Yes Henry's Place is in a strip mall and is a locals type place. We found it to be welcoming spot to eat, drink and be merry! We sat at the bar but there are many tables for dining. Our bartender did his best to keep our drinks full and helped us with our food order. We had a shrimp and fries basket and a smash burger. Both items were very good and fresh. Don't let the idea of this place being in a shopping plaza stop you from eating here. The staff was super friendly when we walked in. Server greeted us quickly. Drink orders went in fast. Full bar and a ton of options on tap. The menu has lots of good options. The cubano sandwich was excellent as was the Cajun fries. They also had prime rib on the menu for sat night after 4. Can't wait to stop here again. They have TVs around the outside wall playing sports while keeping the noise levels reasonable. There is seating for 4 to seating for 6. I sit at the bar regularly. It's a nice locals bar. Great happy hour menu. I've had great service from Rob, Henry, and Jimmy.

I understand the community really likes Henry, but the service is slow and the bartender pours a terrible beer with a head of foam that is unacceptable. The smell of the establishment is musty and dirty. My server's hands were dirty and I watched her not bother to wash them after picking up dirty dishes, handle money, etc. Provide better service and basic cleanliness. read more

Henry's Place - it was our first time here, and we'd heard about the prime rib, so I decided to order that. It was perfectly tender and seasoned, with a subtle au jus that took it up a notch. The Greek fries were a unique and perfect pairing. My wife's salmon, while simple on flavor (emphasis on the salmon, with some salt and light seasoning), was perfectly grilled. The Brussels were a bit more balsamic flavored than we prefer, but had great crispy texture. The Canadian oysters were super fresh and small, which I prefer for ease of eating / texture. The restaurant was busy, and we didn't get any silverware until our dinner came, which meant we had to eat out salads and dinner at the same time, but the service was excellent and quick overall, and we were more than happy to give a pass given the very busy Valentine's Day weekend. Who knew this place was here...I certainly didn't when i was searching for a place to grab a bite to eat. Its a small, quaint atmosphere with plenty of East Lansing charm. The staff was friendly and helpful. The smash burger I had was just average, but the oysters were a hit. I'd definitely stop back to try more items on the menu or grab some drinks. We were out of town and this ended up being our second choice after the place we were going to go to was closed. It ending up being a great choice. The place is definitely a little small and feels like a neighborhood kind of bar. We were there a little late for the lunch rush so there were very few people in the place. Service was great though and the food was all fresh. My biggest piece of advice is to order to the place's strengths. This is northern Michigan so sandwiches, fish and chips, poutine, etc. are good things to order. I'm not sure I would try something off the beaten path like tacos or what not. I got the Shrimp Po Boy and it was fantastic. Great seasoning, crunch, fresh bread, just great. My wife got the fish fry and also loved it. We tried the poutine to just try a classic take and while I don't think either of us would call ourselves poutine lovers moving forward it was still really tasty and nice to try a classic version of it. Our kids are very picky and even they enjoyed their food. They just got cheeseburgers but they were happy. All and all, can't ask for much more. I could see this place being wild in the evenings but for an afternoon lunch it ended up suiting us just fine. read more

Has a rather extensive menu with some interesting items and the food is actually quite good. The hamburgers are very good. It is a custom blend of meat that is actually quite flavorful and properly seasoned. They have poutine on the menu but the poutine does not have any cheese curds in it. Henry's was one of the first places we went to have a beer and some food upon moving to Okemos. It is a standard bar eatery. The service is personable, polite and always entertaining. Their menu holds up, with options for all eaters. They have very tasty food at a respectable price. Don't forget to have some oysters, as they are both tasty and great with a cold beer. The ambience is straight forward and wide open. It's not a quiet place, but it's a good place to meet people and have a transient conversation while enjoying good food and drink. We really like-to-love going to Henry's. The drawback is that it's quite small, but that can also be part of its charm. Had a horrible dinner experience here yesterday. The service was very poor. It was not very busy but somehow we seemed to get the worst service ever. Our waitress hung out with a table of people I'm thinking she knew rather then waiting on the few other tables she had. The other waitress that was not ours was running circles around our waitress and doing a great job. We started with an order of reuben eggrolls that took a very long time before we got them. They were very good and the thousand island dressing was delicious. We also ordered a shrimp poboy which was terrible. It was basically a toasted hamburg bun with 4 fried shrimp. No flavor at all. Could not believe it was $18 for that. It was the size of an appetizer sandwich. We also ordered the lobster roll which was horrible and cost $27. Didn't come with any sides. It was basically a half of a hot dog bun with not very much lobster and it had no seasoning or butter on it. The manager did come to our table and said they had a party going on in back and that's why our appetizer took so long. Also said that we picked the appetizer that takes the longest to prepare. Ok. This is a favorite of mine, whether it's just me, or a couple of friends, or a whole crew. The bourbon list is quite nice. Many high end Scotches too. Wednesday is Wine Day glass or bottle specials. The service is great and the staff is warm and friendly. The food is really good too. Best Poutines in town....Canadian, Pork Belly, Southwest, or Pollos Bacon. Tacos with Mushrooms, Fish, Prime Rib, Chorizo, Pork Belly, Chicken, Shrimp, or Lobster. Hamburgers, sandwiches, and diner entrees round out the menu. There are 30 or so rotating taps for draft beer, many craft beers. Some bottled beer is available too, but the craft beers are tasty and aplenty. 7 large screen TV's round out the entertainment. They have parties in the back room all the time, Trivia Night is popular and has moved to the back room freeing up the restaurant area. Nice background music, not loud or blaring so conversations are easy. All the bar staff are great with recommendations if you need assistance deciding. I went to Henry's twice in one week and both times enjoyed my visit. I can't speak to the alcohol but the food was pretty good. The atmosphere is great. Not big but plenty of space between tables so it didn't feel crowded. Great music in the background. Love the twinkle lights on the ceiling! This feels like a neighborhood pub. There seems to be a room in the back for private events. The staff was very nice. The only docked star is for the food not being amazing but it's pretty good. Be sure to ask the per drink prices on the draft beer selection before ordering. Apparently some of their brews sell for $6 while others are $12 per pint. The woman behind the bar was rude. I ordered 3 whiskeys from the menu and they were out of all 3. So I ordered 3 that I could see on the shelf. When I received them, the female bartender told me "You could have ordered this in a flight." I told her "Well that's a piece of information that would have been useful 10 minutes ago." She responded with "You ordered everything so fast I didn't get a chance." So, I guess according to her, I was in the wrong. She's lucky I didn't walk out then and there. I considered it. For the next couple hours my wife and I sat at the bar, we watched her berate and speak down to her waitstaff and bartenders.
