We passed through Socorro during a long day on the road after visiting my father south of Tucson. We stopped in to Capitol rather than one of the other two breweries on the plaza to get a stamp in our Hop Passport. A very pleasant bartender seated my wife, our young puppy, and me on their very nice patio, and brought the pup a bowl of water without being asked, which we always appreciate. I ordered an IPA and my wife got a stout, as February is stout month at craft breweries all around the country. Both of us thought our beers were delicious and well balanced. To our surprise, there were ashtrays on several of the tables on the patio, and a man was smoking a cigar a few tables from us (smoking is banned inside and out at all business establishments in Colorado). The piped-in music was rather eclectic - everything from 70s classic rock to Shakira to modern auto-tuned pop. We had just had lunch in Hatch, so did not try the food. We have decided that we will spend the night in Socorro on an upcoming trip to see my dad, as the town looks like a lot of fun and we really want to try the other local brewpubs. read more

I stopped by Capitol Bar & Brewery during a homecoming parade so it got crowded right after we walked in, but the service stayed great throughout. I got a flight of beers: the Green Chile Lager actually had quite a spicy kick (definitely an acquired taste). My favorite was the 49er's Oktoberfest Lager. The Hoppenheimer was a strong IPA with a 9.3% ABV, and the Ladrones Mexican Lager was crisp and refreshing. For food, I tried the Socorro Dog ($11). It's supposed to have bacon, but I couldn't really see or taste any. I liked the combo of shredded Gouda, green chile, tomato relish, and beer mustard. The poppy seed bun was also a nice touch. We also shared a 12 inch Supreme Pizza ($14.50) with olives, sausage, green chile, mushrooms, and pepperoni. I liked the thin crust. I also ordered the Birds of a Feather cocktail ($13) which had dark aged rum, Aperol, pineapple juice, lime, and simple syrup. I asked for a splash of Prosecco to make it sparkling, and it was indeed refreshing. They also have a pool table ($1 per rack) and a dog-friendly outdoor patio, which I always like to see. There's also plenty of board games to borrow. The only downside was that the bathrooms could use a little cleaning and updating. Overall though, this was a solid spot with good drinks and a chill vibe. read more

Terrible bar service. I guess the bartender just didn't want to serve me. Also, place is supposed to be open until 11, stopped cooking at 8:30. When there aren't many choices in the town, maybe one should stand out. This one did not, wound up eating dinner at Walmart. read more

Their house made beers are fine, their drinks are OK, but the food has become a major disappointment. Morning pastries are seldom fresh (although heating them helps), pizzas are meh, and the sandwiches have devolved into scant helpings of cold cuts. The hot dogs are tasty, but so overfilled with toppings that it's impossible to enjoy them as designed. Eating a hot dog with a knife and fork is just plain wrong. read more

The staff gets 5/5 stars, great people. Unfortunately we struck out with the food menu due to some logistical challenges- so we got the hot dogs that weren't very hot, but honestly the taste was not terrible. Drinks (for those who partook) were priced fairly and served quick. The bar itself has a pretty cool history and I suggest asking the staff about the late 1800's and prohibition era. read more

My vegetarian family and I were passing through at 9pm on a Tuesday, and thought our dinner might be quite sad. We were pleasantly surprised to see many vegetarian options on the menu, and each of us had something different--a pesto pizza, a 3-cheese grilled cheese sandwich (with green chile and tomato), and a caprese sandwich. The use of gouda takes the flavor up a notch. We saw a bit of local color with karaoke happening the next room over. Our waiter was attentive and polite. If you like dive bars this is the place for you. It's one of the oldest in New Mexico. Very eclectic and cool history. The staff was friendly and accommodating. And it's reasonably priced. NOT FIRST RESPONDER FRIENDLY. Went there with some other students , Sat at a table. No one greeted us, we sat at table for 20 mins with no service. Not a packed bar at the time we were there. I proceeded to the bar and observed a male and female bartender there. I was on the female bartenders side with maybe 5 people.. she served was talking to all the patrons there , looked at me and left.. I would see her pop out and talk to patrons and leave. The male bartender did the same . He kept waiting on the everyone , came over to us and only spoke to us when we were the last to order. He then took our order, and waited on other people before getting our beers . Did not feel welcomed there, despite having FD and Police shirts and patches on the wall. We finished our beers and left. Too bad as the beer was decent. Food menu was limited as well. read more

We are from Socorro and have spent many an evening in The Capitol! However, we don't visit very often and this our first time in The Capitol since 2004. We really like what Joanna and Earl have done with the place. It is bright and clean, the food menu looks great (we showed up late so we didn't try any food), and the beer selection was awesome! Great selection of their own brew and tons of other options. We tried the Jailbreak IPA and it was delicious. Nice citrus flavors and no bitterness. Finally and most importantly the service was top-notch. Roxy was friendly, attentive and professional. She explained that she was new and had to check with the more experienced person when we had questions. She was able to get answers quickly from the other staff member. Unfortunately we did not get her name because she was also very friendly, knowledgeable and professional. We will definitely be back to The Capitol when we visit Socorro again!. read more

Best place in Socorro to enjoy drinks at any time of the day. Reasonable price, bartenders are friendly. The patio area is quite nice, especially if you smoke cigarettes. There are two pool tables, however, the cue sticks need replacements. Regardless, you can still have a good time. read more

The Capitol Bar doesn't face a whole lot of competition in Socorro, with only about two other bars in town, so I'm happy that it does something to deserve its position right on the plaza and in the hearts of everyone in town. I've gotten consistently fast and friendly service at the Capitol, even when it's fairly busy they do a decent job of keeping up with all the crowd. As for the crowd - well, it's a small town dive bar. Most of the time it's friendly, much of the time it's raucous, and occasionally things get a little tense. There are good deals on weekday nights often including serious discounts on draught beers, but I've never really paid enough attention to figure out what the scheme is. The bartender should tell you what's currently on special. And there's free popcorn, so remember that. The interior of the cap is also quite big, and then there's a back patio, so there's really quite a bit of space. On the other hand, the interior is not particularly well kept, and there's less seating than it seems like there ought to be. read more

This is the only bar to go to in Socorro. It doesn't have any competitors so the bar tenders attitude is more like a 'if you don't like my service then leave'. I have dealt with very unfriendly and rude service here (especially from the woman behind the bar with short hair) and I don't think I will ever go there again. They also don't have a large selection of vodkas (no titos or stolie) or other top shelf alcohols I would give zero stars for service, but the actual bar is clean and it has a really nice outside patio and live music so I gave them 2 stars overall....I suggest they get a new bar tender in there as I'm not the only one who felt her condensing attitude. Then, customers will leave happy not because they are drunk but because they were treated with respect. read more

This review intended mainly for IRTB students. Well... actually, not bad. Not great, but not terrible. Down and dirty place to go at night. Walking distance from most hotels (we did from the Holiday Inn Express). Wednesday is "Tech" night, which is essentially "college" night with a DJ. The place is pretty old, has a lot of cool photos on the wall, and a lot of patches. Bring your own to add to the collection. Pros - Open past 10. Cheap beer, both draft and bottles, and a good selection of both, Full bar, Popcorn, Smoking Patio, Pool Tables, Tv's with games on, inexpensive, On Wednesday there is a free shuttle after midnight. IRTB friendly. Cons - Draft beer tasted... off. They need to clean their lines, DJ seemed to have an overabundance of 70's music (maybe the new music hasn't reached here yet??). read more

The best bar in Socorro. Doesn't say much I know, but everyone keeps coming back, so it must be good. The bartenders are great and will definitely take care of you. Beer and drinks are cheap, and they know what they are doing. Wed it'll get crowded cause its College night, but every college town has a college night, so thats no surprise. Fri the week is out so it gets a little crowded, but really its never that bad. They also have an awesome patio that you can enjoy, and they have heat lamps out during the winter for the smokers. And once you get to know the bartenders they'll let you take control of the tvs, or they'll put on something if you ask. read more

There is no way to explain the historic significance of places like the Capitol to west coast and east coast travelers.. best for you all to just drop off the I 25 exit, get your Subway sandwiches and keep on trucking, cause there ain't nothing here for you to see. read more

This BAR...OMG. I love the cool dive vibes and the location is right in the heart of Socorro. There is always plenty of parking, TWO pool tables, Karaoke nights, Open Mic nights, and even a pool tournament every Thursday with only a $5 entry fee! The prices are SO different from CA. Way lower and any tips are SO appreciated. The STAFF. WOW is all I have to say. No, I'm going to say more. My favorite bartender is Carlos who CLEARLY takes pride in his work and puts great effort into every drink he makes you. But, he isn't the only cool bartender there. You are always greeted with a friendly and GENUINE smile and 'Hi, what can I get you?" If you happen to be in this neck of the desert, I HIGHLY recommend this bar to sit, relax, take in the history and have a drink. You WON"T be sorry you did. read more

I don't really have anything good to say about this place but I just think I may have gone on a bad night. I have had friends that told me they had a different experience then I did. My personal opinion is stay away. It's just a dive bar. There really wasn't any personality to the place which is unfortunate given it's history. The bartender said the only food they serve is pizza and wings and were not recommended to try. The place was pretty empty. Maybe you will have a different experience but there are better places to spend your time and money in my opinion. read more
