I wanted to inject some new some life into my 10+ year Ikea sofa by replacing the foam, and after some searching I discovered that Capital City Upholstery not only supplies foam, they'll also cut and install it for you! I made the drive down and the gentlemen who worked there asked me what I was looking for in terms of comfort then walked me through my options. I made my selections and two days later the cushions were ready for pickup. My sofa feels brand new and so much more comfortable than it was before that I can't believe I didn't think to do this sooner. And the cost of getting foam for all four cushions was *very* affordable, especially when compared to what it would have cost to get the work done by one of the upholstery stores in town. Long story short, this was one of the best 20 mile trips I made! I found out about Capital City Upholstery Supply store from several local upholstery shops that procure fabric and leather supplies directly from them. So I figured, instead of paying any markup these shops would charge, I went directly to Capital City in hopes of picking out a large brown leather hide to replace 6 chair cushions a local upholstery shop was going to perform. Right off the bat, the customer service was like how you'd want great customer service would be. And the selection for a single hide I needed was top notch! Business warning! My first time visit to capital city I purchased a number of products and ask for help with five way stretch 9 ounce carpet for a van build. The gentleman assured me they had the materials brought it down sold it to me and, upon installing I was clearly aware it was 95 way stretch 9 ounce carpet/ it was 20 ounce floor carpet. Being my first time I didn't know all the details and became aware as soon as I tried to install. These guys lied to my face. And when I went to return it. They did not want to except it back. Best customer service in a long time. Jim was super helpful in getting new cushions for a 4 year old sectional that just was way too soft, sunk in, hurt my back and flat. Jim let me sit on a few different density foams (firm, medium and soft-medium) before we ordered it. It was easy choice once I tried each one back to back - medium! Jim order it and less than a week later put/cut the new foam into the seat cushions. Our 20 year old couch had seat cushions that had become very soft in the center but it had no other problems. I started checking for sources of foam to replace the seat cushion filling and found Capitol City Upholstery Supply. While looking at their website, I found that they not only sold the needed foam, they would install the foam in your seat cushions! I took my cushions to their shop. They measured the foam and ordered the necessary pieces. A couple days later I returned to the store to get the foam installed in the cushions and waited for the work to be completed. They ran into a problem and offered to deliver the completed cushions to my house for no extra charge! The completed cushions were delivered the next day and the work was excellent. They have a great selection of different densities and sizes, and can order custom pieces in any size. Way cheaper than JoAnn Fabric for foam. I found the employees to be very straightforward and not really interested in coddling you or offering help on your project, but that's fine. When you live in a world where a lot of your stuff is held together by a thread, there will be times when that thread breaks, so this is a very important store for people like us. The environment is super relaxed, in a good way, they sell SEW many items but the staff is never pushy nor do they try to sell you things that you don't needle, get it? We went here to get some replacement sewing machine needles and are in the process of making upholstered cushions. We paid decent prices for high functioning quality. What more could one ask for? They also carry a very complete selection of vehicle interior paint-tons of colors & hues for leather, vinyl, dashboards, carpet, headliners, etc...They'll even come out into the parking lot and help you determine which particular shade of taupe your dashboard is when there are 20 shades of taupe and they all look like a match close to an untrained eye. I was very disappointed in their customer service. I was trying to make it in time before they closed because I was told they don't cut foam on Saturdays. Needless to say I called twice trying to see if they could take payment over the phone. It was raining and traffic was horrible I told them I would not make it by 5pm due to all the rain and crazy traffic we have in Austin. I left at 4pm I work in the Downtown area and the person that I was on the phone with apparently knows what he is saying with a bit of sarcasm that I would make it before 5pm. I got their exactly at 5:04 and of course their close sign was up. It's a shame that they really don't care if they sell anything or not or even try to work with the customer. read more

They not only have foam, they have leather by the yard, faux leather, and they have big cones of upholstery thread in all the colors!!! Whoopee!!! Also the usual necessities--the metal and cardboard strips, nail heads and tools. I don't do upholstery, but I use a lot of their kinda stuff. Goodbye mail order, hello Capital City! Capitol City Upholstery Supply is tucked away on a side street off S. Congress. It doesn't look like much, but if you're looking to upholster furniture, autos, or boats, they've got everything you need. They even had down pillows in their shop and several different types of hides. I get the feeling that they're more wholesale, but will still help you out even if you're not placing a bulk order. I only needed some 1" foam for a dining chair I was re-upholstering, and they cut it to size for me. It cost less than $3. The only bad thing about the shop is the pervasive chemical odor/fumes. It's far from eco-friendly, and I'm sure many of the solvents and chemicals they sell are not good for your health. Don't linger inside otherwise you might get dizzy. read more

I needed foam for an upholstery project (my first) and a friend recommended this place. Based on some of the poor reviews I was a little leary but that fear was totally unfounded. I phoned to confirm they were open on Memorial Day Saturday and also to confirm they would cut my foam to size. I was told if they weren't busy they could cut it that day but if busy, their priority was customers so I would have to leave it and pick up later. (They run half a crew on Saturday) When I arrived I was immediately greeted and helped. While discussing the best foam with the first guy, the second guy in the shop also added some advice and told me he could cut it that day. After measuring it looked like I could only get 5 seat cushions out of a sheet of foam and I needed 6. He walked me back to the back to look for end pieces so I would NOT have to purchase 2 full sheets just to get that 6th chair. We found one suitable and that saved me over $30. Also he cut my back seat foam at an angle just like the chair back. I know it took lots of extra time. He was great. While the 2nd guy was cutting the foam, the third guy and I talked about upholstery tools. This is not a girlie shop. All dudes working here, more of a car and boat type place, but you can get foam in a ton of different thicknesses cut to size and shape, for cheap. Yes! Zippers, cording and velcro by the yard. Yes! Cheap pillow forms. Yes! Located behind U-Haul on Ben White in an industrial type strip center. These guys are super helpful and friendly. Friendly and helpful. Although they will not cut and insert foam for back cushions any more, they did give us tips on which foam to buy and how to do it. I searched Youtube for tips as well. They told us about common problems encountered when redoing inserts (height and width fit problems). We got it done ourselves and are satisfied with our results.
