I feel compelled to write a review for Chang and his Car Connex. They are the most competent, honest and hard working mechanics I ever know. They always correctly diagnose the problem, explain the problem to me patiently and give me honest suggestions for the best of my cars. Once I had one of my car inspected at Chang's shop. They worked 3 hours to diagnose the problem. Took photos and videos of the flawed parts. After I decided to leave the car as it is, they wouldn't charge me a penny. I don't think any of the reviewers below actually shopped around. I went to three nearby shops. Chang at Car Connex was by far the most expensive, the least thorough and not rude BUT not friendly either. Chang did not bother to put car on a lift to inspect. He stated I needed new front/rear brakes and rear rotors. His quote was $500 and I'd have to wait around his shop all day until the parts came in at 3 PM and then begin the work. So, I went to Brakes Plus who came in at $400 but actually took the time to look at the car but was still too expensive and gave me the typical national brake chain speech/guilt sale. Finally, I went to Smyna Tire! Thank you, Lord!! $200 quote from guys that know what they're talking about. They were very nice, polite, helpful shop that's been in business for nearly 40 years. They put my car on the lift, told me my front brakes were just fine, needed new rear brakes AND THEY COULD REFINISH THE ROTORS WITHOUT REPLACING THEM AND WITHIN THE LEGAL LIMITS FOR JUST $200. CHANG WAS TOO LAZY AND TOO GREEDY TO REFINISH MY ROTORS. INSTEAD, HE KNEW IT'D BE EASIER AND MORE PROFITABLE TO SELL ME NEW ONES. My car brakes beautifully now with no squealing or issues for less than half of Chang's quote and was out less than two hours later! Thank you, Smyrna Tire!! read more

It's hard enough to find an automotive repair shop you can trust in your hometown, so what do you do when you are traveling and your car needs service? Ugh!!! Pull up Yelp and hope for the best. That's how I found Chang at Car Connex. We drove our family vehicle, a GMC Envoy Denali from Northern Virginia to Atlanta, and about 10 hours into our 11 hour trip the truck started to make a strange noise. Not sure of where to take it, we ended up at Car Connex. I was a little nervous since there were only a handful of Yelp reviews, and he seemed to specialize in Japanese imports. But all his reviews were 5 star, and a couple mentioned taking their domestic vehicles to him and he was close to where we were staying. So... I drove up without an appointment and noticed his little shop was pretty busy. Expecting to have to wait to be seen, Chang surprised me and took a look and listen immediately...on a Saturday morning...with a shop full of cars...the day before Easter...unbelievable! Of course the noise wan't present at the time, which may have made some mechanics say, too bad, come back if you hear it again, but not Chang. First he made a funny joke about how this happens when your kids have a weird symptom, so you take them to the doctor, but the symptom goes away. Huh, he has a sense of humor and is very personable. Anyway, he looked under the hood, listened to it while idling - the noise didn't come back. And then he wanted to take it for a ride. So, we took a 10 minute drive and he listened for any reason why the truck should not drive back the 600 plus miles and he couldn't find one. He had two recommendations for parts that should be monitored for future replacement - but made no effort to try to get me to get it done at his shop at his time. In fact, he didn't charge me for any part of his diagnosis - nothing at all. Amazing! Sorry for the long review, but I think it's important to compliment and recommend this level of automotive service. If I lived in this area, I would consider myself blessed to have an honest mechanic with a caring heart like Chang. read more

I took my car in for an engine light diagnosis. The employee checked it out and let me know what the issue was. He suggested that I should try taking it to my dealership first to see if I have it under warranty before paying to have it done. I REALLY appreciated the honesty and will be returning to Car Connex for any future services! It was a great service experience with Car Connex. I was a little nervous when walking in since I definitely have no knowledge of car. However mr Chang explained to me patiently. The price was cheaper as we'll. for changing the radiator it only costs less than 300. They also helped me to switch off my checking engine light and secure my beam light. he even gives us advice in term s of trading in and purchasing cars. I highly recommend to others. Chang was recommended to me by a friend years ago. He has worked on my vehicles for at least 4 or 5 years now, both a Ford and an Acura. I can not overstate how much I trust him. He always takes the time to explain in detail if there is anything wrong and usually even shows me on the part itself. He has had many opportunities to take advantage of me as a young woman who is clueless about cars, but he has never once done it. He has even done small things for me at no cost from time to time. I brought my Toyota Camry to this shop. There was no wait time when I arrived. Received an estimate. Then had my wife drop me off at work. I checked back around lunch time, and was surprised that thay had tracked the part down, installed it, and was ready for me to come pick it up. It was completed for less than he originally quoted. Thay fixed the harmonic balancer in my 20+ year old car. I also had a issue with my driver side door. I think he fixed that too. A+ service. I will be using them again. Thay never pressured me. Fast service and good prices. I went in to get my brakes serviced as I was getting some steering wheel vibration when braking at speed. My rotors were warped and pads not in the best condition. Car connex called and explained the situation, noting that while the pads were not in the best shape, I could in fact keep driving on them for a bit longer before replacing them. The fact that they honestly told me what was going on instead of just blindly replacing the brake pads is just about the best recommendation I can give. We took our car to the dealership and they could find nothing wrong with our a/c which only worked intermittently. We took it to Car Connex and $20 later we have an a/c that works perfectly! Chang at Car Connex is the best. I hesitate to write the review for selfish reasons because I don't want them to get too busy and not have time for my work. I know that will not be the case though because this shop is well run. I have taken all 4 cars that I own to Chang since 2004, when he was at the old location on Atlanta Road. I have had at least 10 major and minor repairs done by him and his team since then and they are always courteous, accurate on their analysis of the issue and priced very competitively. He has also fixed little issues that have come up at no charge. These guys do no look for unnecessary items that need to be fixed and scare people into getting more work than is needed. They do diagnose the issue at hand and let you know of maintenance items that may need to be addressed in the future. read more

Found this company on yelp. Had my vehicle (Lexus) towed there because of a sticking emergency brake problem. Now I see why there reviews are so good. They listened to what I said, confirmed it, fixed it, and because they felt it was so minor, didn't charge me, when they had every right to do so. Chang charged me a labor rate of $400 for an hour and a half. Don't get bamboozled in to a set rate on a repair as he doesn't tell you how long the repair is going to take. He told me it was an involved repair and it was not. So I got hosed for maybe $200 not a big deal but I trusted Chang so I'm disappointed he would try to make a buck on me since I have referred him business in the past. Get his estimates in writing (I didn't :[...). And hold him to the number of hours he says the job will take. I just don't want anyone else losing money. I went to Chang in Smyrna. My friend recommended him, so I took my car in to be fixed. He was very polite and actually fixed my car in 45 minutes (axle). I drove my car for a week and the same axle he put on my car was making a weird noise so I took it back to him. He checked it out and said that it was my shock. Funny!. I continue to drive my car and later went to the dealership to get a diagnostic and they said the axle was leaking, so I took the paperwork back to him. He just gave me an smirk smile. He then put my car up on the rack. Upon checking the car out he then retracted what he said the first time. I asked him about the noise it was making and he just said "funny" I don't know what that noise is. He then told me to bring it back in to be checked again. BEWARE! Chang and his crew are the BEST. Nobody else touches our cars since we found him four years ago. He is knowledgeable and honest. On one occasion when one of our cars would not start, I suspected fuel pump since the car has 105,000 miles on the odometer. Chang checked it out, determined that it was an ignition issue, fixed it in five minutes and charged me nothing. He said, "I know you will be back." Indeed we will. Ther car had been towed to Chang and I took a cab to work. He could have called me and said, "You were right, fuel pump, $400.00." I would not have known the difference. I think the bozo who was dissatisfied with Chang and gave Car Connex one star is probably a jealous competitor. Read all the other reviews and trust them. read more

After many trials and tribulations at a chain of auto shops, I was reluctant to use them. Seeing as this place had good reviews, I thought I would give them a shot. They were friendly and quick! And while my car has a squeaky timing belt that needs to be replaced, I've been to the aforementioned chain a few times and they never mentioned it, instead making sure to tell me that my fairly new wipers need to be replaced. Here I was told "That's your timing belt squeaking, you need to take care of that", without any prompting on my part. read more

I'm always skeptical when I see so many 5 star reviews but I went to Car Connex to "check it out for myself". I have a 2003 SUV with 210,000 miles and have been told by dealers for years that its only a matter of time and I should trade it in now. I required 3 simple repairs; an oil change, new front breaks and a side mirror glass replaced. I was prepared for an estimate of roughly $500-600 for the total, based on previous repairs, and a wait of 4+ hours. Mr. Chang did the oil change and break replacement in just under 2 hours which included having parts delivered. He said that he would need to get the mirror part but wanted to know if I preferred new or used. He explained that the cost difference was simply packaging and used was just as good for less money but would do whatever I preferred. In addition, he said he was impressed that I had had the vehicle in upstate NY for 8 years, had driven on heavily salted roads and it was in impeccable shape and he was sure it would last a few more years. He also brought out my old break system and fully explained the problem and solution, the total charge well under my expectation. As if that experience wasn't pleasant enough, the coffee shop in front of the Car Connex was amazing. It was REV Coffee, and I barely noticed the time while waiting for my truck. It was one of the best cups of coffee I have had in some time. In the end, Mr. Chang has, certainly in my opinion, earned every star received and then some; he is very pleasant, jovial and upstanding. read more

This place is great! I recently bought a car by myself for the first time and wanted to make sure I did it right, as it was a used car. I looked up mechanics in my area and saw the positive reviews here for Car Connex, and I was not let down. I called to make sure they were open and asked how much they'd charge for a vehicle inspection; to which the reply was "oh, there would be no charge." Really? Sounded good to me. I went by the shop with the Jeep I was planning on buying and was greeted by one of the mechanics, Margarito (I believe). He asked a few initial questions and popped the hood and did a quick look around, and told me I'd probably need some new shocks. Then, the presumable owner, Chang, came back from lunch. They both lifted the car and did a pretty thorough inspection to make sure there were no mechanical issues. Other than a few small things, they said it was in good shape and I ended up purchasing it! My boyfriend and I spent a good amount of time chatting with the mechanics and on our way out tried to give him a little money for his time. He refused and thanked us. Overall, a really great experience. Though I hope to never need a mechanic, when I do- this will be the spot where I return. read more

Chang is awesome. I took my car to three different shops because it was shaking (all reputable places too), and they all quoted me for new shocks/struts- about $1200. Chang said no, it's the bushings and sway bars. He took me under the car and showed them to me. He used a prop in his office to explain how it works. The repair is done, and he was right- no more shaking. I would have wasted $1200 at the other shops, instead I spent around $800 with Chang and got the repair I needed the first time! He also cleaned my headlamp lenses at no additional cost, he didn't even tell me, he just did it. How cool is that? read more

Excellent service and spot on diagnosis. The last time I took my 2001 PT Cruiser in for a squeak in the rear end. Chang found that I had not tightened the shock properly and that I had also left off the 710 plug when I changed my oil. He graciously tightened the shock and put back the plug. No Charge! Today the widow lady next door had a problem starting her 2005 Malibu. I had to have it towed to Car Connex and by the time I got there Chang was already working on it. By the time I got back home he was calling telling me it was fixed. Apparently it was a problem with the key and the Chevrolet security system and an easy fix. Again No Charge! Now I have taken other vehicles to Chang and paid for their repairs but his courteous manner and looking out for his customers goes a long way in my book. Chang is perhaps the best and most honest mechanic that I have come across in a while. I went to Car Connex for replacement of an Oxygen sensor on my old Camry. They ran complete diagnostics before replacing the sensor. The work was done within 30mins. I was very pleased with the fact that Chang told me how much time it'd take and the cost before service and that's what it took. Try this place if you're tired of switch and bait at other places. Car Connex is really great. Chang is very honest, does not manipulate things, and tells you things that you should know upfront. I went to get a few things fixed in a used Nissan Sentra that I had recently purchased. Chang took a good look and told me exactly the things that needed attention. i had got the car inspected by a different mechanic as well earlier, and he had told me a long list of things to be repaired. Chang just gave me a list of essential things and discarded many others that were pointed out by other mechanic. He talks about each thing that he wants to work on the car and shows the actual thing at fault. I really liked this approach. He then did the entire maintenance in 3-4 hours and gave me a reasonably good discount as well. I was really impressed. Plus, he always seems to have enough time to provide advice, even on the phone. And, he won't charge me for that. read more

Had a friend refer me to this shop, so I went and had my car serviced here. First off, the owner Chang is extremely rude. If you're a woman, don't bother going here because he talk to you like you're stupid. When I brought my car in, he was so sure it was an alternator issue.. charging me $400 for the part. It ended up not being the alternator and charged with $800 for timing belt and oil change. My engine oil started leaking excessively after he got done with the car so I called him letting him know what happened. His response "how do you know its engine oil, you're not a mechanic." Again... talks to you like you're stupid. If you want to be overcharged and be treated like an idiot, then this is the place to go! read more

Let me love you, Yelp and fellow Yelpers! Once again, you come through. We just moved to the ATL area. I told Chang and I needed a minor repair done. He said come in anytime. When I arrived, he got me in and out. I was able to grab a quick coffee from the coffee joint around the corner. By the time I got back, Chang and his staff were done. He didn't know me, my car is kinda a beater, so he had no real incentive (other than trying to get repeat customers) to treat me so well, but he did anyway. As we own two Japanese cars, this will be our reliable shop. Finding a new mechanic can be stressful; but, Yelp has made it so much easier! read more

I was in a huge bind as we had just moved here from California, and I had tried to start my car at the nearby Target, only to have it start shaking uncontrollably and dying. All of this at around 4 pm, when most mechanics are closing down. I quickly looked up nearby mechanics to bring my car to and found Car Connex. I rushed over as quickly as I could with my nearly broken down car. They immediately brought the car in the back and diagnosed the problem within 10 minutes. They called around to find the part, and they had the car all fixed first thing in the morning! They even brought me in the back to show me what was malfunctioning and told me they'd continue to check other parts that could be causing the issue. They could have told me 10 different things were wrong with my car, but they didn't. They told me the rest of the parts were fine, it was just a fan that was not running correctly. They really want to make sure you understand what is wrong with your car and how they think it went wrong. From what I could tell, they are very honest people, and I will be bringing my car back.
