My boyfriend and I go to Jay's often, and always we have great service. The food is always very delicious each time we go, I don't think we've ever had an issue. I think a lot of people doing these reviews say the servers have attitude when they really don't- if they're busy you shouldn't be taking all day to order. Been going there for decades. Probably not any longer. No longer the same quality. Got a meatloaf sandwich - meatloaf had a ring of congealed fat around it, gravy tasted burnt, and whatever the brand of fries had a weird coating that maybe helped the crunch a tiny bit but was otherwise just plain bad. A very, very basic diner lunch that just wasn't fit to serve. read more

This place has obviously seen better days. We are new to the Rochester area and love diners. Decided to go here instead of the Highland Park diner, which is closed for the holidays. I ordered a simple breakfast: 2 eggs, has browns, and pancakes. The eggs were ok, but the "hash browns" were obviously store bought and deep fried, in grease that tasted like it hadn't been changed since 1977. The pancakes were dry and gritty, with a vegetable oil based butter substitute to put on the pancakes. The syrup came out of a plastic bottle that's mainly used for ketchup and mustard. The atmosphere is definitely low key, with regulars that seem "interesting". As I sat eating my meal, a kitchen worker came out and cackled at me as he walked past, adding to the strange atmosphere. I might be a diner snob, but the experience here was a huge disappointment. It's kind of hard to mess up a basic breakfast. I kept thinking of what Gordon Ramsey would say about this place. Not going back unless he comes here to fix it up. One positive: my waitress (Nicole) was great. read more

A friend and went here for dinner last night. I hadn't been to Jay's in years. The service is the only thing I could honestly compliment. We were seated and Rutheve was our server. She was great. I ordered a Greek salad with steak done medium rare. I could barely chew the "steak" it was thin and leathery like rawhide. The server even noticed and offered to replace it with chicken. One bite and anyone could tell that was some random frozen piece of something. The Naan bread was okay and I found it odd that we were asked if we wanted free refills on our drinks... and then told they were in fact, not free. The ambiance is your typical diner style place, but it didn't appear clean and I'm not so sure I would return for a dinner service. read more

I have been to Jay's Diner a few times in the past. We were greeted and seated quickly. Our waitress was very nice and took our order immediately. My husband ordered four eggs, had browns and sausage, and I had the pecan waffle. The food was hot when delivered, but my husband said his eggs were scrambled hard, but he ate them anyway. My pecan waffle was nice and light and loaded with pecans. I was somewhat disappointed in the coffee as it was very watered down, barely any coffee taste! Just a side note. ..the restrooms were not very clean, and the waitresses were spraying cleaning solutions on surrounding tables while customers were eating! ‍ Can I suggest they spray the cloth in the back and then wipe down the tables? read more

Such a great dinner! The last time I came here I was in college and it brought back all of those fun memories. They seated our group quickly and the staff was super friendly and fast with their service !! I ordered the Veggie Omelette with Hash Brown, and a side of bacon with whole wheat toast. Have given jays a few tries over the past few years. We do this when literally NOTHING else is open because all the other diners now close at 2pm since COVID. Well pretty much done. Had a simple breakfast. Eggs toast bacon home fries toast, coffee. Waitress was surly and aggressive. Forgot my bacon. Dropped our food off and never came back. I asked for refill on coffee and when it never came I got up and walked up to the cashier and asked for it. Never in my life did I have to ask for coffee refill at a diner. They usually go around with the pot giving refills. I'll stick with our favorite diners that do it much much better! Bob's Diner is cheaper and much better food!! And friendly staff! Although the place was packed when we arrived the food was basic. There was a slight wait to get a table and service was quick. However our server was stretched so thin she could not really provide decent service. It's unfair to her but she was trying her best. We opted for brunch and could have cooked it at home. The menu is not creative so it's an average place for a quick meal. The coffee is not good - sorry. The place is rundown and needs updating badly. We have been to many diners and their desert options is dismal. In my experience walking into a diner you are greeted with a plethora of sweet treats - not this time. I will not come back. I'm not a food snob. But some food is just not good. The Greek omelet wasn't seasoned and didn't have enough eggs (a big problem in the omelet world). The blueberry cream cheese was noticeably on super cheap, dry, white sandwich bread, and had cold brick cream cheese slapped inside with blueberry pie filling poured on top. The price of $11 for a few pieces was steep if this is the expected quality. The place was empty, but the waitress was rude and when two young teen girls came in, clearly enjoying a special occasion late-night together, dropped off by their parents, and paying with their own savings. The waitress gave them a hard time about splitting a plate and was rude when telling them about the "split-plate charge". I think she should have waved the charge altogether, (it's a stupid charge and they were pooling their cash savings on the table to meet the meal price anyway) but, nonetheless she could have at least politely explained the rule. read more

They even had the little jukeboxes at the table (though they're not working at the moment ) I had an amazing ham & cheese melt and my mom had an omelette. And of course, the coffee kept pouring! Despite being a small storefront near a Vons parkinglot off of Scripts Ranch Parkway, it has a large interior and patio with plants hanging down to create some privacy. Despite a busy line, it moved fast and I only waited 5 minutes. I sat outside where there is outside heating if it is chilly. I ordered a turkey sausage scramble with a side of potatoes, biscuit, and a hot green tea. The food was delivered promptly by the server, and they asked to confirm my order was correct. The eggs and vegetables were cooked perfectly and the biscuit was very moist and tasted homemade as they claimed! When I got a to-go box (since it was too much food to eat all at once!) and saw it was a little dirty, they immediately replaced it with a clean one without hesitation. The employees seem happy and are very respectful. During my meal, 3 different servers checked on how I was doing! Overall, I would definitly go back to Jay's Diner to try other options on their menu! read more

Jay's Diner is a Rochester institution and a favorite of mine for breakfast. I visited with family today and they were easily able to accommodate our party of 11. I got a bacon and cheese omelette with home fries and a short stack of chocolate chip pancakes. The omelette was amazing--it's hard to mess up an omelette, but believe me, I've been to places that mess them up. Diners rarely do, though. The one at Jay's had tons of bacon and was perfectly cooked. The pancakes were also super chocolatey! Service was attentive and friendly and we all got our orders pretty quickly. Whenever I see "Fresh Turkey" on the menu I feel like one, when would a person want to order anything but "fresh" Turkey? What was missing though was the carved or home cooked...fresh from the deli- yes. Not fresh from their oven. I ordered one of the specials which was a toasted bagel with "fresh Turkey" sandwich and a cup of soup. I really look forward to enjoying REAL Turkey and not processed deli meat- this was not the case, it was deli meat and unfortunately, not that "fresh" tasting. The soup was good. I ended up just eating the toasted bagel without the sandwich fillings and the cup of soup. Maybe being it's a diner the breakfast items would have been a better option.... I often frequent fine establishments, but sometimes prefer questionable joints. Diners don't fall in either category, and maybe that's why I have a special love for them. Jay's is a retro-themed diner that my brother brought my family and me to for dinner. The service was great and the food was good, nothing extraordinary, but adequate for a quick, predictable meal. We ordered the chicken souvlaki (5/5 outstanding taste, big portion, great side salad), the Philly cheesesteak (3/5 meh), the breaded chicken sandwich (3/5 standard taste, solid portion), and mashed potatoes (4/5 just the right amount of butter, and a big portion). Also got a round of teas, but turned out all they had was Lipton. So food was above average, and service and 24/7 convenience bumps it to a 4-star diner experience. Forgot this place existed, sadly! Stopped in for lunch yesterday. The waitress was super friendly, and the food came shockingly fast! I had a hot turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes, and it was absolutely deliciously fantastic! The gravy was beyond superb. The turkey was moist, sitting inside two fluffy pillows of whatever bread they're using. I'm sure that's why I was treated the way I was this eve. I thought they were back to 24 hours or I would have never popped in at 9:45 pm. I typically have breakfast there. Never a problem. My experience tonight: I was rushed to a seat (mind you, there are ten people eating). Female server with dark braided ponytail took my order. I ordered the gyro salad - - which was excellent (see pic). I highly recommend. I asked for extra taziki (sp?) sauce. I was met with a snarky "I'll ask." I'll ask? Hell - charge me extra and bring me the f'ing extra sauce, without the attitude. I'll ask??? The salad came quick. I rushed eating due to the entire female waitstaff looking like they wanted to Jill themselves (staring at me) because I clearly annoyed them with my 9:45 pm arrival. W. T. F? Inhaled my meal and then tried to hand another rude server my credit card on the side of the counter, to pay. I was met with a terse "you're not allowed back here.!!!" Again, wtf??? I tried handing it to her from the side of the counter (I DID NOT GO BEHIND THE COUNTER) so the kitchen crew could mop the floor in FRONT of the cash register. I was being KIND as not wanting to dirty the floor. I apologized for arriving late. Met with silence. FU chica. Remember kindness ladies?
