Do not make the mistake I did by getting the carne asada plate!! For the life of me, I don't know what kind of lowest grade sh*t steak that was. It was about 1/4 of an inch thick, tons of fat, and was actually white inside like pork?! Super weird and low quality. Our group was looking for a place for dinner after a conference and decided to try Cancun based on the yelp review. This is one of the few times that yelp has steered me wrong. While not a terrible experience by any means, other reviews gave me a higher expectation. The restaurant has a fun vibe, brightly painted chairs and painted wooden designs under the glass of the table. Our server was friendly and took the time to respond to our questions and to check in once we had started our meal. I would give the server four stars. The food came out quickly. We all ordered various combination plates with basic items such as burritos, tacos, enchiladas, rice and beans. The plate comes with exactly what items are ordered, no side salad or garnish. The food was your average Tex Mex, this is not authentic Mexican food. There was flavor but no spice at all, which I think the food would have benefited from. I thought the chicken was better then the ground beef. The higher points of the meal were the tortilla chips that were still a bit warm and the margaritas. The Cancun in Okemos is great but the new one in Williamston, not so much. No offer to refill chips, no checking to see if meal was okay, had to walk up to register and ask for bill and take out container as staff was too busy chatting and playing with their phones. Definitely not the Cancun experience we have come to expect. We will return to the Okemos location even though the Williamston one is just blocks from us. Best Mexican food in this area. I love the staff- they are quick, friendly, and always make me laugh and have a good time. Food comes out without skipping a beat. It's beautiful on the inside and you can't go wrong. Tamales were amazing and they have the best quezon you will ever have. Even getting food delivered was a good experience. I've been going for over 10 years and it's by far the best Mexican restaurant in the area. We start off with the house salsa and queso. I either get the Tacos de Carne Asada or the Chimichanga Mexicana, worth every bite! Service is super speedy and extra friendly, I've never had to wait in line to be seated. If you get a dish to go, no matter the size, they will pack your order with extra salsa and chips. Ask for a takeout box to get your salsa to go, they are happy to oblige. No lunch menu on Sunday, so expect to only order off the dinner menu. read more

Cancun is as good as it gets when it comes to enjoying authentic Mexican cuisine at an affordable price in an enjoyable and fun atmosphere. I was introduced to Cancun by my in-laws (at the time they introduced me, they were just my college girlfriend's parents). Given it's close proximity to East Lansing, they viewed this as a neighborhood gem, but I found this to be an exciting new place to bring my college friends for a meal, a margarita, or both. Anyway, over the past 5 years, I've been here countless times. Portions are large and service is superb. They do a fun little surprise for birthday guests and all the servers love making the tables they serve laugh. Pro-tip: if you're a fan of chicken, get the IS Special. Easily the worst "Mexican" food I have ever had. Just because the owners and cooks are Mexican, doesn't mean the food is good, or even Mexican The elephant in the room is the use of processed American cheese. it's not something I ever eat and it was absolutely disgusting in enchiladas. Why no cotija, or at least real monterey jack? Food was microwaved. Watered down margaritas. People who say this is authentic have obviously never eaten in Mexico, or even in Texas or California. If you're used to eating frozen prepared food, you might not mind this. On the plus side, service was good. Quick, because everything is microwaved. read more

A great authentic Mexican restaurant. I'm not from the Lansing/Okemos area, but I come here enough to be able to enjoy such atmospheres. I had 2 soft shell tacos, which were awesome. The staff was kind, and very friendly. They brought out chips and salsa, which was also very good. We have a similar place back where I live, and this definitely rivals it in terms of good food, and authenticity. Come here if you can because you won't regret that decision at all! read more

Our family of 4 adults stopped in today and were glad we did. We had been to a book signing nearby and picked this place as we all wanted Mexican and this was just down the road. Three of us ordered the chimichanga platter, 2 pork, 1 beef. Each came with refried beans and rice. Every thing came out hot, fast, and as ordered. The other person in our party had pork tacos. She got 3 but could only eat two. Also, margaritas were ordered and those who ordered said they were great. I have eaten here twice so far and it is has not disappointed I have had a dish called Alambres, grilled steak topped with bacon and cheese, throw it on a tortilla shell and you got dinner. My family and I were not fans of Mexican food... until we tried Cancun Mexican Grill. It was love at the first bite. This restaurant suddenly turned into my favorite place when I'm happy, and my favorite place when I'm depressed, and my favorite place all the excuses in between. We keep very warm memories of its sampler, but it tastes better fresh. Two orders were always more than abundant to feed us all four of us, and a fight over the last crumbs. I can't use words to define the quality of the food, because my knowledge of the English language is not that abundant and colorful as their sampler. We went to the Cancun in Grand Ledge, but this one in Okemos is by very far the best of both restaurants regarding abundance, flavor and service. Jen and I have started to "Yelplog" local restaurants lately, trying out new place to eat weekly so that I can have some new reviews to write. This week's pick was Cancun Mexican Grill in Okemos. Tipped off by a mutual lover of Mexican fare, Jen and I skipped Chipotle hell in favour of real-deal Mexican. When we got into the parking lot of this strip mall in Okemos, we knew we were in for a treat. You could smell the carne asada from the parking lot. Once we got in, the place was packed, and it was obvious as to why. We were seated and greeted with chips and spicy salsa and ordered up two taco plates with beans and rice. The beans and rice were very flavourful as were the tacos. The only "complaints" I would have is that the chips and taco shells aren't authentic fried corn shells and that the tacos don't come with tomatoes. The latter wasn't so bad, I just spooned some hot salsa on and was good to go. Cancun is definitely worthy of a return visit and may even beat out Aldaco's for me, but that's simply because of location. read more

Cancun is probably my second favorite Mexican place in the Lansing area. The decor is wonderful, love all the colors and pictures. The food is probably 3 out of 5 stars. I felt the Taco meat was a bit dry, but it had decent flavor so that made up for it. Salsa was decent, I've had better but it was really not bad. All in all a pretty good dining experience. As a California native, I'm use to being able to getting GREAT Mexican food at a stone's throw. It's taken me and my husband a few months, but we've finally found our "go to" Mexican joint! It wasn't very easy to find at first since it is located at the back of a strip mall, but once we arrived, it was nice to see that the management has brought a little TJ to Okemos! The service was prompt (chips and salsa arrived as soon as we sat down), the horchata (yummy, yummy coconut water - be brave and try it...it is delicious) was plentiful and then we ordered our food. I got the carnitas platter, while hubby got the carne asada. Both dishes came with ample rice, guacomole and tortillas. My carnitas were perfectly done - seasoned well, and cooked long enough so that the meat was easily shredded with just a fork. My hubby's carne asada was good - definitely could've used less fat on the side but that easily saved by cutting it off. The salsa is a tad watery but loved the fact that they roasted the tomatoes. The chips were fresh out of the fryer, thin and crispy. We noticed that there are a lot of veggie options as well (which in this area is a major plus!). I thought the staff was great - attentive and nice...maybe because both me and the hubby spoke in Spanish but nonetheless, all were very nice. read more

Food was absolutely disgusting, I had 3 pieces of hair between the chips and salsa, and my food. Food came out in less then five minutes and was just thrown on a plate like someone s*** on the plate and sprinkled some of their hair on it and was like "there's their meal." We eat a lot of sub par food so take it from someone who knows what decent food and good food are.... this food was some of the worst I've ever had. Save your money and go to Qdoba or even Taco Bell and it will probably be better. read more

I'm going to give this place a 5 for food and a 2 for service. This is also my favorite Mexican Restaurant in the East Lansing/Okemos area. Their chicken taquitos and chicken tacos are amazing. Normally I don't even like chicken but how they prep it makes it a winner in my book. I've been there on a busy night and been unable to get the waiters attention for drink refills or any other reason. I'd understand if they were running around trying to keep up with the traffic but usually they are all standing around chatting. Even on a night that isn't busy you'll see your waiter to take your order, deliver your food, and give you the check. Don't stop here if you want to get in and out quick. Normally I wouldn't go back to a restaurant with service like this, but the food is so good I'm back at least once every couple of months and I have to drive over 30 minutes to get there. read more

Restaurant is normally clean and well-kept, although if you go late-night in the hour before they close it seems like they cut back on the sweeping and busing of the tables, but definitely nothing to be concerned about. Only reason they don't get 5 stars - on occasion I get terrible service. I keep going back because the food is worth it, and it is just a single person who seems unable to ever remember to bring me a drink, chips and salsa, or do pretty much anything but take my order (she doesn't even bring the order out after, just takes it initially and someone else brings it to me). Seems to be about a 1 in 10 chance of getting this particular person as your waitress, so it is worth the risk! read more

Stopped here again after visiting friends in the Lansing area. It's a beautifully decorated restaurant with brightly painted table, chairs and murals. The menu is still a little overwhelming with too many choices. We shared an onion cheese dip appetizer which was wonderful but not as cheesy as my last visit. It was more of a chorizo sausage appetizer with a little cheese (at least it wasn't American cheese). Salsa was very good and zippy for regular salsa. Cancun is the most amazing restaurant on the planet. I have yet to find a Mexican restaurant at this level of amazingness. Let's start with the margs. Fantastic. Just fantastic. They're really big and perfectly blended. The salsa is really fresh and is in constant supply. As for food. The IS special or the chimichanga are my go to. I cannot stress enough, the cheese sauce was created by God and transported to this small Mexican restaurant in mid Michigan, just to confirm that God is real. These feelings are not just my own.
