Cannonball, delicious food, delivered cannonball speed! My wife and I went to Cannonball on a Saturday night ready for a relaxed dinner. The food is fantastic. Seriously. Creative flavors, well executed dishes, everything we had was excellent. But the pacing? Absolute chaos. We ordered Negronis (an apéritif, meaning the drink is supposed to come before the meal). Two food dishes landed on the table before the cocktails even showed up. Then the rest of the plates began arriving at what can only be described as cannonball speed. We were still eating one dish while another server materialized with the next like a food ninja. Our tiny table looked like a game of culinary Tetris. In and out in 45 minutes on a Saturday night. Great if you're power-lunching with clients. Less great if you're trying to linger over dinner. Bottom line: fantastic food. Just know the kitchen fires dishes like they're loading artillery. We were told it would be a 45 min wait but weren't in a rush so put our name in and went for a walk. Ten minutes later, to our surprise and delight, we were seated and our biscuit order had been placed (do it as soon as you sit, they require 20 minutes in heaven before they reach your table). A lovely place, a great night, my husband was a little surprised the burger was medium and he wasn't asked for a temp when he ordered it... but he also scarfed the whole thing and said it was one of the best burgers he's ever had. read more

We were pretty excited to try Cannonball since we love Hippo and are regulars there. Unfortunately it was a miss - both food and service. TLDR: we had a bad experience bc we waited an hour between our starters and mains, and the waiter did not check on us at all within that hour, so we needed to flag down another person to check on our food. The good: - buttermilk biscuits with the sweet butter. Really delicious The bad: - the burger and fries. The best part of this dish was the pickle! The burger was overcooked so was quite dry. Fries also did not hit. - idk if it was an off night but after our biscuits came, it was literally an hour before receiving our mains. We took pics of our food so we have time stamps! We were trying to flag down our waiter while waiting after 50 minutes to tell him we're just going to leave without our mains, but he was nowhere to be found. Pretty disappointing - maybe he has too many tables but it was such a poor experience. But they did give us a free olive oil cake to celebrate our anniversary but at that point we were already pretty upset. We unfortunately won't be back but glad we tried the biscuits. read more

A real cool kid spot in South Pasadena! Think the moodiness/aesthetic of a Hillstone but the fun menu variety of a tapas joint. Reservations for a weekday night were fairly easy to snag and when we came in it was decently busy. Drinks were delicious and light, perfect for sipping throughout the night. I got the Miyazaki - a gin based cocktail with citrus elements and my fiance got the Love Came Along which was a similar profile but tequila based. We ordered the following: Biscuits - 10/10 probably our favorite dish, light, flaky, melt in your mouth goodness. The whipped cinnamon sugar butter reminded us of Texas Roadhouse in the best of ways. Definitely worth the wait Burrata w/tomatoes, cucumbers & herbs - 8/10 our 2nd favorite dish, was really fun, punchy, and refreshing for the summer heat Fideos w/clams - 7/10 great little dish with bits of chorizo that made the dish. Cheeseburger w/fries - 7/10 we really liked the fries which were perfectly crispy however the burger wasn't our favorite, a little dense and one dimensional Overall had a great time but have to mention that the pace was a bit slow for us, I think it took between 15-20 mins between each dish. So a heads up that it'll be a nice leisurely dinner. However staff were super sweet, attentive, and really made the night fun. read more

New restaurant in the South Pasadena area. There are various parking in the area, but I had to park a few blocks away because I went during the same time as the farmers market. It's a pretty space, but it's also very cramped and loud. My only complaint is that the tables are too close together, and I had to move to the bar or else I would have kept bumping into the people next to me and overhearing their conversations. Wolf was a good bartender and server. The food was good, and so were the drinks. It was about $50 per person. read more

Waitress was helpful and friendly. We ordered the biscuits which are the same as the ones from Hippo. Two of us got prawns, one the steak, and the other the trout. Everyone agreed the prawns were great (I gave the two who didn't order prawns a prawn to try). We also got the calamari (nothing special actually) and the roasted carrots (the waitress was right in saying they were the best carrots she's had). Drinks were good. Tried to go here once. Very impromptu so decided to just grab a drink in the very empty lounge. Such a wasted use of space where servers walk by with plates of food that you are not allowed to order. Joked with the owner about it and I don't think he enjoyed my east coast, cutsie (I thought) bluntness. Then my favorite! The employee health insurance charge on our bill. You will never convince me of this. Is it supposed to be a political statement? or are unaware that many un-insured and underinsured dine here. It's rude and presumptuous of a biz owner who owns several restaurants, most likely owns their home and a few luxury vehicles ask this of their patrons to help them pay their employees a living wage. read more

Went here on a whim before a show at the Sid The Cat Auditorium. We didn't have a reservation and it was Valentine's Day. They squeezed us in with no wait and we proceeded to have one of the best meals my wife and I have had in years, which considering we travel extensively and seek out quality restaurants says a lot. The biscuits, so flaky, so buttery... my toddler niece also could not get enough! The shaved celery salad, such an awesome mix of flavors. You MUST try the shrimp. In Piccolo old spot. Not as good. But ok. Menu needs work. Limited options. The calamari was straight out of Olive Garden. Felt like an afterthought...you know just throw it in there. Entrees were decent. Except that my plate was brought to table 16 minutes after everyone else. Poor communication. The waiter dropped off some French fries without explanation. Figured out it was because of that really late plate. No one said anything after either. The whiskey was better. Joe brought out two barrel picks that were top top. I have been eagerly awaiting the opening of Cannonball ever since I first read about it via Eater LA. I knew the chef was behind Hippo, but didn't realize he is also a part of ERB (both of my faves)...which made me even more excited to try this spot. Finally made it in last week, and it absolutely lived up to my expectations! Our party of 3 shared the flaky biscuits (a must!), shaved celery salad, burrata with sweet peppers, fideos with clams (so good - even as a first-timer to this dish I've never heard of before), and the steak, which was cooked a perfect medium rare. Every plate was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. The menu seems to rotate, so I'm already looking forward to coming back to try other dishes. Came in early on a Saturday and from the moment we walked in we got the most wonderful service at possible touch point. Joe, Cameron, the bar, the host station AND the lounge and bar upstairs could not have been warmer or more welcoming. The food and drinks were all fabulous and we were blown away be the reasonably priced extensive whiskey/scotch/bourbon selection. All our food dishes were excellent. Great cocktails. Dinner at Cannonball in South Pasadena was excellent. The steak was tender and perfectly prepared, the biscuits were rich and flaky accompanied with a sweet whipped butter. Also ordered a spring lettuce salad which was so fresh and crisp. The Milk & Honey martini was beautifully balanced. Subtly sweet with a smooth finish. I'm not a fan of overly sweet drinks so this was perfect. The space itself is beautiful, with an outside patio and 2 levels of seating. Service was also amazing. Cameron took great care of our table. Starting with the biscuits, the food was really great. The celery salad had a great crunch, tangy and sweet combination. The burger was super simple, but quality ingredients in every bite. We walked in super excited to try the restaurant as it's been a spot on my list to try, and I thought it would be the perfect time to visit while friends were visiting from Florida. As soon as I stepped in the door to ask for a table the hostess looked at my group of 6 and said they were booked for the rest of the night, even though we called around 6:30pm to see if we could walk in, and we were directed to come in around 7:30pm with no wait. And to be honest the restaurant was semi-empty when we walked in. Every time I asked a question I was cut off, and I felt like I was being rushed out the door. We sat at the bar on the 2nd floor. What a delightful treat. Wolf was our bartender and made sure he got our order just right. We started by placing an order of the biscuits as they take a few extra minutes. With a side of cinnamon butter to go with them it was the perfect savory sweet combination. We split the flank steak that came on a bed of freshly made mashed potatoes. They have a crafted cocktail list and as we watched Wolf create our cocktails we were excited to try them. They didn't disappoint our taste buds. We will gladly be back to Cannonball. The overall experience from the hostess that opens the door as you exit and greets you as you enter to asking you how your day is going as they are seating you is an all around amazing experience. The ambiance was a delight as well. With brick and tea lights that give you an old fashioned feel. Don't forget to check out the bathroom. The wallpaper and simplicity give a full sense of the full vision. They give you a dining experience. They thought of every detail and executed nicely. (The fake greenery needs to go. The wreath and the fake flowers didn't match the rest of the restaurant.) Just a thought hang plants from the ceiling that hang down giving some illumination to look up at the high ceilings. I wanted to like Cannonball but the experience fell short. Made reservation for 4 for dinner. They should indicate that they have two dining rooms so guests can pick which table to reserve. We were seated upstairs which was incredibly loud with bad acoustics. Strike one. Building itself is beautiful. Then we had the food. What we had: Biscuits (too rich) - buttery & delicious Burrata with sourdough (meh) Carrots (yummy, get this) Tuna tartare (skip it). Fideas (please remove the clam shells and use a bigger serving plate. Also why no serving spoons? Trout was basic & boring. The mocktail we had which looked like an old fashioned was delicious. It was nice to have a small menu but nothing stood out. Service was haphazard. Server was friendly enough but inconsistent. Their share plates are maybe 5" in diameter. Why so minuscule? Our server never bothered to clear them and replace with larger plates after the appetizers course. I mentioned the restaurant is super loud. Add to that, TWICE servers dropped a metal tray at the bar which went clanging through the entire dining room. Really off-putting. Once you can understand. Twice was a nuisance. Overall, very underwhelming & sadly would not return. read more

Cannonball is a delightful spot, and I'm pretty sure I visited when it was called Crossings. As the opening chef at Mike & Anne's in 2006, I'm thrilled to see new restaurants thrive here. I still recall the guy with the lavender beard from back then! My daughter and I arrived at 5 p.m. and were seated right away. The service was warm, and our server was top-notch. The food was a mix of hits and misses. The homemade biscuits were phenomenal--warm, flaky, and sublime with sweet butter to spread on their steamy insides. They're a must-order. The grilled prawns were tasty, but the bland aioli added little beyond a cooling contrast. My daughter's chicken dish--boneless, skinless breast over roasted potato slices with sauce--was flavorful but overpriced for its size. The tuna tartare was decent, though the yuzu-heavy ponzu sauce overwhelmed the tuna's delicate flavor, and it lacked the usual toast or chips. The fries were a letdown--hot and crisp but ruined by a coating that left an unpleasant texture and taste. At $12, I expected homemade, not frozen. Ambiance is beautiful. There's a 4% surcharge for kitchen, nice!! Those cooks must make a lot in tips. Hope their hourly is still good. Despite some misses, I'd return for those biscuits alone.
