My boyfriend and I took a little mini-vacation to Edenton which is about 10 miles from Captain Bobs. Since we got to Edenton on a Sunday and all shops and restaurants are closed on Sundays, we traveled to a different town to find an open restaurant. We just headed down route 17 and found this little gem! SO HAPPY that we did because we absolutely loved it! Coming from northern Virginia, we are so used to the overly priced yet mediocre food. However, when we walked in and were greeted by two friendly young women, we didn't know what to except until we opened our menus and were stunned at the inexpensive dishes. Not only was the food so inexpensive, but there were a lot of items to choose from! We couldn't decide so in the meantime our server brought over our sodas, some water, and some complimentary hush puppies. We finally decided on getting a grilled cheese ($0.99) with a side of fries ($2.99) for me as I am a big kid at heart and the BBQ pork and fried chicken platter for my boyfriend. The platter included a big piece of fried chicken on top of a big portion of Carolina pulled pork BBQ, potato salad, onion rings, hush puppies, cornbread, and some other type of bread all for $12.99!! The food was so delicious!! We were so pleasantly surprised at not only the friendliness of the staff and the tasty food but also the inexpensive prices. In total we paid $29.60 for one soda, our two meals, two pieces of cake, and tip!!!!! What a deal!! We stopped here while on a family vacation / road trip. It's very conveniently located, right off a main road. We almost didn't stop, because the parking lot was packed with what I assume was the after-church crowd, but I'm glad we did. They seated us right away. The service was great even though they were busy. The prices are very reasonable, lunch buffet was delicious, and menu items came out quickly. The restrooms were clean. The negative reviews confuse me. It's a diner. The food was delicious, down-home fare. If you're looking for something fancy, move on. Stopped for some North Carolina BBQ, But ended up with very good seafood. Yes the sign said "Capt. Bob's BBQ & Seafood" but after stopping at other places that had both BBQ & Seafood to find only few fried seafood items only. Was very surprised to see a good selection of seafood of on the menu grilled, fried and boiled items with create your own platters. I ordered scallops and shrimp boiled,Yum full of great flavor. My wife had grilled tuna with no complaints. Only one thing I don't care for I ordered corn bread as one of my sides, it came out as a cornbread flat pancake to was deep fried and full of oil. Other than that, Service was fast and friendly. Quality of the food was good. For sure most definitely worth a stop at this place. We loved it. My husband and I went on a Friday night for the seafood buffet. They had a good selection that was refilled regularly, the servers were friendly and attentive and the food was delicious. I took off one star because I thought the steamed shrimp was a bit over seasoned (way too salty for my taste) and one batch of oysters tasted like the fryolator oil was maybe a bit old. Was working down in the area and a local that I was working with had a Bob's sweatshirt on so I had to ask about it.. He sent me down here and my oh my am I happy I took his advice.. I came in at lunch time and got the buffet and a drink and my bill was $11 so I will say it is also affordable but back to the review.. Food on the buffet -fried chicken -grilled chicken -catfish which was amazing -chicken pot pie again amazing -yams or as I call them sweet potatoes which were great -green beans -corn and beans -potato salad -coleslaw -pudding with vanilla wafers And much much more.. I like the buffet and like any buffet it is best when first opening and lots of people are going through the line. The chicken has always been the best. Fried fish is catfish and perch or spot. I went here very often as a child. Hush puppies are amazing and aren't better anywhere else(I lived in Texas and now California). So my wife and I decided to stop in and eat dinner at Captain Bobs Restaurant. The parking lot is always full, so we figured the food had to be good. We walk in and it's obvious the floor has not had a good cleaning since the restaurant opened. The whole decor looks like it came straight out of 1970. The Christmas decorations were still up on the fireplace. Christmas in July, okay then. So we decided to get the buffet. We walk into another room where the "buffet" was located and found the smallest buffet I have ever seen. My wife got the chicken and I got the catfish. My wife said the chicken was greasy, but not bad. The catfish was good and the rest of the meal was okay. Nothing to write home about. The bill with tip, was around $30.00. I seriously don't think we will be eating there again. The only thing I can figure, it's one of the only restaurants in the area besides fast food, if it wasn't for that I'm sure this place would have closed down long ago. read more

Went on our way home from a trip one evening and saw that it had a "buffet". Both me and my girlfriend got the buffet and tried everything on it (a total of about 6 choices of food). Neither one of us were impressed. The food was bland and only luke-warm. The bbq was dry and the hushpuppies were flat out cold. I would not recommend it. The service was ok. My suggestion would be to save your time and money and go to the McDonald's across the street. read more

Went here on our honeymoon, because since this was the closest we were getting to the coast, I wanted some seafood! Went in there to get some fresh-caught flounder, catfish and we went for the scallops. You're allowed to get them blackened, broiled or fried... We weren't exactly asked the option, so she just sent them out fried.. Which wasn't horrible. The flounder and the catfish were great and crispy.. just delicious. But the scallops were really plain and we both didn't like them. My husband like their fried okra and we both loved the hush puppies. The cornbread fries or whatever are extremely dry, so just stick with the hush puppies if you come here! read more

I was half to blame on this one. Called in my order at 8:15, they closed at 8:30. You all know living in the county, you already accept your dinner will be like worm at best when you get home. Well our dinners were still warm, but over cooked. Again I accept my part, by ordering last minute. We all got fried fish dinners. All of them were over cooked. I couldn't call them until today. When I called, I was met with curtesy, and an attitude of what can I do to fix it. They gave me a voucher for my meals with the total price paid. Bravo! The food is always good there. We celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary at Monteros in Eliz Cty and our son-in-law's birthday on Aug 21st. Only 4 tables were occupied when we came in so therefore expected at least fair service. The waitress seemed very put out that we didn't just get the buffet and made it clear she was not pleased that we only wanted water. I did get up to look at the buffet but it was pretty unappetizing. I suppose if getting all you can cram is why you came in, you'll be happy. We ordered off of the menu instead. One of us got the chopped bbq sandwich and the other got the sliced bbq sandwich. The chopped was pretty run of the mill Carolina bbq while the sliced was like two dried out pork chop pieces. I would have used the sauce to moisten it a bit but the two squeeze bottles on the table were pretty disgusting. We had a side of onion rings too and they were above average and not frozen. The scallops were way over cooked and rubbery. The shrimp had no flavor. The hush puppies tasted like flower with no flavoring. The crabcake had very little crab and was flat like a pancake and with no flavor. The sweet potato cakes were definitely frozen from a bag and we're tasteless. Even the fried corn had very little flavor. I don't know if they have a lot of old people eating here so they need low flavor but I was very disappointed.
