Cute little restaurant located in Newark, NY. I've only been a couple times. My brother (ugh) used to live in Newark. So some of the times when I go home to NY, we'd go here. My mom and dad love this place. My dad is no longer with us, but this was one of those places he loved going to. They both like the mom and pop type restaurants and for good reasons... They almost always have amazing food, great service, large portions. This places checks all those boxes. Waitress was very nice. Very on top of all her tables. Restaurants could benefit from having more waitresses like the ones at this place. Canal View... so the view is behind the restaurant haha. I posted a pic from the day I was there. The colors were amazing. So Autumn and Winter (if there is snow) would be the best viewing of the canal. Too bad they can't add like a back deck of something for Spring, Summer and Autumn. Eating outside here with that view in the pic..would be incredible. Yes, it's chilly in the Autumn months, but it was like 55 when we were there. Other days there are ways to warm an outdoor patio/deck. One last thing, I really wanted to buy one of their brownies. Priiiiiiceyyyy! Just a heads up. The brownies, pie, cake up front when you check out....ain't cheap haha! I'm sure they're absolutely DELICIOUS! But I opted out of buying one. Maybe next time. Just had dinner at Canal View - we've been going here for years, and I chose to go here for my birthday. Had a fish platter and fish fry - requested salad bar as the side. My husband had a plate of salad and a half cup of soup. I had a plate of salad, then went back up for a small dish with some pasta salad that I didn't want to mix on my plate of greens. We got the check, and were charged for 2 salad bars. We were told " soup wasn't included" (even though we were here a month ago and were not charged for soup), and I was told that only one trip to the salad bar was included - I certainly could have carried both plates in one trip had I known. Our dinners both showed "salad bar" as a side option. It seems to me that this is a very underhanded way to pad their bill. We would have been better off paying for a cup of soup and a bowl of Mac salad if we had been given the choice. After being treated like that, we will not be back. read more

I wrote a review a year ago. I have food allergies and wasn't treated very well. I just want to report that since then we have been back multiple times and have been treated extremely well. The steak I ordered looked like a pork chop, no flavor and no 57 sauce to go with it. The mashed potatoes were supposed to be buttered but I don't know if it was the flimsy steak juices or what. This is definitely not a 12oz steak and is not presentable to a steak eater. What terrible place for out of towners! read more

Typical diner. Decent food. Soso service. Booths are way too small. They crammed them into the facility. The first one we tried was too small for me to fit in. The second one worked but was borderline uncomfortable. The waitress was very nice, but the hostess could learn how to smile and be polite. Smiling is free. Check came too soon, before we could decide on desert, we were there for the birthday of my daughter's partner. I had the fish fry, no complaints. The soup ahead of time was good, too. As of late, it has cost our family $80 plus to go out to eat - no matter where we go. We decided to take our kids to breakfast as a special treat and chose Canal View. The prices were very good, and you get a substantial amount of food for the price. The biggest hit at our table was the Mickey Mouse pancakes with whipped cream and sprinkles. And, might I add, it was HUGE. My 5 and 7-year-old couldn't quite finish all of it. Both my husband and I ordered the Hungryman - 2 eggs, 2 bacon, 2 sausage and 2 pancakes. As I dipped into my pancakes, I couldn't help but take more and more bits; the pancakes were very good! I have no idea how they make them, but WOW. Best diner pancakes I have ever had. My first time here. I ordered a cheeseburger and some cottage cheese (instead of fries). My friend ordered the swiss mushroom burger. My burger was juicy and very good. A different kind of bun that most other places. My friend said her swiss mushroom burger was not only delicious, but HUGE. She had to take some home. She had applesauce in lieu of fries. Both meals came with chips, which was a nice bonus. Service was friendly and helpful. Definitely going again! read more

Let me just start with the staff was incredible. Fried mushrooms were delicious. Had the MINI haddock dinner with the add on salad "bar". The salad bar was very simple and not what I would consider an actual salad bar. I am a huge fan of fish and especially fried fish. Must say the haddock was not as I had expected. Large portions but if its got the intestinal track still there, definitely not a desirable meal. Waitress was very sweet and even offered to make another. Ate there 7/1/24 and had the worst meal I have ever had! Ordered the "Texan" and the roast beef tasted like microwaved 5 day old deli roast beef. Tasted more like the refrigerator it came out of than beef! Also, my wife ordered "the fat boy" and said the coleslaw tasted spoiled and didn't eat it. BUT the one thing that really ticked me off besides an unclean table and never present waitress (to busy talking with her young co worker Brandon-very loud-we heard everything) is the cheeseburger chowder soup was so gross I took one bite and that was it! I was also charged $3.99 for that one bite of Luke warm grease. different girl cashed us out. $40 bucks for 2 sandwiches and 2 drinks and a cup of soup. paid, left, and went down the road to Tom Wahl's. i will never be back here, no one ever asked how our meal or service was, no drink refills, the only thing we saw her for was the over priced bill. I'm not one to not pay for a meal because I know it cost them money, so I paid the over priced bill... but this was the worst diner I have ever been to in my 48 years on this planet! Skip this place and literally go anywhere else for food! Gas station deli sandwiches taste better!! Went there for breakfast ordered a 3 egg cheese omelette with hash browns. What I received was 3 eggs cooked on the flat top and a quarter pound of cheese grated over them that dose not make an omelette that's not all the hash browns were a thin layer of hash brown potatoes so thin and so over cooked that it was more of a potato chip then hash browns. When I complained the waitress told me there was nothing he could do about it so I asked for the owner and was told that the owner is not there which explains the meal. So another words their answer to bad food and bad service is tough. My advice before you order is ask to make sure the owner is there otherwise the kitchen will take every shortcut they can. read more

My husband and I usually love coming here but caught them on a super busy morning which resulted in us being forgotten about and left unsatisfied. My trip to the Canal View was average. The service was great and the restaurant was clean. But the food really left something to be desired. I got the roast beef dinner and a large portion of the beef was fat, and there was a kind of skin under the mashed potatoes. If you need to stop somewhere to sit down for warm food there are definitely worse options, but it won't be my first choice anytime soon. read more

This evening as we were debating on when to go for dinner my better half suggested we go someplace we have never been. So we settled on the Canal View. Boy are we glad we did. A classic mom and pops place. Good prices and decent portions. The staff make the place worth coming back. Sam (waitress) js a hard worker. She's super sweet and prompt. Knows my parent's likes and dislikes. She even goes above and beyond by making my mother homemade tartar sauce because she doesn't care for the prepackaged ones they usually serve. Been here many times years ago. Back last night. I had a 3D turkey and bacon club sandwich and it was really good. Also had the salad bar which is nothing special. It had clam chowder soup that looked old and dry so I didn't even try it. My son ordered a crispy chicken wrap that he said was really good. It's a typical diner restaurant. The service is always friendly from what I have seen. I have been there a few times with my family and that includes small children and they have been quite accommodating to them. The food is decent quality since it is a diner you can't expect top notch food.
