Just got my car out of the shop again for my serpentine belt ... might be time to get a new car lol! I still feel the same way I did in my review in 2014! My husband and I live in Incline Village - where there are plenty of shops that work on cars - but we ONLY take our vehicle repairs and maintenance to Capitol Automotive. From replacing a transmission, water pump, and struts, all the way down to simply getting our oil changed, we know that Marcus, Chris, and the guys will take good care of our RAV4 and Jeep Unlimited - at an incredibly fair price. As a woman, I trust their advice - I don't feel like I need to bring my husband, dad, brother or other guy with me to interpret what they're saying, or to be sure I'm getting a fair deal. They always take time to answer any questions I have, and I've never been "upsold" on something that wasn't imminently necessary. For example, when they replaced my struts, they took the time to show me exactly what was wrong, so I didn't have to worry that it maybe wasn't necessary - those puppies were shot, and now I know what a strut is lol (and why I need to avoid the potholes more often lol). My best friend from childhood is a mechanic shop owner down in the Bay Area - and even he is impressed by how right they treat my husband and I! Finally, I like the personal and professional values that the whole crew has there - values like customer service, honesty, compassion (like, when I freaked out about needing a new transmission), and helpfulness. I live in the Los Angeles area and was on a vacation trip to Reno/Lake Tahoe this summer. My car overheated near Carson City. I pulled over to cool it down. After asking around for a local auto repair shop, I came to Capitol Automotive. Marcus came out and gave me a quote of how much they will charge to test and to identified the problem. After 1 1/2 hours, they said my Radiator cap was not holding the pressure (that's it)... Imagine you are 600 miles away from home.. if a shop tells you that your radiator is leaking and must be replaced? are you going to do it?.. you get the point. This place does an HONEST/professional job that anyone can trust. After the cap was replaced, I was told to bring the car back after a few days to ensure that the coolent level has not dropped. I brought the car back the next day as follow up and there was no additional charge. Marcus cared about his work and definitely about client satisfaction. I was hearing a noise on my car every time I turned so I called them just so they could take a quick glimpse at it for me. I went in around 5:00pm and most people are leaving work by then, but I spoke to a wonderful gentleman named Marcus who came outside and greeted me with a smile and said "let's go for a ride" We didn't even make it out of the driveway before he knew what the issue was. I needed power steering fluid. Being a female and not knowing anything about cars, it was nice to do business with a trustworthy smiling man who was honest and willing to help!!!! They went above & beyond to make sure my favorite old truck (1993 Chevy Silverado) was safe & ready to drive from Carson City to North Carolina. After they gauged me Almost $400 to fix a glove compartment light and said they did a diagnostic scan. a week later they again overcharged to fix the coil (which in my opinion should have been found in said diagnostic). Beware because this guy Marcus like to argue and won't let you say a word. I won't ever darken their door again !!! read more

It's not easy to find a good mechanical repair facility that you can trust. But, I just found one at Capitol Automotive. All work was thoroughly explained before being completed by a competent mechanic with years of experience. I am very satisfied that the work was done correctly and the price for doing it was fair. I lost faith in another local facility that I had used for several years when that Service Manager lied to me about a repair. My three vehicles will now be getting serviced at Capitol Automotive for what I'm sure will be a long time. read more

Marcus has been kind enough to not charge us for a simple repair to a loose transmission line in my wife's car. He has taken the time to look over my truck for a coolant leak before a long trip. Fast and friendly. I was referred to Capitol by my tire dealer because I needed an alignment. I didn't know if it needed front and rear or just one of those. I was impressed with their honesty with the news that only the front end was out of alignment. They also did a free inspection of fluids, brakes, etc., and again, said I only needed new windshield wipers. Plus they gave me a good recommendation to get a good breakfast nearby while they did the work. read more

Went in there because with what turned out to be a battery problem. they called with the quote and i was taken aback as i felt it was a bit steep, we discussed it and i said to go ahead and replace the battery. I arrive to get my car and was informed that i told them not to fix it and the battery was not replaced. I was rather unhappy as that was the opposite of what I said. He proceeded to argue with me about what I said. I asked if it could be done that night as I needed my car and he said no. He was decent enough to not charge me the diagnostic charge since they failed to fix my car. I would not take my car back there. read more

Very frustrating experience with exhaust manifold leak on Ford F-150. $231.50 later I have broken manifold stud and no repair. I have a socket wrench and could have broken that stud for free. Removed 3 studs out of 8 and charged again to put them back in. I'll be looking for a new mechanic. Unfortunate. read more

I have never before given a review of a place good or bad, but in this particular case I felt I should. We had Upper and Lower Ball joints done on a vehicle summer 2014, the total cost was over $2,000.00. Today I took my car into a shop and found out that the drivers side upper and lower ball joint is shot. I called Capital Automotive to ask if this repair would be under warranty since it has only been a year and a half since the $2,000 repair was done. I was told that it would not be. I am sorry but this is just not right!!! Capital Automotive charges the highest prices which supposedly means the best parts and service, clearly my experience does not speak for either! read more

Please read through. I feel such a fool for trusting this place. I am disabled and have a handicap van. Well I went here loyally for well over a year. Then I take my van in for fixes on some leaks wellell over $1000 amount of repairs. Thin I drive home there's a funny new noises, soon after my ABS light stars flicking on and off. I take it up there and they say "oh well that makes sense we probably nudged something when we were fixing the leaks. It was in the same area" Then they claim nothing is wrong and I go home and the light comes back on during the trip home! I ago back again, they take forever and say they know nothing. And they messed with my parking break so that they could say it was un able to be driven. Just Brakes across the street was appalled by my treatment and helped me get my parking brake fixed. I called these guys at Capt Auto a few times and got this run around about how they don't really know what's wrong it could be this and their diagnostic machine was saying since number they didn't understand (yet they still charged me to get this unknown code) then it's this big story about some recalled part but they don't know how to replace it and don't know anyone who could help to me try to find someone who could. Les Schwab recently told me that these guys also damaged part of my undercarriage because my van needs a pit when being serviced and Capt Auto doesn't have a pit so they just forced it, damaging my van each time. Plus they charged me to tell me that they can't tell me anything! Yep, I'm disabled with little car knowledge so I'm an easy target. But I trusted these guys and my repairs through them were a lot of business for them. They realized they did something to damage my ABS system but since I can't prove it so they just ran away from their responsibility in damaging it. Evident in the fact that the problem with why they couldn't diagnose it changed multiple times. Also they used to send reminder cards and since the ABS system issue I haven't gotten my regular reminders. Beware of a place that cheats the disabled and messes up the braking system in a handicap van and doesn't care. read more

First time at Capital automotive, nice shop seemed professional. Let me say upfront, I needed rear shocks installed, I was given an estimate of the cost and agreed to it. I did questioned the $189.87 cost for each shock, manager said even a stock shock would cost me $60.00 each, leading me to think my vehicle required some special expensive shock because of the lift on my vehicle. I approved the work to proceed. A week later I started thinking about replacing the fronts shocks also, looked online and what did I find, everywhere its a $90.00 shock or less, Rancho rs7062, went to Napa, for customers off the street $96.00 out the door. I went back to Capital Automotive, not to get money back but wanted to know why they over charged me so much. The following is bullet points of what manager said to me... 1) We have no control of cost, the computer calculates it. 2) Admits owner set how computer calculates it 3) Their markup is a standard in the industry 4) Customers can go buy their own parts and bring them in. 5) We didn't charge you for the extra time we spent removing old shocks, had a stubborn bolt. 6) The markup covers them if they need to do warranty work, problems with shock. 7) With my thinking if they bought a .50 cent bulb, I would have a problem with them charging me $1.50 Just spin and double talk. Now I understand most business due a markup, In and out of the Auto care field. 10-20%, to me that's expected, over 100% that to me is just a rip off, from a greedy, unethical shop. If its a standard mark up, they should have told me when I first question the cost that they added $100.00 for each shock. And the two bolts they replaced $14.05 for both.
