The server brought a habanero salsa and is a bit too spicy. It has a really good flavor. I had the carne asada and the skirt steak was well seasoned. Hubby had the carne asada, Al pastor, and carnitas tacos and he loved it. The tacos had enough meat and had double tortillas. The horchata was good and has free refills. I had the Grouper Tacos as a lettuce wrap and they were really very good - the grouper was cooked perfectly and it was not over-seasoned, just enough bite to make it interesting. This particular visit I can't speak to the my experience regarding having their food (other than their complimentary chips and salsa), because for the first time in a while I wasn't overly hungry and for lunch decided to have a liquid lunch (aka beer). Our server was super attentive and friendly. He asked what we'd be having and I asked if they had any drink specials. He said happy hour didn't start until 2 pm, but said they were having $2.99 Dos Equis draft, which sold me right there. I ordered two (one for me and one for my husband). The drafts were cold and crisp and the lime added enough tartness I crave in my beer. Two beers later, half a bowl of tortilla chips, I was ready for a nap. We're new to the area and were starving after beaching and exploring all afternoon. We got there around 5:30 and it was nice and quiet but became packed and a tad noisy within 30 minutes. Izzy was our waitress, and she went above and beyond to make sure I was safe from my gluten and shellfish allergies. Hubby got a burrito which came with fries. He loved it and was amazingly unable to finish. I ordered chicken fajitas which came with beans, rice, and salad and corn tortillas (GF). Our daughter's roommate told us Cantina Louie was the best Mexican restaurant in St. Augustine. There were tons of cars in the parking lot and the establishment was packed, we we hopeful. The servers and staff weren't rude, but they were fairly indifferent. The menu has a good selection and the prices are fair. The food looked good. I was surprised to see my husband's chicken tacos were served with arugal & mixed greens instead of shredded iceberg lettuce -they looked beautiful on the plate. Unfortunately my husband said they had no flavor. I had the veggie burrito. The description said it would be stuffed with black beans and veggies and covered with queso and roasted red peppers. I received a large burrito with some queso poured over it and a couple of roasted red peppers from a jar. No refired, beans, rice or any other garnish on the plate. The inside of my burrito was stuffed with black beans, corn, large chunks of green pepper, onion and tomatoes - a very unadventurous variety of veggies with little flavor. Came here on recommendation. Very popular local spot, it was packed and the parking lot was crazy. The chips were served warm and the margarita was cold. The margarita was OK. I ordered three chicken soft tacos. The salad was arugula, there was better than your average cheese, the chicken was real chicken, not from a can, all of which is good. What was not good was that the chicken had no flavor. Nada. It was a missed opportunity in my opinion. Even taco salad chicken usually has more flavor. There was more on the menu so perhaps I missed the go to. The Tamale Sunday deal sounds like a good deal but I am not a tamale fan. Sorry Louie, this visit was meh. read more

The food was good, but the service and cooks attention to detail ruined our stay. Both my wife and I's order were wrong. My wife could not tell the waitress because she did not visit our table that much and I had eaten half of my food by the time I realized the order was wrong as well. I've been to this place in persons before covid and had a reasonable experience, and I thought the food was alright from what I remember. This review is in reference to my recent take out experience during covid times - long story short I ordered chicken fajitas for take out. I get home and realize I was provided with no tortillas, or any of the sides (rice and beans, sour cream, lettuce, tomatoes, queso fresco). So I call back into the store and after discussing with the front staff, I'm told that after conference with the manager they would be willing to offer me a free appetizer for my next visit. I inform the staff member that I live out of town and don't know if I'll be back anytime soon. I ask if she would be willing to remake or refund me the cost of the fajitas, since I didn't receive the meal properly. She puts the manager on the line, and I rudely receive the same information stating that they would be willing to offer me a free app. I tried to inform the manager about my situation. Instead of accepting any fault or attempting to make up for his restaurants mistake with my food, the manager became rather abrasive. I calmly attempted to ask for a refund at that point since I didn't receive a proper meal, and eventually the manager seemed to cave and said my refund would be processed in 3-5 days. I can't believe the lack of professionalism that was displayed by this manager. I hope that someone informs him about how to treat customers with some tact for the future. read more

Came to eat in February with my husband and friend (before the pandemic), and we were seated almost immediately. From there the service plummeted. We had to wait long stretches to even get anyone's attention. Every step was like pulling teeth.... ordering drinks..... ordering appetizers & food.... and getting the bill. It was tiresome that the staff was so unhelpful and so indifferent to customers. I will start with the positives: the ambiance is rustic and cute, and the drinks were good! We also really liked the guacamole dip and the carne asada fries. Nothing to write home about, but overall decent. We went with the Mexican Street Food part of the menu, but opted for some of the specialty tacos. The Surf & Turf, The Hot Surfer Chicken, Gringo Skirt Steak, Taco Tijuana & the Chimi Chimi Bang Bang. Again most of them were average at best, and as I got halfway through each taco, I wouldn't have ordered most of them again. The two specialty tacos I did like was the Taco Tijuana & The Chimi Chimi Bang Bang. I had the chicken street tacos they were average, guest 2 ordered pork street tacos that were dry, guest 3 ordered hot surfer chick and liked it. i've been to this specific cantina louie many times. as i do live in st.augustine. not once have they messed up but recently it has been going down hill. . Friday evening me and my boyfriend went to cantina for my only day off in 3 weeks. i get the Shredded Chicken Gravedigger nachos as i do every time. my boyfriend got the chicken enchiladas. halfway through the meal my boyfriend started to feel sick. he stopped eating and i initially thought it was just him not being able to eat at that moment. then i got almost all the way done with my nachos and my boyfriend is begging me to take him home. i take him home and he's throwing up like crazy. i don't feel anything yet, i go get my nails done. at the end of my appointment at the salon i start to feel sick. once i pay for my nails, i make it half way to my truck and i blow chunks in the parking lot. sat there for 10 minutes and decided to drive home. half way home i pulled over for the second time throwing up. I got home finally and me and my boyfriend are taking turns throwing up in the toilet. on top of that both of us have water coming out of our asses. did not sleep a single wink, and was throwing up ALL night long. i had to call out of work for 2 days. i called cantina louie and told them about this incident, but was told my meal could be comped if i came in with the reciept. i do not care about the money. me and my boyfriend cannot be the only people who ate the undercooked/ old shredded chicken and got sick like this. i'm not sure if they ever did anything about it, but this cantina louie has lost two loyal customers. read more

One of my co-workers told us it's the best Mexican restaurant that he's ever been to, which says a lot since he moved here from California where the ethnic food tends to be far more traditional then the Americanized we have here. The cheese quesadilla, which I got was good, full of cheese nice and thick which I have to give them credit! The nachos looked great with an abundance of chicken. If I was a carnivore there would have been a lot of good eating going on. Our waiter, Eden was very good. He maintained our ice tea refills without having to ask monitored our chips again without having to ask and he was very thorough in his explanation of the menu.
