Had reservations for a Thursday evening at 5:30 pm. It was empty when I got there except for a few other patrons. However, by 6 pm, it was packed! So definitely recommend reservations. We sat outside since the weather was nice and had a lovely little evening here! Our server was great and recommended our entire meal + drinks. We split the burrata pizza, vodka pasta, and got the profiteroles for dessert, which included a table-side chocolate pour. When friends or relatives visit me in the city, I often take them to Uva Next Door, a neighborhood favorite that always impresses. As I am a creature of habit, I always order either one of these three items from the menu: the veal agnolotti, the tagliatelle bolognese, and the pizza funghi e salsiccia. All of these dishes are delicious. Both pastas are creamy with a nice, hefty chew, a signifier of pastas made fresh on site. The pizza has that very umami taste that you often get from high-quality mushrooms. This dimly lit restaurant buzzes with conversation and music, which can make it harder to hear your companions as it can get quite loud. This may be fine for younger guests, but I find it not as comfortable for some, more older, individuals or anyone with hearing sensitivities. Another update and this time, not for martini Monday! Shocking, I know! I brought my mom and sister here Thursday before seeing a show at the York Theater. We got a last minute reservation and were seated right away. The service was fantastic and everyone loved the food and drinks that they got. I had the penne a la vodka for the first time and added burrata. It was so delish and a vegetarian dish. The burrata made it so creamy and truly took it to the next level. Vesper was great and the wine menu complimented the food making a good selection easy. Beet tartar, shrimp caprese for apps didn't disappoint. The lamb ragu was perfect and one guest had the GF lasagna and was delighted. Ordered the polenta cake for desert for something different and it was excellent. We were seated outside in the corner closest to the street. There seats were definitely crammed in - the nicest part was due to being in the corner we only felt like we were eating with one couple instead of 2+. This is very common in NYC, so not going to penalize UVA Next Door for this although I do think it played into some service related issues we had later in the night. Otherwise ambiance was nice and definitely a trendy type spot. The food was delicious. We started with the Steak Bruschetta and Meatballs Next Door, both were fantastic. Drinks came shortly before our appetizers. The pizza was my partners entree and it came out about 5 minutes prior to my pasta which was a little bizarre but fine. The server did apologize for the delay and I was able to enjoy a slice while waiting for my meal. My pasta was perfectly cooked - seafood (octopus, shrimp) was fantastic. As advertised there was a little bite. We ordered another round of drinks with dinner and were looking forward to sharing a dessert. We wrapped the second half of our pizza (which was going to make for a nice lunch) and ordered the ravioli dessert. We were brought 1 plate and 2 spoons but the rocky road ravioli never followed. We tried to get the attention of anyone which proved difficult due to our seat. It appeared our server was sent home or something because we couldn't find her and the other coverage people ignored us. When we finally got the attention of someone (it had been almost 30 minutes) we just requested the check. I had to go inside and track someone down on our way out to get them to remove the missing Rocky Road Ravioli from our bill. They were apologetic and asked if we wanted it wrapped up to go but at that point we were over it. We did stop for ice cream on our way home to scratch that itch as the neighborhood has plenty of options in that regard. It was disappointing as this was our first time at UVA Next Door and we had enjoyed meals at UVA previously. We'll be back again at some point to give them a second try and will definitely be paying more attention to the service. read more

Our server Moro (unsure of spelling) was so friendly and attentive throughout, and the server that took over later, Luciano, was also good. It's not a place to linger over a quiet meal. This may have been partially due to restaurant week, but the high energy fast moving vibe was pervasive. Having said that, the food was really good. The calamari was fried perfectly- crisp and light. My wife swooned over her meatballs and chicken parm. The veal paillard was very good and relatively light. The torta was like a very good brownie. The spot is a lot more crowded and chaotic than I had expected. The tables are right on top of each other so it's difficult to get around, and the waiters are running to and fro trying not to bump into the seated guests. It's not the waiters faults but rather just the layout of the restaurant. The waiters themselves are super accommodating though, albeit seemingly stressed. I am an avid Italian foodie and I can't say anything too bad about the pasta, except that the portions are a little small. Especially with the price point, the portions do not feel big enough. I would've liked more basil on it and to be cooked well done but that's a next time request. I wouldn't get the plenty cake again it was dry and I didn't taste the orange. My sister got the pear salad without goat cheese, the cauliflower steak, and the donut holes (to bring home to my mom lol). The salad came without cheese and she liked it. The cauliflower steak came out with the steam still on and she said a lot of the pesto was on it so the cauliflower was dry. She was still hungry after because it was half a cauliflower with no sides. My mom said the donuts were meh. Mixed reviews from the normal and gluten free/vegan crowd. I wouldn't rush back. The service was great and the plates were taken quickly when we were finished. While we were waiting for the waitress to come for the check one of the bus boys came over to wipe down our table which I thought was odd since we were still there and he missed most of the crumbs on the table. One of the things I love is that if you come here on a Monday, all the Martinis you can drink are $4 with the purchase of any entree. Isn't that great? i really wanted to add uva next door to our weekly/monthly rotation because the food was delish, but a mistake clearly happened with allergy protocols. for those who NEED to eat gluten-free, the menu is labeled for GF items and the staff said all the right things, but there was some serious cross contamination or we received a gluten dish that was supposed to be gluten-free because my celiac husband vomited our 3 course meal when we got home, followed by a migraine. the 2 stars is for the friendly/helpful service and the yummy food for those who don't have food allergies. read more

We came here as a party for four at 6:15 on a Monday. The service was excellent. We were a group of four girls getting together after a long time and had a lot to discuss. Our waiter was great and extremely patient with us when it took us a few tries to decide what we wanted and he gave us great suggestions. When there was some miscommunication on ordering and the wrong dish came out. He immediately took the dish back and brought out the right one. The $4 babytinis were delicious. I enjoyed the Next Door Meatballs. The four, full-size meatballs were super flavorful in a sweet marinara sauce. The side dallop of ricotta was excellent. It also came with a slice of house made foccacia. My entree was the Gnocchi Di Ricotta. I honestly can say it was one of the top 5 meals I've ever ate. So so flavorful and good. I wish I had bread to dip in my leftover sauce at the end, LOL! My girlfriends got the Chicken Parm Xl and the Garganelli Alla Vodka. The Chicken Parm was your standard tasting Chicken parmesean. Sweet sauce, tasty, and they don't say "XL" for nothing! The garganelli alla vodka was standard as well. The pasta was al dente in a classic vodka sauce. For dessert we all got the olive oil cake. I had never had olive oil cake before but I've heard its a fan favorite at many restaurants. It was quite good! We had espresso martinis with our cake. Definitely not the best espresso martini I have ever had but still I was able to drink it. Our server seemed pretty distracted and all over the place, but that didnt take away from our night. Finally had the chance to walk in and indulge on their great Monday Special - $4 martini (1.5 oz) with any order of entree, pizza, or pasta. My friend and I ordered a margherita pizza and tagliatelle bolognese to share. The pizza was standard - can't go wrong with tomato, mozz, and basil. I definitely enjoyed the tagliatelle bolognese - not sure if it was the noodles or meat sauce but it was drenched in butter. NOT complaining because it was delicious but the butter flavor was STRONG. It was restaurant week so you know what that means. It means going out way too much, spending too much, and eating too much. In this instance, a friend of mine and I got together at this place. She chose it because it was near where she works. It's also near where I live so it was perfect. I got there a bit later than her but still relatively on time. It'd been a long time since we saw each other so seeing each other is always nice. Since it was restaurant week, we get 3 courses pre-fixe menu. I got the salmon tartare and she got the eggplant burrata (she is vegetarian). The salmon tartare was fresh and not overpowering in terms of fish taste. She liked her appetizer as well. She said the eggplant was seasoned well and went well with the burrata. We both got the orechiette with pesto. I don't know what they did to it but it was some of the best pesto I've ever had. It was fresh, vibrant, not too creamy, not too much basil, just perfect. I don't think we planned on eating the whole thing but I'm pretty sure I did. I think she got full about halfway through so she took the rest home. For dessert, she got the torta caprese, which is flourless chocolate and walnut brownie with ice cream. I got the olive oil cake since I'm always curious about olive oil cake. I think my friend died and went to heaven after eating her dessert. She said it was amazing and she wished she had the stomach room for it. My olive oil cake was a little crumbly from the polenta, but it had that orange flavor to it and it was just that touch of sweetness that was perfect for the end of a meal. By the end of it, we were both so stuffed that we had to go walk it off. It was very busy for a Monday night so make a reservation. Service was fast and the waitress made sure we got everything we needed. I would say for multiple course meals, that it's nice when they wait a while before bringing your next course. We need time to digest. But I will return for that pesto pasta and that olive oil cake, restaurant week or not. read more

Everything is so reasonably priced aside from the Diet Coke. It was $22 for a big pizza, and pasta dishes are in the low $20s. Considering it's all homemade it's priced very well.
