese. Too hungry/lazy to go back, we went ahead and ate them and I'm so glad we did. Turns out I love their smothered bean and cheese burrito. It's so good. (I don't have pictures because my takeaway box flipped and the results were NOT pretty, even though they still tasted good.) The beans are really flavorful and their tortillas are homemade and kind of thicker than usual, but that's even better for soaking up the chile, which has a little kick but isn't too spicy. I didn't rate this 5 stars because my husband won't go back with me anymore after trying their chorizo burrito which admittedly was a bit rough. You have to order from a window in the parking lot next to the entrance to the attached liquor store. It's kind of a unique set up, but don't let that turn you off. read more

They're just doing takeout for the moment. They have a make shift service window set up on the 44th side of the building. There's a tent out there in case you wanted to eat your food ASAP. I ordered a breakfast burrito and made some mods to it. Well, I made one mod, I asked for potatoes to be added to their sausage breakfast burrito. Just so you know, adding potatoes is $4. My mom used to take me to Camargo Tamales Restaurant when I was a kid. I don't remember if it was in the 70's or 80's when I first went. For me, Camargo's is nostalgic. The food is a good representation of old school DenMex (the kind which the city has hemorrhaged since gentrification). It is straight forward, legit, good food, and rates high for that. Camargo's is a hole in the wall place which has historically been mainly a take-out joint, and should be reviewed with that in mind. I say that because I see some reviewers having expectations which really don't apply. Camargo's is a Denver-in-the-know kind of place; it appeals to locals, and must be respected as such. I guess what I am trying to say is: Camargo's food is good quality, tasty, reliable, and represents DenMex well (with homemade tortillas which is a vulnerability of many local Mexican places). It is not, however, intended to be what it is not, a like a sophisticated sit-down, service-oriented, other-region-of-Mexican-food, hipster place. read more

Cheap and delicious. I followed the cues from other reviewers and ordered the bean & cheese burrito smothered. The green chili sauce is not at all what I was expecting but was delicious. For the uninitiated among you it's a lot like a chunky gravy and well worth adding on. Spice level: mild. This burrito made a great breakfast the next day. I also had the shrimp burrito which was flavorful and a bit more spicy. It comes with onions and jalapeno. Absolutely recommend. The two burritos came to $10, so a good deal also. I've been coming to Camargo almost every Saturday morning for the past few years for a reason. There's a walk-up window and covered area to wait for your order which makes it easy to grab and go. The people who work here are always friendly and welcoming, and the breakfast burritos are one-of-a-kind. They're $4.50 before 8:30 am but worth so much more. I always get chorizo and egg, which comes with a thin layer of refried beans and chili in a thick homemade tortilla. They are delicious! The smothered Carne Desebrada burrito is the only thing I order...why mess with the perfect burrito. I always wonder how they make it - they disappear into the back, and in a few minutes...you get this amazing burrito. I usually order one in the pool (smothered), and one with chile inside. This place is an experience for sure. A small, hole in the wall staple in north Denver, the restaurant shares space with a liquor store (though ironically) doesn't sell alcohol, and has a small entrance that you could easily walk by. Once inside the place has one of the largest menus (actually there are 2 different ones) as well as meal options on posterboard hanging from the ceiling and walls touting the variety of menu options offered. The staff is very welcoming as well as confident in the their product. I'd agree the Mexican food is more Colorado/US style than traditional Mexican food, but it has all the staples at an affordable price. For those without dietary restrictions, it seems like the Camargo special is the way to go which features a humongous homemade flour tortilla wrapped in your choice of burrito fixings and with the option to deep fried. It is huge and looks like it would not disappoint. Serving sizes are fairly large (especially the burritos or combo deals) and salsa/guac/chips is nothing special so I would skip it and go straight for the main course. read more

I was introduced to Camargo's tamales years ago when someone brought them to a work potluck. Hands down, the best tamales I have ever had. I usually get a couple dozen at a time and have never been disappointed. Ask for a plastic fork...you won't be able to get them home before you have to dive in! I have never actually sat and dined in the place, never had anything other than the tamales (why would I?), and yes, the decor is full-on overload, but I have always been treated kindly and the down-to-earth qualities are a pleasant surprise. Let's get the obvious out of the way - it's an old place, and looks rough on the inside and outside - the owner can be a cranky old cuss, but he's truly a good-hearted guy so just let it slide and be patient. If you can withhold your judgement on the 2 biggest offenses then you're in for some of Denver's most authentic and flavorful Mexican food. I have been going here for more then 20 years and it's always been the same. Beer posters with well endowed beer-maids on the ceiling, hand painted menu on the back wall, a cartoonish hand-painted mural of Denver, crappy plastic booths from some fast food joint that shuttered long ago, and pad-locked coolers with beverages kept safe from little hooligans from the neighborhood from taking them when the staff is hard at work in the back. FYI this is Denver Mexican, not Baja, not Southwest. Don't base your food expectations on some crappy fast food joint. The highlights of the menu are the basics (don't try to order some Chipotle/Doba ish here). My favorite, the beef & bean burrito, smothered/plain (amazing tortillas, beans with flavor, tender potatoes to add some heft, and the green chile..... it's perfection, not too hot, full of flavor and pork).
