I thought the food was great. I chose the yellowfin tuna tartare as my main and the burrata salad as my app. Honestly the salad was better than the tartare. I got to try the steak, chicken, and polenta as well as the celery salad. I loved all of those dishes and probably liked the tartare the least. It was mainly the texture and that it was heavily processed and like a pate rather than a tartare. We got one of each dessert, a peanut butter mousse and olive oil cake. I liked the flavor of the cake but the texture of the mousse. Neither of the desserts did it for me. We sat outside and the train being literally right next to this venue made it charming maybe one time and the rest of the time the train traveling by was adjusting and annoying. Always such a great building and decor when you walk in, with the brick walls. We were seated upstairs, which always tends to be a bit quieter than the hustle and bustle of downstairs. They did convert the inner dining area (on the left hand side when you walk up) to a lounge area, which they intend to serve food and drinks also. The cocktail menu was cute. Had a few drinks that seemed to be in name sake for South Pas (e.g. Raymond Hill, Garfield Park Swizzle, Take the "A" train. Menu was quite small, but very reasonably priced. We asked if the menu was the starter menu and if they would be expanding it and were told no, the menu would stand as is. For a party of 4, we ordered almost everything on the menu. The standouts: - spring lettuces (so fresh and herbacious) - buttermilk biscuits - the honey butter was yummy - prawns - very tasty - a tad over salted, could have used a squeeze of lemon to cut through the richness I'm always rooting for the local restaurant in South Pas. This is it, y'all. The perfect bistro. I can't say enough good things about this place, and I dare say I don't have a single bad thing to say, either. I told my husband this place feels like the end of a feel-good movie where the beloved underdog that always dreamed of opening a restaurant, and finally does it to rave reviews. Despite its buzz, what I love about Cannonball is it has the excellence without the snobbery. It's clear everyone here's an industry veteran and is the best at what they do. This was easily some of the best service we've ever had in the LA area, and Cameron, even though he had probably 10 (!) tables, was kind, thoughtful, and always around even though he was probably doing a million things at once. I never once had less than half my water glass empty (as a big water drinker too, oops). The wine + spirits list is impressive along with the perfectly paired cocktails. As a snobbish southerner, these may be the best biscuits I've EVER had. It's more like filo dough! Despite ordering multiple dishes, they all came out freshly cooked at perfect times - it's obvious they have this down to a science, and the burger + fries are even worth a try. The steak was my favorite, though! Also, the playlist was GOOD too. We heard some Oasis deep cuts, Cold War Kids, Jungle, and a few others. What a difference just under three months makes, unfortunately. I truly hope this isn't another situation of a restaurant starting off strong and then deteriorating to the point of closure. This time, we sat upstairs. Unlike last time, the service was plain awful. It took forever, easily 15 minutes, for a waiter to come to give us any attention and take our drink order. Drinks took forever to arrive. Server took forever to return to take our meal order. Very little attention and extremely disappointing service throughout the meal. On top of that, the chairs upstairs are incredibly uncomfortable, and 2 of us came out with aches. All this at very high prices. Ridiculous. The food was almost as good as last time. The biscuits were overdone but still decent. The shaved celery salad, tuna tartare and shrimp appetizers were excellent. The steak and sea bream were flavorful, as were the olive oil cake and chocolate pot de creme desserts. We were a bit surprised that, even though we were celebrating a birthday, neither desert was comp'd. Given the incredibly high prices (ex., $18 for 4 biscuits), this was a huge miss, as was the "service charge" of 4% that's added to a bill that's already quite high, which we found offensive. I don't know if it's a function of sitting upstairs versus downstairs, but, whatever it is, this time, it was a stunningly huge disappointment. Horrible service, for me, ruins the experience, no matter how tasty the food may be. We won't be going back anytime soon. Cannonball, get it together or you may very well meet the same fate as the restaurants in that space before you, which started out great, then deteriorated and failed. This place is a gem! All of the fish dishes are excellent, the chicken is great, carrots are terrific, love the biscuits with honey butter, and the shaved celery salad is my addiction. I'd say the burger is just above average, but not special enough for the size/price. The ONLY bad food item I've ever tasted there is the calamari. It wasn't fishy or dangerous or pig parts or anything like that. It's just not the lightly battered style with delicate protein that I prefer. It's more like the heavy handed batter from an American fried chicken joint. It feels out of place at this otherwise refined establishment. Cocktails are quite lovely, as is the wine and beer selection. Servers are good, and they're even making it feel slightly less rushed lately, which is a big bonus! One area where I hope they'll soon be improving: the plates! It might sound silly if you've never been, but everything is served on microscopic plates. Think saucers and salad plates. It's just unworkable, as things are constantly spilling off the edges. And the solution is not to use less sauce or reduce portions, because they're not huge to begin with. But look, I'm still giving a solid 5 stars because they have EARNED it! I've probably been 6-8 times. This is by far the best thing in South Pas and well beyond!! read more

I was very happy to see something come in and revive the space that Piccolo once occupied, it's such a cool building with such character. We didn't even leave room to try the olive oil cake at the end. Next time! The stand out for me was the Fideos which had a lot of interesting flavors and the acidity from the tomato paired with the sweetness of the clams really brightens the dish. My husband's favorite was the white prawn which was packed with flavor and had a hint of spice smoke and sweet . All of the dishes that we had were incredibly well balanced, and a lot of care was taken preparing them. First time here and overall a really solid experience, but I'd definitely recommend making a reservation if you can. We showed up without one and were told the wait would be about an hour. After giving my info, the text said an hour and 15 minutes, and we ended up waiting closer to an hour and a half before being seated. They placed us at the bar in front of the kitchen, which wasn't what my companion hoped for at first, but it turned out to be pretty fun--especially for me as a foodie, since I got to watch the chefs work their magic up close. The bartender was wonderful and made us a custom tequila-based espresso martini for a birthday celebration that was delicious. For appetizers, we had the celery salad and the biscuits--the biscuits are a must-order, they just melt in your mouth. For mains, I had the chicken (great flavor with a nice kick of spice and perfectly cooked veggies), while my companion had the burger and loved it--especially the generous portion of fries.
