Hot Pastrami: 8/10 This is my first time ever trying Pastrami and I just say I see why it's so popular, I'm glad Mikey and Mel's was my first pastrami because it set such a high standard. I loved every bite. I just wish I would have known to get it toasted. The regular white bread isn't doing it for me but that's minor. Always a solid breakfast here and this time I got the SW scramble, subbing in bacon for sausage. Not sure why they don't cook the cheese with the eggs, they kinda lay it on top and expect it to melt. I finally got to visit again. This time I ordered the turkey breast Reuben, and it was absolutely delicious. I got the 1/4 pound sandwich, which was a bit pricier than their other 1/4 pound sandwiches. The Russian dressing was absolutely amazing on the sandwich. I will order it again. I still need to retry the whitefish sandwich, probably the chunky one next time. Their potato latke is still amazing, and it's probably one of the best I've tried. This order was supposed to go to a family grieving from a loss of family member. 6.1.25 It's been several years since I was last here. Unfortunately the food was not as stellar as my first visit. I ordered half a pastrami sandwich on white and fries. I did not know that you have to request that the bread be toasted. Also, there was not enough dressing, so my sandwich was dry. In hindsight, those could've been easily addressed had I asked for them. The fries were good as well as the chocolate chip cookie that I got which was warm. Our server was attentive and came around to check on us. Being the germaphobe that I am, I appreciated seeing a staff member wiping down the menus. I don't recall in past years if online reservations were available or if you had to be seated so that was new to me. Also, I believe that the pickle bar is a new addition since my last visit. I like that their menu is extensive and there is something for everybody. When I first walked into Mikey & Mel's, the bakery counter at the front was to my eye's delight! Rugalachs, brownies, bakalava, oh my! Yes, some of that did come home with me. A bit of a wait for lunch on Sunday but all worth it. I got the salmon platter with fries. The fries were like the boardwalk fries -- limpy and soft. I would have liked more crispy fries. The platter was a big portion of smoked salmon with big slices of cucumber, red onion, and tomatoes. I wasn't sure how I was going to eat this so I just started cutting up all the vegetables into smaller pieces and making myself a salad. I couldn't finish at the restaurant but was more than happy to eat the rest for dinner that night. I also noticed as we were being shown to our table that there was a pickle bar. How come no one told me there was an all you can eat pickle bar? I love anything fermented! There was such a great assortment of pickles, I think I tried everything and the horse radish pickle was my favorite. I would come back to M&M for the pickle bar alone! The baklava was filled with raisins. At first I thought I had the wrong order because I've never had fruit in a baklava before but apparently, you can. I have nothing against raisins, but it wasn't labeled as such at the counter and I still prefer this sweet pastry with only nuts. The rugalachs were delicious. You can order three at a time and it doesn't have to be the same three. Here's your chance to try the variety that they have. I got the chocolate, raspberry, and honey pecan. We are long-time patrons, of both this and the downtown location. We've spent more money here than we could possibly count. At a minimum, we are regulars at the cruise-in, and until now, have never failed to patronize the inside for full breakfast during the car events, and other times as well. Unfortunately, this past Saturday will be our last. Here is why. First, we are senior citizens. And vintage car fanatics. And we appreciate a good meal, and don't mind paying for quality food and service. Foremost, we would never "cheat" anyone out of anything, at any time or any place, for any reason whatsoever. We certainly don't need to do that and have absolutely no motivation to do so. But this past Saturday, our waiter very rudely, unnecessarily, and obnoxiously accused us of "cheating the system." Let us explain. Some background - the portions at M&M are huge. A single omelet with sides and bread is more food than any person would, could, or should eat in one sitting. In all of our years of visiting, a box is always necessary to take home leftovers. While on the subject of the food, we agree with other reviewers - the food is nothing particularly special or noteworthy. It is okay - just okay - and there is plenty of it - as noted, huge portions. Now, on the menu, on the second page, for the sandwiches, there is a note about a $2.50 charge for sharing a plate. No such note for the breakfast page. But a minor technicality. We did not come to M&M to share a plate. Simply to enjoy a quiet meal, mindful that the Cruise-In (which always draws a huge crowd) was cancelled because of rain - but we came in anyway, which we did not have to do - but we did. And we ordered two meals - one, the omelet, and the other, a bagel with cream cheese, plus drinks (coffee). As anticipated, the omelet plate arrived, heaped with the huge omelet and enough home fries to feed a small army, plus a bagel. And the other, the bagel, heaped with a generous schmear of cream cheese. Certainly, more food than two senior citizens (or any two humans) could consume. So, about a third of the way into tackling our food, my wife says, "would you like some of my omelet - it's way more than I can eat ..." So, I reach over and take a small (about 1/3rd) amount of her omelet. No home fries, none of her bagel - just a small portion (a tasting, you might say) of her omelet. It's at this point that things get creepy. As if he was watching, our waiter appears at our table, hovers over it, and says, "NICE WAY TO CHEAT THE SYSTEM." We honestly had no clue what he was referencing. Undeterred, he continued - "Normally, my manager would tell me to charge you for sharing, but my manager isn't here today, so I'm going to let it go for now." And he continues - he won't leave us alone - he now continues to explain that he is doing us a favor by not charging us for sharing a plate. But ... we aren't sharing a plate. It's not like we walked in, ordered one sandwich, and asked to split the order for two people. We ordered two separate meals - an omelet, and a bagel (the bagel, when caked in cream cheese, is a meal unto itself at M&M). Okay, to follow the waiter's logic - we are "cheaters" who deliberately and intentionally came to M&M - on a day when a large event was cancelled and only about 5-6 other patrons were in the restaurant - and devised a complex scheme to "cheat" M&M out of a $2.50 plate-sharing charge. Whomever is right or wrong in this situation, first, we are long-time customers (no more). Second, it's creepy that the waiter was watching what we were eating, and how. Third, it's not what you say, but how you say it - and he clearly was accusing us of cheating the establishment and its "system." We understand plate-sharing charges - obviously, if someone comes into a restaurant and takes up a seat, when the restaurant is at or near capacity, it takes revenue from the restaurant when that person eats from someone else's plate. But, we have news for M&M - that happens all the time (how many children don't finish their food and dad eats the fries?). Plus, what would have happened if we had ordered take-out, and then once home, decided to split the meal? Would our hero waiter follow us home and burst in, to accuse us of cheating the system? Compare this situation, for example, to the menu at another car-event place, the Iron Rooster, known to many vintage car enthusiasts because of the Saturday Hunt Valley Horsepower event. Their menu includes "items for sharing ..." Maybe (apparently) it never occurred to M&M to downsize their portions or otherwise recognize that their portions are large enough to share. But we are not here to advise or counsel M&M on best practices for serving omelets. We simply are calling out a waiter for a rude and offensive comment, and generally, for creepy behavior. We "cheaters," therefore, will be taking our business elsewhere. Where, I may even steal a bite from my wife's plate. read more

Finally tried this deli and I must say I can see why they have these glowing reviews. I can't believe it took me this long to try this place as I don't live that far away. I didn't even realize there was this much seating inside. I was craving a sandwich during lunch yesterday. I decided to place an online order for a Mikey corned beef reuben with a side of chips. I ordered it without the thousand island dressing (just never been a fan). I got the russian dressing on the side. There's a pickle bar and a full dessert menu! They have a big breakfast menu as well. I had gotten a text letting me know that my order was ready. There was definitely a lunch rush, and it was super busy, but I didn't have to wait too long for someone to help me get my order. I really enjoyed this sandwich, and it was filling. Representing November in the 2024 photo series is Mikey & Mel's. My girlfriend & I tried Lib's Grill 9 days earlier. I saw Mikey & Mel's and was curious. We had a long Maple Lawn walk with a Meetup group at 12 PM on Sunday, November 3. Some of them were going for food here afterwards at like 2 PM. Going beforehand was better as we didn't want to eat brunch/lunch that late especially after daylight savings just ended. So, we got there at about 11 AM (which really was 12 PM on daylight time). I asked how the timing would be if we need to be out by 12, they said fine. It was not an issue. Service was relatively fast. I got the Omelet, which was excellent. However, they left off the pastrami, but they were quick to remedy. I said just give the meat on the side, and I'll throw on. They gave a generous amount, more than would be in the omelet, which I appreciated. The mushroom, avocado, & pastrami omelet was outstanding. As for the potatoes & bagel, it was a bit underwhelming. The potatoes had a weird flavor, maybe the seasoning. The bagel was very good, but it was a bit more well done than I like. Server was also friendly, knowledgeable, & answered all my questions as well as fast except with the water refills; so we ended up going up for more water to the soda machine. It's also a cute place in terms of decorations. I'd come back for a Corned Beef or Pastrami sandwich at some point as the meat from the omelet was great. Additionally, maybe about 2 months ago, my friend who lives in Arlington mentioned this cool Jewish deli called Mikey & Mel's that just opened in downtown DC. The service was good and fairly quick and the ambiance nice though we came in from the back of the building where the parking area was and had to walk to the front. It was a very odd setup. Couldn't find a menu of drinks so asked about and ordered a Dr Brown's Black Cherry and my friend ordered a Chocolate Egg Cream. Both drinks came out quickly and were delicious. We both ordered hot corned beef, she ordered a 1/4 and I ordered a 1/2. The corned beef was good and fairly lean. I ordered mine on a challah roll and that was a huge mistake. It was ok, but the sweetness of the challah roll and the corned beef was not a good combination. Back to corned beef on Rye in the future. Good food, reasonable prices and a good place. Well, the coddies were nothing like the real thing, but at least the attempt was made. Then the moment we all waited for, the arrival of That delicious juicy corned beef on that real Jewish rye. Now, I must say, the if you did not know what old fashion corned beef was, then you would think this was good stuff. That being said, all at the table were dissapointed. The Rye bread, looked like white loaf bread with some carraway seeds sprinkled in it that fell apart when trying to eat it. The corned beef was dry and chewy, and near flavorless. Our server was very apologetic. She spoke with the chef and brought us replacement corned beef. Unfortunately, more of the same. No one at the table finished their sandwiches. They threw the old one away, so it wouldn't cross contaminate. That is taking care of your customer. They gave me this gigantic gluten-free brownie. Today I got a couple items I've never had before: a spinach knish and brisket fries. The knish was just ok. Nice and warm, like I like it, and full of spinach, which I love, but the spinach wasn't really seasoned, so the whole thing was a bit bland. The brisket fries were really good. I barely ate half before I was full. The brisket itself was cooked well--soft and not cooked to death. The onions weren't fried, like the description online reads; they were more sautéed until soft. Not a complaint, it was still delicious, but not as advertised. There was the right amount of cheese, too--not overwhelmingly cheesy so it took over the whole thing. The meat and fries stood out as the star, as they should. Service was a bit slow for a pickup, imo. I went around 1:30 and there were customers in there, but the pickup line was empty so I went right to it. The rye bread was very fresh, the mustard was a normal deli.mustard, and the corned beef was first cut very flavorful and very enjoyable. The french fries however, were mushy, cold, and soggy. The pickles. When we finally got the pickles, the plate contained a full sour, a half sour, and dill pickle chips. The full sour was a very well executed pickle. Just enough fermentation, ample crunch, and great flavor. The pickle chips were also crunchy flavorful and very well executed. The half sour was disappointing. It needed longer in the brine. I realllllly wanted to like this place. The best thing was the latke mini melts. Tasty, kind of like a stuffed potato skin, but latkes instead. A little heavy tho. For my main, I got the Smoked Salmon Florentine benedict. I could barely eat one, and wasn't interested in more of that flavor, so didn't take the other one home. The latke was thick (like 3/4 inch?) and kind of soft. It would have been better if thinner and crispier. The fish was not lox as I expected from "smoked salmon"... it was more like a cooked fish filet with kind of an odd flavor (hard to describe). I got the fruit salad as the side and it came in a tiny condiment cup, just a few pieces. Was disappointing. The coffee was eh... tasted like cheap coffee that someone brewed a giant pot of in the office. It came to the table with prepackaged creamers. We tried some of their pickles too which were eh. The half sour was salty and boggy. I was overall underwhelmed by the food. The staff were nice, the menu was cute. Omelette was plentiful, and they come with a choice of potatoes, or tomato wedges, bagel or toast. Service was quick and the quality of the food was excellent. Coffee was hot and tasty. I would have expected the place to be busier, but it was 1000 am of a Friday. It was starting to pick up as it got closer to lunch.
