Well this is definitely NOT one of those situations. I was in a rather desperate situation because the woman who usual does my braids was unavailable due to illness. So after searching yelp for someplace that is professional while being in my price range, I can upon Lady Leo Beauty Salon. I was able to make a same day appointment with Shenel, the resident hair braider and after previewing the pictures online, I was excited to get my summer style. I choose something simple and quick, cornrows of alternating size braided back into a bun. This was something basic that I didn't feel was easy to mess up. I did not get my hair washed or even blow dried, from start to finish my style which should have taken no more than two hours took over 4! I read the review of another helper about time being an issue for the, so this was no so surprising for me. After all quality takes time right? Wrong! After weather numerous comments by Shenel about how thin my edges were and dry my hair was (I had just taken out my kinky twists and my hair needed some TLC, which I tried to explain to her), I had to sit through her rough mishandling of my hair. I am not were near tender headed but I had to bite my tongue more than once. They braids were so tight I could not even touch the or bear to have her put them up into a bun. I told her they were tight and to her credit she tried to use steam to loosen them up. This did not work well and I have to take 825 mg of ibuprofen (a throw back from my Caesarean section this past winter). I left in pain and upset because she had braided on the very baby hairs which she complained were too thin. By then I was so tired I just wanted out. I paid the 80 fee ( nowhere near worth the style I received) forewent a tip and hurried out of the shop vowing not to return. I am writing this review a week after my experience because the pain from the tight braids remains and I am upset that I wasted my money because I now have to take out the braids that I received only last Monday! The cornrows which she placed on my baby hairs literally detached from my head from the stress of being braided too tight. Please do make the same mistake I did, please go elsewhere for your braids. Please see the attached pictures as a cautionary tale from my experience.

After moving to NY, I was very apprehensive about finding someone to do my hair. But, I'm so glad I stumbled across her shop (after several terrible experiences elsewhere). She is definitely the only one in NYC I will let touch my hair! Karen really takes the time to talk with her clients about their hair and figures out a hair care plan and style that is suitable for ultimate growth. She also has several treatments (oil and protein) that she encourages her clients to use to perpetuate healthy hair and growth. Beyond that, she is extremely friendly and accommodating (she has squeezed me in on short notice when I desperately needed it, something I really appreciate it). Also, she is all about doing what's in the best interest of your hair! So, she's not afraid to let her clients know when a style or color request may be damaging to the hair--a very important characteristic to have as a hair care professional! I think the prices are reasonable, and there are no surprises, as all the rates are listed on the wall. I typically get full sew-ins which take approx. 4.5 hours, but are well worth the time! You can't rush quality, which is definitely what you can expect to receive. I am constantly complimented on my hair every time I get it done! So, definitely check out the salon! It was then that I learned that her and her husband bought the salon. 2nd time I came she told me that they weren't accepting loyalty cards granted mine was already half way punched. The new owner told me, I can finish my loyalty card and pay $25 to get my hair done mind you I was paying $20 to get my hair done. The third encounter with her she's still on the phone yelling at someone, then her son is there so she's screaming even more. When it comes time to pay, she told me I have to pay $30 to get my hair done and that I can't use my loyalty card even though I have more punches left. As much as I love my beautician and have been going to her for over 15 years, I'm going to another place. This new owner is insensitive, and I'm pretty sure she's going to lose more customers. I've been going to this salon off and on for years. I've had decent experiences with them in general. My hair texture is easy to manage (3b-c). It's natural and while I have a lot, it doesn't require a lot to get straight. So a wash and set is all I need. The reason for this negative review is that I recently started taking my 6 year old daughter for blowouts. She has been about 3 times. Her hair texture is considerably more course than mine (4a). It is (or should I say 'was') thick and beautiful. Her Afro-puffs were perfect, enviable, huge round puffs of cotton. Not any more. During the last visit, both my daughter and I came for blowouts. The salon was nearly empty so we had different stylists. The stylist who tended to my daughter was feeling her hair and simultaneously asking "are you gonna be a good girl today?" Not sure what she was talking about I piped in, "she is always a good girl." The stylist said, "I just meant while I blow it, it gets hot." I said, "Again, she always is a good girl, she really enjoys getting her hair straightened so she is a good sport about the process." They went to the shampoo bowl. I was already past that point and getting rollers in my hair and about to go under the dryer. So I didn't observe my daughter's shampoo process. I regret that now. My daughter's hair turned out great. Straighter than ever. Definitely more straight than when I do it at home. I drummed it up to the professionals being professional. I didn't wash her hair for 2 weeks (judge me, it's a thing :)) and my daughter's hair never reverted. 6 year old girl, doing 6 year old play, sweat and all and there was barely any curly edges. Peculiar? Yes... but I didn't think too much about it. It wasn't until I washed her hair that I realized that something was really wrong. 3 shampoos. And her hair would not curl. Stringy, straight hairs all over her head. 6 years of loving up on each of her curls, I know exactly what her hair is like, and...like that... it was changed! I did a Deep conditioning treatment. And her hair still wouldn't curl the way it previously did. Soft, puffy, fluffy, hair gone. And her hair had this awful chemical smell to it. 3 shampoos and a deep conditioning treatment and this weird smell clung to her hair. I was convinced at that point that the salon did something irreversible to her hair. I went to the salon and explained my concerns to the same ladies in the shop I have always seen and talked to every time I have visited, but now they didn't understand my English. So they called a woman who supposedly owned the salon and spoke better English, who expectedly denied any wrongdoing. It's heartbreaking really. So beware. This business is up to funny business. I definitely will never return. I'll be using all the natural hair care tips I've gained over the years to try and repair the damage done to my daughter's continually breaking hair. And telling EVERYONE I know about our experience.

I booked online and sent the $45 deposit via CashApp, which was the cost of the entire service. I don't actually own a blow dryer, so I washed my hair and brushed it out until it was straight-ish, and that was fine. My partner had a separate appointment and detangled his hair, but they charged him an additional blow drying fee (I don't think he brushed his hair out like I did, maybe that's why?). I showed up about 15 minutes early in the middle of a heat wave, Cece offered me a cold water, and Stephenie started working on me right away. She blow dried my hair a little bit more, with minimal heat. Stephenie was super communicative and showed me what she wanted to cut off. The trim wasn't really noticeable from a distance, which is exactly what I wanted. The salon itself is small and neat, and Stephenie and Cece are super friendly. I'll be back for my next trim in 3 months!
