There are no "off nights" at this place....because it is ALWAYS garbage. The owner Giuseppe Bruno is perhaps the rudest, most self-important and obnoxious proprietor on the UES...total jerk to all (even regulars such as my family). Food is nothing more than average. Often customers will wait ages for food that has clearly been sitting under a heat lamp while inattentive servers lollygag around. SKIP IT AT ALL COSTS!!!! Do yourself a favor and go to Sette Mezzo or Vico for UES Italian food instead...or better yet go right across the street to Come Primo. You'll be treated better and have better food at each of these altertative establishments. And you won't have to deal with owner Giuseppe Bruno...who is a total jerk to all!!!! read more

I had my wedding in Central Park, it was a small wedding and I was looking for a nice restaurant with a private area to hold my reception. This place did not disappoint. The amazing Selby helped me arrange everything from flowers to my cake and it was such an easy, seamless process. My cake (a cupcake tier), was exactly as I wanted it and was soooo delicious. I went to this place for dinner with my family on a recommendation from my hotel, The Mark. I loved the decor and the atmosphere. The issue I had was with staff. After getting the NY Strip for my guests (that was extremely Chewy and undercooked) I was told that I should bring it home and that "they have the best steak in NYC".......which they don't. We graciously asked them to take it back and ordered another main course. Upon doing so they added the original order onto the bill. When asked they apologized and came back with the same bill and said there was nothing they could do about it. Sadly I will say that for this reason I will never recommend this to anyone I know. Decided to have an impromptu Saturday lunch al fresco at Caravaggio. Was not disappointed. If you thought salads were boring, try the exquisite arugula and lettuce salad with hazelnut dressing. That was my wife's choice. I began with carpaccio, beautifully sliced, with thin wedges of cheese and capers. Could not have been improved. We then had parchetti with cherry tomatoes, basil and tomato sauce--simple and elegant-- and fettuccini prima vera, with fresh peas, fava beans, tiny cauliflower and other vegetables, in a mild EVO and butter emulsion. Again, simple and elegant and delicious. For dessert we shared a construction with a chocolate base and pistachio ice cream, studded with tiny meringue kisses and wild strawberries from Malaga and a few tiny candied orange peel juliennes. It was the pièce de résistance, elaborate and delicious. The service was very friendly and professional. Caravaggio is not a high-end foodie franchise. The chef who gets the credit is actually the chef who makes your meal. Lunch for two with a Bloody Mary, an iced tea and 2 espressos came to $210 with a decent tip. I started with the Calamari Salad, which was served sauteed and fresh and topped with a red wine vinaigrette. It was a winner. The breadsticks here were the best part of my meal. Those things are about as long as a person's forearm. And they're nice and crunchy and I swear they must lace it with crack because I am usually so controlled around that sort of stuff. Not this time though; I probably had about six or seven breadsticks before we were even served drinks. The wine was also yummalicious, but my uncle got a few of their most expensive bottles of white and red, so there you go. Initially the waiters were slow in refilling, but once the meal commenced, my glass was always full. So my initial frustration was replaced with a nice and happy buzz. As for the actual food? Totally not worth the price when there are so many other Italian restaurants in the city that serve better food at cheaper prices. Hell, just go to Eataly and you'll get fresher and tastier cheeses and pastas that are cooked al dente. Their fresh buffalo mozzarella was okay, but didn't blow me away like some places. My uncle loved it, but he was also well on his way to getting drunk. I ordered the homemade penne in tomato sauce with melted mozzarella on top. It was essentially a penne alla vodka, and a bland one at that. The top pieces of penne were dried out and cracked. They were tough to chew. And this is my opinion of it with three glasses of wine in me. Usually I'm a lot more appreciative of food when I've got booze in my system, but an Italian cannot overlook poorly prepared pasta. And it was NOT al dente. More on the mushier side. I think the only redeeming part of my dish was the broccoli rabe that came as a side and the partially burnt mozzarella (I like my cheeses when they're browned and crunchy). The broccoli rabe was sautéed and spicy. My grandpa stole the rest of my side when I wasn't looking. Speaking of my grandpa, we came here for his birthday. The staff gave us all tiramisu for dessert and everyone at the table polished it off (again, there was a lot of booze). I had about two spoons of it. I'm not sure what it was about the dessert, but I was not a fan. It, too, was bland in taste. the mouthfeel wasn't very appealing either. They also gave us three plates of cookies. Nobody touched them, but I tried one of the macarons. It wasn't bad, but it was stick to your teeth chewy. This place is great if you get their private room. There's lots of artwork to look at while you're chatting with friends and family. The lighting is on the dimmer side, which lends to the intimate atmosphere. I think this place would be nice for a few drinks...not so much for food. Waitstaff was attentive, which is why I'm giving this place 2stars instead of 1. The food though...the food just did not live up to the fancy names or the price. read more

The decoration is chic and modern, with artworks very tastefully arranged. I thought I was in for an amazing dinner. Unfortunately, the food was very mediocre. The pasta and fish entrees both had fancy names but bland flavors. The salad and butternut squash soup were better, but still not impressive. The servers at the table were prompt and didn't let my wine glass empty (always a plus). The other staff though, like the hosts, were standoffish... Caravaggio is definitely a nice dinner spot, so I wouldn't swing by to grab drinks and enjoy the atmosphere. Beautiful space have eaten here both times with 6 or more people have tried almost every dish for the price nothing ever stood out not the bass or the steak , short ribs. The service good but not friendly. The last time we used the coat check where we also checked some wine glasses in gift bags. When we left the coat check girl never gave us the glasses and we forgot to ask for them. We called 2 days later they said they will hold them for us to pick up. When we showed up 5 days later they said someone must have thrown them out not an apology , free drink nothing, bad, bad form for a place where we dropped at least 2k each time. Once we've had a chance to settle in and order beverages, the waiter comes over and begins his 10 hour soliloquy on the specials for the night. Seriously, it felt like the specials list was longer than the actual menu. For the appetizer - asparagus with fried egg and shaved black truffles. When I was actually served the dish, I didn't realize it was literally asparagus with fried egg and shaved truffles. Three limp stalks of asparagus topped with a fried egg (like you get in a diner) and shaved black truffles. Not a hint of salt anywhere on the dish. No technique that went into producing good asparagus or a well cooked egg. No black pepper. Nothing. Literally three ingredients on a plate. It was bland, flavorless and god only knows how much it was (work dinner so I didn't pay). By far one of the saddest dishes I've ever eaten. For the entree, I ordered the cod with clams in lemon sauce. For a fish dish at a restaurant like this, it wasn't bad. Well cooked but overly salted here for my taste. The lemon sauce could have been more lemony and the wilted lettuce added nothing to the dish. Decent but nothing to write home about. For dessert, I had the Oops! Tart is Dropped. Nice balance of sweet, tart, savory. I liked the freeze dried berries to go along with fresh ones. The hazelnut tart had enough bite and crunch to complement the other components of the dish. After a disappointing start to the meal, I was happy to have had this. In a city with so many options, I don't think I could ever justify coming here on my own dime, nor would I suggest others to spend their money on me here. read more

I am a frequent dinner because of business entertainment. I had not heard of Caravaggio but was excited when I read a review in NYT'S and decided to take clients there. What a disappointment! Although the restaurant looked nice and the staff pleasant, the food was not up to even a minimum standard. There were 4 of us and we all had issues with our meal. We started with a pasta course that was undercooked, the pasta was not al dente but HARD. Two of us then had a veal chop that was overcooked and had a cardboard texture; my two other guests had fish that was also severely overcooked and dry. I had the gnocchi and fall salad - both of which are incredibly delicious. The atmosphere was perfect. Why didn't they get 5 stars? When we made the reservations its was a 50$ per person fee to cancel, and they emphasized not being late multiple times at the risk of loosing our table. We arrived early and were seated at the bar until the table was ready. 30 minutes past our reservation we checked in with the staff and they were very rude as if we weren't waiting. If I'm being honest, I'm most comfortable in my sweats, eating pizza, accompanied with a glass of sangria (really not a beer person). But every so often, who doesn't love to get wined and dined? This is where my fiancé and I love to go. (He even proposed here!) The staff greets you upon entering and every single person has a smiling face. The food is PHENOMENAL. Don't even look at the menu and trust the chef. He will knock your socks off. I didn't think I could get stuffed off of such small dishes-sorry, but the pricier the meal, the less the give you. I can't believe I am writing this review. I went to Caravaggio today for lunch with a group of 30. The food was fair, not great but the service was terrible. They were short handed but did know in advance we were coming. The service was slow and the attitude of the maitre d was uncaring when we complained. I have never had such poor service. Paying $42 for lunch when 4 of the 6 choices choices were pasta is not a way to get repeat business. I would not recommend this place. read more

Caravaggio is very pretty inside, smells great, and the staff is professional and attentive. However the food left a lot to be desired. The shrimp scampi special was too salty, the farfalle pasta dish had too much garlic, and the risotto with gorgonzola cheese and peas was overpowered by the gorgonzola sauce. Granted, gorgonzola is a strong cheese, but it could have been balanced out better. After a strawberry shortcake dessert that fell flat, we were presented with a large bill, that showed that one of our entrees, the crab legs, was $60. This had been one of the specials, and was twice the price of any other entree on the menu, which the waiter should have told us. He did hint that the truffle entree special was quite pricey, probably meaning closer to $100, but I think if a special is twice the price of a normal menu item, the waiter should let the diners know. I know this is a fancy UES restaurant, and I was expecting a large bill, but I was also expecting the food to be delicious and memorable, which is was not. read more

Saturday night with friends. 8 pm reservation. 3/4 of the tables seated were on dessert (apparently having enjoyed an imaginary early bird special). There were many, many specials. An overwhelming amount, and all with complexities. (of the 'dusted with white truffles and chestnut' variety). The wine list was huge, but all hugely overpriced. Ended up with burrata (nice, light and well seasoned) and a wonderful lamb ragu over pasta. Service was terrific, as noted, but there were several items out on the menu. Not the waiter's fault but still.. It was a lovely dinner but truly in the dining environment we are in today, not worth the price. Oh, and by 10-10:30 there were about 5 tables left seated. read more
