Crab legs, clam chowder and drinks! I'm there for it! I love the staff here, so welcoming. The ambiance puts you in mind of a neighborhood bar. The service is great and the drinks are heavy-handed. Crab legs are spicy and messy just like they are supposed to be, and clams are delicious, served raw on the half shell or steamed. The service was fair. The menu had very few selections. No entrees, only appetizers. The mussels were precooked and served ice cold. Both stews were horrible and not as described in the menu. The oysters tasted canned and they were floating in diluted milk, the menus said a thick creamy, buttery base. The fireplace and the piano player were the only nice things. Stopped in on a Friday night at 6PM and the place seemed a little sparse. We were greeted immediately and promptly seated and that's when it all went off the rails. We waited uncomfortably for 15 minutes for someone to approach us, and while the bartender looked over numerous times, unfortunately, it seems the rest of the staff left the premises. We had been wanting to try here for awhile but never worked out... glad we didn't give up. It was classic and quirky. The food was excellent as was the service. The place was quiet but it was an off time of day. There was nothing fancy but the food was great and fresh. We had oysters, clams, soup, a beer, and wine. Place has a lot to desire. Exterior looks rundown interior is dark and dreary. Soups were not impressive taste like can. Shrimp was shrimp not impressed because old bay was put on. The stew was a runny soup. Stew implies that some thick consistency should be served. The wait service was excellent, polite and on point. I guess if you want to go and have some drinks and have a subpar meal it's great if that's your thing. read more

If you go make sure you have a reservation or you will wait a longtime, we did have a reservation when we were seated it took 20 min to get a beverage order in. were ordered bottle bear, when it came out, she brought us Draft Beer in a glass, not a deal braker. but pay attention on what the person orders. we ordered soup, clam soup and crab bisque. The clam soup came out 15 min later was told the crab bisque was being made "New Pot"" then 15 min latter was told they were out of the Crab Bisque, so we ordered the clam soup, again another 15 min waiting when it did come out it was ICE COLD..... The clam half shell even with them they were not prepared as they should have. but what comes out little necks which was ordered were so small and not hot as they should have been, they should have been put into a sauce. The only thing was good was the peal shrimp they were hot and good. Wish I only ordered the Shrimp. Will never go back again. This is not the first time I have been there. Mother dear led us on a wild goose chase... Turns out the destination was purrrty sweet!! The location of this place is along one of them "Old Towne" roads in one of Jerseys country towns. We came here on a chill Monday afternoon, so the place was pretty calm. Decor pleasant to the eye! Ordered a serving of snow crab legs, clams, and shrimps. The lady serving us was very kind. The food was ready in a decent amount of time and boy was it delicious!! Everyone enjoyed their portions. The quality of food to match the pricing was nearly spot on. I didn't get the analytics lol. Been coming here for years. Recently new staffed as far as I can tell. Always sit at the bar never a problem now wait up to 20 mins for a drink with about 10 people sitting at bar. Not always but the bartender tonight long black hair with glasses (Alyssa) absolutely horrible and I am not one to complain but wow ridiculous.food was over streamed and cooked. Waited 20 minutes for the check after not getting a drink for an additional 20 so 40 minutes with no service at a bar... I can go to the divest bar I know and get better service, food and drinks sad to say because I used to come here at least 2 times a month but after tonight I will not return. read more

My husband's favorite seafood restaurant. Cap'n Cat's doesn't waste your time with fillers - this is straight seafood. No salads, no vegetables to take away from your filling your tummy. They do have a small non-seafood menu(wings, fries, chicken fingers, personal pizzas, etc) for those who don't eat seafood. I go only because I know of hubby's love of all sea creatures. On our most recent visit, our party had whiting (3lbs), 55 shrimp, a crab leg combo, New Zealand mussels, chicken wings and seasoned fries and a pretzel brownie dessert. All the food was delicious as usual. The service was good with the server checking on us throughout the meal. They also have a bar and an attached liquor store. The restaurant does get busy at times so you may have a little wait at certain times, especially if you have a larger party. Sorry, no pics of the wings, fries or dessert. My own request, combos for wings/fries and other non seafood items would be nice. One order of wings and fries is too much for 1 person and I hate to waste food. read more

My mussels were delicious from here, lobster left alot to be desired but the tiramisu "that all the customers love for years." Was covered in mold!! . I wasn't rude to the waitress so I don't understand why she would serve me something that looks so sloppy & unhealthy. Then she had a passive aggressive time about it, I almost flew off the handle. The drinks are pretty bad though, I'm almost positive the margarita had no alcohol in it and was way too much money even if it did have alcohol for the size. This is my favorite restaurant and I have been coming here for 30 years. In all of that time I have never had such bad service. The waitress didn't even get us water for 30 minutes. Then when we asked she brought that and didn't come back for another 20. Then when we asked for glasses for our beer, we got coffee mugs and she took my water, never to return it again. We asked for napkins and had to take them from a table. I drove 45 minutes for my favorite crab and shrimp...but I think that maybe this place has jumped the shark. Took my sweetheart to Cap'n Cat's the other night to get his seafood fix. I have to say, our experience was really awesome. Remember, I'm not much of a seafood fan, but Cap'n Cat's just about converted me. I got the soup of the day- Corn Crab Chowder which was ABSOLUTELY amazing. We got clams, shrimp and a HUMONGOUS tray of crabs. The clams were, well, clammy and my honey loved them. The shrimp were really, really good. I normally don't like shrimp, but these were so fresh and cooked perfectly, they didn't have that rubbery texture that shrimp usually have. I have to say though, although the trays of clams and shrimp were good, they were waaaaay overpriced. But the freaking crabs, OMG, AWESOME- for 45 bucks there's a mix of Dungeness, King and Snow crab that will make your inner crab lover weep. There was so much crab my boyfriend and I couldn't eat it all. We brought the leftovers home and still couldn't eat it all the next day. If we had known how much crab we were getting, we wouldn't have ordered the shrimp or clams. Overall, the food was really good, although a little pricey. I had forgotten how cool the restaurant was inside. It's done up to look like a log cabin lodge kinda deal- very unique for this area. It was also cool because they had a dude doing live piano music right in the dining room. The awesomest thing about Cap'n Cat's is the ladies' bathroom. It's one of those one person deals, except it's not. It's the funniest thing I've ever seen- there's two toilets, side by side. Just WEIRD. The restaurant also gets points for being really clean and having great service. Our waitress was really cool. Very attentive without hovering. We were there for a couple hours trying to put a dent in our crabs and toward the end of the meal we got to talking with her. Food is always great in my opinion. However 3 stars for service. Takes way too long to be seated, stood at the entrance for several minutes while servers acted like we weren't there. Once seated another 15 almost 20 minutes passed before our server came over apologizing. The service was not bad once it got started. It was not extremely busy in there, so in my opinion our table could have been checked on (drink refills etc) a little more often. The highlight of the evening was a piano playing lounge singer, which we did not know would be there. Not that he was bad (not great either) just very loud if you wanted to have a conversation at the table. Also, he said, "I don't care what y'all think I'm gonna sing this song" and belted our an R. Kelly hit "ignition". Bad taste in my opinion. Personally, I would prefer to return when there is no live entertainment. Found this place on a camping trip with my fiancé and we loved it from the beginning. We were looking for a bottle of wine and found so much more. I tell people that there are four things on the menu... crabs, crabs, crabs or crabs (maybe with some clams) but it's all delicious. I don't know if I've ever stuffed myself so full. While their menu isn't fancy, they do everything they do really well and at a great value. We have never been disappointed when we eat here. I was torn between 3 and 4 stars, but 4 won for one reason: Cocktail sauce. Let's face it, the main reason you'd visit here is for the cocktail sauce--even if you don't know that yet. I rarely use all caps, but in this instance it is required: WARNING--use only a dot of cocktail sauce until you find your correct dosage. You gotta trust me on this one. Regulars can always spot newbies--they are the ones with the stifled coughs--and sometimes out-loud coughs--after their first cocktail sauce encounter. If cocktail sauce is the main reason for the visit, then steamed shrimp is a close second. If everything else in this restaurant/bar were zero stars, it would still get four because of the shrimp and cocktail sauce. The interior is quirky and dark. The liquor store that is attached is small and unique--you can find the oddest things in this liquor store so make sure you wander through it. The deceased owner Joe was a sweetie...but that was eons ago and passed away with Joe. But we're not here to break bread with the owners. Ordinarily, the seafood is fresh. On occasion--and very few occasions--the King Crab was previously frozen and the meat would be glued to the shell, rendering it too secure to break free and consume. But the mussels, clams, oysters, dungeoness crab, and the SHRIMP, soups and bisque are top shelf, hands down, one of the best I've ever tasted. If you are looking for side dishes, salads or bread, look somewhere else. This is straight seafood. No frou frou dishes like crab imperial or stuffed whatever. Seafood Straight Up. We always wind up spending a lot, but it is worth it. I dinged a star because the service can be sporadically bad, but frequent enough where getting annoyed is a possibility. The drinks are small and overpriced. And you have to be a hard core seafood lover to not miss the breads, salads, and side dishes. I'm thinking the professional seafood lover would rate this easily 4 stars. But the entire experience is grand enough that we have a Christmas tradition of eating here.
