From the moment you step in, the staff is amazing. Very attentive, polite, professional with a fun waiting room to keep the kids entertained while waiting to be seen. My 10y old son chipped his front tooth in half and we were told that by his normal provider that he needed a crown after many attempts to bond it back on failed. Wanting a second opinion we were referred to Dr. Crippen who was absolutely phenomenal. My son is usually very anxious with seeing the dentist but he felt very comfortable with Dr. Crippen. He sat completely still as Doc was able to not only bond the tooth back on but made it look 10x better/functional than our normal dentist. His dental assistant was outstanding as well and so good with my son. I absolutely recommend switching over/choosing Dr. Crippen at Capital Pediatric Dentistry for all your kids dental work. He was a second opinion for us and not only saved unnecessary money and trauma for my 2 year old, but also formulated a game plan for us including all different kinds of variables. As a child, i was always fearful of the dentist and never wanted the same experience for my son. Dr. Crippen takes his time with his patients and really focuses on building a trusting relationship between him and the child. My three year old son trusts him and looks forward to getting his teeth cleaned at his office. Today he had to get a tooth pulled and i was bracing for a tearful and maybe even traumatized child. This is our second visit with Dr Crippen. He and his whole staff are so great. Lots of precautions on place during COVID with screening patients and staff. I believe we were the only patient in the office at the time! And the front door is locked so that folks can't just wander in. The staff was so friendly with my two year old even though there were tears during the exam. Dr Crippen stayed after to give me an idea of what to expect in terms of teeth growing the next few months and also what to do for oral care. Super easy and pleasant. We came from a high volume, expansion driven chain of pediatric dental care and it was a breath of fresh air to come to Capital Pediatric Dentistry. The waiting area is nice and quiet and usually there is nobody waiting. There are some video games for the kids and they pretty much get to use them exclusively while they wait. Dr. Crippen has a good gentle demeanor that is perfect for the kids, and he shows a great deal of patience even with my hysterical kid (he has since learned to behave at the dentist!). The staff is also very caring and patient. They are able to maintain their composure long after I would have lost it! One of our kids needed some more extensive work and Dr. Crippen went the extra mile to carry him to the car since his anesthesia had not worn off. I've been meaning to review Dr. Crippen and his staff for quite a while now. I first started bringing my daughter to Dr. Crippen when she was maybe 1.5 or 2 yrs old. Now, she's 11 y/o and I have a 4 y/o who sees him. Both of my children feel so comfortable going to the dentist thanks to Dr. Crippen and the rest of the staff. Your children feeling comfortable now is key to setting them up to follow up with their future dental and medical care when they're adults. This was magnified for me when we moved to Folsom when my daughter was almost 7 y/o. Because Folsom is full of families, I figured it'd be easy to find a good pediatric dentist and it'd be nice not to drive out to Sacramento. I was referred to one of those corporate dental places (I'll refrain from naming it here) by another parent. The dentist that we saw basically traumatized my daughter by telling her that she had six cavities and would have to have four separate procedures and if we didn't have them filled then they would progress to her needing a root canal on baby teeth!!!(yes...she actually verbalized this to me in front of a 7 year-old who I had told her ahead of time was anxious about coming to a new dentist). That same dentist also never showed me xrays to show me where these cavities were. You can just imagine my fury. Needless to say, I took my daughter back to Dr. Crippen for a second opinion, because I trusted him and figured if anyone was going to do any procedures on my daughter's mouth it was going to be him and not that other dentist. He was sad to see my daughter so terrified to be in his chair as he had known her from previous visits to be smiling and chipper. He put her at ease and informed she and I that no...she did not have any cavities, they were the same spots we had always been watching, and there were no procedures necessary. He also showed me the xrays as proof. My daughter is 11 y/o now, has only one baby tooth left, and hasn't needed a single filling. She still smiles when she goes into see Dr. Crippen and the staff and comes out smiling. When they've told her things she needed to work on to keep her dental hygiene up, especially when she had braces, she listened and worked hard to get things back up to par. And my son, he enjoys going there too! So, if you want a great dental office with an honest dentist who cares about his patients emotional and dental health and a friendly, very competent staff who's great with kids and parents, then this is the place you want to go if you're in the Sacramento area! read more

As a health care professional myself, I can honestly say Dr. Crippen brings not only great dental services but human kindness in his practice. His team were very professional and knowledgeable and I couldn't be more happier as it's rare these days to find both of these things. My son was experiencing discomfort on one of his tooth, and it turned out he had a cracked tooth. He was in pain, therefore we searched everywhere in the Sacramento area to see who were available to take my son in for an appointment and get him worked on. Many places I called were booked and had no room to squeeze my son in, although I strongly felt that his situation should have been taken more of a priority then folks who were coming in for just teeth cleaning and so forth, but Dr. Crippen and his team were able to find a spot and squeeze my son in. This post is meant for parents who need to use general anesthesia for their precious baby..as a parent, I would just rethink using him as the pediatric dentist AND anesthesiologist...you really want the anesthesiologist to be monitoring breathing, heart rate, etc the ENTIRE time!!!! This is the only thing keeping your child alive while under general anesthesia. I don't think it is really the safest option to have the dentist doing both. How can he be filling a tooth, extracting a tooth, crowning a tooth or Anything else while also monitoring your child's breathing? As a parent, I would strongly suggest you find a dentist who uses a separate anesthesiologist so your child is 100% monitored the entire time. ANOTHER baby dies from dentist doing anesthesia in Stockton....SO very DANGEROUS to play both parts, one of which requires M.D, not DDS...a real Medical doctor with specialty in anesthesia...this particular office is an accident waiting to happen...The anesthesiologist is in charge of keeping your child ALIVE...don't you want the best, safest setting for your little loved one? Please DO NOT Roll the dice here...find a DDS who does their specialty (teeth) and a Medical Doctor, M.D., who trained for years in anesthesia? Not just a weekend course??? I stand by my review and although my child wasn't given general anesthesia, in the manner we all think of (respiratory assistance, etc.), he WAS given IV sedation and still sleeping when we left. Slept the whole way home and a few hours at home. For a child weighing 35lbs, putting sedation meds through a vein will probably have an effect on each child differently, however I've consistently read reviews of other parents' whose child was "carried" to the car. Why carry a child unless they are unable to walk and still in "lala land?" As a parent, I suggest you do research, even if it's only IV sedation, please check to see if a separate Dentist will be following your child's vitals while the other is repairing their teeth. read more

We've gone here twice with my 3 yr old son. The office staff are very nice and have managed to help him feel comfortable during both visits. There are also flat screen tv's playing kids movies, that can be viewed from the exam chairs durin the cleanings/exams, which helps (though know you're partially paying for that in the price). My only complaint with them is their practice requires a once-yearly x-ray for all kids my son's age, which I'm not entirely comfortable with (they do use digital x-rays which are supposed to have much lower doses of radiation). If you're ok with the frequent x-rays, then this is a great pediatric dentist to try. read more

My 4 year old son needed some dental work, so my usual dentist recommended he go to a pediatric dentist. First we tried a well respected one in Gold River, and it was a nightmare. My usually fearless and confident kid came out of there completely freaked out by the dentist. Needless to say, we didn't go back to get the work finished there. Then I checked Yelp and found Capital Pediatric Dentistry. Thank you Yelp, and thank you Dr. Crippen and staff! My son has been in for both a cleaning, and to finish what the other dentist started. He had great experiences, and the work was superb. The doctor and his staff are caring and attentitive and made both visits very positive. My son is again comfortable with dental appointments. I came here in desperate need of direction for my child and an unerupted tooth that was unsightly when you viewed the x-ray. I wanted a dentist to work on my kid without inducing unnecessary stress/fear, ridiculous insurance charges or high out of pocket fees. Before I step foot in the door, I should have taken the necessary steps as a parent and asked more questions over the phone with the receptionist such as if the dentist will work with the child when filling cavities or extracting without using general anesthesia and opt for injectable lidocaine? Also, can the office negotiate payments prior to doing treatments over many office visits? Let me back up here, my child had dental problems like any other 4 year old and needed an unerupted extra tooth growing in an unusual place extracted, with cavities galore and extractions to be done (my child was a treasure mine for any dentist). After X-rays, a cleaning, and a consultation Crippen told me that he will only work on my child under general anesthesia because there was "too much work that needed to be done" and that the unerupted tooth needs to be be surgically removed. I politely told him that my child can tolerate needles and is not fussy. I asked him if he thought the unerupted tooth will grow out and perhaps he will consider a regular extraction. With red flushed cheeks and using his fingers to twirl his brown hair by his ear, Crippen told me that "no this tooth will not grow out and that surgery is neccessary." (Beep, WRONG ANSWER!!) Crippen should have told me the truth and said he don't know because he never worked on a case like this one. Within 3 months the tooth actually grew out of the gums and another general dentist has already preformed a regular extraction with a lidocaine injection, the treatment took less than 45 minutes and properly healed. Like yelper Aieabo Y. and other smart parents I too sensed a dental office scam as well as a money hungry children's dentist ready to take as much money out of the insurance company as well as the patients as long as someone is willing to pay! The office quoted me that after METlife dental pays $xxxx amount my share will be $2,XXX out of pocket for all the work that needed to be done in 1 office visit and that my child will need general anesthsia no exceptions. The office manager also mentioned that these prices are estimated and that the actual cost of the procedure might change on the day of or after the treatments are complete. Also that I needed to pay the $2XXX amount before any paperwork or work is started and put down $500 as a deposit. (I can upload a picture of this statement if any one wants to see on Yelp.) Crippens' office members and he saw I was desperate to help my child have healthy teeth and better smile. Fortunately for me I wasn't foolish enough to go through with their scheme. In terms of Crippens having a gentle demeanor...sure he will since his office manager has yet to swipe your insurance card or to have you make an out of pocket payment. I gather the office rather not spend as much time with a child patient over a long period of many office visits to gain your child's trust but do 1 office visit and put the child under so Crippen can get workin' and make more money! I took my child and money elsewhere. That's my point of view and I'm stickin' to it. Amazing...just amazing. There are so many things to love. There is parking RIGHT next door, which is great for midtown. The office is small in a good way. They have toys, and books but in a separate room a TV and what I think is video games. So quiet and nice. The staff was so laid back and sweet. Our Daughter has special needs and we have been to hell and back with her teeth and crappy dentists. Today was so great...I was nervous but they were very gentle and sweet to both me and my Daughter. They were actually able to clean her teeth and do an exam and after, she gave Dr. Crippen a BIG HUG. She has never ever hugged her other Dentists! The entire office is calm, inviting and professional. My only wish is that I would have found them years ago! read more

We have a 2-year-old son who was having his second dental visit and switched offices to Capital Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Crippen. The office staff was very sweet to us and our son and they were very organized. The office space was cute and modern and very clean. Dr. Crippen was great: our normally shy 2-year-old warmed up and was tolerant of his second dental visit and all the fingers-in-the-mouth that entails. Dr. Crippen was informative and it was an overall really positive visit. During the visit, my well-meaning but out-of-control partner started going on and on, and somehow ended up saying something about dentistry not being medicine?! Our 3.5 year old son has had a cavity on his upper front tooth for years now that we have just been watching as I've never felt comfortable enough to have it crowned (recommendation from previous dentist) and it was said to be fine to leave it alone and just watch it. Half of the tooth had chipped off because of it. Since he is starting school this year we wanted to get a second opinion and have it checked again. Thankfully I stumbled upon this practice on the web. Location is great. Parking is very convenient. We walked in and the front desk was professional and friendly. My son had xrays done and then an exam from Dr. Crippen. He said the cavity could be left alone and would be just fine. Aesthetically he could try and do some bonding on it, but a crown, as previously suggested, would be extremely aggressive for what it was. It was made very clear that My son could very well not comply with the procedure but it would be quick. He suggested laughing gas. We were able to book the procedure for a week later. Thankfully my son was very cooperative and Dr. Crippin was extremely fast and precise. His filling turned out perfect! He answered all of my questions about the gas and explained how it worked thoroughly. His demeanor is calm and professional. He followed up with a check in call a few hours after we left. His staff is very caring. My son looks forward to the balloon and token to pick his prize out at the end of each visit. We will be patients as long as my kids need pediatric dentistry! read more

I would love to be writing a five star review for this office, but alas, it's not gonna happen. Dr. Crippen seems like a nice enough guy. He was very good with my fidgety 5 year old on his first visit. That's where he gets his one star. Most of you know, however, the dental insurance doesn't cover a lot. And my child needs a good chunk of work done. Even with insurance, my sons work is going to set me back about a grand. Dr. Crippen does not offer any form of in house financing at all. Period. The end. They want me to magically produce a thousand extra dollars. They *do* offer the "CareCredit" program, which is a separate program offered by GEMoney Bank. CareCredit is going through some VERY rough times now (google it) and are routinely shutting people's accounts. It's becoming such a problem, my family practice AND my vet who've both offered it for years are NO LONGER taking CareCredit because they are screwing over so many people. I stressed out and finally called about seven other pediatric dentists in the area. After speaking at length to them all, every single one said that not only would they OF COURSE break up a payment so large, but they were all pretty shocked that Dr. Crippen's office doesn't break up payments. I was too. I see an established dentist in midtown for my own work (Dr. Obrien) and they laughed at the idea that I'd pay for my $2000 crown all in one payment. It wasn't a matter of IF they could break it up, but they merely asked "How much do you want your payments to be?" Considering the sham that is dental insurance, it seems like it would be practical to break up large payments for your clients. I would like to think it's because Dr. Crippen is new and is trying to be different. However in an extensive conversation with Leslie at his office, I was left with the impression that possibly they are simply trying to weed out certain "undesirable" patients. Who knows. In any event, while the visit was pleasant, I'm obviously super turned off by their apparent greed and inflexibility. It seems to be industry standard for the area to break up such big payments, but they were completely unwilling to work with me on this. And for this State employee family, in these economic times........that's a huge deal breaker for me. If you anticipate actually needing work past the yearly exams, I would seriously consider looking for another office. If Dr. Crippen lasts through the recession, hopefully he'll learn what all his peers already know about how to run his business. For now...........I recommend going to an established dentist where you don't have to worry about financial surprises. read more

It's interesting to read that people think this office overcharges. I don't have dental coverage for either of my kids and I've had to pay for a filling, check up x-ray and the removal of excess gum tissue around a molar. I truly appreciate that Dr. Crippin's office give a 25% discount when you pay cash or credit. 25% DISCOUNT, my own dentist has only offered 10% all these years. This office goes above and beyond to help their clients and i'm sorry to see another one star rating for this office. WHY IS YELP FLAGGING 90% OF THE REVIEWS FOR THIS OFFICE? BEWARE!!!! Over treats and will not do any work on your child with out general anesthesia. Told me that my 3.5 y/o needed two crowns. Got two second opinions and both stated that the recommended treatment was VERY aggressive and not necessary. Son has now gotten two fillings with out anesthesia and did great. read more
