Excellent for a chain, but not quite 5-stars. The service is hit and miss. This was my third visit (her first). I've had great service, rough service, and this visit was an odd combination of a friendly yet not attentive server and a very attentive other staff (food runner maybe?) who tried to be on top of things while our server wasn't. The scallops were a hit, as was the crab dip. The shrimp diablo was "ok" - cooked properly , but something sold as Diablo should have some kick to it, and this definitely didn't. It's still going to be my regular place for pre-show dinner at Goodnights Comedy Club. I finally took my husband to Cape Fear after raving about the one closer to home. We arrived on a Saturday night before our comedy show and there was no wait time. We were greeted warmly by the hostess and our waitress. Wait time for everything was perfect! We ordered the hushpuppies, side of risotto, a bowl of the Cape Fear chowder, and the shrimp diablo with two diet cokes. I was craving seafood, so my husband and I went here on a Friday night. We went on the later side and didn't need a reservation to be seated right away. I got the watermelon margarita, which was quite tasty. We then got served some bread with butter which was a nice surprise! It's rare to get free bread at restaurants these days. For our dessert we got the Crème Brûlée. This got an A-. Overall 4 1/2 stars. Unfortunately, I can't grant that extra 1/2 star so I'll leave it at 4. LOVE this place so much! My hibiscus margarita was super tasty! Can't beat free bread no matter where you're at. My broiled seafood platter was amazing, as always. I have tried nearly all the seafood on their menu and have never ever had a bad meal. Their creamy risotto is to die for! Had a great lunch at the Cape Fear in the Village District today. It was very chilly, so we had excellent cups of clam chowder to start. I love peel n eat shrimp, and am normally not a fan of the "easy peel" shrimp as they tend to over cook. We requested slightly undercooked shrimp and our server, Alexandria, was more than happy to accomodate. Dinner around 6p on a rainy Saturday and the restaurant was crowded. There were 8 of us so we would have a long wait for a table. So there was space for all of us at the bar...so bar it was! The two wait staff were very friendly and started on our beverages quickly. Then we were ready to order after about 15 minutes. Actually sitting there was fun and pretty comfortable. I had the shrimp and grits. It had a good seasoned flavor and reasonable amount of medium size shrimp but not enough grits for me. It was probably about one fourth cup of grits and all these shrimp and sauce. I'm used to the grits at least covering the bottom of the bowl.of course I ate all the grits and had leftover shrimp. The Sunday $6 bloody Marys (in our case, we had a bloody Maria which was made with tequila) were spicy like we like it and the smoked old fashioned was as super tasty. -For our appetizers, we shared the crab scampi risotto cakes which were lightly breaded on the outside but creamy in the inside and was topped with lump crab, boursin cheese, lemon, and garlic. We also split a bowl of their rich, hearty clam chowder. - my boyfriend had the saltimbocca for his entree which was white fish wrapped in prosciutto & served over a bed of sauteed spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms & goat cheese and covered with demi glace & lemon beurre blanc. Easy parking for our 11 AM reservation. Nice outdoor patio seating for a nice fall morning. Brunch offerings are new here. There is a limited menu with only a few items. There are not any breakfast meat sides. There are three or four brunch entree options. I ordered the buffalo shrimp appetizer, bread pudding - french toast, and fruit. I also ordered a French 75. The 75 had a Lil too much lemon juice, but besides that, everything else was delicious. The waiter seemed to have an issue listening to simple requests like leaving the menu for taking out orders for the person I dined with during this visit. The waiter failed to clean up after spilling my drink upon arrival at my table. The bartender filled it to the rim. The waiter was apologetic and brought napkins when I asked. Besides that, I don't have any complaints. The server was pleasant and seemed nice, but a bit scripted. Did not seem to be genuinely engaged in serving but following scripts. 4 stars for the server's effort and the delicious food. Will I come again? Yes, lunch or dinner. I would like to see Cape Fear expand its brunch menu before returning for brunch.
