Very good service. They totally transformed Molly from a nasty mess into a cute little Snorky. Molly was looking so bad - her coat was so overgrown and she stunk. I could barely stand to be around her. So, I dropped her off at Canine Design. Gave Doreen all the special instructions - that she needs special, gentle care, that she hates to have her paws and face touched, that she can be difficult when stressed - snappy - even aggressive. Picked her up a few hours later totally transformed - sweet smelling - even a hint of a smile. Certainly glad to be back in my car heading home. I have a high-energy rescue pup that can be pretty anxious with new people, so I am always worried about taking him to new places. But I am so impressed with how patient and professional the staff at Canine Design were with my dog! We brought Simba in for a bath, nail trim, and ear cleaning. The appointment was about 2.5 hours, and they gave us a call 15 mins before he was done. He came out looking calm and happy, with a very cute blue bandana. Lots of places upcharge for certain dog breeds and anxious temperaments, and they didn't do that here which I really appreciated. Very reasonable prices and great staff- we will be back! read more

Such a great place, super affordable and super nice cut on my young doodle puppy. The only reason it's not five stars is that it can get busy and your dog may be waiting to get groomed in a crate for a while. Our dog is pretty chill and always comes jumping out looking happy and loving her cut. A more anxious dog might not do great in this setting an might do better with a groomer that can ensure your pup is in and out in a specific amount of time. We used Canine Design for our 10 month old Bernese Mountain Dog. His hair cut looked very good and he smelled great. Our only issue with this place is when we called, we were told to drop the dog off between 9-10am. We dropped him off at 9:00am and they took him in. We waited a while for phone call to pick him up, but it was 1:00pm and I hadn't heard, so I decided to give them a call. I was told that he was next in line to get groomed...and it would be another hour or so and they would give me a call back. I was concerned since this means my dog had been in a crate all this time!!! He has never been in a crate and I am sure was very stressed. I wish they would have just had a time slot where we could drop him off at the time of service instead of this long wait. He came home and wasn't very happy and went right to sleep. This wait in a crate alone is not for our pup. Hopefully they open time slots in the future since they do good work. read more

The owner was amazing and let me bring my dog back after she was not shaved short enough. The groomer did a very poor job. There were random tufts of hair all over and her head is poofy like a lion mane. I would give it a chance but ask for an experienced groomer. Took my white German Shepherd here after he had too much fun in the rain and mud and he looked absolutely FANTASTIC after he was done. On June 26, 2024 I took my happy, healthy 8-year old pomeranian Bella in to be groomed. About 4 hours later I was called to say she was ready to be picked up. 5 minutes later they called and said she was having difficulty breathing. I immediately went to pick her up. She was in a horrible condition. Her tongue was purple, she was panting profusely and salivating everywhere. I rushed her to the veterinarian who treated her for heat stroke and respiratory distress. Her temperature was 107.8. The vet advised me to take her to the emergency animal hospital for follow-up care. She was in the emergency hospital for 3 days, suffered greatly, and my beloved Bella died on June 29, 2024. There is nothing I can do to bring Bella back. But I DO NOT want this to happen to another dog. Care must be taken to ensure any signs of distress are addressed Immediately. This was not my case. Nothing was addressed and then it was too late. I wanted to try a groomer closer to my house, so I went with Canine Design. There was also another dog at the groomer that was howling as if it was being murdered. When I picked up my dog, the same dog was still howling. I should have turned around as soon as I heard the other dog. When I picked up my dog, she was shaking in terror. The owner complained that my dog had "fear pooped" (and after hearing the other dog the entire time, I can see why), and waited expectantly to be tipped for the inconvenience. I really wish I could give this place negative stars. I've gone back to my regular groomer ever since, who treats my dog very well. My dog has a bounce in her step when I pick her up from the regular groomer. read more

While the dog biscuits kept under the counter, were surely part of what Mac liked, the staff was obviously patient and caring with him, including the time towards the end of his life, when he had difficulty standing...They did a great job grooming him. -We moved away and Mac passed, but I will always be grateful for Canine Design. read more

Have had my 50 pound golden doodle groomed at Canine Design four times. Every appointment went well. She looks great when I get her back. And she has no hesitation to go inside when we get there. I called in last minute Saturday morning before a weekend holiday and was able to be squeezed in. After being told my dog would not be able to be groomed at another location where I had setup an appointment a week prior I was thankful they were able to see my little Westie. Even though they were extremely booked for the day and I was told it would take several hours until my little pooch was ready, I received a call 1.5 hours later letting me know she was ready and boy was she looking pretty. They did an excellent job with her grooming, nicer than our usual location. Well worth the $65 for a well groomed and happy Westie. I'm so happy they were able to service my little girl so quickly and last minute. Parking is tight with only two spots in front of the small shop. When you walk in you're only able to see the front of the shop and the pups are in the back out of view. Staff seemed knowledgeable and friendly. Will definitely be back! read more

After reading several excellent reviews for Canine Design in Kensington, I knew it was time to schedule my 5 year-old Havanese, Bucky, for an appointment. While I had been very loyal to the grooming department at PetSmart in Gaithersburg, when their amazing dog groomer Audrey left, I wanted to take my time to find another outstanding groomer for him. To begin with, I'm pleased to say that making an appointment was easy - they had good availability for appointments and spoke courteously on the phone. When I arrived this morning to bring my dog in, the owner of Canine Design, Doreen, who also grooms a lot of the dogs, listened attentively to what I was asking for, what his prior grooming experiences have been like, etc... and gave me a respectable window of time in which he might be ready. At the end, they did have him ready within the time frame they had given me, and when I saw him, I realized that this was one of his best grooming experiences yet! It is clear that they took excellent care of him - his fur was thoroughly washed, expertly styled, and is now back to its usual incredibly soft condition. At pick-up time, he also seemed very much at-ease and happy with his experience - at least that's what I intuit from his body language, facial expressions, and energy level. Cindy did a FABULOUS job on my Rottweiler! My girl needed a MAJOR spa day and she made her look AMAZING!!! I took her in by 10 am and she was all done by 1:30 pm. She got her bath, ears, nails and teeth done on top of being shaved (I know, not what you're supposed to do to rotties, but my allergies were outta control) all for $75!!! Warning!!!! Do not take young puppies here... Honestly, don't take any dogs here. Its practically abuse. I had scheduled an appointment earlier last week over the phone. At the time I scheduled the appointment, I had a six to seven minute conversation with the woman who answered the call about my puppy. She seemed pleasant, caring, and concerned at the time. We discussed what I wanted done and what were my concerns and issues with puppy grooming. She was aware that he was still young and teething and in training. I explained that I was struggling with cleaning his face and eyes due to how bitey he is right now. She promised they would take excellent care of my dog. One issue that we did discuss was the ears. She asked if I wanted them tweezed advising that they typically do not tweeze dog's ears who are so young. I agreed that his ears should NOT be tweezed and gave her a firm NO for doing that. The ears were not an area of concern for me so I was clear not to touch them. Considering she said it was their standard practice to not tweeze young dogs ears, I didn't think I needed to mention it again when I dropped him off. (Edit: my dad who was with me when I dropped him off just reminded me that I actually did say something briefly about no tweezing the ears at that time also) I took my 5 month old puppy to my appointment at Canine Design yesterday, Friday June 2nd. I dropped him off at 9 in the morning and he was ready around 10:30. When I picked him up, I first wasn't thrilled with the haircut itself. I felt like it was a little bit longer than I wanted and they could have done a better job on his face. But he seemed kind of traumatized and I was happy to just take him home without complaining. As I was paying my bill, I was very uncomfortable when the woman at the front desk suggested they'd had to grab him hard by the Scruff of the neck to make him listen. It sounded more like abuse than training. But I didn't say anything because I was happy to leave and give him love. She also commented that I would expect him to be sore and lethargic for the rest of the day. A 5 month old puppy is not lethargic that easily!!! And why the heck would he be sore after a bath and a haircut? But again I dismissed her comments and took him home. He definitely wasn't himself but I figured he was just tired. I first noticed that his testicles were very red and irritated (too young to fix him). Upon further exploration, I discovered that there was actually a cut on the testicles and that he had been nicked shaving. While putting ointment on that, I discovered the tip of his penis was also bleeding. I put ointment there as well and called my veterinarian. He said to give him a Benadryl and it would soothe the itch of his testicles and give him a peaceful night. At that time I gave the puppies body a total once over exploration. I discovered the back of his neck was so sore that I couldn't touch it and that the insides of his ears had been totally tweezed clean without hair inside of them. I was shocked. I also discovered that he did not want me touching his ears... This usually was his favorite place for a good scratch and head petting. I went to bed last night hoping everything would be resolved by morning and he slept peacefully with the Benadryl. However this morning I woke up to discover that he kept shaking his head. When I tried to touch him he screamed and winced in pain. The puppy was in agony. I took him to my veterinarian to discover that both of his ears had gone from clean to disgusting, gloppy, smelly meses overnight. Both had a raging infection within them. Not only did they tweeze the inside of his ears they probably did not use tweezers that were sterile. It's disgusting. He had to have an antibiotic shot and is on steroids for several days and I just racked up almost $200 in vet bills because of this visit. It might be more because I need to go back on Monday for a further check-up. I am including a picture here of what the inside of his ear looks like right now as a word of warning to anyone else who might consider using this business. Canine Design will be receiving a letter from my attorney in the mail and I hope their malpractice insurance will cover my Veterinary bills and the reimbursement of my appointments cost. This was abuse. They admitted to grabbing him by the Scruff of the neck. They sliced off the tip of his penis they scratched and cut up his testicles and they left his poor ears so infected I'm worried he will never find joy again when I pet him there. I feel broken and have been crying all morning because of what they did to my poor little five month old baby boy. I discovered canine design as a referral from a woman at my veterinary office whose dog had a cute haircut. I looked online at reviews and there was only one negative one on Yelp which I dismissed as seeming a little crazy. It totally wasn't. Dogs leave this place in pain. Shame on me for not posting a review earlier. I've been taking my dogs here for 15 years. Older poodle (now passed away) was grumpy and didn't like anyone but was always well behaved here, which wasn't true elsewhere! That's how I found Doreen. Now I take my rescue mini poodle and my maltese. Again, rescue poodle is anxious and stranger-shy but seems to do really well here. The cuts are fabulous. Doreen asks what you want in terms of shaping and length, or you can just let them do their thing. I also like that I'm generally able to get an appointment fairly last-minute if I have some time off of work. read more
