The restaurant was quaint and service was good. I ordered the large crab cakes with 2 sides. I also order clam chowder. I thought the sides tasted good but the crab cakes were Not good. They didn't even look like crabcakes to me. They looked more like a crab croquette. I think the crabcakes that you buy at Costco in the freezer section is better lol. The clam chowder was good. Yeah it's alright in a pinch, I guess. No hate, just not planning on returning. Not to be mean, but this was a bland experience. Except for the broiled catfish. That wasn't bland, but it was extremely heavy on the pepper. FYI, lemon juice helps that a lot. Hope you like lemon juice. The service was nice and it was roomy enough. One of my coworkers recommended this restaurant a while back and we had a taste for seafood so we decided to go since we were in the area. The restaurant is spacious with tables and booths, and has a nautical and aquatic theme throughout the business. We arrived during lunch hours and there was a good amount of people dining in but we didn't have to wait for a table. Our server, TJ was helpful and personable. He took our drink orders and brought over a basket of complimentary hush puppies and butter. They were warm and tasted good. The restaurant has daily specials. I decided to order the grilled mahi mahi fish special. The meal comes with two sides. I wanted a salad but it isn't included in the sides so there was $3.50 up charge to add it to my meal. I got the house salad with French dressing, cucumbers, tomatoes, cheese, croutons, and greens. I didn't get the onions on my salad. The salad was really good and a nice size for a side salad. I chose to have my mahi mahi blackened and chose fries as my second side. The fish was good but the fries were over cooked. Once brought to TJ's attention he brought out more quickly. I just ate at Captain Stanley's for the first time, but I hope it won't be the last. The decor isn't fancy; about what you'd expect from a seafood joint at the shore. This is excellent Calabash, North Carolina style fried seafood without having to drive to the coast. I like the Captain's Choice Platter Dinner which includes a cup of chowder, followed by the main course; a fried seafood platter consisting of fresh caught flounder, shrimp, scallops, clamstrips and deviled crab. Each platter additionally receives 2 vegetable side orders which should include the cold slaw and potato french fries. The wait after the servers takes your order is the fastest in town. Your platter comes out piping hot and it is some of the best you have eaten. This is Southern Calabash style that pairs well with their fresh made sweet tea. Get there early to avoid lines for lunch and dinner. read more

The Shrimp: The shrimp were unseasoned and had not been deveined, tasted like your average calabash places fried shrimp The Crab Cakes : AMAZING, the first crab cake I've ever had that wasn't unbearably dry. The Clam Strips: Wonderful, once again one of the only times I have ever had clam that was not chewy and rubbery. The fried oysters: Pretty average, probably would go with something else that tastes better next time since there were a lot of better options. The Alaskan Whiting: EXCELLENT. Well seasoned perfectly cooked. Some lemon and hot sauce would have made this perfect. The scallops: I am not a scallop person but my husband is. Overall they were great to him, they were not rubbery and didn't taste too much like ocean. The potato salad: Has a very strong mustard taste, so if you like a potato salad with a kick of mustard this is for you. The green beans: pretty standard canned beans, need some salt and pepper, not bad. The service was excellent. Our waitress was nice and on top of things. The vibe: while the service was excellent and the food was good, some of the other customers were unsavory. If you can get past that I would definitely recommend! read more

We were part of a 25 person group that had lunch here in a private area. As people we straggling in the waitstaff took orders and then when everyone had arrived, they had the kitchen start cooking orders. Obviously not their first rodeo. Well done. The fried seafood was good as was the sweet tea and slaw. The desserts also looked delicious. Wait staff was excellent. Broiled shrimp had no taste. Almost like it was from a bag of frozen shrimp from the grocery store. They put seasoning on the top but still had no taste. Wife had the salmon. I've been coming to Captain Stanley's for the past few years. It's a little hidden behind other buildings. They've been there for a very long time and I only found out about them through a friend. If it wasn't for their parking, I would give them 5 stars. Parking is always crucial, no matter what day of the week. It's almost always overflowing and sometimes, you have to park out on the streets and walk a bit. I always get a take out for lunch. They have separate entrance for take out orders, which is very convenient as they are always packed inside and the lines can get long. I call ahead so usually, I am in and out within 5 min. I normally get their lunch platter. You pick 2 seafood items, 2 vegetable sides, and it comes with hush puppies. I've tried their flounder, trout, and shrimp- they are all delicious! Very generous portions, too! For vegetables, green beans, slaw, baked potato, and french fries are safe bets. Each platter comes with 2 sauces, either cocktail sauce or tartar sauce. Aside from their lunch platter, shrimp burger is one of my favorites. Everyone is always welcoming and friendly. Considering the quality and the quantity, it's very affordable. If you are craving seafood, I'd definitely recommend Captain Stanley's! read more

I've had bad experiences here before which resulted in long delays between visits. Friends wanted to go there for lunch so I agreed. There was a small wait even for lunch on a Friday. The food was fresh and hot and brought out in a reasonable amount of time. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. Everyone in our group was pleased with the meal as we enjoy seafood anyway. I was here once with my family for dine in and it was a great portion of food for the price. I called in an order and could not be more dissatisfied. I paid over 23 dollars for a large portion of shrimp and scallops ( I was told the "large" would be double portions of each), with a side of fries, and potato salad. I was also told that hush puppies came with. I also ordered some garlic butter on the side. I received about 15 tiny scallops and 15 tiny shrimp, no sides except for the puppies, and no butter. I really have to hand it to this place, even thought the food was well above average (not a guaranteed 5 star for me) , and the atmosphere was... Well lets just say interesting, the overall experience for my wife and I was so memorable, I would highly recommend this place to anyone! I am always looking for good seafood and Mexican in the Raleigh area, so my wife and I decided to come here on a whim one weekday evening. Based on the look of the place and the atmosphere, she was a little shy in trying the seafood, so she went with a grilled chicken salad... Very good choice as it turned out. If you see the attached photo, I went with the large "shrimp", which meant deep fried, fries and "Brunswick Soup", which as it turns out means a hearty beef and veggie soup. The breading on the shrimp was so light, yet crunchy! The fries (which I am usually not a fan of steak fries), were also VERY good, and my wife ate most of the soup. But the real kicker, the reason this place is a 5, was the service and people. We didn't talk to anyone eating, but everyone from the women at check-out, to the busboy, to our waitress, ALL came over and asked if we were OK, how the food was, and even took the time to say hello to our little 3 month old baby. Now granted our baby was having a very cute night (not a yell and scream / drool night), so that helped, but still it felt like we were sitting in our own family home with friends... Really neat when that happens. Price was a bit higher than average for an LJS type meal, but for my money it was totally worth it! I hate seafood but I love this place! The hushpuppies dipped in butter are magic in your mouth. I get the chicken tenders and they are hand-breaded, large pieces of chicken breast. No frozen, microwaved factory produced tenders here! The coleslaw is good, the fries are good, the sweet tea is amazing and service is FAST and always pleasant! My friends love the seafood. If it's a quick and delicious meal you want, this is the place. And, the price is right! As an aside to Sharon H who lamented the lack of Afro-Americans (save two who appeared to be only partial descent -I'm sure THEY wouldn't find you offensive at all), what a disgusting attitude! I have had black servers and I have had black employees serve me in the takeout area and I have seen black kitchen employees duck out the back door for a break. I have seen many black customers. Calabash style seafood in Raleigh. One of the very few good ones that I can think of around here.. Captain Stanley's has been around forever, but I hadn't made it out in years probably. You know it's some good seafood when it is always packed and the average age is around 65. Ha! I ordered the "small" fried scallops and oysters combo this time and they did not disappoint! Also, throw in the 2 sides (I did fries & Brunswick stew, yum!!) and hush puppies, and you have a ton of food! When we showed up, the line was out the door, but seems to move pretty fast.
