It can be intimidating ordering from this restaurant as the staff are not pleasant appearing. They tend to cater more towards the clients who are regulars and those who speak Cantonese. But do persevere as the food is great! It is best you have a lot of people so you can try many different things. Weekends are very crowded and you may be seated with others to fill the tables. This makes for a more exciting experience as many times the other "veterans" will help you navigate through the menu. I only wished the staff were more pleasant and helpful. read more

The black pepper beef/ steak is the best dish here and a decent value at around $30. It was delicious and tender. The Peking duck is overpriced ($78 full, $40 half duck) and small portions. I wouldn't recommend it. It was ok but not great. A little bit dry. Lobster is kinda pricey too - $40 for one. We ordered one and it tasted ok just a little too pricey for the smallish lobster. The veggie dish my mom ordered was pretty good. Mushrooms with cabbage. Great flavor and portion size. The scallops dish was ok. It came with a lot of veggies for a good flavor but I guess I like my scallops a little bit seared by the wok. It's still a very good restaurant with good flavor and friendly waitstaff. Canton Palace consistently gets it right with their dishes. My friend has had her birthday here three years in a row which has become a tradition and the Chinese banquet style food is always top tier. Recently, however, I visited for dim sum and every single item my table picked out was top tier. I got many of the staples like the Har Gow (蝦餃): Delicate, translucent shrimp dumplings with a chewy tapioca flour wrapper, Siu Mai (燒賣): Open-faced dumplings typically filled with pork and shrimp. Char Siu Bao (叉燒包): Baked buns filled with sweet, savory, BBQ pork. It's evident that there is great attention to detail for each dish, the wrappers for each dish are flavorful and have a nice elasticity, not too soft or mushy and not hard - what Asians like to call QQ. And the insides were each bursting with flavor. Inside the restaurant, you will see the traditional lazy Susan tables outfitted with clean white table cloths. It's not ornate but it is thoughtfully decorated. In each of the rooms you can see large fish tanks with all kinds of fish & shellfish, so you can be sure any seafood you pick out is as fresh as possible. The service is what you would expect from any traditional dim sum location with each server dressed in the traditional button-down and vest. There's no menus during dim-sum hour, the servers come out fast and furious with their carts with all the small dishes on them and you decide based on whether you like what you see or not. Then you have to be decisive on which dishes to take. It's recommended to have someone in your party with experience else it could feel overwhelming but it's the way it's done! I landed here for my friend's daughter's big event, and let me tell you finding parking was like playing hide-and-seek with asphalt. Spoiler: the asphalt usually wins. The place itself is tucked into a tiny strip mall, and once you finally get inside, it splits into two worlds: one side casual dining, the other side party central. My friend's setup for the event was gorgeous... tables dressed up with wine bottles, green tea, and those classic red-dyed eggs. Bonus points for the wet towelettes at every table. Practical and thoughtful.. my inner neat freak applauded. Now, onto the food... my Achilles heel. I'm a vegetarian, which in a Chinese restaurant often means "you get tofu and you'll like it." My friend did her best, picking out mapo tofu and some mushroom noodles for me. The tofu? Imagine a block of tofu doing laps in a kiddie pool of sauce.. bland and aimless, until I rescued it with chili oil and some plain rice. The noodles fared better, but again, needed the chili oil booster shot. My carnivorous comrades, however, were feasting like emperors on squid, lobster, crab rice, and fish... faces lit up with joy while I chewed politely and got drunk on wine. So here's the thing: if you're vegetarian, brace yourself to leave hungrier than when you came. The event itself? Beautiful. The food (at least for me)? Two stars. Had a very satisfying meal here! Our first time too and im happy we were able to have a good dining experience! (fyi: also got lucky with street parking. Just one of those good days). we came in on a saturday at 11:30AM and we got seated right away even though it was already getting full inside. There was a good amount of dimsum carts walking by so it didnt take too long to get orders in. We loved the soup dumplings, siu mai and shrimp hakaw. o tried something new as well which was a shrimp and chive(or leek?) dumpling and enjoyed that too! honestly everything we got that day was delicious and I appreciate that service was friendly. I had a really amazing experience at Canton Palace. I dined there for a friend's celebration, so it was an excellent crash course on Cantonese cuisine. With the extensive menu and items served family-style, I was able to take a deep dive into all of the intricacies of the flavors and dishes. We had a wide array of dishes that were shared by my table. My favorites were jellyfish, steamed fish with herbs, fried pork pieces, crab rice, sautéed beans and noodles. Most, if not all, were items that I never had before and it was incredible to enjoy traditional Cantonese dishes. Everything tasted fantastic and our servers were excellent. I was absolutely stuffed but still made room for the bean soup dessert which was very tasty. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed all of the food and absolutely recommend this restaurant! This is a second time having lunch in this Restaurant after the trip to Duke Farm. We order dim sum and two lunch special. One is chicken with bitter melon. The other one is spicy salted pork chop. The soup is abalone and Cordyceps flowers stew. All are done properly and tasty. Never had this particular herbal soup in lunch special. The service is decent. My party of 4 visited on a Saturday around 12pm, and were seated promptly. The restaurant was not too busy for weekend dim sum service. As soon as we were seated, quite a few dim sum servers came to our table with a variety of dim sum options. We enjoyed all the dim sum we ordered and they all tasted fresh. The dim sum is a bit more expensive compared to other options in central Jersey. We've been visiting Canton Palace for many years, but decided to make a post review finally. This is probably the best quality and most authentic dim sum in the area. The service is on the fast side, but naturally understandable because it's a dim sum spot so unfortunately, it's fast service but equally fast tables. Something not done here, but in more traditional dim sum places in Hong Kong you will share tables because it's always packed and people are flying in and out. We tend to get a wide variety of the cart foods, including the shrimp, dumplings, chicken feet, etc. everything is fresh and tasty. For the larger table dishes, recommend getting the beef chow fun, salted fish chicken fried rice and if you're feeling decadent, you can order ahead for a king crab prepared in multiple styles. Stopped by for dinner as we'd only ever been for dim sum! Our dishes were generous portions but I would've loved to see more flavor for the shrimp sauce and a touch more curry powder in the noodles. The good was the service and ambiance. Staff were attentive and there was a high attention to detail (frequent plate exchanges for the messy items). A good number of tables with the lazy Susan for dim sum or family style dinner. The food was a solid 'ok' in that the presentation was good but the flavor seemed to fall flat. Spicy dishes were mild and the coconut taro casserole we were warned it was coconut flavor to find the coconut flavor very mild and overpowered by the sausage and pumpkin. Canton Palace is out to go place for Cantonese food in NJ. The menu has a wide variety of dishes to pick from, staff is friendly, and service is good. We have tried both Dim Sum and dinner and both are good. The ambiance is like most Chinese restaurants, nothing fancy but the place is clean. The restaurant does not have its own parking but if you are willing to walk a little parking will not be an issue. Highly recommend that you drop in if you are in the Somerville area. read more

For no. Chinese speaking and those without culinary understanding of the food, it will prove difficult to communicate as we quickly found out. We stay for the a round of appetizers--- soup dumplings which were good but very little broth in each dumpling. We also had the Shumai and was disappointed in how large and tough they were. Not the style of shumai we are accustomed to. When we tried asking some questions about a few dish items is where we ran into trouble and we didn't exactly feel welcomed, more rushed than anything. I had to slow them down so as not to take all our plates as we were eating the appetizers. Had to ask for water, never wee served any tea. Again not best choice unless you understand and are wiling to pay very very high prices. read more

This is our go to place when we visit my mom. Came here tonight for her birthday and also brought whole family here over Christmas. Service is super fast, food is authentic! We've been coming here for years. Our favorites include salted fish, eggplant and chicken casserole, home style grouper with green beans. We always go home satisfied, full and happy! This was a large location with lots of tables and a large menu. They had lots of intriguing choices along with "American options" too. The service was not bad, and the food came out in a timely manner. For appetizers, the soup dumplings ($7.95), scallion pancake ($7.95), and assorted dim sum ($18.95) was ordered. There were four soup dumplings to an order, and they were the best dish of the night. The dumpling had a nice texture while the filing comprised of pork and soup was tremendous. The scallion pancake was solid. Some pieces were a little tougher than I would have liked, but the flavor was there. I would have liked to have seen better consistency on the texture. It did go nicely with the sauce that was present. The assorted dim sum had a few different options such as shumai and other types of dumplings. All of these were very solid. They were filled with shrimp I believe. Some also had greens present. I would have liked to see more variety, but they all tasted good. For an entrée, the crispy seafood roll ($16.95) and shredded pork with Chinese greens ($17.95) were ordered. The seafood roll was mistakenly ordered as the waiter came back asking if that was what I ordered after taking our order and I knowingly just said yes not knowing I went with another item so unfortunately that was my mistake and I suffered. The roll was okay at best. It was just fried with a variety of seafood stuffed inside. It also came with a Japanese mayonnaise I believe. The pork was not that great either. It did not have a ton of flavor. The greens were the best part of the dish, but that was not saying much. Would I go back? Probably. read more

Very spacious restaurant, which opened on a Friday at 11am. We were first in and it wasn't very busy, they had dimsum but not in carts, you ordered from the menu. Lunch menu - we tried the Peking Pork Chop which was crispy and sweet. Not as good as the one we had at Confucius in Jersey City back in the day, but brought some hint of that rich, sweet savory flavor. Came with rice and a hot & sour soup that was a lot of soup w/ corn starch but too sour for me, not enough white pepper. Dimsum we tried was generally ok but very bland, though expensive compared to getting it at Jing Fong in the city. Ginger tripe was ok, and the chicken feet was more bland. Shrimp rice noodle - the rice noodle was off, I think undercooked. The BBQ pork steamed buns were bland inside (not enough BBQ flavor). The leek and pork bun (dumpling) was ok but far too thick of a bun (not enough filling). Overall had more flavorful dimsum elsewhere, maybe it's better on the weekend with the carts? (maybe the first set out is too steamed?) Street or muni lot parking. read more

The exterior fried to a satisfying crisp bite. it's a fried pillowy bite, but crisp, poignantly seasoned, and adorned with deep fried green onions and peppers for an added kick. One of the pricier Chinese restaurants in the area. My go-to usually is House of Wong but I live closer here so on lazy days I tend to just go here. The food is good and it feels less oilier which is nice. The beef is better quality than most places and I'm not just eating straight fat, which is nice. I went back last week and was surprised to see that they had remodeled the space and opened up a large dining area in the back! I'm excited for them to serve more people! I could eat 2 orders of turnip cakes by myself but I held back to let the rest of my family try some Sauteed Silver Anchovy: fried anchovies are now my favorite! They were super crispy and paired so well with the Chinese chives and crunchy white vege ( not sure what it was but it was delicious!) Pecking ribs: I've loved this dish all my life and again these hot the spot. These are Sweet and tangy! Steamed chicken ginger and scallion: this is a classic dish that I always order if I can find it on the menu. The chicken was a bit too salty for me but maybe it's because I didn't have a bite with rice. I love that this dish is so simple and lets the chicken flavor shine! We've tried a lot of dim sum in the area and this one was not one of our favorites. The food isn't bad by any means, but you can get better, more flavorful dim sum at a better price elsewhere. The stuffed eggplant was fairly greasy and the shrimp filling was seasoned enough. The shrimp spring rolls were small without a lot of spring. It was more crispy wrapper than anything. The rice rolls were pretty decent, but again the sauce lacked flavor. Id prefer to head to Edison and hit up one of the spots in that area. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. read more

Brought my parents here for dinner and they loved the food. Also very toddler friendly. There were live fishes, lobsters, and crab to keep them entertain before the food came out. Food also came out pretty quick. Would come back to try dim sum. Can't remember all the dishes we order, but the crab fried rice was under whelming and the dessert at the very end, the red bean soup, was watered down and lacked flavor. Not only are their dim sum items good but so are the dinner items. It just tastes a lot less greasy than other Chinese restaurants and each menu item is just packed with flavor - their fried rice is SO good! Prices are reasonable and the service is pretty good. For dim sum items I recommend the: Shrimp Dumplings, Siu Mai (Pork Dumpling), Steamed Roast Pork Bun, Turnip Cake, Shrimp Fun Noodle, Mini Sweet Rice with Shrimp and Pork. When my friend wanted to meet for dim sum, this is where I always made the reservation. I posted a review before but I felt it's important to update b/c my experience was just excellent this time! The dim sums seem even more delicious than before and not greasy at all. They used the square steamers instead of the round ones, really cute and fresh. The wait staff was professional and friendly as usual, and they changed our plates a couple times! If you are in central jersey area, you should really try this place.
