If you're looking for a nursery in Evergreen, be sure to check out Capitol Wholesale Nursery. I grew up near it and had no idea this nursery existed. This nursery is located in a residential neighborhood. When you arrive at the nursery, you'll see there are some blocks of wood so you can drive up to the nursery and park if your car isn't low. My car is a bit low so I just parked across the street and walked in. There are plenty of plants and trees to choose from. I like how they put most of their items in alphabetical order. The prices aren't listed on the pots, but there's a QR code you can scan to get pricing. I met Cathi during my visit and she was really nice. She explained where everything is located and made me feel welcomed. I will definitely come back and bring my dad with my next time. read more

Tucked in an East SJ suburb, CWN is a no-nonsense nursery where you can get quality CA native plants to fruit trees to a wide array of ornamental plants. Just don't ask them for any sort of herbs. Extensive selection of plants, in different sizes, alphabetically arranged according to scientific names, at extraordinarily reasonable prices. The area with plants seems to stretch over an entire acre. So that's great, but the truly extraordinary thing is that, after wandering around for an hour, looking at most everything, I never saw a single wilted or unhealthy looking plant. (well, not strictly true: there was one indoor plant at the front desk which looked a bit bewildered.) Staff were helpful. Also, another extraordinary thing: Before visiting I had emailed a question asking about the availability of a particular plant, and within 2 days received a specific reply. IMHO This wholesale nursery is located within a residential neighborhood. You could easily drive by it so keep your eyes open. Huge variety. If you can't find what you want, I'm sure they could get it for you. Plants are nicely organized and well taken care of. No prices are listed anywhere... We were far away from the front office, so my husband called from his cell to ask for a price! I'm assuming that since this is a wholesale nursery, landscapers get better prices than regular retail customers, thus no visual pricing. Okay, I get it. Service is friendly and informative. Some were barely sprouted, certainly nowhere near full 1 gallon pots. I just figured it was early in the perennial season. I very much cared for all my plants equally, and these two didn't make while still in the pot. The Deer grass will probably recover, the yarrow doubtful. Prior to this incident I was bragging to all my plant friends what a great nursery I discovered, that certainly isn't messaging I am repeating now. INCREDIBLYSHOCKED. I asked if I could be taken to the location of a specific plant. The older man would only show me on the map, after requesting 3 TIMES and explaining I had a learning disability. Since he was NOT willing to take me to find it I asked if he would write it down for me. I took the note and as I was walking away he barked Your Welcome. My reply to him was that I asked 3 times to be taken to the location and now for the 2nd time in front of many customers I had to repeat my disability, only then did he march in front of me insinuating it was my fault when I told him at no point was I being rude, but now I'm irritated, not mean or rude. I recently decided to landscape my front yard to make it drought tolerant, thanks to Capitol Wholesale nursery, I was able to find some relatively large size plants for relatively better prices (although some are not). A few things if you are also doing similar things I did: 1. They don't mark prices at all. So you need to spend some extra time to look online and search for the exact name and pot size. Sometimes the pot size is confusing and label missing. Conclusion: be patient about this process. 2. Compares to every other consumer facing nursery out there, there is no information on how much watering a plant needs, how much sun, planting instructions, information we may all appreciate and find helpful. Workers mind their own business and it's 100% self serve. 3. If you order bulk, all they ask you is to pull the plants out, so they can collect them and deliver them for a fee which is pretty convenient. Was told worker was supposed to call between 8-9am but never called and showed up unexpectedly for delivery, which wasn't convenient. 4. After looking at some other plant shops (lowes ect) I noticed they mark some ferns more expensive than Lowes. Conclusion: be careful about what you purchase, make sure you compare prices, I know it will add more work. 5. No discount is given no matter how much you purchase. I purchased $1000+. Hope these tips are helpful for you! For me, I personally wouldn't go back for anything small unless I order a specific type of plants for bulk again. It is totally not worth the hassle to and maybe save a few bucks on some plants, but have to deal with a lot of inconveniences. Just one last thing I wanted to share: the male worker (with a pair of glasses) at the cash register was rude. I went to return two plants, and didn't know what I should do given it was a wide open area with lots of gravels. I asked if I should bring the plants here (vs. put them somewhere near a forklift truck?), the worker said yeah, probably. I thought it was weird, so I asked for clarification and he said yes here. I brought the two 5 gallon plants over (heavy!) and put them next to the counter area I was standing at, he said to move them out of the way. And I was more confused, looking at the open space around me with plants, I asked him exactly where so I can put them. He repeated again saying just somewhere out of the way. At that moment I just didn't feel right about this interaction and thought he was rude. So I asked him to let me return, and left the nursery. He almost forgot to return me back my original receipt. Maybe it's a Friday afternoon and he is having a bad day, but I certainly didn't feel like I was talking to a professional worker. Came home and described the situation to my bf and he said the worker was being sarcastic when he said "probably" when I asked if I should bring the plants over. read more

I am so glad I finally made the trip out to Capitol Wholesale Nursery! Kind staff, huge selection, and great pricing. They took my contractor's license and honored the discount the same day I applied for it, which hasn't been the case at other stores. I went yesterday, found most of what I needed, went to check out, and inquired about ordering additional things. I was informed they actually had EVERYTHING I needed in stock at their other lot. They pulled the additional plants for me, and I was able to pick up the next day. I really appreciated that. They said they take care of their contractors, and I definitely believe it! It is obvious that this place caters mostly to pros, so I would not recommend this place to novice gardeners. Hire a designer or a contractor to help you if you want to buy plants here. We went here since we like to support local business. But the staff at check out was exceptionally rude and snappy. We had a few plants with us already, about to checkout and was looking for a couple more specific plants. She got unnecessarily snappy with sharp replies. It was not even busy / crowded, we were the only folks on the checkout line. We lost interest to shop there any more. We really did not want to buy the ones I had grabbed thus far. I went to Capitol Wholesale Nursery this morning and I interacted with three different representatives. They were almost bothered by my presence there. I left this place literally SHOCKED about how didn't want to sell any product to me or any other person in the nursery. To the owners, it is time to address the elephant in the room: your employees are orribile at their job. Read the other reviews and take actions. You make people want to stop help small businesses and run into big box store with your unprofessional way to lead this nursery. read more

Customer service is horrendous here, everyone is grumpy, and you will be especially lucky to get "helped" by the rudest middle aged woman I think her name is Teri. The only positive thing is that they have a pretty good selection. You are totally on your own if you come here though, so don't expect to get any help or advice. Also expect to wait a minimum of 30 minutes just to check out even if there's one person ahead of you. They have a slow system typing each item in one by one and cantankerous while doing it. I purchased a couple grand worth of plants here and a few have failed to thrive. Note that they will not replace plants that don't survive. read more

This is my native CA plant go-to. If they don't have it, they can get it! Very knowledgeable staff and you can bring your list of plants or a book and they will find and get you the plants! Nice selection of plants, but there were 3 grumpy guys working on the cold morning that I showed up. Two of them were straight up unfriendly and didn't seem interested in helping a new customer out. I would only go back here if I couldn't find what I was looking for elsewhere. When buying hundreds of dollars worth of plants, one shouldn't need to deal with attitude and admonishment from the staff. I have purchased plants from Capitol Wholesale for almost 10 yrs. I have a large property with succulent gardens, fern gardens, grass areas, slopes, and vegetables. I used to purchase all my plants from local retailers (Ruth Bancroft, Annie's Annuals, etc) as well as other wholesale nurseries. Currently, I only will purchase from Capitol. Capitol always supplies amazing quality, healthy, beautiful plants. Indeed, I stopped using other wholesalers since they would sometimes send me plants of disappointing quality or size. Capitol will give me a personal phone call if they are not happy with the way a plant looks when it arrives at their nursery and will recommend a different size or send a different (better quality) plant. Capitol will also source rare, hard to find plants. And if they can't source the plant (think coronavirus-induced shortages), then they will come up with wonderful substitutes (indeed some of my favorite garden specimens are recommendations from Capitol!). Their customer service is impeccable. Robert, Terri, Gayle, and Mike have an encyclopedic knowledge of everything botanical and the only thing more amazing than their plant acumen is their lovely professional and courteous communications! read more

This place is an awesome use of space (under tall electric lines). It's a lil weird to find because it's located in a neighborhood (and has limited business hours - not open Sundays). That being said, John, the guy who helped us, was really knowledgeble and helpful. He looks like an all-star athlete or something but really knows his business. Capitol Wholesale Nursery offers 3 price scales but even if you don't make it into the contractor pricing, they might offer good discounts. They also deliver for free. There's a large inventory on site that's always receiving new stuff and they can get anything you want. I was really pleased with my experience here. Even though I was just outfitting my personal yard, John took me around and we talked about any shrub that was an option I might have been interested in. I'd definitely go back.
