The food is not tasty, not fresh and overpriced. $21 for essentially a simply sandwich and coffee (that pretty much tastes like frothy milk). I know food costs have gone up but that's too expensive for what I got. First the sandwich I received was not what I had ordered and paid for - something completely different. The sandwich I received had stale bread and the ham was regular deli meat you buy in the grocery aisle. The store offerings also reduced to basically a really long grocery shelf of chips. The service is mediocre with a stoic/rude cashier. The store ambience is cramped - which I didn't mind before when the food tasted good. There's a bin right where you collect your order which is very unappealing. I want to support the local community but I won't be returning anytime soon. I hope they can improve. read more

I've been here on two other occasions for lunch and and got a Caesar salad. Decided to order breakfast from there thru Uber Eats as I work nearby. After reading the reviews and realizing I had been here before, I was kind of anticipating a good breakfast. Not!!! I ordered the sausage, egg, cheddar, and siracha mayo. It didn't sound appealing in my head but after reading the "great" reviews, I was excited to get it. What a disappointment it was. I was introduced to this local shop by my family and it was the perfect breakfast stop! I wish I lived here, because I would be a regular at this place. I ordered the breakfast sammie with sausage, egg and sriracha mayo. It was delicious! The mayo is what really took this to the next level. The bread was light and fluffy. The shop itself had lots of snacks for purchase and regular grocery items. It was the perfect local convenience shop. I will make sure to come back here when I'm in town. The downside is it's small, so don't plan to eat inside or really here at all, but it's a walkable city, and there is plenty of places to walk around outside while enjoying your food/coffee. read more

Got the bacon egg avocado breakfast sandwich this morning. The bacon was barely cooked, which was gross, and I wound up picking it off. The sandwich was also really small (think McMuffin size lol) and wound up costing $9 plus tip with no side or chips. After ordering the mid sandwich I got handed this pamphlet on the way out. My siblings and I recently visited DC for about a week. Stayed at a location about a block from Union Kitchen. My first stop there I met Ronnie and we chatted for a few minutes. I went back each day we were there. Mostly in the mornings for coffee and breakfast sandwiches. This is one of the few places where I found great strong coffee. IMO, the coffee was fantastic!! Sadly, Union Kitchen Grocery has changed bagel purveyor. Now, it serves "bagel bites" (whatever the heck those are). Thus, one of the true gems in the neighborhood has been diminished. A coffee place that does not serve bagels is a no go for me. Moreover, they have started tinkering with the cookie recipe. Almost every time in the past couple of months that I have come in for cookies the taste and texture has been different. Not bad, but not the same as in its heyday. Fortunately, as of March 2018, they still brewed Compass Coffee. Five stars for the great service and coffee. I subtracted two stars since two of the main stars, bagels (real, whole ones not "bites") and the cookies, are in need of a do-over. read more

The front staff was extremely kind and accommodating to my family and I when we came, so I have to add a star for that. My rating is this low because the sausage in my sandwich was legitimately RAW on the inside. I ate about half of it before I noticed. I'm in Arlington visiting family and had to go on an airplane about 4 hours from when I had the sandwich. I was terrified of getting sick, my mom called and explained and the person who picked up the phone told her she was wrong, that it was fine and lots of people freak out about it. I've attached photos to show that it was in fact raw. I got sick to my stomach a few times in the next few hours. I'm ok now but waiting to see if I get food poisoning in the next 12-24 hours. My boyfriend and I stopped in as he lives a few blocks away. I found the prices to be (surprisingly) reasonable for sandwiches and salads. My boyfriend got the TAPs grilled cheese, which was more like a sandwich with melted cheese. It had a very tasty sauce that made it and the turkey portion was generous. I got a turkey goat cheese salad which was pretty solid. It normally comes with pickled onions but they let me swap that out for avocado! They also sell your basic staples- milk, snacks, frozen food, etc. Pro tip: this place is dog friendly! They have some out door seating and a dog bowl of water (and even some dog treats!) They have interesting items in the grocery section but you'll pay for it (beyond what seems to be explained by recent inflation). This place is adorable! It looks like a cute little upscale hipster bodega. My friend and I walked in and they have some groceries and sell sandwiches. We got a breakfast sandwich and a bagel bite. They also threw in an extra one so we got the Greek bagel bite and I think the garlic! They were super mini and delicious - you bite inside and the cream cheese comes oozing out. The breakfast sandwich was insane. We got a bacon avocado sandwich. Normally it comes on a potato roll but they ran out so they put it on a ciabatta roll. I feel lucky that Union Kitchen Grocery is in my neighborhood (Well, more than less. You can easily take a Capital Bikeshare from Capitol Hill East to Union Kitchen Grocery). Powered by DC's beloved Union Kitchen, Union Kitchen Grocery is like a hipster/yuppie bodega. It's close to Union Station and comes complete with DC made products and organic and natural products. If you need some fresh produce or a package of Krave beef jerky, this is your place. They also carry DC local products like Compass Coffee and Honest Tea (started and run just outside of DC in Bethesda). They even have a section that sells basic necessities like cold medicine and more artsy goods like DC art and cards. The best thing about Union Kitchen Grocery, is that it is a coffee shop too brewing the best of Compass Coffee. My latte was on par with DC favorites like Maketto and Peregrine and my fresh out of the oven giant chocolate chip cookie was the BEST I've had in DC. They have one area of bar seating by the window that seats 6 (or 4 comfortably). They offer free, strong wifi. This is my neighborhood store. When I need coffee, sandwich, something quick on the way home from work this is where I go. Their coffee is solid (better than the place around the corner for sure), prepared food is very tasty and there are about 3 sandwiches that are so good I can't seem to buy a different one! But what stands out the most are the people. They know my name and I know theirs. They are good honest people and hard workers who take the time to make you feel welcomed. So this place is my absolute GO-TO spot for cookies! Seriously. They have this chocolate chip oooey gooey cookie that is ah-maz-innnnnnggggg!!! (I'm sure that's not the official name for it but never mind that. They'll know what you're talking about if you ask for it)! These things are super soft and almost melt in your mouth. This has been my favorite find in dc since moving two years ago! All the employees remember your name as well as what you order and seem to know everyone who walks in the door. Their team is honestly the friendliest in DC. They also have a Pet friendly hook outside the front door if you are stopping while walking your dog. I'm moving to the other side of union station and honestly union grocery being more than a 10 minute walk is what gave me pause. We grabbed lunch from Union Kitchen a couple of times while we were in town visiting. The impetus for coming was largely due to proximity (on the same block we were staying), but I'm glad that we made the stop. The entrance is unimposing and looks small, but inside, there's a fully functioning sandwich shop and bakery, as well as a small grocery store that is very handy for picking up snacks, drinks, and other smaller items. Getting food to go is easy, and sandwiches generally didn't take more than 5 minutes or so to prepare. I got variations of the BLT both times; the original was nice and light, if a bit heavy on the lettuce, but I liked the slight twist the sriracha in the mayo gave to the sandwich. The turkey BLT was a hefty sandwich, as the amount of turkey in the sandwich is a good portion, to put it kindly...you definitely won't be hungry after finishing that! There is also a soup rotation; I did try the Thai chicken soup once, and that was a good balance of flavor and spice, i.e. the latter was at a very manageable level. For anyone looking for a straightforward deli-style spot that also has some extra things to snack on, Union Kitchen is a good place to come for a bite.
