I am writing this review on behalf of my niece, who was a patient of Dr. Riano's. Our family was not satisfied with the results of the smile makeover. My sister tried to explain to Dr. Riano and his dental assistant that the canine tooth does not seem to be straight, but they insist that there is nothing else they could do about it. I just joined Yelp to write this review! I have been going to Dr. Riano's office to straighten my freaky teeth since fall of 2017. It was amazing experience and not even once Dr. Riano and his staff (literally everyone) made me feel less than happy and satisfied. Also, I am really not getting paid / provided anything. Just really honest review. 1. Treatment I did half incognito (upper side) and regular braces. First off, I loved incognito! If you are over 20 and having a braces (especially if you have a job to meet people) it is just a stress to feel self-conscious about how you would look. Incognito was perfect for me. It did not show, it is easy to manage (I had both incog and non-incog - and it was not harder to manage). There was not a lot of DDS who are expert in Incognito, but Dr.Riano had so many great reviews on his work with incognito. - I am adding one more to that! it was perfect for me. Also his suggestion to do half was very nice cuz it lowered the price and decreased the pain. Lower case was not showing much even with regular braces anyways. I really appreciated the suggestion. 2. Dr. Riano He is the best! so professional, encouraging and always explaining what is going on clearly. I can also feel that he really does his best to bring out the best result. Not to mention he is a generally friendly and sweet person. 3. Staff I loved staff members! In the past, I had been discouraged by abrasive staffs of different clinics for different occasion (I think that is shared experience in medical field) Honestly, not even ONCE i felt like Dr. Riano's office made me feel any less than welcoming, accommodating and excellent. Expenses I was told by one person I referred and also some of reviews in here about the high price or extra fees(?)...I have not been to too many other places to consult (another orth and studio dental) so I wouldnt know how much of the discrepancy is. Honestly, my case was pretty serious. Other ortho gave up on me saying that "yeah, you should see more experience dr." (which was appalling honestly) - and after that, I did not want to skimp money for better service or responsibility. It is medical treatment. Sometimes Dr cannot predict what will happen to your condition and there will be things that are out of their control. I just wanted Doctor who would be responsible and know what to do. I got a comments from my general dentist friend to avoid some "experimental" establishments and go for someone like Dr.Riano who has been in the business with reputation and trust. (I had some incident with studio Dental...I had been in so much stress with their incompetency) Cost comes with it I suppose. Long story short: It might have been expensive for others, but I feel like it was totally worth it. I was never charged for lost brackets or missed appointments and So far, I have not lost my retainer... (caveat: i never really missed appointments even thought i was late for some :p). I was happy to pay not lowest price for the sanity of my mind. Honestly, it is upto your priority. I wanted to priotize safety and excellency. If you think your case could be treated very lightly and also does not need too much of attention, I think maybe your priority may be different from mine. Felt like he overpromised and underdelivered with my lingual braces. Said he could move my teeth how I wanted when I made purchase, then while doing braces it was constant "we can't do that." He refused to alter his plan once we started I did it for cosmetic reasons, very minor, smile was decent to begin with, and I felt like he was more of a children's orthodontist getting into the cosmetic orthodontics business, without the cosmetic eye and mindset Every time I spoke about a cosmetic concern he seemed annoyed, like "that doesn't matter" and "we can't do that." Pleasant guy, staff is nice, and my smile IS improved (bite is centered, mostly closed - I wear my retainer at night and there's been some shift back, more than I expected they would, but still improved from before - bottom teeth straighter), so 3 stars not 2, but I got about 50% of results I was looking for. I can't say enough great things about this practice. We started with a different orthodontist so have a good basis for comparison and it's been like night & day. While at the other place, making appointments was a nightmare - no availability; here it's a breeze. I've never had a problem getting the time/day I wanted. Camilo Riano's office is super professional, know their stuff & work great with kids. The other place put my kid through literal mouth torture repeatedly-- gluing & ungluing permanent expanders which were installed incorrectly & had to be undone. Parking nearby is easy & finally, the office is large, beautiful, bright with contemporary architectural touches & they serve you tea. Dr. Riaño and his team are phenomenal... I have lingual braces and saw significant results within months.   Smiling was once my greatest insecurity. I hated taking photos. The only thing that seemed worse than smiling for a camera was walking around with braces or visible orthodontic equipment. Lingual braces have been a miracle. The initial discomfort was minimal and now I forget I'm wearing them most of the time! On top of that, Dr. Riaño and his team have been incredible during covid. They're super thoughtful about ensuring the safety of their patients and staff. The office is super clean and there is minimal overlapping patient traffic. Could not recommend them more highly. I do not recommend this practice. Dr Riano and team were supposed to fix my teeth which potentially were causing my gums to recede too fast. Well, I just had my second gum graft surgery so safe to say the Invisalign didn't work. I was skeptical orthodontics had anything to do with my gum issues. I went in because my dentist said a free evaluation wouldn't hurt. Of course they evaluated me and promised they would fix it and I spent $4k+ hoping they would. Nothing changed besides my teeth being slightly straighter. Not only that, but a couple years after my treatment I finally wore through my retainer. I called to get a new one - they threw away the mold! They said I'd have to come back in for a one hour measurement and pay $1,000 more for a new retainer. After paying $4k for full treatment. Dr Riano once told me any patient of his is a patient for life. I don't believe that. That has not been my experience. read more

Even other previous patients are coming back post treatment to tell their experiences, listen to the one-star reviews for Dr. Riano! TL;DR I'm paying the equivalent of what I paid for my treatment with Dr. Riano at a new orthodontist to fix what Dr. Riano was not able to do in his estimated 18-20 months which were drawn out to 28 months. Do yourself a favor and find yourself a different orthodontist that values their patients. Disclaimer: I'm a firm believer that no one gets better without honest feedback to learn from in order to improve so here we go... The one thing Dr. Riano is best at is overpromising and underdelivering. From his gruff hand skills (you feel like you're a patient getting free dental care in a remote part of the world) to his disorganization of managing his staff (which he has high turnover for his receptionists), I was extremely disappointed in his way of handling my case. For full transparency, I am writing this an entire year after finishing treatment with him and I moved states towards the end of my treatment but after having that amount of time to reflect I want everyone to know what I went through. Beginning with my first bonding appointment. Bonding was painful (to be expected) but he is super aggressive with his hand skills and not only that but I realized once I got home my teeth were not in the proper positions to eat and my tongue kept catching on the wires (I got lingual braces for one half which are more complex) so I had to go back again to the office that same day luckily and get adjusted again (not a great first impression but I was understanding). Once I announced I would be moving states, I was told I should be able to get my braces off before I moved but this was not the case. Instead (out of me trying to be flexible with something that was out of their control) I flew back and forth from Oregon back to California for my adjustments every 6-8 weeks for nearly a year in hopes that I would get them off sooner than later. Then my flexibility became an assumption that I could come back whenever (Which wasn't the case) to the point where at my penultimate appointment I scheduled my "last appointment" and was reassured it would be the last one and they'd have my retainer done that day as well (it's important to save this investment I made right?). The receptionist hmm'd and ha'd and asked the doctor, "it looks like you're out that day, are you sure you can come in?" And he replied that he'd make it work. Fast forward to 2 days before the appointment, the receptionist calls and says he can't make it because he'll be at a conference that day, and asks if I can come in a different day instead. I lived in a different state (the majority of them knew that) and they have the audacity to ask me if I can just come in a different day?! No one apologizes or empathizes, you feel like you're inconveniencing them! I let them know that wasn't going to work due to costs and my work schedule so they let me know the doctor could do a later appointment and the retainer would still be done in time. On the day of my "last appointment", I notice my midlines are off and I still have a gap. He says "the retainer will correct it and actually can you come back again? The retainer won't be done by EOD." I asked, "is there a way to mail the retainer instead and will this affect my alignment at all?" They say sure, no problem we'll mail it to you and your alignment will be fine. Fly back go Oregon and within a couple of days my teeth have shifted a little and no retainer in sight. I check back with them and they assure me it will be in within the next day or so. Five days later the retainer arrives and putting it on and off feels like I'm self extracting my lateral incisor. I call back and they assure me it's fine. Keep wearing it and same thing keeps happening. At this point I'm so spent flying back and forth that I give up. I eventually un-jaded myself from Orthodontia, I consult a new orthodontist in Oregon and get confirmation that my intuition was right. Dr. Riano did a terrible job at managing expectations and I ended up having to pay for it (literally). He set me up for failure, gave me a retainer that didn't fit properly for sake of dusting his hands off and calling it good. Now I'm paying for a new 15 month treatment plan to correct what he couldn't do. At least I was nowhere where I was before treatment but now my husband and I are paying for his lack of proper patient management. read more

I was a patient at the clinic for almost 2 years and went through the Invisalign treatment and I am very disappointed with my experience here. Everything is rushed, the doctor doesn't explain the patient in advance what actions he's going to take (he almost shaved the inside of my teeth off to "fix" the bite right after I told him I wasn't happy with the alignment of the teeth to begin with and when I asked him what he was doing he got defensive). The doctor fails at giving the patient a rundown of all the issues they have - only when I got a second and third opinions did I find out that after completing my treatment, my bite on one side was incorrect and no one at Camilo Riano mentioned it to me or suggested ways of fixing it. The doctor acted very unprofessionally and made me very uncomfortable once I brought these concerns to him, raised his voice multiple times and was very defensive. I can keep going, the bottom line is, after spending $5500 and being a patient for 2 years, I don't trust the clinic to continue my treatment since I'm still unhappy with my smile, so I decided to move to a different clinic and pay more... The clinic has a "good enough" attitude and from my personal experience, I walked in with an imperfection in my smile wanting my teeth to be perfect and walked away with another imperfection. As a disclaimer, it's been a few years since I've been a patient here. I remember consultation went well and remember being impressed with Dr. Riano, staff, and their ultra chic/ultra modern office. So much so that I didn't shop around afterward. I let Dr. Riano's wife check my insurance and eligibility to figure out what my expenses would look like after insurance kicked in. Everything looked good so I signed and committed to cost, date and services. Right before my first tray fitting, I was told that I owe money. Excuse me? I was under the impression my entire balance was paid... now I'm told I owe twice their original quote. Per his wife, they don't take dual coverage from same employer... ok? Makes sense... but why was this left out before I signed? You knew both insurances were under the same employer because we discussed in detail where both I and other subscriber work. This is something I should have been informed of BEFOREHAND. She and I went back and forth over how inconvenient it was but she didn't care. Looking back, I believe that I missed out on a great experience with my orthodontist. There was absolutely no apology or acknowledgement of how sucky the situation was. It was horrible and it felt like I was just gotten over on. Every fitting, Maria or Dr. Riano were friendly but I knew they were aware of what happened and how upset it made me. It was frustrating passing by his wife at her desk- the same desk she sat down to go over papers with me- because it replays the entire scenario of how misled and ignored I felt. I was stuck feeling like this every appointment for a little over a year. I could not wait for it to be over. Once over, and after I used up my ortho benefit... I'm constantly reminded about how I wish I had shopped around more or that I was given the correct quote from the very beginning. To make matters worse, Dr. Riano shaved spaces in between my teeth to help shift or straighten with the trays. Some spaces have not closed up. There's still separation between some teeth so eating pasta and getting it stuck in the narrow gaps, for example, is another constant reminder of my experience. Talk about regrets. read more

I've always been a bit self-conscious of my teeth and wanted to get them straightened. After visiting one dentist, they said I needed to get all of my wisdom teeth removed before they could do anything. Upon a recommendation, I went to Dr. Riaño. My first visit was a pleasant experience: the staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. Dr. Riaño said he'd be able to straighten my teeth without needing to take out any wisdom teeth, which was great. He recommended Invisalign for my specific case and said that it would take about 18 months. Fast forward 22 months, and I'm delighted at the results. My teeth are straight, I feel a lot better about my smile, and the improvement in my bite is noticeable. The treatment took about 4 months longer than planned since my teeth moved differently than expected, but Dr. Riaño was proactive about noticing discrepancies in the initial plan. This will be my final review for Dr. Riano. I am so happy that I have "graduated" from ortho visits, but also sad because I'll miss him and his team. I started my Invisalign treatment in late 2015 and was referred to Dr. Riano by my dentist. I never felt pressured to choose Invisalign - instead, Dr. Riano walked me through all my different options and explained the pros/cons of each. In the end, I chose to go the Invisalign route for various reasons including 1) my numerous speaking & publicity engagements at the time, and 2) my gum issues which would have been aggravated further if I didn't floss religiously. Invisalign gave me the option of being brace-less when I needed to. Fast forward to the end of my first set of treatments, and I'm satisfied with my results. Dr. Riano is not, wants to continue treatment because he feels he can push for even more results. We agree on a second set of treatments (no additional fee) and after that he is satisfied. He has me coming back for frequent appointments, with the time in-between getting longer and longer (2 weeks, then 1 month, 2 months, etc.) until he was satisfied. A few weeks ago I went in for a 6 month checkup. He still fussed with my bite and did another adjustment. The smile he had when he heard that "click" is priceless. I am now officially done and only wear my retainers at night because of my teeth clenching and teeth grinding. I will miss the wonderful and warm staff at Dr. Riano's office very much! read more

I never write reviews, but Dr. Riano is the best kept secret for dental care in San Francisco. I had the opportunity to have most of my Invisalign paid for by my existing dental plan - if I chose another doctor...and I gave that up to choose Dr. Riano instead. You start out with inviting, comfortable and very professional treatment from the staff. Then they have a "very" thorough analysis process to access your situation; for me I was there to have my teeth straightened via Invisalign. They used advanced computer software to get images and show me those images over the time period of expected change in the movement of my teeth. I came back every 3 weeks for over a year, and after my teeth were not finished at the end (maybe because I was not wearing my trays all day like I was supposed to) Dr. Riano re-did the scans and gave me new trays to finalize my teeth movement without charging me anything extra. The best part is that he is half the cost of other providers. Half the cost, twice the quality and professionalism - you make the call. read more

I cracked a tooth (from a lifetime of chewing ice) it took nine months to get an implant done, and by then my retainer didn't fit. I've been here once to have my permanent retainer evaluated. It recently came loose again and I booked an appointment to have it re-glued. Their receptionist cancelled my appointment and called me to tell me they will not fix permanent retainers, they will only remove them and replace them with $600 plastic retainers. So I'm not sure what the deal is with this place but if you're looking for maintenance in the years after having braces, look elsewhere. read more

I came here a few years back because I had one crooked tooth in front and I wanted to correct it. I never smiled because I was self conscious of it. I was told they could fix it, easily. I just had to pay 6k, and thought it was worth it, so I treated myself. Long story short, my tooth is still crooked, and chipped from the back from all they glue the put on and off, and I now I have a wide gap in my back tooth area, when they tried but failed to make room for my tooth to move, but didn't. Now, I'm told so much damaged was done to my teeth due to poor execution I might have to remove teeth and get fake ones! After 2 years of going in, I was told that my treatment was done, but I was not happy, my tooth was still crooked, and the DR. Riano said he could do better and acknowledged it was poorly done the first time around and offered to try again but nothing changed. I still have a crooked tooth, still not smiling and I'm just left feeling like a fool and like I was conned. Now my two front teeth are damaged, and worse than before, and it really bothers me. Every time I go to the dentist they recommend I do invisiline and remind me of how poorly this place did their job, and how I wasted 6k for nothing. I get so upset, years of wasted time, and money and mediocre customer service to have them just ruin my teeth and not fix the problem I initially went in for. I was sold on something they couldn't deliver on. So, watch out, they are very good sales people.I know people who have gotten their teeth fixed and it was much worse than mine, so I don't understand, how I spent more money and time to have worse teeth in the end. Overall I have had a unpleasant experience here, but the location is nice, office is clean, and staff can be overall friendly, but gossipy and I caught them talking about me, thinking I couldn't hear them, and I confronted them and got an apology but it was a little to late and felt a bias towards me, and it felt like but they choose which clients get their best treatment and neglect others if they don't suck up to them. The team staff was dishonest with me prior to signing the contract and they now are asking me for additional $1000+. At the time of signing the contract, K. Haile informed me that $2,000 would be claimed from Delta in the 1st year (2017) of treatment. With that in mind, I had paid the full balance $4600+ upfront. After 2.3 years of treatment, the clinic now asked me to pay additional $1000+. They said K. Haile told me wrong information but she has left so they can't say on her behalf. I first went to Dr. Riano a couple of years ago to take a look at my particular situation to see if there was anything that could be done. I had crooked teeth, and a pretty bad open bite (when I clamped my teeth together, there was an open space between the top front teeth and the bottom). Several years before, I was told by another orthodontist that I was going to need 3 years of braces, AND jaw surgery. I couldn't imagine putting myself through this, especially in my mid 20s. Dr Riano said that he could fix my bite and straighten my teeth with no surgery in a year and a half either with invisalign or incognito braces. I chose incognito braces. A year and a half or so later, I was all done, and I couldn't be more happy with the results! The incognito braces were tough, don't get me wrong. They involve some pain. My tongue hurt like crazy at times. It took me a little while to be able to speak normally. But it was so worth it. Most people didn't know that I had braces. Even more, I absolutely love Dr Riano and his staff. They are so incredibly friendly, professional, hard working, and accommodating. My case was pretty challenging, especially considering that my front tooth has a crown on it which is much more difficult to work with for orthodontics. It has been almost a year since I've finished my treatment with Dr. Riano and he still takes incredible care of me. If I have any issues with my retainer, or the permanent retainer comes loose from my crown (which happens), they get me right in and taken care of. Thank you to Dr. Riano and his staff! They always remembered me when I visited the office and are very organized and efficient. Most of my appointments lasted less than 30 minutes. Despite the quick service, I never feel like a number. The team took special care to examine my progress, make alterations, and answer any questions I had. I met with Dr. Riaño at every visit, which isn't the case at other offices. I completed my treatment and have never smiled more in my life (which my friends and family always comment on). I actually cried after my final appointment, finally letting go of years of insecurities thanks to this team. Avoid this place! I came here because it was close to my work. I couldn't find another dentist in Hayes Valley/Civic Center and a co-worker suggested this place to the rest of the office. A couple of us ended up coming here. She got a $25 gift certificate for everyone she recommended. The office is very posh, like an upscale day spa. If there were a "Real Housewives of San Francisco" show, they would probably tape a segment here. They even offer you your choice of tea when you come in. The office is in a beautiful building with a great view. And the staff is very friendly. Those are the positives and they have nothing to do with the actual dental care. The first time I came in, I got X-rays and a teeth cleaning, then the dentist examined my teeth. The teeth cleaning didn't seem very thorough at all. I still felt like there was plaque on my teeth after she finished. Even the dentist asked, "Did you already get your teeth cleaning today?" when he looked at my teeth! I had even brushed and flossed right before the cleaning! This has never happened at any other dentist I've seen. It turned out I had two cavities so I made an appointment to come in a week and a half later. When I came in for that appointment, they wanted to take X-rays *again* so I objected because I had literally *just* had X-rays done in their office. I asked why they wanted to do it again and the dental assistant was very vague and couldn't give me a reason, just a general explanation of why dentists need X-rays. The dentist also gave me a hard time about not agreeing to more X-rays but, again, couldn't explain why I needed a second set of X-rays less than two weeks later. I'm guessing either they messed up the first X-rays (but didn't want to admit it) or they wanted to do more X-rays to bill my insurance again. Seemed very shady to me. So then I had a cavity filled (was supposed to be two), which was an awful experience. The whole time, the dentist was knocking my teeth and lips with the metal tools. He pinched the corner of my lips twice, so I had two small cuts on my lip. I've never had a dentist be so reckless with the tools. When I was leaving, the receptionist said we needed to schedule a second appointment to fill the second cavity. I asked why it wasn't done that day (it was so traumatic, I didn't realize he only filled one). She said that they only alloted enough time to do one cavity. I asked why they didn't schedule enough time, when they knew that I had two cavities. No answer. She was really nice, so I didn't want to be pushy but I wasn't happy. This has never happened at any other dental office I've been to. Again, I wonder if it's an insurance scam--maybe they get more money the more appointments they make? I decided to never come back. It was inconvenient to miss more work because they didn't schedule enough time to do two fillings. Not to mention the pain and suffering. My co-workers had similarly negative experiences. One had to have the same cavity refilled twice times before she finally decided to go to her dentist back in her hometown, several hours drive away! Stay away! read more

I decided to see Dr. Riaño when I found out that his practice offered Incognito (behind the teeth) braces. During my consultation, Dr. Riaño told me about Acceledent, which is essentially a vibrating mouthguard-like device that is used once a day for 20 minutes, and is touted to accelerate orthodontic treatment/shorten the time needed to wear braces. I decided to move forward with an an Incognito + Acceledent treatment program, because - let's be real - being an adult with braces is not the coolest. I have had my Incognito braces for about 7 months now, and I've seen a remarkable difference in my smile in such a short amount of time. Acceledent is not only helping my teeth move quickly, but is also effective in helping me manage pain following adjustments. It feels almost as good as getting a massage after an intense workout. I'm very pleased with my time with Dr. Riaño and his team, and I'm thankful to be one of his patients taking advantage of this cutting edge (no pun intended) Orthodontic treatment. read more

My teeth have moved so quickly after using invisalign with Dr. Riano. So many of my family & friends have commented about how good my teeth look. When I first wanted to straighten my teeth everyone tried to talk me out of it, but I knew I needed to do it. It's the best thing I've ever done! I change my invisalign trays every week and the difference is amazing! I had an over bite and my bite is so much better the gaps between my front and back teeth are nearly gone. I've had invisalign for less than a year and the difference is fantastic, I'm delighted I did it! My trays are only uncomfortable the first day so I try to eat soft foods that day. I was in town for work and had an Orthodontist issue that needed to be treated in SF since I wouldn't be able to see my normal Orthodontist in LA. I found Camilo Riano through Yelp, and called them up. He would be able to see me that same afternoon. Everything was great--nice Orthodontist, beautiful office, good staff, and convenient location! I was 25 year old and finally decided to straighten my crooked teeth. I originally picked this place because it was inside of my network and was very conveniently located. But along the way I was very pleased with quality of service. Stuff is always tries their best to adjust to your needs and schedule. With their help I decided to move with top incognito and bottom regular braces treatment. It was pretty good suggestion, since my bottom teeth are not really visible and no need to hide the brace line there. Plus it is more uncomfortable to have incognito on bottom, than on top because of your tongue. It was very easy to communicate with them when I needed to change my appointment because of some last minute change. Unfortunately at some point I needed to stop my treatment because of my health condition, but again Dr. Riano was very understanding and we found most optimal way to get the best result possible in a situation. I also recommended this place to my husband and he did invisialign for some small adjustment in his bite. read more
