First off, I'm not a "review" kind of guy. But this place is really good and deserves a good to great review. I got the 4 item combo, two pork tamales and two chile rellenos. I got it for take out and sat at the bar while they made it. At the bar I had a tall Modelo and a healthy pour of 400 Canejos mezcal, neat, on the recommendation of the bar tender. I really like smoky liquors, like Islay scotch. The 400 Conwjos is very smooth and somewhat smoky. It has a very nice flavor and was a great recommendation, though next time I would ask for something with more smoke. I'm sure the bartender would have a good recommendation. Everything was really good and I'll definitely go back. The green sauce on the rellenos, which were stuffed with chicken and cheese, was a great blend of picante and savory flavor. The rellenos were large, slightly spicy poblanos with a rich egg batter and covered with that tasty green sauce. The tamales were pork stuffed with a slightly spicy red sauce seasoning in the pork. I got the white sauce on the tamales and it added to and balanced the spice of the pork very nicely. All in all, everything was very good and I definitely recommend everything that I ordered. And here is the kicker. My bill was $38.00! I left a pretty healthy tip. So, to sum this up, I highly recommend this place! Really good food. Solid bar with knowledgeable bartenders. Sadly, we waited 45 minutes to be seated for Sunday Brunch only to be told that the only table large enough to seat our party of six, had been there since the restaurant opened and weren't showing any signs of leaving. It was almost 2 p.m. (brunch ends at 2) when we spoke to the hostess about being seated after waiting patiently for 45 minutes. I've dined here many times and at their other restaurants (Vida Vegan when it was open and Bakersfield Pizza Co) and I've never experienced an extreme wait time like this. Came in on a Friday at 4pm and enjoyed their appetizers menu with 2 small street tacos and their papas tacos, chips and salsa, and 2 house margaritas all of which was $5 each. Service was friendly but a tad slow, bartender was nice but it was just him and a pretty full bar. The music was pretty loud and the other folks were also pretty loud so not a great date spot for me and hubby, we wanted to talk and catch up after a long week so it was little tough. The dude and i absolutely LOVE coming to Camino Real Kitchen & Tequila as this is our go to every single time we pass through Bakersfield. No hesitation. They have the best happy hour, incredible food, and prices that honestly can't be beat. They been here for me when I was not a vegetarian and now am! Various options for us vegetarians yay!! Shoutout to the bar manager or owner (not totally sure, but he's a gem). He consistently checks in, makes sure the drinks are right, the food is on point, and the experience is solid every time. We came in on 2/20/26 and there was no bar seating available. Without us even asking, he pulled a table in from outside so we could still be comfortable. That level of hospitality is rare. We were more than happy to sit outside in the shivering cold xD BUT he was like nope. We also tip but made sure to tip extra because that effort didn't go unnoticed. He made the dude's special weekend even more special, and that's why we keep coming back. Consistent, welcoming, and top-tier service. This place is a Bakersfield staple. The music is on point too! It's been a minute since we've been here- I have always liked the food and I'm happy to report- it hasn't changed. Sat in the bar, lots of windows, small, plenty of high tops and a nice bar top, large tequila selection. Waiter/bartender was super nice- was the only one working the bar area and kept up. The service was just okay, and the food lacked flavor and the love that once made their dishes feel authentic and special. We ordered a couple of samplers, and most of the food just tasted overly fried, almost like it had been cooked in old oil. Overall, it was disappointing compared to how good this place used to be. Back again. My wife kept going on and on about the Dorados tacos, and how much she enjoyed them last time, and how she was craving them, etc. So back again. This time she also made sure to get her Spinach Queso dip that she likes so much. Honestly, it doesn't look that great but it is super tasty. Nice and creamy flavor with added spinach for a great texture and bite. I visited Camino Real for Happy Hour, and the food was just OK, nothing special. Service was a little slow, especially for bar drinks. The friendly staff & ambiance with good music make up for the food & slow service. Tried the 5 bites for $20, which was a lot of food for only $20. Selected Items: Nachitos (red), Mojo Bread, Buffalo Fries, Chipotle Chimis, & Happy Dog. My favorite item was the Nachitos, which had good flavor and a lot of meat. I love hot dogs but I was a little disappointed with the sausage. I guess my expectations were too high. The Chipotle Chimis were okay, not as crispy as you'd expect, more like soggy. I just tasted the beans, no chorizo. The Buffalo Fries were too salty for me. On the other hand, the bar drinks were actually good! Came in for a Father's Day dinner and enjoyed my time there. The environment was spacious, clean, and lively since the World Cup games were playing on the tv's. The waitress was very friendly and super patient with our group. We ordered a few items but the one that was a hit was the family style carne asada. It had a variety of meats with jalapeños, potatoes and cheese at the bottom and sides of rice and beans. I want to start by saying this place earns four stars from me because the food is absolutely amazing. That said, I'm a pretty vocal person, and when I saw the portion size that came out, I spoke up. I let our server know that the portion felt a bit small for what we expected. She handled it very well--she was calm, respectful, and apologized, which I appreciated because it clearly wasn't her fault. Alejandro, the owner, came out to speak with us, and I have to say, he's a genuinely great guy. He was open to hearing feedback (what I'd call constructive criticism) and took the time to explain their approach. He mentioned that their portions may appear smaller because the food--especially the rice--is more compact, and that their beans aren't watered down like at some other places. I can respect that explanation, but I do have to disagree. At most restaurants, we usually leave with leftovers. In this case, I found myself still eating off my girlfriend's plate, and we didn't have anything to take home. That said, I really respect that he came out personally to talk with us. That level of customer service goes a long way. To be fair, their buffet is unlimited, and that's something I highly recommend. Every time we've come before, we've done the buffet, and this was our first time ordering a regular dinner. Honestly, the portion size surprised me compared to what we're used to. I did make sure to tell Alejandro that their food is better than most restaurants in the Bakersfield area--it's truly top tier. We'll definitely be coming back, but most likely for the buffet, where portion size isn't an issue since it's all-you-can-eat. I also want to highlight the customer service. That's something many restaurants struggle with, but they got it right here. Our server was respectful and handled the situation professionally, and Alejandro didn't have to come out and address it personally--but he did. That kind of effort makes a difference. If you're planning to visit, I'd recommend coming during brunch for the buffet experience. The food is excellent. I do think increasing the dinner portion sizes would make the experience even better. I've been craving these chili verde fries all week, so I finally ordered them for lunch today. When I got them, the portion was giving "inflation is real." For $17 it was a pretty small plate and it was missing the chicharrón and jalapeños. I even moved everything around in the container like I was on a treasure hunt just to make sure they weren't hiding in there... but nope. This is probably the 5th or 6th time my wife and I have lunched there. The minute we walk in we're greeted a sincere and smiling face like we're long lost cousins and said she'd be right back. A minute later another server popped asking if we'd been helped yet. He went and verified the table was available and sat us right away. Another minute later...Another server asked what we'd like to drink and left the specialty menus on the table for us. My wife scanned the QR code on it for the expanded version. The daily lunch specials for $10 looked like a great deal. She ordered the bowl. I was considering enchiladas but ordered the 2 beef tacos and a burrito with beans, rice and shredded beef. Our waiter (Tony) promised me I'd love it (or he'd eat it for me!). The plates came out in perfect time. Mine also included chips and salsa plus a warm white cheddar cheese dip... OMG it was soo good!!! As fabulous as it was, I couldn't finish it because it was such a generous portion. Nor could my wife finish hers. The restaurant is clean and comfortable with a cool array of wine bottles on the walls with comfortable booths and tables that aren't crowded too close to each other. The entire staff works together like one well-oiled machine, all crossing over to ensure every guest has whatever they want. I can't wait to return. Came back a few years after my first review and I now have a different opinion. Came over for a family dinner and the staff was so accommodating and well trained. My family is definitely hard to handle but Alejandro and Jose made our experience great! Mi Boda - 9/10 I learned the restaurant owner served at his wedding and it was honor enjoying a dish as complex as this one. The hash underneath the steak was well seasoned, cheesy, and just such a delight. Elote Wings - 9/10 I'd tell you to make sure to finish this in one sitting but I'm sure you will. The cheese will make the wings soggy if you save it for later. Queso Fundido - 10/10 They called this something else on the menu but I'm so glad we had this. Blew everyone away! Rosarito Burrito - 15/10!!! This has a cheese I cannot comprehend. It has a spice that will tingle your savory taste buds. Hard to pinpoint what it is and I know they keep it a secret. Came here for all day happy hour again on Wed. We took a break from them to visit new Mexican restaurants, but we came back. All the happy hour bites are noomy and their draft beer is the perfect temperature. If you like good appetizers to go with ice cold beer, you won't regret coming here. Had a 730 reservation waited 30 minutes before asking for a server then was completely ignored by staff for another 45 min before speaking to the manager a nice lady but doesn't have any business running that place we just left. 0/5 stars -- We've Never Walked Out on a Restaurant. You Accomplished Something. I've eaten at gas stations with more soul than this place. Save yourself the misery and read every word of this before you consider walking through that door. We arrived on a Saturday at 7 PM - not busy, no wait - and somehow still managed to have the most infuriating dining experience of our lives. (Also, please see Susan's review, because apparently this disaster is a recurring theme here). Let's start with the chips and salsa, because it deserves its own paragraph. $3 for chips and salsa - fine, whatever, annoying but acceptable. NOT refillable? Wild. I asked our server if the portion was large, and she assured me it was "decent." What arrived was a portion the size of my literal hand. My hand. For $3. When we asked about more chips, we were quoted and $2. We didn't agree to more chips, but they came out anyways, with no salsa. When we asked for salsa to accompany the chips we didn't even order, they quoted us an additional $1. At a Mexican restaurant. For salsa. We then asked whether our actual ($20+) entrées - fajitas and fish tacos - came with salsa. The answer was no. I don't know what kind of fever dream operation this is, but charging separately for salsa at a Mexican restaurant is the culinary equivalent of a hotel charging for air conditioning. It's not creative pricing. It's a scam. Now, the service. Water took 5 minutes. Chips took 10. Our server greeted us, took our order, and then disappeared into the void, never to return. Around the 20-minute mark, we had to flag down a completely different server to ask about my fiancée's cocktail - which she had been genuinely excited about from their extensive cocktail menu. We were told the bar "lost the ticket." The bar lost the ticket...On a slow Saturday night. After 30+ minutes, the fish tacos finally arrived. The fajitas did not. We had reached our limit. We left. We have NEVER walked out of a restaurant after food arrived, but we simply could not justify sitting there for another second, paying a premium for salsa and dealing with staff who treated us like an inconvenience. Here's the part that really takes the cake: the moment we stepped outside, our server and another male server came sprinting out within five seconds to confront us. The same urgency that was completely absent for the 30+ minutes we sat ignored inside suddenly materialized the moment we walked out. If even a fraction of that energy had been directed toward checking on us, even a simple "I'm so sorry for the wait, let me look into that," we would have stayed. That's genuinely all it would have taken. We can't even tell you if the food was good because we left it untouched. It looked mid. Everything about this place looked mid, felt mid, and was aggressively, expensively mid. Please. Go anywhere else. Literally anywhere. Taco Bell. A vending machine. Anywhere but here. read more
