Dr. P was great. She was very attentive, answered all of my questions, was very kind and clearly articulated my dental options. From my brief appointment with her yesterday, I could tell that she's the kind of medical practitioner that makes you want to become a long time patient. A solid 5 star dental professional. Unfortunately, my experience with the front desk personnel left much to be desired. LaShandra gave me the feeling that she didn't want to be bothered with me. The tone in which she spoke to me on the phone before I ever made it into the office was curt, but then when I finally came in the office, I felt that her tone was even more demeaning. The whole time she spoke with me, she'd never make any eye contact. I'm hard of hearing and wear hearing aids and trying to hear when people have a mask on is very difficult and she seemed to not want to repeat anything and that she simply didn't have time. (Mind you, there's no one else in the waiting area, nor is the phone ringing during this time which I would've understood if she couldn't answer my questions at the moment due to other office obligations). Finally I asked her to give me a second to turn on my mic (I have a mic that connects directly to my hearing aids via Bluetooth to help me hear better. The last question (about insurance) I started to try and ask her before going into the room with the doctor, I was stopped abruptly by her saying that it was time to see the doctor so I guess that was her way of not answering the question. Growing up, my family didn't have a healthy dental routine of seeing dentists. As an adult, I'm dealing with the consequences of that and trying to create healthier dental habits moving forward. I was beyond excited to come to Capitol Family Dental since it's in my neighborhood and had so many phenomenal reviews. I had even convinced my husband to give them a shot potentially leaving his normal dentist and hygienist that he's been going to for 10+ years since Capitol Family Dentistry is in the neighborhood. But unfortunately, my experience speaking with LaShandra multiple times over the phone before I came in for my first appointment coupled with my in-person experience turned me off a bit. Moreover, when I'd ask questions, she'd make assumptions that she knew the reason behind my question and answered based on what she thought I needed to know instead of just answering my question which made the communication even more tense (not to mention, leaving me without the information I was trying to get). I mean, I'm in the dentist's office ON MY BIRTHDAY with a broken tooth. Definitely not how I want to start off the morning of my birthday but to be made to feel like you're not worth the time is just not a good experience. Not sure how to proceed but I may still be looking for a new dentist. I hate to give such a highly regarded dental practice 2 stars, but when the experience with front desk is such that it leaves you feeling like you don't want to come back and you're weighing to yourself whether or not to continue to subject yourself to this type of treatment, I think it warrants it. I couldn't do only 1 star because Dr. P was a gem. But what good are great doctors when the staff makes you feel like trash before you even get to meet them? read more

Update: After speaking with Dr. Jacques, who gave me a call. He is always kind and knowledgeable. He let me know that he referred me based on my insurance and to contact them. He did this in the manner it should have been done from the beginning. Unfortunately, he agreed I shouldn't come back because his front desk staff attitude is bad and afraid if I come back in person there may be some physical altercation, which is scary because why would it get physical if you hire professional staff? That was a super weird comment. .................................................................................................................................. DO NOT patronize this establishment. The receptionist Lazandria or a name very similar is very rude. She is always the lady that answers the phone with the DC accent. She has been rude since my first appointment. Additionally, when contacting them about a follow-up, the receptionist hung up in my face claiming the dental office on the other line was calling about me, when I told her there is no way this could be true, she hung up anyway. She knew she was wrong because she called back and said, "I'm sorry they weren't calling about you, it was another patient and I apologize for being so rude". The fact you have to call back and acknowledge you can't keep you attitude in check lets me know this dentist does not care about who he hires and how they treat his customers. She was also very nasty when corresponding with them about my referral to a specialist. She told me it was not their fault that they may not be in network when they refer out to specialists. This is after when I called and asked how they refer to specialists, and she said they refer to specialists based on my insurance. She realized there was a problem and tried to walk back on what she initially said. You ARE NOT SAFE with them. Anyone that can hire staff that will be so reckless with your care is not a good establishment. This woman hung up in my face and proceeded to yell at me on the phone when she started changing her story after saying they referred me based on my insurance. They take no responsibility. Anyone that cares about their money and wants a confident health care team that WORKS TOGETHER, this is not the place for you. If this comment is removed, I will repost. Today is 8-9-2022. read more

I'm just back from my first appointment with Dr. Jacques & I've decided to post how impressed I was. The 2 words I'd use to describe him are: gentle & thorough. He took great care while cleaning my teeth not to jab the instrument into my gums. And he succeeded. I didn't get stabbed once! Even more importantly, he was VERY thorough. With my previous dentist, I was in the chair no more than 15 minutes. With Dr. Jacques, it was more like 45. I really appreciate the attention to detail that this translated into. I also was very pleased with the administrative side. I just called yesterday, assuming I wouldn't be able to get an appointment for at least a week. But there'd been a cancellation, so I was offered an appointment this morning. The woman I talked to then sent me several forms to complete. Dr. Jacques and LaSandra are awesome! LaSandra went above and beyond to help me figure out my insurance situation and accommodate my crazy schedule to get an appointment. They were both so friendly greeting me for my early morning appointment, which actually started on time unlike most providers in the DC area. I really enjoy the small business feel and personal service. Dr. Jacques does the cleaning himself, which means there's no 15-minute wait between the cleaning and actually seeing the dentist. It was the first dental experience I've had in years where the office didn't try to sell me anything extra. Their location is super convenient and the office is clean and welcoming. Dr. Jacques & LaSandra are the absolute best, who knew you could have fun getting your teeth cleaned? I have been going to them for the last 3 years including through the pandemic. They are so reliable, mindful, and thorough. I've been in DC for about 10 years and have been jumping from dentist to dentist, some because they don't know how to charge insurance properly or they see a 'shadow' and want to take care of it. Random charges and unnecessary treatment is never a problem here, they truly put the patient first. I've seen Dr. Jacques twice now, both times this past fall. The first was my routine cleaning. Dr. Jacques was very friendly and personable and made the appointment very pleasant. His assistant was also very nice. The office is located on a great block and it was easy to get to via metro for me. I went back to see Dr. Jacques when a tooth was hurting and he fit me in right away and was able to diagnose my issue and fix it. What a fantastic experience, staff, and practice! So happy to have found this dentistry team here on the Hill. I just became a permanent resident and needed to find a dentist for a route check-up. My experience was really wonderful. LaSandra and Dr. Jacques were welcoming when I walked in and immediately took me back. Arranging an appointment and taking care of paperwork was easy to do via email beforehand. They both made me feel comfortable and like I had been a patient for years. As a physician, I am sensitive to the difficulties physicians and dentists have monitoring the behavior of their front desk staff, with whom patients interact first (and last). So this review is not a criticism of the dentist/s in this practice, but the deplorable attitude of their staff. During several interactions with the person managing the phone/front desk, I have never encountered rudeness of this magnitude. She was abrupt and demeaning (she immediately started lecturing in a pompous tone, without any hint of friendliness), impatient, repetitive (she assumed if she repeated the same statement, but increasingly loudly, I would finally understand --even though she was not answering the question I was asking), inconsiderate and dismissive of questions or concerns. When I asked whether she would please be able to send me specific information via email, I received a terse reply: "I will not." Well, I will not be subjecting myself to this treatment. Remember the golden rule: Treat others as you would have them treat you. And when looking for a medical provider, if they treatment you receive by the staff is cringe-worthy, take your business elsewhere. read more

The service I received at this practice was outstanding! When I called, I got a human person immediately and I was able to schedule an appointment about two weeks out, which was perfect. There was no wait, all of my interactions were pleasant and professional, and there was no shaming or blaming about my flossing habits. LaShonda fills many roles admirably. Dr. Jacques has a very light, gentle touch, and my cleaning was painless and efficient. This practice had, by far, the best reviews of all the practices I looked at, and I'm glad I chose it. My only recommendation to the business would be to update the forms so they are more gender inclusive, less dated, easier to read, and can be completed and submitted electronically with ease. I admit I didn't do a ton of research in the area once I saw Capitol Family Dentistry accepted my insurance on their web page. Dr. Tyler Jacques was extremely pleasant and knowledgeable however. It is a small shop, so don't expect all the bells and whistles if you are used to that. They are convenient and friendly once you get in the door. Shortly after I sent an email to Dr. Tyler Jacques office advising how disappointed I was and that I hoped he read his emails, his staff called back to advise that they couldn't make an appointment today because "he was out of the office", something they never mentioned. Do you really need a dentists who's practices is more concerned with a CYA than you well being? Speaks volumes, I would think. 09/19/2018 - 4:45PM: Perhaps I caught the doctor and his staff on a bad day, but I experienced nothing like the other reviews here or the testimonials on his website. Today I called to join his practice as a new patient. I called and had to leave a message, which was only returned hours later after I sent a follow up email. Strike one, you can't reach a person. You get a recording. On both occasions that I contacted the office I advised I wanted to become a new patient and that I was experiencing discomfort with a tooth. I was advised that they could not see me today, even though there was 1.5 hours left in the day. OK, that seems reasonable, assuming the doctor has back to back appointments and makes NO EXCEPTIONS for patients after hours. But what was truly revealing was when his office advised they couldn't see me until Monday! That's 4 days and nearly 100 hours away. When I asked for some consideration, the staffer showed no sympathy and was too eager to end the call. I read the doctors webpage and testimonials. I'm not sure who wrote those, but I need a doctor that can see me when I need him/her. Not an auto mechanic that can't think on his feet to help everyone as best possible. Again, I didn't have the privilege of experiencing his capacities, but then again, when you need your dentist- you generally need them to be responsive. And god help any child that may be in pain or need immediate care. I would not call this a family practices. Looks like any child not scheduled can sit back and lump it too. So bravo to the good doctor for having such a successful practice that his patients are there for his schedule, regardless of need, instead of the other way around. Very unprofessional in my opinion. I am a retired dental hygienist. I needed a new dentist and someone suggested Dr. Jacques. Knowing he was young I wanted to be sure he would be practicing long enough so I didn't have to find another dentist for a long time. He was so kind and gentle. Let me start by saying I had not been to the dentist in a few years because I have had terrible dental experiences in the past. Needless to say, I was pretty nervous when I made the appointment and even more nervous when I got to the office! When I got in the chair, Dr Jacques was very warm and personable. We started with X-rays and he was able to see where my toothache was coming from right away. I had a pretty big cavity on one of my back teeth. I was so nervous about getting the filling done but I am happy to report he was so gentle with the Novocaine and from there it was a breeze! I have a few other small cavities to take care of and I need a cleaning so I already made two follow up appointments! read more
