$5 fried fish deal. Delicious especially with the tarter sauce
    Leigh D.

Introduction to the Isolated Town of Abingdon, VA: Abingdon, VA: a fairly isolated town in the far southwestern part of VA. It's at least conveniently located off the interstate. I looked at the cities in my Yelp reviews, and they are almost all in Metro areas or within 50 miles. There are a few exceptions. This is the 2nd furthest from a city of 100,000 or more population and only one of two more than 100 miles from a city of this size. Asheville, NC is the closest at 111 miles. My next review might be the most isolated place on an Alaska cruise I was on. Ketchikan is 742 to Victoria, BC; Juneau is 848 to Anchorage, but the big winner of isolated is Sitka, which airport/boat access only and a greater distance to Anchorage than Juneau. So Sitka, AK might be next review for the soup establishment I had in 2016. About the Restaurant: I first had Captain D's when I lived in Birmingham, AL in April 2010, and I knew them to be better than Long John Silvers for fried fish. I first tried sweet tea at that same Captain D's in April 2010. I remember they tended to be a little slow because they were carefully preparing the fish. But let's set the record straight, it's still fast food, not some fancy seafood restaurant. However, they are still pretty tasty. I would give the ones I had in Alabama and Fredericksburg, VA (the closest to where I live now about 70 miles away) about 4 stars or maybe even 3. However, this location gets a 5 because of the outstanding customer service. My parents were moving across the US, and I was helping drive across the country in late January/early February. We were in Abingdon, VA at lunchtime on Tuesday, February 2. Bare in mind, we were still in the height of the pandemic, so as with a lot of places, it was drive-thru only or at the very least no dine-in. We also had a dog my parents have, so often times it was better to eat at the hotel for dinner and for lunch in the car anyway. We wanted to go in because my parents hadn't been and I hadn't in years, so didn't know what we want, but they were being extra safe with drive-thru only. We were discussing going to some local hot dog place, but my mom wasn't sure about that place as they had unusual hot dogs/burgers on the menu looking on my phone. We decided on Captain D's very close to I-81. One issue we weren't aware of was that it was at the top of hill, and it was icy. My dad was understandably very concerned about getting back down in the U-Haul on the ice. When we got to drive-thru, we ended up getting the $5 special, which comes with 2 fried fish flanks, French fries, & 2 hush puppies. I think it even came with a drink too, and of course, I got the delicious sweet tea. We paid at the window, and she nicely said to go into a certain parking spot, and they would bring the food out. Within reasonable time, she brought our food out, which was good because I was starving. She went into the bitterly cold 20's F to bring the food to the customers, which she was a trooper for that alone! But she saw our dog and brought out treats for him! That was outstanding customer service plus she was friendly to us. We explained we were moving across the country and in the U-Haul, and she told us how we could exit a different way, which was less hilly and icy. We ate our food, which was even better than I remembered it. The fish flanks were pretty big, but some of it was the breading. Still I really enjoyed the food. I mentioned to my parents that I wanted a refill on my sweet tea, and they said I don't think they'll give a refill in the drive thru. Since I was driving the car, I tried it. I said we just ordered and could I get a refill to which she gladly said we could. Overall, we left with a positive taste in our mouth from not only the food/sweet tea, but also the outstanding customer service. Highly recommend!

Not sure if there's a lot available solely for this place. There's a dining room and a bar area. There's also a cute little lounge area next to the bar that would be a great space to catch up with friends or family and to be able to enjoy a cocktail while relaxing. This place is a vibe. Super cool decor and atmosphere. Very welcoming and friendly staff. We sat at the bar. We were greeted immediately and by a super friendly bartender named Zane. We ordered a rosemary cosmo, bacon washed old fashion, Mexican beer on tap (can't remember the name - see pic for name on the actual skull tap), and a drink that wasn't on the menu, but they have had before (we were with a local who knows this place well). All drinks were lovely. The rosemary cosmo wasn't sweet and had just the perfect hint of rosemary. The bacon washed old fashion is highly recommended. We didn't eat here, but they do have some tasty looking dishes. Guest at the bar ordered apps and then a steak that wasn't absolutely massive! Overall a great place to perch and have a terrific time. Very attentive and friendly staff. They have an extensive wine selection, as well as a well stocked bar.

I'm really glad that I made an effort to make this happen because it was an excellent experience. We walked into a sign that said half price wine bottles. Ordered a bottle of rosé that ended up being one of the best ones I've ever had. We tried the boa buns on appetizers and WOAH. So good!! I had a sushi special for the evening that was delicious and my sister had the Mongolian beef, which was also very good and a huge serving. Dessert to top it off was a lemon sorbet. Waitress was excellent, bartender was sweet and brought us our drinks and the inside ambience, including the music was spot on. Just all in all great experience and I would recommend to anyone.

The Girl & The Raven has such a cool story behind it, and learning about the meaning of the raven in Native American folklore made the experience feel even more special. Then the food arrived... and suddenly conversation stopped because everyone was too busy saying, "You have to try this!" We ordered the breakfast bowl with sweet potatoes, arugula, and the famous hippy sauce, a gooey cinnamon bun, and the homemade daily biscuit sandwiches. Every single bite was phenomenal. The hippy sauce deserves its own fan club, the biscuit was flaky perfection, and the cinnamon bun disappeared so fast it should probably qualify as magic. Every dish was cooked to absolute perfection. You can tell it's crafted by Michelin trained chefs who know exactly what they're doing. Sarah Grace took amazing care of us. She was friendly, attentive, and somehow managed to make us feel like regulars even though we were just passing through. The restaurant itself is adorable, and the artwork covering the walls is stunning. We seriously considered playing a game of "How much luggage can we leave behind to make room for a painting?" If we hadn't packed the car for vacation, one of those paintings would have been riding shotgun all the way home. Come hungry, stay curious about the story, and don't be surprised if you leave wishing your vehicle had just a little more cargo space.
