Cannonball is such a great addition to downtown South Pasadena, serving mostly modern American dishes with some twists. The restaurant itself is beautiful with low lighting and a trendy but cozy vibe. My husband and I were seated at the bar upstairs and started off with drinks. He got the Raymond Hill, which was their fantastic version of a Manhattan - booze-forward, and full-bodied. I got the Love Walked In, which was deliciously gingery and crisp. For dinner, we shared 4 dishes (which was more than enough for 2 people - we were stuffed by the end of the meal). We started off with the buttermilk biscuits, which were the BEST I've ever had in my life. They flaked apart effortlessly and the layers were so delicately soft but still crispy. The honey butter served with the biscuits complemented them perfectly. We also ordered the roasted carrots which were served under a bed of greens. They were delightfully cumin-y and bright. The bitter greens contrasted against the sweet caramelized carrots in a very balanced way. Next up were the fideos with clams and cured chorizo. If you like paella, you would probably like this, as the prominent spice was saffron. It was a cozy and filling dish; we enjoyed it. The last dish we received was the hanger steak, which was probably the most tender hanger steak I've had. It was four slices of a crispy barbecued 8oz steak, cooked perfectly medium rare on the inside and packed with flavor. It was served alongside some delicious aligot potatoes (thick cheesy potato puree). We would definitely reorder this dish. Given the quality of everything we ordered, I think everything was generally well priced (albeit not cheap). Overall, we were very impressed by this meal and are looking forward to our next visit. This place is definitely vibey! We came here only a week after it opened and I would have never guessed that based on how efficient and great everything was. We had great service and the place was packed! Ended up getting the burger which was pretty tasty but the star of the meal was the carrots which I would have never thought. We were too full for dessert but will be back! When we came, they didn't have a sign yet so it can be tough to find since the front is pretty small. read more

Everything on the menu is great but my faves are the steak, shrimp, little gem salad and you MUST get the biscuits! Service is impeccable as well - professional yet warm. I always feel very well taken care of here. Shout out to their sommelier! She's always recommended great wines to us. Has great taste, extensive knowledge without being pretentious, and her one handed pouring is impressive! It's such a cute spot especially if you can get a seat by the window. It's a small space though in an old building so it can get pretty loud. But honestly worth it. Cannonball is easily one of my favorite dinner spots in LA. A real cool kid spot in South Pasadena! Think the moodiness/aesthetic of a Hillstone but the fun menu variety of a tapas joint. Reservations for a weekday night were fairly easy to snag and when we came in it was decently busy. Drinks were delicious and light, perfect for sipping throughout the night. I got the Miyazaki - a gin based cocktail with citrus elements and my fiance got the Love Came Along which was a similar profile but tequila based. We ordered the following: Biscuits - 10/10 probably our favorite dish, light, flaky, melt in your mouth goodness. The whipped cinnamon sugar butter reminded us of Texas Roadhouse in the best of ways. Definitely worth the wait Burrata w/tomatoes, cucumbers & herbs - 8/10 our 2nd favorite dish, was really fun, punchy, and refreshing for the summer heat Fideos w/clams - 7/10 great little dish with bits of chorizo that made the dish. Cheeseburger w/fries - 7/10 we really liked the fries which were perfectly crispy however the burger wasn't our favorite, a little dense and one dimensional Overall had a great time but have to mention that the pace was a bit slow for us, I think it took between 15-20 mins between each dish. So a heads up that it'll be a nice leisurely dinner. However staff were super sweet, attentive, and really made the night fun. read more

New restaurant in the South Pasadena area. There are various parking in the area, but I had to park a few blocks away because I went during the same time as the farmers market. It's a pretty space, but it's also very cramped and loud. My only complaint is that the tables are too close together, and I had to move to the bar or else I would have kept bumping into the people next to me and overhearing their conversations. Wolf was a good bartender and server. The food was good, and so were the drinks. It was about $50 per person. read more

Waitress was helpful and friendly. We ordered the biscuits which are the same as the ones from Hippo. Two of us got prawns, one the steak, and the other the trout. Everyone agreed the prawns were great (I gave the two who didn't order prawns a prawn to try). We also got the calamari (nothing special actually) and the roasted carrots (the waitress was right in saying they were the best carrots she's had). Drinks were good. We were pretty excited to try Cannonball since we love Hippo and are regulars there. Unfortunately it was a miss - both food and service. TLDR: we had a bad experience bc we waited an hour between our starters and mains, and the waiter did not check on us at all within that hour, so we needed to flag down another person to check on our food. The good: - buttermilk biscuits with the sweet butter. Really delicious The bad: - the burger and fries. The best part of this dish was the pickle! The burger was overcooked so was quite dry. Fries also did not hit. - idk if it was an off night but after our biscuits came, it was literally an hour before receiving our mains. We took pics of our food so we have time stamps! We were trying to flag down our waiter while waiting after 50 minutes to tell him we're just going to leave without our mains, but he was nowhere to be found. Pretty disappointing - maybe he has too many tables but it was such a poor experience. But they did give us a free olive oil cake to celebrate our anniversary but at that point we were already pretty upset. We unfortunately won't be back but glad we tried the biscuits. read more

Creative flavors, well executed dishes, everything we had was excellent. But the pacing? Absolute chaos. We ordered Negronis (an apéritif, meaning the drink is supposed to come before the meal). Two food dishes landed on the table before the cocktails even showed up. Then the rest of the plates began arriving at what can only be described as cannonball speed. We were still eating one dish while another server materialized with the next like a food ninja. Our tiny table looked like a game of culinary Tetris. In and out in 45 minutes on a Saturday night. Figured out it was because of that really late plate. No one said anything after either. The whiskey was better. Joe brought out two barrel picks that were top top. This neighborhood spot CANNOT BE BEAT! Not sure words can describe the phenomenal experience we had here tonight. First off- I had made an error on my reservation/date/time. We had the pleasure of meeting Joe, the manager who went out of his way to accommodate us despite the mistake. Joe was so kind and helpful- he really was the cherry on top to our already incredible experience. Drinks- we wanted to try everything! The drinks are well balanced, interesting, and at a great price point. Good luck just having 1. Food- everything we had was amazing. The biscuits, so flaky, so buttery... my toddler niece also could not get enough! The shaved celery salad, such an awesome mix of flavors. You MUST try the shrimp. Perfectly grilled with a wonderful aioli. The steak and the branzino were equally fantastic. We did all but lick the plates clean. Joe, Cameron, the bar, the host station AND the lounge and bar upstairs could not have been warmer or more welcoming. I knew the chef was behind Hippo, but didn't realize he is also a part of ERB (both of my faves)...which made me even more excited to try this spot. Finally made it in last week, and it absolutely lived up to my expectations! Our party of 3 shared the flaky biscuits (a must!), shaved celery salad, burrata with sweet peppers, fideos with clams (so good - even as a first-timer to this dish I've never heard of before), and the steak, which was cooked a perfect medium rare. Every plate was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. The menu seems to rotate, so I'm already looking forward to coming back to try other dishes.
