So, so happy that we found this hospital earlier in 2023 and I can't believe it's taken so long for me to write this review. We have had the best experience with Dr. Harper and his team. Feeling like your vet really cares about your animal is a blessing. My dog, Delilah, has been a patient here for a while now and we have had routine visits, surgeries to remove masses, ear cleaning, teeth cleaning, and check ups here and there. Every time, we've felt comfortable and taken care of. My dog has bad anxiety being in any veterinary hospitals, but she has really warmed up to Hayward Vet Hospital after their constant, thoughtful approaches with her. I've been taking my rabbit, uncle waffles, to Dr. Harper for three years now (ever since I adopted my old man). Dr. Harper is very professional, personable, honest, transparent, and communicative. Finding a trustworthy vet for a rabbit is not easy, and requires lots of research to find the right one. That being said, I really do trust Dr. Harper and his vet team. Today I brought my rabbit in for X-rays because I was concerned he may be arthritic. This examination isn't as straightforward as it would be for a dog or cat, and it involves sedation. Upon arrival, the nurse, Sav, walked me through all my questions upon drop off. I was transparent about my worries around sedation, and she was very honest based on her extensive anesthesiology expertise and experience-- not hiding the fact that there is indeed risk involved because he's a rabbit. Because we determined there's an alternative path from xray + sedation, we then decided to change my appointment type and just try out anti inflammatory medication (instead of jumping right into an xray). The conversation alone with Sav was incredibly helpful and insightful; she helped me make a more informed decision on what services I felt to be most appropriate for my bun and took her time going in-depth on explanations. I always come to my appointments with a bullet list of questions and each time, I really appreciate the doctor and nurses careful attention to answering them. They really take their time explaining everything, and I never feel pushed or coerced into anything I don't want for my rabbit. Again, the level of communication, patience, and transparency coupled with the teams expertise and experience really makes them stand out. She was so kind to my spoiled dog Corrado. Then, Dr. Harper came in and SAT ON THE FLOOR with my dog Corrado. They vaccinated him, recommended dental work and much more. They really care about your pets. My guinea pig died and Dr. Harper called me. And then there's THIS...a little over a year ago I brought my dog in for euthanizing. Honey (7 month old rabbit) did not survive her spay procedure yesterday. Dr. Harvey told me she suffered an adverse reaction to the anesthesia and stopped breathing. He said they tried their best to help her. I'm sure they tried to do what they could. That being said, I wish I never went ahead with the spay procedure. I thought I was giving her a better, healthier, and longer life. But I was wrong. Our family is completely heartbroken. My sons are devastated. We lost our baby. Final and last review - 2 stars. We unfortunately transferred care after I called about my dear male dog having a limp and the next available date offered to me was 2 months out. 2 MONTHS OUT. How ridiculous. Now, we have transferred to a vet who has solved my dog's limp the same day that I called, and has solved my other dog's skin condition with the prescription of a certain medicine. This latter dog (the female) has been suffering from the skin condition for a long time, ~2 years. From HVH, we were offered antibiotics and a steroid shot. We were consistent with that but she never improved. Now, after transferring care, her skin condition has completely disappeared and they never offered shots. I'm shocked. Big ups to Brittany, Dr. Harper, and Carlos for all of the wonderful care over the past two years, but I'm still reeling at the fact that we were offered such a long time away with no mention of Urgent Care or an earlier appointment. Basically no help. The person on the phone (it was a female voice) was very dull. "Sorry, that's our earliest opening for Claus." I called back in November, they offered me end of January. Truly in disbelief. I transferred care the same day. Who talked to me on the phone that day and caused us to leave? We'll never know... read more

About a month ago my chinchilla suddenly start to drool after having him for 13 years, it was the first time he ever had health issue that affected his eating. I was able to find this place just down the road from my house that can see an exotic animal! Especially a 14 years old chin! Dr Harper and his entire team was very caring and helpful in terms of finding out the issue and a resolution for my old little prince. Absolutely unacceptable. Their lunch break is from 1-2 PM, and I ran there during an emergency because my puppy was choking. I arrived at 12:33 PM, well before lunch, and was told the doctor had already left and they were going to lunch soon, so they couldn't help my puppy. No urgency, no compassion, nothing just a printout of other clinics and sent me away. I came in scared and desperate for help, and they refused to even take a quick look. I had a hard time finding a vet that would accept new clients, but Hayward Veterinary Hospital got back to me quickly and was very communicative throughout the process. My Olde English Bulldog had been dealing with ear issues for about two months, and I suspected an infection. They were able to see him, clean his ears, and prescribe antibiotics. When we returned for a follow-up a week later, they said he was looking good, and the treatment seemed to be working! The total cost was $412; $70 for the deposit and $342 for the visit, cleaning, and medication. While vet care can be pricey, I appreciated their responsiveness and the quality of care my dog received. read more

I visited this hospital last year and this year for my rabbits. The doctors and nurses are always good. However, the front desk lady, a 1 star. This 1 star is to her and not the hospital and not the doctors and not the nurses. I brought my 2 rabbits to have an annual exam and the hospital offered a cleaning service which I accepted. Total for 2 rabbits exam and sanitary fees are $341.62. During the cleaning, one of my rabbits got a wound due to fur pulled off the skin on scrotum. The doctor and nurse came over to talk to me and told me about the medicine and procedure and I could feel their sincerity. Honestly, I clean my rabbit before but thinking about if it goes thru the hospital and may be better but getting wound is totally unexpected. When the time I checked out, we first scheduled the next visit for my rabbit. Then, the front desk lady went over the with additional the medicine and antibiotic cost $75.37. My rabbit already suffered the pain and I asked nicely to the front desk whether it can be a discount for the medicine because I don't expect that cost for the medicine. Do you know what she said. She raised her voice and said "What?" "Are you kidding me? You thought we hurt your rabbit? Who said that we guarantee your pet will not be hurt during cleaning?" I said "Yes, I don't know how you guys clean. Your people cleaned my rabbit and hurted him." The front desk lady has cold hear and made me very sad and almost cry due to her cruelty. Then, she said did I want to talk to the doctor or to her further. With that kind of person, who wants to talk to you. I said "No". I just want to pay the bill and said if I know it will have a chance for you guys to clean my rabbit, I would not take that service. Then, she said ok, I will cancel your future appointment. She didn't advice me and just cancel my appointment. She has a bigger right than every one in the hospital. I wish the owner able to read this message. With that kind of attitude, who wants to deal with you (front desk lady). However, she covered her unprofessional manner, she wrote the below message in my report. What a big liar. read more

What an amazing experience. Night and day difference from my previous Vet and I'm looking forward to being a forever customer. Customer Service here is TOP NOTCH -- Everyone is very friendly. Even the team members that aren't working directly with you. We were greeted by literally everyone, felt like a long time customer, and was ensured every step of the way through every nook and cranny. My puppy just turned 3 months and so I'm still learning what works best for him and I. And this establishment did not force any vaccines or treatments onto him. VERY refreshing. Doctor Harper is not only professional, but sociable and witty. Unlike the few Vets I've been to, his natural relatability and being able to make recommendations on his own experiences was what sold me. I initially turned down the lepto vaccine but after Doctor Harper's explanation, it made sense. My parents live near a creek and always complain of "big dogs" climbing into their trash can and the "stink animal" crawling through their yard (they don't have them in Vietnam). Since I visit fairly often, my hypochondriac self could never be too sure. Everything was done in a timely manner, not a long wait, and was setting up my next appointment before I knew it. For context: I've had my little fur baby for ~90 days. As a new (and anxious) pet owner, the HVH team has patiently answered all my questions and helped alleviate my concerns. I've had to take my young rescue cat to HVH five times within last three months for routine/expected care. One of the visits was due to an issue my cat created a week after being spayed. They set clear expectations to have me send in a photo and promptly followed up to make sure my cat could be seen the next day. Love my first experience here!!! My boy Campeón had an ear infection for almost a year :( Other vet clinic told me to just keep putting drops in the ear and if necessary to remove the hair, but it would be convenient to sedate my dog so he couldn't fell any pain; I thought it was a bit excessive and he didn't care to mention the risks of sedating. We decided to stop going there and switch to Hayward vet. It took a bout 3 weeks to resolve the problem, it was bad, but they received my pups and start treatment right away, they flush the ear, take some scans (other place didn't offer that) and remove the hair without being sedated!!!! They showed me how to clean the ears, gave some medicines and since then his ears are very clean and hadn't have any problems. HVH has been amazing. This review is a few months late. I can say that my Pomeranians spend more time at the ER and their vet than I have spent with my doctor in the last decade. A good vet is very important to me. I understand we are still dealing with Covid but I am glad they allow the owner in the facility along with their pet. Not to mention the facility is clean and they have gone the extra mile to make everything perfect. A little toy box for the pets in the exam room and I was even offered water while I waited. Dr. Harper and his staff are great. They really provide the service you hope to get when stressed and worried about a fur child. They take the time to ensure everything is explained in detail down to the charges which was refreshing. Dr. Harper even does the dental cleanings which was great because we always had to go outside of our vet or wait a ridiculous amount of time to get on the books. He did an amazing job with Kuki and Ka'ili. Im glad I haven't had to see him in months, but know if something happens that my fur children are in good hands. read more

TLDR: My human shy dog is treated with such patience, care and love, I am very happy. We have been going here since 2022, and Dr. Keith Harper is awesome! My rescue love - Phoebe, is stranger human shy. So leaving her with a vet or groomer makes her extremely anxious. She is a sweetheart, so she won't bark or be aggressive, she will just end up shivering, and being stiff. But over here, the vets, technician and all of staff gets that, and handles her with such gentleness, care that it fills my heart. They also allows me to be with her in the room for all visits, and for most of her treatment, so that Phoebe feels safe having me around her. They try to get acquainted with her and calm her down, before taking any steps or treatment. All of Phoebe's health issues were treated in right way, and what I love the most is - they hear me out, all of what I have to say about Phoebe's concerns, come up with treatment plans, options, explains what plans works how, and then ultimately let me decide how I want to proceed. I also appreciate that when I call them with a health issue, they recommend some at home solution, when applicable, and observe before having a need to visit, which is really kind. My 16 year old dog,active, attentive dog on Monday, played with his toys had a wellness check on Tuesday where Dr. Harper insisted he had an ear infection when I knew his ears were not bothering him, had his blood drawn for a senior panel, and two vaccines... he returned a different dog... he could barely walk, continued shaking his head, obviously uncomfortable with the treatment but basically unresponsive. When I said I did not want anything done to his ears, the doctor responded,"how would you feel if you had an ear infection and nobody did anything!" The next day my dog was screaming in pain and could not sleep for more than a half hour at a time. I had to put him to sleep. Please don't bring your animal here. read more

We specifically asked for a partial caudectomy, but their team went ahead and did something else without checking with us first. When we brought it up, the manager acted like we didn't understand what we were asking for even though we clearly explained it using the correct terminology from the start. A quick phone call to update us on the change would've been so simple, but instead they made a major decision about our pet without asking. The partial refund they offered doesn't fix the fact that we never gave consent for what was actually done. We've since switched to a new vet who agreed the lack of transparency was unacceptable. Honestly, we should've never been charged at all for a procedure we didn't agree to. We definitely will not be coming back we're in better hands, good riddance! I was excited to bring my Rottweiler to HVH after reading previous positive reviews. I had scheduled the appointment weeks in advance, so I was shocked and frustrated when I arrived on the day of my dog's appointment only to be told it was canceled due to a lack of deposit payment. No one had informed me of the cancellation before my arrival, despite receiving a confirmation call just days prior. During that call, no mention was made of the deposit issue. The front desk staff was rude and unhelpful, and I found the tone of the conversation unprofessional. Better communication would have been appreciated, as I ended up wasting both time and gas for an appointment I wasn't even aware had been canceled. My 6.5-year-old Rankins dragon was having mobility issues, and although I had taken him to another specialist earlier in the week (where he was treated for a mild calcium deficiency) his symptoms got worse and he really seemed to be struggling. After frantically searching for a reptile specialist who could see him ASAP on a Friday, i was relieved to find Dr. Harper AND that he could see my little Rango within an hour. First of all, Dr. Haper is the first vet I've seen who immediately identified Rango as a Rankins dragon (they aren't super common) - every other vet I've taken him to initially thought he was a baby bearded dragon until I said otherwise. In addition, I learned the sad fact that Rankins don't live as long as their larger bearded relatives. While bummed to learn this news, at least I am now aware that he's in his geriatric years and can ensure I'm doing everything he needs to enjoy his "leisure era." Dr. Harper's X-ray showed us that Rango has arthritis on his skeleton, so we now have some pain meds to help Rango be more comfortable. In addition, the bloodwork did, indeed, show he needs more calcium so we will be taking additional doses to help with that well. I'm THRILLED to say that Rango has been doing SO much better since seeing Dr. Harper - he's moving around more, eating like a pig, and is back to being his happy little self, running over to greet me every morning. I know he's in his golden years and I'm gonna have to be super careful to ensure he's getting enough calcium, but I happy to know that we have time left together, and - most important - that he's comfortable. I really appreciate Dr. Harper's expertise and we'll definitely be seeing him going forward. Best care we've ever had! Thank you to Dr. Harper and the wonderful staff at Hayward Vet. This review is long overdue! My senior dog has had the same vet since he was a puppy, so I was a little scared to find a new vet when we moved. Honestly, I saw that the doctor was someone I was familiar with from years ago and I remember them being so compassionate and kind so I really felt like I could trust HVH. Plus, the reviews here are outstanding. Now I understand why. Although I didn't get to work with that doc, our first appt went stellar with Dr. Stanton. Everyone who saw my dog that day was so efficient, but incredibly thorough. And they were so patient with my questions (I had a bunch). I had a recent concern about my dog's kidneys and my previous vet didn't think it was too big a deal. The first time we met Dr. Stanton, however, he validated my feelings. Without me mentioning it, he suggested to move my dog to a more kidney friendly diet and we both reviewed the protein in my dog's food (yes, I brought a bag of all his meds and food, lol). All the staff have been amazing and patient with my questions via email, phone, and in person-- every time. And all of our appointments have been as wonderful as the first so far. If I could give a -5 star I would. It has taken me some time to sit down and write this review without hatred but I still cannot. About a month and a half ago my bird had a accident and was bleeding. If you know anything about birds any cut even for nails that makes them bleed can be deadly. My bird was actively bleeding and the nearest emergency vet hospital was 45 minutes away versus them who were 10. We called them about 5:15 PM and they close at 6. When we talked to the receptionist she said o I'm sorry, the doctor is just about to leave for the day. I would totally understand if the doctor wasn't there at all but the doctor was still there! If they cared about animals like they say they do they would of taken him in! So instead it took us an hour to get to the San Ramon VEG and they took us to the back right away and evaluated him. That's how you treat an emergency. Unfortunately there is not a lot of vets near by that see birds so it was the only other option. I should also add, Hayward vet has seen him for a check up before. So it's not just a new patient either. My family has had other bad experiences with this place as well but that's not my story to tell, it's just a heads up. So thankful I found this place. Found them on yelp. Checked out their website good information and you have the ability to register owner and pet online prior to going in. Called and made an appointment was able to get in within a weem. Brought my German Shepherd in to have his ear snd skin checked out. The staff made us feel welcomed and very comfortable. Carlos was super knowledgeable and did a phenomenal job doing as much of the upfront work before out appointment. My dog was scared to walk on the floor Carlos brought us a blanket so he didn't have to slip or slide. Of course when we got there my dog started breathing heavy like he hadn't drank water all day smh Carlos brought us a water bowl! Carlos talked with us about our concerns, and put together preliminary treatment plan walked me throuhh what was required and optional services/vaccines he did a great job working the phone and room as other patients arrived. Dr. Harper came out and introduced himself to is and Jimbo (German Shepherd). You can tell Dr. Harper genuinely loves what he does and has a passion for it. Dr. Harper examined Jimbo reviewed the treatment plan, adjusted the plan as needed. He gave me options I can buy the medicine from him or online and the difference between the two (I decided to get everything through him). We agreed on the treatment plan Jimbo was brought to the back for his vaccines. A few minutes later he was out with a bag of medicine to treat his ear and itchy skin. The pricing was very reasonable. They did not try to over sell or upsell and products. I have found our new furbaby doctor. This will be the only place I bring any if our pets going forward. Time for my annual review for Dr. Harper and HVH! As I've endorsed for the previous 2 years, Dr. Harper remains the absolute best veterinarian I could trust to oversee my 3 dogs' care. Apart from our routine care and annual physicals, we had a few non-wellness appointments this year. Most recently, in October, we went through a bit of a medical mystery for the entire month with our corgi Stitch, who fell quite ill. We were an emotional WRECK, and long story short: it was an autoimmune disorder (strangles), which is pretty rare for a dog his age (1.5 yrs). Stitchy ended up with a huge huge abscess and enlarged submandibular lymph nodes that eventually ruptured. It was oozing for days and even led to a literal subcutaneous hole on Stitch's neck. Based off his collective symptoms, it could have been a much worse diagnosis but I'm so glad we were able to determine what was going on and promptly treat it. Dr. Harper and Brittany were our biggest advocates and really went above and beyond for my little furbaby. Dr. Harper did extensive research to try and address various differential diagnoses. When I inquired about running certain tests that I came across on Dr. Google (haha), Dr. H was honest with me about whether or not he thought they would be necessary, and he never tried to upsell any of their services. They were very considerate of our financial situation and as usual, they always provided quotes for full transparency before rendering services. They stayed engaged in Stitch's process through every symptom, challenge, and appointment. They frequently checked in with us to address any observed changes and were readily accessible and responsive to my calls, emails, and messages. The coordination of care and continuity of services were impeccable; Dr. H supported us with OakVet ER and East Bay Sonography and he will 10000% without a doubt do his very best to ensure your pets get the care they need and deserve. I love the entire staff there that directly supported us through this ordeal - though I must specifically extend my appreciations to Dr. Harper, Brittany, Dr. Stanton, Candice, Candy, Carlos, Alora, Mayra, and Yvonne - all who were directly involved in Stitch's treatment and who are quite familiar with me and my pups by now lol. After multiple rounds of antibiotics and steroids, Stitch has practically made a full recovery, and I'm so glad I have such a reputable, reliable, and honest vet team.
