I've been going here for dental care since 1989. Until recently I saw Dr. Bouchard, who retired this year. Today I saw Dr. Hodges for a cleaning and filling. The service here is generally very good, and the staff is professional and courteous. The hygienists are spectacular. However, depending on your insurance provider and assigned dentist, the wait times can be frustrating, even with a scheduled appointment. During my recent visit, I arrived 30 minutes early and still waited an additional 22 minutes past my appointment time before being seen. I also would not recommend relying on this office for specialist referrals. I was referred to a specialist who was outside of my insurance network, which resulted in significantly higher out-of-pocket costs. I later learned that the referral was made because the specialist was considered a "trusted" colleague or friend of the office, rather than based on insurance coverage or patient convenience. I feel like both could have been achieved with some DD. Had I known this beforehand, I could have researched and selected a qualified in-network specialist closer to my location and avoided unnecessary expenses. Since CHDG office asks about insurance coverage at every visit and emphasizes its importance, I was surprised that insurance network compatibility was not taken into consideration when providing referrals. read more

I came to Capitol Hill Dental after a bad experience with another dentist who told me I needed a crown. I wanted a second opinion and saw Dr. Durgam, and I'm so glad I did. The experience here was much better--professional, thorough, and reassuring. I'll be coming here from now on. read more

Stay away from Dr. Alexandra Thomson. She cannot do much successfully outside of a cavity. Her typical solution is to pull teeth to solve dental issues. She will refer you to another individual to do this. On one occasion, I was in severe pain due to an infection and all she could suggest was to insert a needle with a pain killer into the swollen, tender, infected area. She had no idea how to solve the problem. I ended up going to another dentist. This is only one example. Again, stay away. read more

I just recently started going to Capitol Hill Dental Group a few months ago and after having so many issues with my former dentist, this team was truly a welcome surprise. Dr. Hodges immediately listened to my concerns and assessed my teeth (and bridges) issues unlike my previous dentist telling me i needed all this other stuff done before they would even start a treatment plan that would cover over a years' worth of work, Dr. Hodges immediately put a plan in place that will only take roughly a year - most of it waiting for my gums to heal for dental implants. When there was a misunderstanding with another dentist, Dr. Hodges immediately came up with an alternative so I would not have to walk around with missing teeth on both my lower right and left - and did not charge me for it which in all honestly, I would have paid anything. She has also assembled a wonderful and welcoming team both in the front of the office and her assistants. Great job by all! read more

I go here because they are very close to work and have always done a good job on my teeth. However, be sure to ask for an estimate before hand because they recently told me that I had no charge for recementing a crown that fell out, but 6 months later, I received a $300 bill for it. A few months later, I had to get a new crown for a different tooth after a root canal, and was told that the crown with insurance would not cost more than $900. Ended up getting a bill for $1500 a few months later. Good service, but dishonest on pricing and way overpriced read more

After a traumatic dental experience the dentist office became a 4-letter word in my world; thankfully a colleague referred me to CHDH! Dr. Thomas is just more than one of the most wonderful humans I've had the pleasure to meet, the entire staff from the Hygienist to the front office staff consistently display the most impeccable medical professional manor. I have to be one of the most annoying patients; I must have rescheduled my initial appointment four (4) times and every time, I was accommodated graciously and assured I was not a bother. I really appreciate the tender care and graciousness. Not to mention CHDG is proficient in all of the latest dental advancements, the office is bright and clean and most of all your dental health and comfort are an apparent top priority. After experiencing discomfort for a few weeks, I came to CHDG for a check up. Someone at my former workplace suggested them as a good place to go that was close to my home on the Hill. The office is located close to Cap South metro stop, but it's down a small alley and can be hard to find. The offices are very clean and full of state of the art equipment. I was very impressed with their technology. The dental assistants were very nice and I felt comfortable there. After some ex-rays and a tooth by tooth analysis, I was told that I would need TWO Root canals, 2 new crowns, three fillings, and some replacement fillings. The total cost for all this would be over 8,000 dollars! I was totally freaked out. I told them I didn't have dental insurance, and I am currently unemployed. They still insisted that all this work was imperative and that I needed to get it done ASAP. I left feeling sad and scared for my health. How would I come up with the 8 thousand dollars!!? My parents were suspicious. They told me to get a second opinion. We went to Dr. Reyonlds out in VA. His office was not as close, but they know him personally, and trust him. WOW Dr. Reynolds took a look at my teeth and said I DID NOT need any root canals, and that I only needed three fillings. I saved myself thousands of dollars, tons of pain, and unneeded dental work. I'm not sure if this dentist is just over cautious or just after patients money. I don't appreciate them trying to scare me into getting extra work done ESPECIALLY when I told them I was unemployed. I suppose going to the dentist will never be fun, but this group makes it as not-unpleasant as it can be. I've been going here for years and recently switched my kids to this practice from a supposedly "child-centric" practice that was poorly run and not very professional. Here, you'll find very professional, friendly, and courteous office staff. Once, when my insurance had changed and I forgot my card, they went out of their way to figure out my insurer and my coverage (just based on my employer's name) while I was getting my teeth cleaned. By the time I was done, it was all sorted out. The hygienists are very skilled and generally good at nudging me into better dental practices at home without making me feel like a disgusting heathen. And the dentists -- I believe I've seen each one -- are uniformly excellent at communicating with patients and treating them with respect and care. And as for my kids, they did better here than they did at the more child-centric place. read more

The offices are clean, the hygienists are professional and they utilize the latest technology. They take appointments as early as 7am, and when you get there you don't have to wait. Dentist was fine, but the front office blows. I called to confirm this dentist was covered by my insurance. The day of my appointment I brought the wrong insurance card. The fee was due at the time of service and I had already driven over there. They told me that I could pay via credit card and they would reimburse me within 6 weeks. So I went ahead with the cleaning. I called with my correct insurance information as soon as I got back to the office. Eight weeks went by and still no check. I called and they said they forgot to submit my claim. A couple months later I call again and they say they needed to submit a secondary claim. It has now been 7 months and I checked in with them today. They said they are not covered by my insurance and that I'm SOL. Lame. Wish I would have taken better notes. Didn't anticipate that I'd have such a problem... read more

Great group! I started going to CHDG on a recommendation last year after being lax for a few years on my dental checkups. I was nervous going in but the intake process was smooth, everyone was very friendly. The hygienist (Elaine) was amazing and had great "bedside manner" and was super friendly and easy to talk to. I didn't need a deep cleaning or anything to be fair, but she wasn't rough and the cleaning was as pleasant as a cleaning could be. Grace works the front desk and deals with administration things, she's great to talk to and is very helpful if I have questions with insurance, etc. She always greets me by name. I've had experiences with a number of other technicians there and they've all been thoughtful, present, and kind. They all are conscientious about your comfort and experience. I see Dr. Susan Hodges and truly can't recommend her enough. She is amazing, friendly, down to earth, funny, always brings great energy and attitude to a visit! Invisalign: I had been thinking about Invisalign for some time, and mentioned it during this first appointment. Dr. Hodges did a consult with me, decided I could take impressions for an "express 10" case, had a couple more visits for the impressions and treatment overview, and away we went. Dr. Hodges was never pushy throughout the process. Even at the clincheck (the last step before you hit "go") she wanted to make sure I was 100% on board with the treatment plan and reality of Invisalign before starting. She mentioned the major things to consider during treatment and I never really felt surprised by anything during this process. She is a good communicator. One thing I want to mention is that I never feel like I am getting an upsell here. I have asked about a number of things that would be an opportunity to do work that isn't totally needed, but Dr. Hodges really seems to advise on what's best for the health of your teeth and mouth and keeping your teeth healthy, and not doing things that are unnecessary. I feel like she is really looking out for what is going to keep me healthiest. TL,DR: Awesome people in a great practice, positive experience with Dr. Hodges and Invisalign. read more

Very quick turn around on a "cosmetic" emergency. Perfect for anyone who needs a dentist while living in the area. Dr. Woods was excellent in patching up one of my front teeth that is prone to chipping. Every year it usually chips and normally dentists just lazily re-fill it. It costs a good amount to fix so being charged for a five minute ordeal can be frustrating. However, Dr. Woods took the time to reset the area, which requires time and labor, and then refill it so the bond was stronger. She took the time in making it look good! I'm writing this close to the one year anniversary, and so far it has stood the test of time! read more

Love this office (Capitol Hill Dental Group) and love this dentist Dr. Norm Bouchard. I've been going here for years--just went again this morning. They are super quick and efficient. You are never in the waiting room long. The hygienists are always good and friendly and give me the pertinent tips I need to know for my personal dental health. They take videos and xrays of your teeth just as often as needed, but not every time which I appreciate. Then Dr. Bouchard comes in, and he's quick and friendly--and I almost always learn something as he drops tidbits of knowledge--fun! Love that these guys are good, thorough, and respect my time--get me in and out! They also do my husbands teeth (he has more issues than me and hates dentists) but he likes them too! The service was very robotic and impersonal. I received my bill and found out that they are not in the AETNA network after I specifically asked. That was the reason I chose to go to CHDG. Nobody said anything, I even offered to pay my portion of the bill after my session, and was told it should all be covered by my insurance. The bill came and was over $370. Very disappointed, and I strongly recommend going elsewhere, I have!!! read more

I saw Dr. Norman Bouchard at Capitol Hill Dental Group for the first time yesterday, and it was a great experience! I arrived a bit late to my appointment, and I didn't have the correct insurance card. Regardless, the woman at the front desk patiently figured out my dental insurance information and got it all plugged in. I was quickly ushered back to see the dental hygienist..I think her name was Miriam? Anyway, she was really friendly, efficient, and gentle. Finally, I saw Dr. Bouchard. He was very nice, and he took the time to share some really interesting information with me about my X-rays, the shape of my teeth, and what to do about grinding my teeth at night. I didn't feel like he was trying to rush me out of the office, despite the fact that I probably threw him off schedule by arriving late. Before seeing Dr. Bouchard, I had only ever seen my hometown dentist that I went to throughout my childhood, so I was a little nervous to go to someone new. But Dr. Bouchard was great. I wholeheartedly recommend him! read more

I highly recommend this dental group. They have more than just one dentist so making an appointment was easy to schedule and I did not have to wait long (maybe two weeks). I have been going to them for close to two years now. Their hours are also very flexible (you can be seen at 7am!). I have never had to wait long periods of time (greater than thirty minutes) either. I did wait twenty minutes one time, but I believe there was someone who was a fit-in and had tooth pain. That does not bother me as I was happy to note that if I needed to be fit-in there could be that possibility. I have never had any issues with insurance. While I did ask the receptionist if they took my insurance, I also contacted my dental insurance provider directly to re-confirm as they are ultimately the ones who make that decision. I have found them to be very affordable as well, as somethings (such as cavities) are not fully covered by insurance. read more

It can be difficult to get an appointment here in any short order of time, but that just speaks to the great work done by the staff and dentist. I set an appointment up via e-mail, and it couldn't have been easier. The office is bright, clean, and orderly. All patient forms are filled out digitally on iPads, and the front desk staff efficiently process insurance and payment info. I came here for a cleaning and exam right before the COVID-19 stay at home order, and even in the early days of the pandemic it was clear that the folks at Capitol Hill Dental Group were taking care to ensure sanitation and safety for both patients and staff. My dental technician was friendly, affable, and made me feel valued as a patient. The dentist herself did a great job explaining what she saw as potential issues with a few of my teeth and clearly laid out options. I'll certainly be back for my cleaning in the second half of the year! read more

A friendly front office and nurses, but the doctors are quick to suggest expensive procedures and highly impersonal. I had a form to fill out for work and after a 5 minute meeting with the dentist she declared my dental health unfit - despite the problem (wisdom teeth) giving me only 1 minor problem in 6 years. The dentist hastily signed the papers without a discussion. I would have liked to see more thought be put into my issue, especially considering the steep $140 bill. I've been going to this practice since 1988 when I was single and lived on the Hill, and even though I now live in Alexandria and have to either take the metro or park my minivan in their tiny little lot, I would never switch to another practice. Although Dr. Bouchard (the elder) was my main man for years when I started going there, I've been seen by each of the dentists numerous times and I don't even state a preference anymore. I like all of them! I won't repeat what everyone else has said in their reviews, except to reiterate that it is a great place to bring children--every single dentist is also a parent; the entire staff, including reception and financial, is professional and courteous; they work really hard to schedule appointments at your convenience and figure out your insurance benefits; they use nitrous oxide during procedures if you request it (no judging); they manage to spend time with you and make you feel special while you're in the chair, yet somehow they hardly ever run late or keep you waiting; and they stay up-to-date with the latest technology and procedures. Most importantly, when you have an emergency, and we've had our share, they can always get you in. Several years ago, my 12-year-old daughter suffered a broken front tooth when another child ran into her at school. Dr. Thompson was able to take her at 8:00 the next morning to start the restoration, schedule her for an emergency root canal downtown the same morning, and then finish the restoration that afternoon. She took amazing care of her and conducted her follow-up appointments for months afterward. She still asks about her when I see her! In my opinion, the only downside to this practice is their ridiculous parking lot, which is cramped and makes you feel like your car is a piece in a jigsaw puzzle. But if your car is in a jam, one of their staff will move it or another care for you and they never get a scratch. We just take the metro now, which is a block and a half away on the Orange line. I've recommended this practice to several coworkers over the years. It's great for people who work in the District even if they live in Maryland or Virginia because you can always get to an appointment before work or during the day. read more

The office is always busy and they do try to accommodate last minute appointments. But the whole office is very much assembly line, particularly if you are getting a cleaning. They insist, that you see the dentist every 6 months whether you like it or not and 9/10, I have to wait up to 30 minutes for the dentist to finish with another patient. If you go, insist that the dentist see you within 10 minutes of your cleaning since assume you have better things to do. They wanted to take Xrays and I said no unless you feel your dental condition has drastically changed. They're not reasonably priced and for the money ( a 25 minute cleaning and a 13 minute dentist "consultation", expect to pay over $200 bucks. Last visit to CHDG. This review is WAAAAAY overdue. I went here to get a cleaning since I was loosing coverage at the end of the month last june and wanted to get a cleaning since I had lost my dentist that i went to in VA. So as you all know I'm EXTREMELY picky. (And my teeth are very important to me. Did you know that tooth decay can lead to heart issues? So take care of your teeth!) Luckily, I found this place thanks to trusty yelp! (and it's only 5 blocks away from my home- SCORE!)For those of you on the metro it is down the street from Capitol South. While I will admit it was a little confusing finding the place; you have to walk through the alley then enter the building on the far right end and go upstairs; you will not be dissapointed when you arrive. The office is clean and bright. The front desk staff is warm and friendly and are totally used to fielding calls asking where the office is. I was promptly taken back to the chair where the dental hygenist prepped me for Dr. Sarah Bouchard. I was very impressed with the level of professionalism from all staff and their sincerity. Dr. Bouchard was such a pleasure! She listed attentively to my concerns. She even and double checked a tooth, in which I suspected my silver filling had cracked. Surely, enough she found a hairline crack. Most dentists write you off and dont pay attention-trust me I paid for that with a root canal in another tooth after complaining to other dentists about it. They have state of the art technology. Just about all x-rays are done in your chair. I can't wait to go back! read more

I have to say, I did not expect to end up at a dental office on vacation, but it happened. It's very unlikely that this could ever happened to me, bc i'm a careful person when out drinking and especially on vacations, but.... it happened. The night we arrived we had an accident while walking down the streets of D.C. My insurance does not cover dental work so everything comes straight out the pocket. My tooth had shattered and I had a busted lip from hitting the pavement. I didn't know who to go to, but luckily we had a paramedic and a guy with very thorough knowledge of the anatomy and medicine within our group, so they inspected it and such, to avoid the medical bill of going to the ER. I avoid ERs at all costs and especially oral medicine b/c it's just how i grew up. I looked up dental places close by and this was one of the places to go to. I was afraid and didn't know what to expect because my mouth and tooth looked and felt extremely painful and looked bad, however the front desk lady and the dentist did a great job at assisting me. I told her what happened and such, and they were very understanding. Dr. Thompson took the best route for me bc i didn't have the insurance to cover it, IMO. But to be on the safe side she recommended me to a specialist because the worst case scenario, according to Dr. Thompson, was a root canal. I got the 3-D x-rays done at the specialist downtown, where she recommended me, and good the good news. The next day i came back, and she filled and repaired my tooth. She did a great job, too, according to my general dentist. It didn't take as long as most dentists that I've encountered in the past, especially for something like this. She's a great dentist, very understanding and does a great job. If you're ever in town and have to get your teeth done, go see Dr. Thompson, she's wonderful! read more

I have been going to Dr. Bouchard for 15+ years. He is a wonderful dentist and I have referred at least 7+ people from my office to him. Pros: * Dr. Bouchard has always explained what he is doing and why and tries to do it in language that you can understand. He also often provides options and recognizes that there are aggressive and alternative approaches. * He has never push procedures or product on me. * His office has some very modern technology (digital radiography, digital health records, and the ability to mill porcelain fillings in the office) * His hygienists are of equally high caliber. If you even come to prefer one over another you can always ask for them by name (my preference was for Miriam) Cons: * Office is popular and busy. You'll need to schedule in advance. Dr. Bouchard will jump from patient to patient but when he is with you, he is with YOU. * Probably more expensive than other practices (I've been told). The latest technology probably isn't always cheap. You only have 1 set of teeth, it was worth the expense for me to see someone I trusted. * Office is a little hidden. I booked an appointment here three months in advance for a cleaning. When I called, I specifically asked if the cleaning would be in network with my copay on my insurance plan. The receptionist confirmed it would. When I showed up, they told me I was actually out of network and the cleaning would be more than $200. Very disappointing. Time away from work and three months wasted that I could have been waiting for an appointment elsewhere. read more

It had been 11 years since I went to the dentist and was more then a little afraid of the horrors that would fallow. None how ever did. Everyone was very professional and after the first cleaning my teeth where noticeably whiter. I only had 2 cavities and had those fixed last night. I also loved the music they had playing, I'm sure it was a satellite or internet radio but it was a great mix! I would not have expected to hear the Pixies while getting my teeth fixed but it made the experience that much better. I like that they showed and told me what was going on while they did things. I got to see gross pic's of my teeth and extras right way. Then when they where done the difference was amazing. I feel I could have been a great before and after ad campaign for them. Luckily my insurance covered most of it. My only complaint is that it's a little hard to find. read more

I should first start by saying that I LOVE GOING TO THE DENTIST. Nevertheless, the Capitol Hill Dental Group is amazing! When I moved to DC about two years ago I was looking for a dentist that would accommodate a business professional who works M-F, 9-5. This place is great because they have early morning appointments and usually get you in and out in about 30-45minutes. What I really appreciate about the Capitol Hill Dental Group is that they talk to you about your teeth and what they are doing. They make you feel involved in the process (i.e. showing you your x-rays and telling you what they see and what that means for you, giving you recommendations for better dental hygiene). The only downside is the location...it takes me 50-minutes on the bus to get to their office. But, I love it...so I'll keep going back (and it's only twice a year)! read more

I just went to this practice for the first time today and saw Dr. Susan Hodges-- she was fantastic! I hadn't been to the dentist in about 3 years, so I was really nervous about what they may find. Everyone there was so nice and made me feel comfortable. They were also very upfront about pricing. They checked to see what my insurance covered before proceeding with x-rays, and when I found out I have a couple of cavities and fillings that need replacing, they gave me a print out showing the estimated costs of what my insurance would cover and what I would owe out of pocket for these future appointments. Their prices are very reasonable. Dr. Hodges was very friendly, knowledgeable, and did a good job explaining the x-rays to me in layman's terms. She also cleaned my teeth herself! I've been a patient since I was a lowly Senate Staffer (1981). I love Dr. Bouchard who recently retired. I knew Dr. Bouchard who had children, one who also became a dentist and went into the practice! The dental assistants are always top knoch and they always have the latest equipment. This is the first time I've gone to the dentist where the actual dentist showed me how to, correctly, brush my teeth. It seems basic, but I received a lot of personalized attention at Capitol Hill Dental Group. I saw Dr. Sara Bouchard from the recommendation of a friend, because I'm always nervous about the dentist. Dr. Bouchard was thoughtful in asking questions, took her time and looked over my information carefully. All the staff I encountered were very nice, and the office was clean. I was so happy with them! The dental hygienist who did my cleaning was very friendly and did a good job (I don't remember his name). Then I saw Dr. Bouchard and she was incredible! I had two chipped teeth when I went in, but only had a cleaning scheduled. Dr. Bouchard was able to give me different options for the repair and then take me right after my cleaning. (Well she asked if I would mind waiting 10 minutes which I absolutely did not... I was grateful that they could fix them right away!) She did such a good job and talked me through the whole process while she was doing it so I always knew exactly what was going on and the teeth look completely natural and perfect. Overall it was just a very good experience.... they did a great job and were extremely nice on top of it. What more could you want! read more

So pleased with this practice. They are efficient, have flexible schedules (including many same- or next-day appointments), easy to contact and follow-up with, and very kind. I have been able to book appointments over email (a dream when trying to otherwise call during business hours), and even make appointments for 7am -- so I can get to work on time. He's patient and his explanations are in full detail. He never pushes any procedure. He gives you options, including waiting if it's safe to do so.
