    Oyster Ice Cream

This was a loud place with good-sized bar and a menu that changes daily it seemed. They had lots of unique choices on the menu. The service was okay while the food came out in a timely manner. I liked that some of the fish items listed the fishing vessel on the menu. Three appetizers were ordered which consisted of a beet pickled deviled egg ($4 each), chilled oysters (Half Dozen $18), and the local fluke crudo ($17). The egg had a crispy clam strip and espelette pepper. This was solid. I thought the clam strip was a little too overpowerful given the size of that and the egg. The pickled beet egg was interesting, and I liked how the filling was also under the egg, so the egg did not move. The Riverhawk oysters were fresh and tasty. The mignonette was simple and paired well. The crudo had an herb mayo, pickled ramps, kelp crisp, and pickled sugar kelp. This was alright. It seemed like fennel or a similar type of herb was used in one of the pickling items, which took over a little bit. The kelp crisp was nice and paired well with the fluke. For an entrée, I had the local scup a la plancha ($37). It came with Marshall Cove mussels, fondant potato, English peas, and a saffron emulsion. This was a nice sized portion. I thought the saffron emulsion was key and went together with everything else on the plate. The mussels were fresh again, and the potatoes were cooked perfectly. It was a well-done dish, but the use of scup made it feel more modest, but maybe that was the point, so what do I know? I also tried the scallop dish that came with green crab crispy rice, chili crispy, and a garlic aioli. The rice was very crispy, and it reminded me of a traditional hibachi rice, but elevated. The scallops had a perfect cook to them too. For dessert, the oyster ice cream ($10) was tried. It had to be tasted when it was on the menu. It had a slight briny flavor, but nothing too overpowerful. The ice cream itself was very creamy with a nice texture. I believe Greek yogurt was used, which probably helped with the oyster flavor that was incorporated. Will I go back? Sure.

I rarely leave 5 star reviews. This place really earns it. The staff is amazing. The restaurant is beautiful. The food was absolutely amazing. Probably the best restaurant in Mystic. If there is one place to go it's here. Do it!

Amazing deviled egg that I could eat a dozen of!

So chic, so delicious, such an amazing server who understood our hangover and hangry needs! So glad I made a reservation - the decor was superb and the food hit the spot perfectly. I'm so glad I tried the deviled egg - that crispy clam strip was such a nice touch and being Ukrainian, the beet pickling is in my DNA! Excellent brunch choice for our Mystic getaway!

My friends and I went to the Shipwright's Daughter to close up our weekend away. We stayed at The Whaler's Inn, so we were given vouchers to dine here. The place is nice inside, with pleasant nautical decor and a very friendly staff. Our waitress was very nice and made us feel quite welcome. We came from brunch and the menu is very atypical. I decided to be adventurous and tried the Shakshuka. Now I've never had it before so I had no idea what to expect. I wasn't a big fan, sadly. It was a very sour (think lots of lime juice) soup with pita slices drenched in the soup and two (albeit perfect) poached eggs. I would not order it again. It needed way more spices and salt as well. My friend got the eggs Benedict and loved them. My other friend got the sandwich and didn't care for the sauce or sausage inside. Both friends raved over the hash browns. We all split the maple brandy cinnamon bun - it was well done and not too sticky. All in all I would try this place again, but for breakfast (not brunch) and/or dinner as I did hear great reviews.. and maybe stick to familiar foods.

We went here today for the first time as we are newbies to Mystic. It was my husbands birthday and I brought birthday paper place mats (that I had made from Etsy) for us with his photo and all fun facts about 1981 (the year he was born). It was interesting because although the staff was friendly enough not one acknowledged his birthday. The food was good. We got the biscuit, six oysters, he got the Benedict and I did avocado toast. We also did a side of hash brown- all the food was tasty and hot. The service was so quick that we hadn't gotten done with our oysters when the meals came out. Overall it was a good experience and my husband enjoyed his birthday brunch.

Jade was our server. She was very charismatic and made excellent recommendations. The food was tasty and the vibes were good. Busy but not noisy and over crowded. We will be back.

My first experience here and I can't recommend it enough. We went on a Monday at 5pm (before peak tourist season). We made a reservation and ended up doing happy hour, totally recommend. The restaurant was clean, staff were extremely friendly, and the vibe was quiet and relaxing. I'm sure it might be louder on the weekends but for a Monday night it was lovely. Since it was happy hour we sampled a little bit of everything from the Snacks. Smoked clam dip was delicious. The Sea-Scargot was amazing, I could have just eaten bread and that garlic herb butter. The mussels tasted fresh and delicious. The beet pickled eggs were good and just fun to eat! The crispy fried oysters were a table favorite, those were ordered twice and it was hard not to order them for a 3rd round. Our server was so helpful and recommended some great dishes. We did the steak tartare (first time trying that) and WOW! Truly delicious. We split the strip steak and another WOW! Delicious! Dessert was a cheesecake and by far the best espresso martini I've ever had. Not only was the food delicious but the way it was presented really made the experience more fun. I definitely recommend going for happy hour to give it a try.

Review is for Breakfast only. We were going to be visiting the area for a few days and we heard about this place, so we decided to come by for breakfast. Nice looking restaurant, it's located inside the Whalers Inn. They do have a small parking lot out back or you can park on the street around the perimeter. Friendly greetings upon arrival, seated quickly at a window table. Breakfast menu isn't too big but we did start off with a couple of Golden Lattes as we looked over the menu. Latte was pretty good, cinnamon was pretty pronounced and main flavor for me. Coffee type drinks is what they have listed only on the menu. As for breakfast, we got the: Traditional Benedict: nothing really blew us away on this. Biscuit was quite crumbly vs flaky, as soon as you cut into it, it was just crumble away where you will need to scoop it up. Just an ok dish. Captains Breakfast: pretty standard type of breakfast with 2 eggs, sausage patty, toast and some potatoes. Not sure what was in the sausage but its not just a regular pork sausage, I think there was a game meat mixed in too and pretty solid/lean where you need to cut it with a knife, saw some I think rice or barley bits inside. Potatoes, I wouldn't been able to tell if they were cooked in chicken fat or not. Wasn't too busy so the staff was friendly, attentive and checked on you if you need anything. Prices are on the high side for breakfast. Overall, we checked this place out for breakfast looks like most reviews are for brunch or dinner here. Good location is you are visiting downtown Mystic.

I know the last time I reviewed them was only 8 months ago, but there's a reason they keep winning Crazies awards, and that's because this is literally one of the best restaurants on the east coast. Actually, arguably the country. The service is always stupendous, and if you tip them less than 20% then that's absurd, in my humble opinion. The ambiance is always perfect around brunch time, and I swear I will make it here for dinner at some point. For this brunch session, my friend's boyfriend joined us for girls day out, it was his first time coming, and he was super impressed and now understands our obsession. We all kicked off with some iced and hot coffees this time, and I of course had a Bene. Every time I say I'm going to try something else, but that sweet sweet biscuit draws me in every time. The rhubarb mimosa they have right now for summer is fantastic, and I also recommend splitting the clam dip and fried oysters as apps. Full disclosure, as a girl from the Midwest, I typically do not like clams or oysters, they're not my go to seafood items of choice. Here though, I cannot get enough of them. So trust me when I say - get them. For dessert we all split some of the rhubarb pavlova and it was WONDERFUL. The melding and blending of flavors was exquisite and I'm in love. Thank you again, Shipwright's. We will be back again soon for more food and yapping.

    Duck mousse on bread

Fine dining and a solid 4. However, as a 2026 James Beard semi-finalist for Outstanding Chef, I was hoping for more. Every dish was executed well, but nothing blew me away. For starters, we shared duck mousse on toast, some raw oysters, sourdough bread, and winter salad. The duck mousse was incredibly smooth and flavorful. The oysters, bread, and salad were standard fare for a fine dining experience. The sourdough texture was light and airy like a good white bread, but it was lacking the chewy crumb and crispy crust that one expects in a rustic sourdough bread. The raw oysters were okay, but I've had better. For main courses, our table had the duck breast (weekends only), steak, flounder grilled on a plancha, and squid. The same comment applies about well executed for fine dining. I ordered the duck. The rohan duck is a special breed from D'Artagnan Foods. The duck is dry aged 14 days, roasted, topped with pickled blackberries and szechuan chili crisp, and served with sprouted lentil "fried rice." My main impression of the duck is that it tasted like a duck steak ("meaty"). The skin was crisp, but lacked in flavor. The chili crisp also lacked any flavor and heat. The only thing notable about the sprouted lentil fried rice was the slight pop that the lentils make in your mouth when eating them. Everyone else agreed about their main entrees being very good, but not quite great. For dessert we had basque cheesecake and pavlova. The cheesecake was served with a chocolate mousse and tasted like chocolate on chocolate. Overall, every dish had many components and each component was executed at a high level. I have a lot of respect for the effort that it takes to perfect that and produce that consistently. Reserving a table for 5 was a little challenging, but we got the only one available on the Saturday that we wanted. Free parking on the street was pretty straight forward. The atmosphere was very nice and not overly loud. The service was very good.

"Spaghetti Nero" (slipper limpets, castelvetrano olives, preserved lemon, mint, green crab sauce)

The Shipwright's Daughter is a seafood-focused New American restaurant that opened in Mystic, Connecticut in June 2020. It was founded by chef David Standridge. Educated at the Lenotre Culinary School in Texas, Standridge worked at a variety of restaurants in both Houston and New York City. In 2019, while working at L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon in NYC, his team clinched two Michelin stars. In 2019, Standridge relocated to Mystic with his family. Standridge decided to open a new tide-to-table restaurant on the ground floor of the historic Whaler's Inn. The menu is changed regularly to present highlights of the Connecticut coast. In 2024, Chef Standridge was awarded the prestigious James Beard Award. My family and I recently had dinner at the Shipwright's Daughter while we were in Mystic for the day. We had heard nothing but great things since it opened; getting a reservation can sometimes be tricky. We had a lovely server named Alex who gave us plenty of great recommendations throughout the evening. For drinks, I enjoyed a "Jekyll & Hyde" (The San-In Japanese whisky, red shish, shish bitters, cherry) while my wife enjoyed a glass of "Rosé". For starters, my wife and I shared a plate of "1/2 Dozen Oysters" (chilled: Fishers Island, NY) as well as the "Roasted Squash" (herbed yogurt, pickled delicata squash, harissa, crunchy quinoa). The complimentary sourdough bread plate with a scoop of miso garlic butter was also a nice touch. For entrees, I had the "Spaghetti Nero" (slipper limpets, castelvetrano olives, preserved lemon, mint, green crab sauce) while my wife had the "Bucatini" (seacoast mushrooms, sherry, Mystic Cheese finback, mushroom cream, fine herbs). From the Kids Menu, our older son had the "Roasted Chicken" (w/ baby potatoes) and our younger son had the "Bucatini" (w/ butter & parmesan). We all ended our perfect meal by sharing the "Warm Apple Cider Donut" (maple gelato, apple gummies, brown butter dust). Every single plate that was brought to our table was a symphony of delightful flavors. It was truly an exceptional dining experience and we all highly recommend Shipwright's Daughter!

    Fried whiting. Large and delicious

We were not quite as enchanted as we were at the last visit. They are stressing local food sourcing. Some of the dishes have whelk and limpets which are pretty much at the bottom of the seafood ranks. The chef is a genius at making them edible and almost delicious but I think they may be stretching too far when there is plenty of higher grade options like mussels, shrimp, scallops etc. seems like they are trying to prove a point...that a lot of overlooked biology can be made edible. Perhaps the next menu will feature earthworms. As always, the service was spot on and the atmosphere was lively and invigorating. The fried Whiting was the most favored dish among us but everything was prepared well and had interesting flavor profiles.

Appetizers. Sea Scargot and Fluke Crudo

Probably the best restaurant experience I've ever had. I have an associates in culinary and this is exactly how they teach it. Food was incredible, rotating daily menu that utilizes seasonal ingredients with fresh seafood caught daily. Alex was our waiter and was so genuine and knowledgeable about EVERYTHING. The energy is incredible. We sat by the window and the scenery is so romantic and cute. I was so comfortable the entire time. I believe this is one of the best sit down restaurants in CT.

Went here with my family this year on the Tuesday after Mother's Day and I had hyped the place up based on my wonderful experience last year. I sure wish they hadn't because the lump crab dip was delicious but the replacement was spinach and artichoke dip. The artichokes were not blended they were chunks and it was not in a creamy sauce but dry with shredded Parmesan cheese over the top. It was awful. I didn't even eat it. I also ordered the crab cake which wasn't good. Last time I had the crab cake, it was made with chuncks of crabmeat. This time it was shredded crabmeat and a lot of breadcrumbs. My son's girlfriend and my husband both ordered mussels and they each said they were okay. My husband also ordered what we call a crab imperial dish containing different kinds of shellfish, bread crumbs, cream sauce and cheese. On a visit to Mystic, I could not wait to find a restaurant that served more seafood than I could easily settle on. Sitting in the Mystic Marriott lobby, yelp pointed us to the Captain Daniel Packer Inne. What a find. Although the building was restored in 1979, it's origin dates to 1756. Everything seems to have been preserved -including the aura. As you would expect with a building older than the signing of the Declaration of Independence, it is small in size but large in hospitality. Without reservations, we did not stand much of a chance in the upstairs dinning area, but a flight of stairs down to the pub in the cellar... and we were seated in 20 minutes. For appetizers, we had the phyllo dough lobster lollipops and an order of artichoke hearts that were resting in a light lobster sauce (the artichoke that is) that invited us to soak up what was left with the delicious homemade bread we were served. For our main course we had the halibut steak that was sitting on top of freshly mashed potatoes with a smattering of fresh corn kernels. The customer service attendants were mindful of their tables and visited at opportune times. -Not when you start to take a bite and never did we wonder where they might have gone off to. Parking is always tricky, but we got a good spot in the lot and were very happy. The wait for the table was maybe 10 minutes which was not too bad. The waitress was very good and she took care of our water, drinks, and bread right away. The place was busy but we really were pleased with the service! I ordered the fish and chips. Most of the table ordered a steak, veggie, and mashed potatoes. Truffle fries was the appetizer that landed on my end of the table. They were not my favorite. Those who had the steak seemed happy with the meal. Both of us who had the fish and chips were not happy with the meal. We had fish and chips at Steak Loft the night before- and they did not compare. They were perfect. The order I had at Daniel Packard were heavy and filling but I was missing the light tempura batter, the crunch and soft fresh fish, and the great tartar sauce that is the standard for fish and chips! I really value a business that Chooses not to sacrifice the quality of their products for a cheaper price. Highly recommend this restaurant when visiting Mystic!
