Every trip to SF means a trip to the Wharf and a trip to Candy Baron. I love salt water taffy so my bucket gets filled rather quickly. I love trying the combinations on taffy flavors. The store is very crowded with people and merchandise so be careful, you don't want to end up in a barrel of candy, or do you? :) I can't say much for the staff because they are usually behind the counter ringing people up. I enjoy the selection of non taffy candies, gum, lollipops, as well. Many candies from the past which bring back childhood memories. A lot of humorous and off the wall type candies that make unique gifts for the folks back home who are watering your plants and feeding your fish while you are away. read more

For anyone that does not know me, I am a huge candy fan! This place made me feel like a lost kid in the mall. I was so amazed at the huge selection of taffy. They had so many options to choose from; it ranged from chili lime to strawberry cheesecake. I was sold when I saw these two flavors. The one thing I did notice about this candy store was the size of it! It seemed like customers had to move single file to move around and look at all the candy selection. It was a hassle when I wanted to go back and look at the taffy selection. Since it is a self serve store, I did not expect much from the workers. They did what they had to do and we left as satisfied kids with a huge bag of candy. In addition, the price was not that bad either. Saltwater Taffy is my weakness. I always have to buy it if I see it. This store has a ton of taffy flavors to choose from. The last time I was here, I had to buy a few pieces of every flavor. It is kinda pricey though at around $5 for a HALF pound. I paid a little over $10 for a little less than a pound of taffy. Yikes major tourist trap! But it was worth it though. Some of my favorite flavors include peanut butter and jelly, candy apple, peppermint, and hot chocolate. This review isn't about my experience but I witnessed the employee at the door be totally rude to the young woman in front of me. She was wearing gloves because it was cold and the employee holds the sanitizer pump out and she kindly declines. He VERY RUDELY yelled "No! Take your gloves off! And use the hand sanitizer!" Like, dude if you hate your job that much just quit already. There's a way to talk to people nicely and politely. After that I entered the store and wasn't that impressed. It has all your typical candy you'd find at grocery stores just so much more expensive. The employees at the register were just as miserable though, no hi or nothing. O Bitter Disappointment! Thy alias is Candy Baron. Though the store bursts temptingly with barrel upon barrel of soft taffy, their taste falls flat on its rainbow face. My candyfiend friend loaded up a bag of stickies in a kaleidoscope array of flavors -- coconut, root beer float, chocolate chip cookie, cherry coke, you get the idea. He dropped almost $15 (yes, he got a little carried away) only be taunted by bland and impotent non-treats. I chomped a red specimen that could as easily been bacon or paper towel-flavored as much as it was distinguishably cherry -- the top note was of wax lips. I find myself on Pier 39 quite often as being a tourist is sometimes part of my job. I tell travelers where to go and what to see all day long. And most of them come into town already wanting to visit Pier 39. Don't hate me for sending them there! The guide books mention it as a not-to-be-missed attraction. I know. Crazy. So instead of dreading going there with them, i see the positive side of it. I'll have a great view of the bay. I'll play skee-ball at the arcade. I'll buy a bag of taffy at Candy Baron. Yummm. I always stop by the candy store. They have so many different kinds of taffy it's like the candy castle. I stroll throughout the store slowly, looking at all the delicious flavors. I personally love anything caramel. They also have sugar free taffy, for the health conscious peeps, but that's crazy talk. The other thing I love is their old school sweets. They have Buttons Candies, the Sugar Daddy one, the original French Taffy, the Bazooka, the Fun Dips... power to the 80s! So I always leave with a big bag of candy. And a mouth full of taffy. My parents were in town, and we thought we'd play tourists and head to Pier 39 last Friday, 2/6/2009. After being to so many candy places lately, I wasn't all that impressed by Candy Baron. It was swarming with tourists (yeah, I know that we were tourists, too....), which made it difficult to maneuver around the space. Also, once you've seen barrels of taffy in other sweet shops, it becomes boring to see the same set-up everywhere. They did have a decent selection of flavors, but it was difficult to find my favorites (vanilla, peanut butter, etc.) I got some Caramel Creams (Bulls-Eyes) and a couple pieces of vanilla taffy. The staff seemed friendly, but I didn't interact with them all that much since my dad (you know, the dentist) treated. Next time I'm in the area, I'll probably skip it. read more

The first time I went here a few years ago I really liked it. I bought some novelty candy mints in cool little tins. Most things are piled on top of wooden barrels. I came here again recently with a friend who I was showing around town. Perty expensive. The selection seemed lacking to me. (But they did have a lot of great flavors of SALTWATER TAFFY and other classics-gummies, sweets&sours...) I wish there were more unique, exciting candies that would make me feel like a "kid in a candy store." (The candy shop in the beginning of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.) Salt water taffy - one of the must haves when you are in San Fran. They have amazing and inventive flavours, and the taffy is soft as heck. This huge candy store in Pier 39 has a ton of different flavours - I wasn't a huge fan of the wacky ones (maple bacon, chicken and waffles), or the really boring flavours (chocolate), but really liked the in-between flavours -- peanut butter, cantaloupe, buttered popcorn! They also have some Goetze's candy I've never seen, like strawberry, and they are my FAVOURITE when in the US. Place gets busy but line moves fast. read more

The Candy Baron is located at the end of Pier 39. This store is the mecca for a diabetic coma or a fat kid's wet dream. I saw this store and I knew I had to head in. Upon entry I saw salt water taffy flavors that I never heard of that included: apple pie, buttered popcorn, chili mango, chocolate chip cookie dough, hot chocolate, etc. I grabbed a plastic bag and immediately started to throw in tons of different flavors for gluttony. I didn't get a chance to check out the other candies but I did see chocolate bars, gummies, classic oldies buy goodies candy (root beer barrels, airheads, necco wafers, cow tails, etc) etc. I thought my bag was a little pricey but I figured because of the area and also the fact I found flavors I couldn't find anywhere else it was worth it. read more

Very interesting collection of candy. I loved just walking around and taking in the huge amount of candy. Great to take kids to, or just someone with a sweet tooth (which is definitely me). Couldn't help but purchase a bag of taffy of all the different kinds of flavors. Watermelon is my favorite! It is a bit overpriced but it's a touristy area and it's a specialty store. 5 stars for selection. They have all the English and Australian candy I love here. I always come to stock up here when I'm in San Fran. 3 stars for price. The candy bars are pretty expensive. A kitkat was 2 something! And it wasn't even a special kitkat! I mean, I know you need to mark it up but damn... 3 stars for service. Score! Bit O' Honey! Barrels of individually wrapped candy pieces makes you feel as if everyday was a Halloween celebration. It's not cheap, costing about $5 for approx 1/2 lb of sweets. Yikes! They've got a nice section of sugarfree candy including the Atkinson's peanut butter crunchy bars (think Butterfinger), Brach's Sundaes Neopolitan Coconut chews, and sesame crunches. The two young men working the counter were not the friendliest and one had to pause to think for a second before thanking me for the purchase. Lots of taffy for taffy lovers. As for Bit O' Honey? Candy Baron is always a temptation anytime I'm at Fisherman's Wharf- its hard to resist all those barrels of salt water taffy. The taffy is quite good, plus it was just fun to try all the different flavors, whether it was key lime, strawberry, huckleberry, passionfruit, or banana creme pie. Candy Baron also has a good selection of hard-to-find candies like Abba Zabba and Aero chocolate bars as well as quite a large selection of sugar-free hard candies and salt water taffy. Its always good when you can leave a candy store with treats for yourself as well as your diabetic family member. Everytime I visit Pier 39 I must come to this store! The salt water taffy is what I come for. Im eating a piece of cherry taffy as Im writing this review. Its about $4.59/lb for candy. I typically throw in 3 types of each taffy flavor that appeals to me. After I throw in all the taffy I forget what flavor is what. Too bad they dont have a guide with picks to remind of you of the flavor of the taffy, like they do with Jelly Belly Jellybeans. It only appears that the candy is filled with candy from the bottom to top but if you find a barrel that has candy just about gone, youll see the secret. The 2 goofy dudes working behind the register looked like they were having too much fun among themselves (probably making fun of tourists) This candy store is a must stop when in SF, great salt water taffy. When buying salt water taffy be sure to give the candy a gentle squeeze if its soft its fresh, if not...well its not. read more

I had the sudden random urge for saltwater taffy while on Pier 39 so, my friend looked up on her phone the nearest place to get some. After getting lost (as much as one can) on the pier because Google maps did not have the address current. Go figure. Overall they had what I came for, which was taffy. What they did not seem to have was clearly marked prices on said taffy. I just grabbed a pre-packed box, waited in line to find out prices and just got that box. All in all a good product, however if you are willing to walk a few blocks away from the pier, you can definitely save yourself a few dollars per pound on taffy if you look. read more

They offer a variety of taffy so if you are looking for those specifically, you may want to check this place out. I picked up some taffy but I thought they were just okay. I arrived at 7:50pm to pick up ONE item. The website said that this location was open until 9pm. When I got to the store and there was already a store employee standing at the front door waiting for people to exit so that they could close the store for the night. The website said that this location is open until 9pm! Don't waste your time or your money here! Obviously, management could care less that this store closes earlier than what's posted online. Candy, candy and MORE CANDY! I'm sorry...I think I'm still on a bit of a sugar high from my last visit to the Candy Baron at Fisherman's Wharf. From their awesome variety of old fashion, novelty items and standard candies (like Skittles and Hershey bars) to their good service...this candy store gets two thumbs up by me. My mom and I found ourselves in amazement when we first walked through the doors...then I found myself taking pictures for a few reasons. Mostly because I wanted to remember certain items to buy in the future. Especially novelty ones for bachelorette parties. Fun! Ok...it's a tad expensive (roughly about $5/box), but c'mon...this isn't an everyday purchase. Also...there's no sign that says you have to go crazy and spend a $100 every time you visit. You'll probably want to though. :) It's also a bit cramped in the store because of the amount of candy is available. SO MUCH! Overall...I think it's time for you to indulge in some sweets and this is the perfect place to go. read more

This place is nice to visit. They have a great variety of old fashion candy, novelty candy items and regular stuff. This place is a little expensive. Anything in a box regardless of what is it, or size is at least $4.99. Also, there are always at least 3 people behind at the register counter, but they only have one register open..Never makes any sense. I have been here a few times, and the people are socializing until the line gets to 4-5 people long before opening another register. read more

What do you want for a candy shop stuck in the middle of a tourist trap? They have lots and lots of candy. Tons of taffy. A lot of the kitschy, novelty, old timey, rare candies...but of course, they don't have Wal-mart prices. I like the variety. I don't like the crowd. Every time I go to Pier 39 I stop at Candy Baron and buy a bag of saltwater taffy. They have over 30 different flavors of saltwater taffy and it's located conveniently on the Pier, right around the corner from the sea lions. After you buy your saltwater taffy, you can hope that eating it will distract you from the loads of tourists and the disgusting smells and sounds of the sea lions. Candy Baron is one of the few reasons I still venture to Pier 39 even though I feel as though I should be wearing a "I *heart* SF shirt," snapping away at Alcatraz or the golden gate bridge and munching clam chowder in a bread bowl. The only problem is that the taffy is kind of expensive, but that's the price you pay for being at a tourist attraction. And be sure to hide the taffy in your purse or bag, or you can guarantee that it will be eaten by the time you get home! read more
