Capo's has officially become one of my go-to spots in SF when I'm missing Chicago! My husband, a friend, and I came with our dogs and sat outside. We definitely ordered way too much food, but I'm not mad about it. We had the Italian beef pizza, meatballs, Caesar salad, broccolini, artichokes, and cannoli, plus some delicious cocktails. Everything was fantastic. The food honestly made me nostalgic and a little homesick for Chicago. There's something about those familiar flavors that immediately takes you back home. And I have to specifically call out their Chicago-style Italian beef sandwiches. Capo's has become my go-to in SF whenever I'm craving one. I've tried others, and for me there really is no comparison -- this is the real deal. If you know Chicago Italian beef, you know there's a difference! Capo's is such an underrated gem in SF! We've been here a few times, and the food and service have always been consistently great. The fried calamari is a must-order for us: crispy, well seasoned, and not overly greasy. Definitely try it with their spicy olive oil because the combination is SO good. Service was also excellent. We were originally seated outside but decided we'd rather sit indoors, and the staff was super accommodating with moving our group. Great food, warm service, and an overall solid dining experience. Everyone from the host to the busser takes extreme care in making sure their guests are laughing, smiling, and having a grand time. This pizza place in the big leagues and after your first bite, you'll see why. The sauce taste like Nonna made it, and combined with. We ordered the "Johnny Torrio" deep-dish pizza, which is loaded with Italian beef, Italian sausage, hot giardiniera, and peppadew peppers. The pizza was excellent; the generous amount of red sauce kept it incredibly flavorful without being dry. The mozzarella was perfectly chewy--not too wet--which really complemented the overall texture. I also loved the peppers, as they added a great spicy kick to the dish. Hands down best pizza I've ever had. The service is what made it. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. Originally we were told there was a 1.5 wait time. We put our name down just in case and walked around. 45 min later we went back and the hostess noticed me and set a table up for us without hesitation. They don't have a kids menu but I asked if they can somehow make my daughter a cheese pizza, she said absolutely and came back with a kids cheese pizza just for her. Now on to our old Chicago Detroit style pizza...the sauce nothing far from amazing. Not too acidic, not too sweet it was perfection. Toppings were Italian sausage with meatballs and ricotta. Great restaurant! Came on Memorial Day weekend and didn't have to wait in a long line. We ordered the Caesar salad and got the anchovies on the side. I ordered the meatball pasta which was very good the pasta noodles themselves were terrific, and then we ordered the spicy vodka pasta which was also great. The portions are very large so I say you could definitely share because we all ended up eating maybe about half of our meal and then taking the rest home. The plates are a bit pricey, but you are getting a large portion. The inside is very nice. It is a narrow space so it creates a more intimate restaurant atmosphere and the service was great, but if I was coming here again, I would definitely share a plate and be very satisfied. read more

The overall rating for this restaurant is a 4 but the food specifically is closer to a 3 or 3.5! The service was good so that was nice and we like the ambiance that was also a plus. It gave an old school Italian joint vibe like many places in that area, booths, tables bar and arches. We finally decided to try a deep dish pizza after years of saying no, unfortunately its not our thing & not even close to matching NY style pizza or Square pizza bummer. The one thing on the deep dish I enjoyed was the crust it wasn't too thick & had good crispiness/ flavor. Pasta bake was bland and absolutely tasted like something I make at home all the time. It needed less chunky cheese and more finesse. The two apps were good but not super flavorful or stand out. The only thing I really enjoyed was the artichoke dip and that was a bit runny. Despite having a reservation, my time at Capo's felt a little rushed. We were done and dusted in just over an hour. I ordered an Italian soda but I suspect it was just sparkling water with some syrup added to it. The lasagne was quite bright and acidic, with lots of tomato sauce. Great restaurant but limited in non-pork options! We visited Capo's for our friend's birthday dinner, having made a same-week reservation. The interior had a classic vibe with a metal tile ceiling, red leather booths, and a bit of a mafia theme. For drinks, we got a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, which was solid. We also ordered a Caesar Salad to share, which was phenomenal. Every piece of romaine lettuce was evenly coated in dressing and parmesan cheese. For pizza, I wasn't quite sure what to get. I wanted to branch out from the classic Margherita, but almost every pizza had pepperoni, sausage, or prosciutto as a topping. I tried to order the Dillinger (no bacon) in a cast iron pan, but was informed that the crust contains pork lard and only Detroit-style would be an option. The server also did not allow us to make any other modifications, which was fine. The Detroit Style Dillinger was a HUGE meal. I liked the way the flavors came together, especially the marinated chicken and the cream sauce, but Detroit style is just way too much crust for me. I couldn't eat more than one slice! My friends loved their Cracker Thin Little Italy and Cracker Thin Bootlegger, which looked way more manageable. At least we had plenty of leftovers for the following day! Six thumbs ups for this three person review!!! For Drinks we ordered the Spring Showers and Negroni. Absolutely delicious!! Appetizers: ordered the calamari and the mixed green salad with dried cherries and Gorgonzola. The Gorgonzola cheese was so darn creamer OMG!!! Yum!!!! The calamari was very delicious with no fishy taste and not rubbery. Pizza: ordered the Detroit deep dish. Good Lord, this was amazing!!! The crust was very airy not heavy and the cheese on the outer sides was baked for a nice crunch! The dollops of ricotta were so creamy as well... and I don't care for the texture of regular ricotta but this ricotta was so smooth and tasty it made a ricotta believer. Now for dessert: we tried the tiramisu, chocolate chip canoli and the butterscotch pudding. Man, again six thumbs up. You MUST give this restaurant a try especially if you want the Tony's pizza. This is a sister restaurant without the 2 hour wait. You will not be disappointed. The ambiance was very nice and relaxing. Nice big bar..no booths just tables. Lastly, we would LOVE to thank Grace and Ora for their hospitality, great service, attention, friendliness and courteous service. OUTSTANDING! The food was OUTSTANDING. The service was OUTSTANDING. The location was...you guessed it...OUTSTANDING! We went to the North Beach Festival today. The weather was beautiful. The crowd was happy and full of life and music. And we discovered Capo's. Amazing! We dropped in to rest for a moment and have a glass of wine and water and decide where we were going to explore in the neighborhood. The staff was so enthusiastic and welcoming, we chatted for quite a while as we were people watching and relaxing. After walking through the neighborhood, enjoying the music, we went back to Capo's for dinner. It was fabulous. We started with the Rosemary Focaccia and olives followed by the 10" cracker thin Old Chicago pizza. For dessert we shared a Budino. For wine we had glasses of Tony's Super Tuscan. Best. Deep Dish Pizza. Ever. I have had Capo's bookmarked for years and finally visited for the first time. Walking in Capo's is like being transported to the days of prohibition with Al Capone. An old school speakeasy that is mafia themed, with photos of old mob bosses and well appointed bar & dining areas. There's also seating available outside to enjoy the nice summer weather in North Beach. But how was the food? Old Chicago Deep Dish: the crust at Capo's is the best I've ever had in a deep dish. The meatballs, red sauce mixed with the ricotta was creamy, comforting, and hearty. The combination of textures and flavors made it the best deep dish pizza I've ever had. Very solid Italian food!! We came here once for pizza and the second time for pastas. Staff were great. They have a good happy hour too which I love! I got the vodka pasta and it was a huge portion. Like this one dish can feed multiple people or provide many meals for leftovers. I think one thing I would prefer is for the vodka pasta to be creamier but I do think it being more tomato based makes it lighter, so depends on what you like. Let's get a buzz and order way too much! We're big guys so they put us into a booth/table that was pretty comfy, though a little tight. Our biggest guy sat outside the booth so it worked out! It had a great flavor to it though its combination of sweet and savory flavors. The ricotta on top was a pleats touch. The Cesar salad and pesto rigatoni were lacking. When we walked in it felt like we were transformed back to old Chicago. The plush leather seats, dark atmosphere and mobsters pictures on the walls. The staff were awesome! Our server was "N" but can't remember her name. Spectacular She was helpful and so friendly. We decided on a couple glasses of wine (very tasty too) and the Caesar salad. We came to Capo's during our visit to San Francisco, and did not disappoint. We had a reservation for our large party, and were seated immediately. The decor gives a bar vibe (there is also a bar), there are decorations that are scattered and a whole old school phone booth in the back of the restaurant. The highlights are DEFINITELY the portion sizes and the incredible flavors of the pizzas! There are options of type of pizza - which we went with a deep dish. Capo's never disappoints. We stopped in right when they opened at 4:30 on Valentine's Day without reservations and were lucky to grab seats at the bar. By the time we left two and a half hours later, the place was packed. We started with a charcuterie platter and a great bottle of wine. The bar service was outstanding friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. One of the bartenders insisted their Caesar salad was the best in the city... he wasn't wrong. Absolutely fantastic. I love thin crust pizza, and this is my favorite pizza in the city. The crust is truly cracker thin, but it holds its shape really well. The sauce goes all the way up to the crust, and the balance of flavors on this pizza is perfect. We also tried the Detroit style Deville (not pictured), and it was spicy with more of a focaccia texture than regular deep dish. A hit amongst the rest of the table. As a foodie, I wanted something unique and I can't get in San Diego, so chose the Chicago Cracker Thin Crust, and got half The Bootlegger(vodka sauce, thick & thin pepperoni, Cup n Char italian sausage, ricotta, peppadew peppers, hot honey, basil) and half Little Italy(pepperoni, mushrooms, red onion, Chicago Italian sausage)...SPECTACULAR!!! The ultra thin crust had a nice "crunch" to each bite, adding tantalizing texture to the delicious ingredients mentioned above. Crunch! Crunch! Crunch! PRO TIP1: The crunch does slowly fade over time, so you'll will to gobble this up more quickly than usual if you want that crunch. Otherwise its more like luke warm New York pizza after about 15-20 minutes. But gawddamn...its great pizza! PRO TIP2: The Cracker Thin is only type they allow a half and half, which is a great way to try two food items. I've heard the commercials touting "WORLDS BEST PIZZA" for years but just recently tried a Tony Gemignani restaurant. Of course my initial reaction was "really? Worlds best?" That's a big claim considering we're not in Italy or New York or Chicago. So naturally I had a lot of doubts regarding the claim, but of course with so many pizza varieties and with flavors being subjective in nature you always take it with a grain of salt. So let's get to the review. We booked a reservation in advance on a Sat evening for a party of 7 and were promptly seated. The decoration was pretty standard and things overall looked pretty clean. Their menu is slightly limited in that they have mostly pizza's, a very small selection of pasta's and a few sandwich offerings along with the usual appetizers and salads. Prices are in line with the area. We tried a good variety of the menu ordering 5 different appetizers, several pizzas, several pasta's and one beef sandwich. First of all let me say the service was EXCELLENT. I was surprised because on a Saturday evening I don't usually expect to get a lot of attention from servers but we were checked on consistently. One member of my table ordered a diet Coke and it was flat and they promptly replaced it. They were quick to refill waters and asked us how everything was going. They rotated 2-3 service staff checking on us and I definitely felt like they were making sure our experience was going well. Food quality was very good. Would I say it's the best pizza I've ever had in my life? Probably not, but I had no complaints. The Pizza was cooked well, had plenty of toppings and tasted like a good solid pizza. The pastas and sandwich were all solid as well. One thing I will add is the portions are enormous, and I'm all about value as well as quality so comparatively you get a great amount of food. We took enough home to eat several meals as the portions sizes were great. So overall a very good experience at a Tony Gemignani restaurant. My favorites: the baked artichokes and a cracker thin Bootlegger. My husband's: honey calabrese sausage and a Detroit Motorhead. I save my single stars for only the most egregious of experiences, and since we were able to make a reservation, got served, and got edible food, this gets two stars. But OMG is it bad. Like, so bad. Like, what a waste of money and a night out in North Beach for serious foodies bad. Awful cocktails that are not creative. Awful atmosphere that feels and smells like and is as loud as a sports bar, and food NOT fit for foodies. Whatsoever. We had the --baked artichokes, which were a glorified artichoke dip you take to a low-brow party to put next to the Jello salad. --stuffed squash blossoms, which I got excited about because I love these foodie treasures, but they were in a heavy-batter fry like something you'd get on Coney Island or some tourist trap, heavy and not fresh-tasting. --vegetarian "cracker thin" pizza with pesto and other things, which was sort of the best of the three, but barely, and none of it was fresh--frozen or marinated mushrooms, etc. Like all the ingredients just came from Costco or worse. They throw in some cheap awful white bread. We were also oversold. We were realistic about our hunger level and asked whether we were overordering and told we weren't, but we did. We ended up giving away our leftover pizza outside, leaving completely stuffed beyond belief, but still hungry for actually good food. Foodies, skip it!! Tourists, you'll love it. read more

So i decided to give this place a try since it's own by Tony. Let me tell you the food is just as good here as it is at his pizzeria. We started off with their Rosemary focaccia bread with marinated olives. OMG!! So yummy. My husband and I were fighting over the olives. Then we also ordered a pasta and pizza. We got the spicy vodka penne pasta and the Sam Giancana. Both were very delicious. The sauce on the pasta was kinda thick which I'm not used to, but it did taste yummy. The pizza had the MOST crispy and buttery crust I've had. Im not much on tomatoes sauce on top of my pizza but, I did order a Detroit style. It was still good. Mindblowing !! Tried their motorhead deep dish pizza ( full size ) . It was excellent & so filling. We turned out too full after eating just 3 slices between the 2 of us. We got the cracker thin pizza which let us try both the bootlegger and the deville. The bootlegger was a more standard vodka sauce pizza. The flavors on this thing were so potent. It's flushed with explosive vodka tomato-y flavor that works well with the sweet creamy burrata cheese. I wasn't sure if I was going to like the Deville at first but I was surprisingly quite taken back by it. The hot honey has an addicting thick sweetness that permeates the entire pie. The combination of honey and spicy chili oil creates this dynamic flavor profile that I just kept finding myself going back for more. I had made an reservation a month in advance, considering we are coming from Dallas, Tx. We finally made it to capo's on our date of the reservation. Their deep dish pizza is to die for! We ordered the Old Chicago and it came with generous layers of meatball and cheese with every bite. I particularly loved the crust, which was thick, crispy, and still fluffy inside. I was debating whether to give it 4 stars, because we also ordered the garlic bread with truffle, mushrooms, and arugula which I wouldn't order again. The bread wasn't super toasty and it kind of felt like a waste of stomach space. However, the pizza was the best deep dish I've ever had! I will say that I've been to Chicago and have tried all of the popular spots like Lou Malnatis, Uno, Giordanos, etc. I can't wait to go back and also try their meatball sub. It pains me to write this but Capo's has really fallen off. We've been coming here since right after it opened and were big fans, consistently recommending it to out of town friends who were visiting. This place, after all, used to serve the Quattro Forni, one of the most delicious pizzas in SF. This past week was our first time back in a few years and everything we ate was...really not good. The kitchen was way off in both flavor and execution. The squash blossoms were greasy and overloaded with cheese, with little flavor. The Caesar salad dressing had no flavor either, and the "fresh" anchovies tasted off. The pasta was overcooked, mushy, and the sauce wasn't balanced. The pizza needed parmesan and salt just to be palatable. And dishes labeled "spicy" were overwhelmingly spicy, rather than the moderate heat we remembered from previous visits. Our server, while friendly, was visibly sick and coughing and hacking off to the side in between serving our food and drinks. The staff clearly needs some training and Tony should give this place a visit to get it back on track. Wishing y'all luck but there are way too many other excellent options in North Beach for us to give Capo's another try. read more

Wow! I called to make resos for my son's 7th birthday and from beginning to end they were great. When we arrived they knew and came by and gave the kids swag stickers. At the end when we left they gave us a tiramisu to go. They made it nice and special for my son and I really appreciated it. Food was obviously yummy and it was a great place to celebrate as a family. Thank you, Capo's! read more
