At the end of 2022 and early 2023 we decided to look at getting a pool. We spoke with the 5 of the…read moremost popular companies in the SW Burbs. Only 1 left that lasting impression on me and my family and that one person was Joe from Mud Turtle. Joe came with his knowledge and answered all of our technical/pool questions but when we invited Joe into our home he wanted to get know my family and that meant something to us. He wasn't just there for sale but truly wanted to get to know us as people and my children. That added a personal touch that we felt was special. At no time was he pushy or attempting to over commit on anything. After spending over an hour with Joe our decision was clear. The owner John came to our house to do a survey and I could just tell this guy knew what he was doing. He explained the terrain we were on, what engineering would say, and what the Village would expect, he was spot on. He made is recommendations and gave his opinion on pool placement, retaining wall, and deck space. After meeting with Joe and John we felt extremely comfortable knowing that we were in good hands and would be well taken care of. Emily drew up a beautiful 3D drawing of our property with the pool, all the features, firepit, patio design etc. I did tinker with the design up to the day we were ready to start construction and the team, especially Emily, was very patient with me as I made some changes throughout and even a few during construction. During the waiting period I would stop in randomly and just hang out in their shop and shoot the sh*t. I'd spend an hour or more at times and the team was always receptive and inviting when I stopped by. I spoke with other customers and listened to stories of previous projects while getting a free education on pool care and pool operation. This just made me feel even more positive in the decision we made as I continued to build rapport with everyone and got to know everyone on a more personal level. Even met some new neighbors from our neighborhood who were also Mud Turtle clients. One thing that really stood out though was the responsiveness of Joe. I'd lay in bed at 8-9pm and send emails with questions not expecting an answer til the morning and within 10 minutes I was getting a response. It was really something special that he would take time from his family to answer some of my, what I thought could've been dumb questions. What was nice is that all the subs from the digger, to the patio guy, to the pool crete guy, to the Mud Turtle field crew, everyone one was super personable and easy to talk to. Not one time did I feel shunned by anyone. Everyone shared in the same vision of providing a beautiful product in a timely manner. One thing that was important to me was knowing the schedule and maybe that's because of my background but John and his field staff/subs kept me up to date almost daily on progress and what was on the schedule in the coming days. These guys worked every day including some Saturdays and even Sunday. In fact John came to home on a Sunday morning at 7am to drop off more material for the crew to wrap up pool crete that day. It was really something special to see the commitment he had to his clients and ensuring the project and progress stayed on track. Now we were quoted 6-8 weeks from start to finish. Mud Turtle substantially completed the entire project in 6 weeks! This included 2000 sq ft of XL pavers, a fire pit and a 18x38 pool, with multiple features. It was really incredible that they completed such a large scale project in 6 weeks! Not only was it done effectively and efficiently but it was beautiful. Everything was perfect. We couldn't be happier with the final product. The lasting impression the Mud Turtle team left on me and my family is second to none. When you're making such a huge investment you want some reassurance that you're making a great decision for yourself, your home, but most importantly your family. That's why this review is important, you can rest assure that the Mud Turtle team will treat you like family and not just another sale.

Dan Maka came by due to a request for some interior remodeling work. It included removing a window…read moreand door in a room and related exterior stairs. While here, he pointed out that they could do repairs on cedar siding, including painting the siding. Rough estimate while onsite was $10 to $12K for the exterior work. A few weeks later I got an estimate typed into an email for ~$12K. There were some inaccuracies in the work he wrote up, including no mention at all of removing one staircase and rebuilding a 2nd exterior staircase. How does something like this get overlooked? I wrote back with some questions, such as does the price include the work on the stairs, what is the warranty for the work, estimated timeframe for completion and questions about the painting subcontractor he plans to use. These are reasonable questions and there are a lot of poor quality, sloppy painters out there, so he should be comfortable answering them. Dan has since disappeared. Since then I talked with siding contractors who told me it's not a good idea to try and replace random cedar siding boards that are warped and brittle. This is because boards adjacent to them can get cracked in the process. Dan talks about having been in the construction industry for 30 years. He told me his background is actually as a plumbing He shouldn't have bothered to come over in the first place if he and doesn't have the knowledge about the work he wants to propose. I think Maka is more about doing Kitchens and Baths remodeling. That's different than doing repairs that relate to a home's construction. And it's interesting that he disappeared when I asked him about warranty and subcontractor information. For all I know, the subcontractor could have bad reviews. But he didn't even give me their name. And why doesn't Dan want to warranty his work? Another thing to be aware of is when first calling Maka, Brian, who works in the office, told me for $199 they'll do computerized design of the project, basically something similar to blueprints. He said you can have that even if you don't hire them to do the work. I brought this up to Dan when he first came over and he said "the $199 is my fee for coming over, I wasn't getting paid before I started charging that." So, two different stories on the $199. So, Dan got paid $199 for coming over and disappearing without providing a thorough estimate. I feel ripped off. Consider Smardbuild.

We owe a MASSIVE THANK YOU and SPECIAL shoutout to Dan Maka and the entire Maka Homes team for their exceptional work on the remodel - from demo to electrical to backsplash, cabinets, etc., they truly went above and beyond. The Maka team was easy to work with and I LOVED their Buildertrend construction management software schedule. I could see in real-time where the project stood and they always alerted me the night before when the team would be here next and at what time. The work they performed was BEAUTIFUL and we LOVE everything. Dan made several suggestions that I have to admit I was worried about, but he was RIGHT, every time! We are so grateful for the dedication and skill of each of these amazing professionals! High-recommend!!!!!
