My shih tzu always a little frightened before seeing the vet.
Michelle T.

I have been taking my shih tzu here over the past year. Dr. Barrett has provided excellent care for my dog. The office is fairly small, I appreciated the staff following all COVID precautions, such as enforcement of facial coverings and no overbooking. Every time I went to the office, I was the only one there, so the office itself was never overcrowded. The first time I visited Dr. Barrett, he diagnosed my shih tzu with canine atopic dermatitis. I appreciated the time spent he had educating me about the disease, answering all my questions and discussing what we can do to help my little guy get to a better place. He asked what products I have used to clean out his ears and together we reviewed the product labeling online to verify if the ingredients were problematic for my dog. He never tried to push or sell his products in house. He said what I have is fine for now and if I would like to buy more, he does sell something there. I appreciated his honesty. After strictly following his diet recommendations and prescribed medication, my shih tzu's skin has subsided and eventually resolved. Many months later, I noticed my shih tzu barely being able to walk. Dr. Barrett to the rescue. I was able to get an appointment immediately and he was diagnosed with intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), I was devastated. Again, I never felt rushed, he took the time to educate me about the disease and developed a treatment plan so that I can avoid the condition from getting worse. I came back the next day, he took x-rays and my dog stayed overnight. Dr. Barrett along with his staff called me to provide updates throughout his time there. The next day I picked him up, followed all the instructions provided and within weeks, my little shih tzu was back to normal. My family is forever grateful for his guidance. I tried doing my own research and asked Dr. Barrett if I should buy vitamins and a back brace, etc. and he said don't waste your money, you don't need it. Based on my own personal experience, I would highly recommend Dr. Barrett. He has done wonders for my dog and I will continue to take him there for all of his needs.

Dr. Barrett and Mary were superb at caring for our precious little Charlie. He is on the mend healing very well from his neutered surgery. He is back to being adventurous again. Dr. Barrett and Mary were very nice and kind people.

Our family would like to extend our gratitude and love to Canyon veterinarian hospital, Dr. Barrett and his entire staff for always showing such compassion, love and understanding when it came to our fur baby Ginger. Dr. Barrett always took in consideration of Ginger's age and her health conditions while evaluating her over the years. He was never quick to over medicate, over charge or recommended excessive procedures that were unnecessary for Ginger. Dr. Barrett always took the time to explain the pros and cons when it came to making decisions regarding Ginger's health care. When Ginger became very sick and Dr. Barrett couldn't do much more for her we knew it was time for us to help her cross the rainbow. Dr. Barrett's staff, Mary, Donna & Pamela were amazing and compassionate during this difficult time. They were very helpful & gave us the referrals to where we could bring Ginger to crosse the rainbow in peace. Dr. Barrett does not do cremation at his office, so it was very helpful to have the referrals. We chose VEG SAN RAMON. They were amazing as well. Run free Ginger

Barrett did a super job on Trixe, and after 3 visits (it actually only took one) if someone asks me where to go?

It's been 8 years since I last stepped foot in Groveway Pet Hospital. My last experience with them…read moreleft me with an extremely bad taste in my mouth, so much so that I swore I'd never go back to them. However, my big boy Chomper is 12+, and last January I noticed he was really struggling to do normal things. I changed his routine and started hand-making his food, and he instantly got better. But having had another dog who was the same mixed breed and who showed the same signs towards the end of life, I knew Chomper's time was limited. Then last week he had a bad morning, and seeing he was in pain, I relented and called Groveway hoping that they'd just prescribe him some medication for pain management. I was able to bring him in that same day, and of course the first thing he does is urinate all over their waiting room floor like he had never whizzed in his life (and I JUST let him relieve himself outside beforehand). I apologized and offered to clean it up, but the receiption staff and another staff member quickly began to clean it up without hesitation and reassured me that it was ok. We entered into the examination room, and from the very beginning vet tech Stella was kind, polite and asked poignant quesitons. Soon after Dr. Powell came in, and she was equally kind, polite and wanting to help my boy. Dr. Powell was wonderful - she was compassionate and at the same time willing to have the difficult conversations. We decided on bloodwork that would take about 30 mins or so. Needing a urine sample, Stella escorted us outside to the back area with room to roam and a bench to sit at. After getting the sample, Stella made every effort to make sure my boy was comfortable - she invited us to stay in the backyard to enjoy the fresh air and sun, she brought out a blanket for Chompet to lie on, and she brought both of us water as well. Needless to say, after my last experience with Groveway, I was hesitant to contact them thinking that they might somehow try to hustle me again. I am so glad that I called them. The staff there were nothing but professional and courteous. Stella was accommodating and loved on my boy like he was her own dog. And Dr. Powell's compassion and willingness to help was nothing short of amazing. We didn't get the results we wanted, and that's just part of a dog getting old. But we have another checkup scheduled in a month, and I'm looking forward to the staff at Groveway spoling my Chomper again.

From scheduling the appointment to the consultation, I experienced excellent care. Their prices are also reasonable, and the clinic offered options within my budget, especially since I don't have pet insurance. The clinic is very clean, and hygiene standards are maintained despite their busy schedule. Thanks to Dr. Powell, technician Stella, and the front desk staff for their exceptional service.

We were looking for a new vet for my dog since moving to Castro Valley. Our old vet had a small…read moreoffice and was always booked out weeks and weeks in advance. After looking extensively at reviews, I ended up getting an appointment here with Dr. Alyssa Ma! We were coming in with concerns for some bumps and a mass on my dog's eye. My sister and I are always pretty careful when it comes to coming to the vet because my dog is extremely reactive to other animals, which makes it hard for us to go to areas with other animals. The front desk staff and vet techs are incredibly kind and accommodating with our request to hide other animals when our dog comes in or go in through the side or back. Our first visit went really well and with my previous experience at our previous vet, I was expecting the bill to be extremely costly.... Dr. Ma did the consultation (i believe it was $80), tested 6 bumps and cut his nails and it was around ~$300 total. We actually came in wanting to test 5 but she saw another one while taking a look at the others and tested that as well. I was expecting to be charged for each bump they test, but surprisingly it was all just under one cost. She told us the results right away. For the mass on my dogs eye, she recommended a few options, and we went with the surgical route. She gave me an estimate of each item/test/medication/procedure to be done to my dog and I was able to pick what I wanted and the cost would update based on that. Everything from pricing, procedures, etc were transparent and reasonable. We were also able to schedule his surgery pretty soon after that initial consultation! When we picked my dog up from surgery, I was expecting him to be on the cone, but he came out without it and they told us he was really good so they didn't put the cone on for now. At home, he recovered well without using the cone! :D We had another visit recently because my dog got in a tussle with a skunk and got all scratched up on his face!!! We called a ton of emergency vets and they were either too far or couldn't take him. I called Eden at around 8:30 am on a Friday and even though they were booked for the day, they got me on a waitlist and called me at around 2:00 pm to let me know they had a cancellation and that they would be able to take us at 4:00 pm. Honestly, just amazing customer service from the team at Eden. They are incredibly efficient and understanding. The pricing is very reasonable and they are very transparent. My dog also loves it here cos Dr. Ma and the techs who worked with us always talk to him sweetly and gives him a lot of pets.

The barrier to entry was low so we checked it out and we're glad we did! Our vet was Dr. Alyssa Ma and our tech was Julian. They were kind, quick, yet professional. Dr. Ma listened to our concerns and offered treatments that aligned with what we expected. The cost seemed reasonable: we had a vet visit ($80), annual vaccinations ($240) and prescriptions ($50). Overall a good experience and we would come back to bring our cat in and for any continued care.

Dr. Harper is very professional, personable, honest, transparent, and communicative. Finding a trustworthy vet for a rabbit is not easy, and requires lots of research to find the right one. That being said, I really do trust Dr. Harper and his vet team. Today I brought my rabbit in for X-rays because I was concerned he may be arthritic. This examination isn't as straightforward as it would be for a dog or cat, and it involves sedation. Upon arrival, the nurse, Sav, walked me through all my questions upon drop off. I was transparent about my worries around sedation, and she was very honest based on her extensive anesthesiology expertise and experience-- not hiding the fact that there is indeed risk involved because he's a rabbit. Because we determined there's an alternative path from xray + sedation, we then decided to change my appointment type and just try out anti inflammatory medication (instead of jumping right into an xray). The conversation alone with Sav was incredibly helpful and insightful; she helped me make a more informed decision on what services I felt to be most appropriate for my bun and took her time going in-depth on explanations. I always come to my appointments with a bullet list of questions and each time, I really appreciate the doctor and nurses careful attention to answering them. They really take their time explaining everything, and I never feel pushed or coerced into anything I don't want for my rabbit. Again, the level of communication, patience, and transparency coupled with the teams expertise and experience really makes them stand out. Uncle Waffles and I appreciate HVH a [waffle] lot, thank you guys!
