Ambiance is a 20/10 - this place is so so cool inside. It reminds me of a place in the French Quarter in NOLA. Super stylish, big bar in the center with seating all around. We started w/ the Whipped Feta - creamy, slightly tangy, topped w/caramelized honey butter and a little kick from the Urfa chili. The warm, fluffy za'atar pita made it dangerously addictive. I could've ordered another round just for myself. The Maitake Mushroom was beautifully cooked w/a sticky chili glaze, balanced by salsa verde and tahini. So flavorful and satisfying (and vegan + gluten free!). The King Salmon was perfectly seared - tender inside w/ so much flavor from the ezme and red chermoula. We also ordered the Saffron Rice, which was fragrant and fluffy w/ almonds, barberries, currants, and crispy shallots - the perfect complement to everything on the table. And the Sticky Japanese Sweet Potato? SO good. Sweet, garlicky, a little spicy from the harissa oil, w/ hazelnut crunch and ají verde. One of my favorites of the night. WOW! What a meal... It's been a while since I last dined here several years ago, but my husband and I decided to grab dinner here last weekend (on a whim) when we couldn't decide where to eat. Boy, I am so glad we decided on Checker Hall. If you haven't been here before, it's tucked away on the second story of the Lodge Room concert venue. The decor inside is romantic and cozy, and the service is very attentive. Since we were walk-ins on a Friday night, we did have to wait a few minutes for a table. We started off with drinks, which were both delightfully complex and interesting. We were also starving by the time we were seated, so we immediately ordered the tomato toast, which was INCREDIBLE. The bread was lightly crisped and was topped with the most delicious garlicky aioli and fresh grated tomatoes. We also got the whipped feta served with a caramelized honey butter (which I think was the star ingredient of the dish) that came with a couple of fluffy pitas. After apps, we got the Persian cucumber salad, which was very refreshing and lightly spicy (from the chili crisp), and the steak frites. The steak was cooked perfectly medium rare and had a great flavor, and the fries were salty and addictive. However, the steak was a little gristly for my liking, as it had some really tough bites I couldn't chew through. I did mention that to our server and was told that since it was near the end of the night, they were using one of the last cuts of steak they had left, which I completely understand. We finished off the meal with one more drink and the sticky toffee cake. I do wish the cake were a touch more moist but the toffee/caramel sauce was absolutely spectacular and made up for that completely. Overall, it was a phenomenal and memorable meal. While not cheap, I think everything was pretty reasonably priced. It came out to $183 before tip between the two of us, but we were pretty hungry and got 3 alcoholic drinks. I don't know if I'd get the steak again ($64), but I would absolutely reorder the tomato toast and whipped feta. The vibes and ambiance were immaculate as well. The dining room has vibes for days, there was live music, and the patio 2-seaters looked like they offer a great view (will have to come back to try it). Checker Hall serves up delicious Mediterranean food that is slightly elevated. If you want the limited balcony seat, I believe the max it can hold is 4 and I HIGHLY recommend that you are one of the first ones because it filled up fast. Don't get me wrong, the inside is just as beautiful especially with the winter time approaching. All of the staff is really nice giving their best recommendations. This was a fantastic dining experience for me! Checker Hall serves new-age Mediterranean food that really packs a punch in every bite. I am not kidding every single thing we ordered from the kebabs to the hummus was loaded with flavor and zingy-ness. Started with the whipped feta dip which comes with fresh pita - outstanding! Would highly recommend. It was the creamiest feta topped with honey butter and chili. And the pita is so warm and fluffy, topped with zaatar: it makes a perfect accompaniment to the dip. Also got the hummus which is topped with crispy chickpeas - so good! Especially if you have a big table, it's a great idea to pick a few dips and that way everyone can share in the deliciousness. For the mains we got 3 kebabs: one chicken, one salmon, and one beef kofta (ground beef). I think the salmon was my favorite but they were all perfectly cooked and seasoned. There was nothing we ate that didn't stimulate the senses. My only complaint is a stupid one and irrelevant--there is almost too much going on. Every plate has a half dozen flavors each and the synergy can be a bit overwhelming. What I suggest is pair well and eat somewhat separately. The cocktails harmonize in their own way. My husband took me here for my birthday dinner a couple nights ago. Love the vibe and feel of the space with retro notes and a lovely balcony overlooking Figueroa. Staff was attentive and prompt, able to make suggestions about drinks and menu. We have a glass of the champagne and hummus plate to start. We also tried the hamachi crudo out of the appetizers section. Hummus was creamy and spicy with a really nice bread. The crudo was good too, very small and delicate dish. None of the entrees appealed to us, so we ordered two skewers (king salmon and pork belly) and some of the vegetable small plates (cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, saffron rice). The skewers were very good, although the pork belly was a bit overcooked. The saffron rice was excellent. However, the Brussel sprouts, cauliflower and Japanese sweet potato were all doused with some version of sweet sauce and overdressed with stuff. Almost felt like we were tasting the same thing but with different textures, more of the same- all heavy handed with toppings and sauce. Drinks were very good. One thing we noticed is the entry and stair spaces look a little drab and may need a new coat of paint- lots of what looks like non intentional chips on the paint, makes the space worn and takes away from getting to the restaurant. Oh checker hall, you have my heart. This place puts excellences to a whole new level with every detailed being impeccable! Right from arrival, every corner, wall, candle holder, plate, wall, lamp is beautiful and awe inspiring. They have a great drink menu including non alcoholic beverages. I ordered the carrots & chicken schnitzel. Both amazing!! Service was professional and everything perfectly timed. Came here with a friend to kill some time, had never been and was pleasantly surprised, the bartenders were friendly, drinks were fantastic and the oysters were fresh and delicious as well. The bar itself is in the same building as the lodge room, has a second story view of Figueroa, good for lazing about and people watching. read more

Make sure to get a reservation, walk ins take a very long time to be seated. The place is very pretty, great ambiance for drinks. The appetizers were delicious. Definitely try the whipped feta, I don't usually like oysters but really enjoyed the raw oysters here, a pleasant surprise. The Brussel sprouts were also amazing. Unfortunately, the entrées didn't quite live up to the same standard, the steak frites or the chicken schnitzel(which i could compare to milanesa drizzled with honey). The service was mediocre, i was expecting this because of the location, some of the staff, our server especially, had that "im too cool for this job" attitude, which made his responses to our requests for recommendations feel dismissive and unhelpful. read more
