I made another appointment for a different optometrist last week was cancelled due to the blizzard. I had to have two appointments. One on Wednesday for the exam then return on Thursday for the contact lenses. I was able to do it all during one visit at Dr Gunderson's office. The office is a bit small but Costco isn't going to give up any more precious floor space than they have to. I thought it was weird to make an eye doctor appointment at a Costco but it turned out to be one of the best appointments I've had at an optometrist. Doesn't seem like they are able to bill a lot of insurance plans. My insurance approved them but they can't bill my insurance. No real big deal as the whole appointment for contact lenses including the retinal photo was only $149. I'll submit for reimbursement. Although it was a very quick appointment, I did not feel rushed. Everything was explained to me and was thoroughly impressed. Anyone who has a hesitation, like I did, about not going to a "real doctor office", should feel at ease.

The doctor was also friendly, professional and explained everything clearly it is amazing how technology has advanced since I was 16 and got my first pair of John Lennon style glasses in 1966. After the exam was finished, and (I'm sorry I can't remember her name or the doctor's name) the front desk worker showed me the various frames told me how much they would cost. Truly upfront about costs. She measured me for the frames I picked out. Everyone was friendly, and knows what they are doing. They all take time with you so you know you matter to them. Then the glasses that I got were not good, I could not see very good with them and the frames did not feel good. They did let me get another pair at no charge and they are working now, otherwise I would have given them 0 stars. Now to the money part! I have insurance and my copay for the glasses was $338. They told me that otherwise my visit with new glasses was going to be over $1,500! Which I know is way too high. But anyway I paid the $338. Then about 45 days later, I got a bill from them for $60. I called their billing and asked why and they could not tell me why. Just that insurance did not pay enough. So I called my insurance and asked them about it and they said that it was all paid and there should not be another bill. I called Myeye again and talked to someone else (you can't get the same person) and I got the same answer, I just owed $60 and need to pay it. Next, I called my insurance again and the insurance lady and I got on a 3 way call with Myeye billing again and they talked while I listened and the Myeye person could not explain it to the insurance lady why I still owed money. So he said he would put it on a 60 day hold and try to figure it out. Now, it has been over 60 days and I never heard anything more from them at all. Until yesterday, I got a bill from Myeye with no explanation again and says I owe $60. So now I start the *&^%$#@! all over again. Stay away from Myeye!

The new lenses were a little off. They made me a little dizzy walking around with them. I told the optician my concerns, but her responses were repeatedly a dismissive "weird" and "interesting." Only saying they were the same prescription. Fine, but I could not see as well as the original ones. Even after I mentioned that I've had glasses not right at other places, they had been able to adjust them perfectly, and could she try that? She made a slight adjustment to the nose piece and told me to wear the lenses for a few days. That was silly, as I should be able to see through them as perfectly as the originals...and they made me dizzy! The fact that she was so unwilling to help was incredibly frustrating. Ultimately, I had to refuse the new lenses and have my old ones put back in. Her immediate "okay" showed a complete lack of concern. I am disappointed that spending $700 gets me this kind of customer service. If I could have seen clearly, I obviously would have walked away with them. I drove from Boulder to get them. She was completely unconcerned that these did not work for me. Glasses are expensive. Go somewhere where your vision is important to them.

When the optical part of my doctor's office closed, I needed to look elsewhere. I wanted to find a place that accepted my vision insurance (VSP). They were able to recommend frames that fit my face and would work with progressive lenses. I don't know about you, but I get overwhelmed when I go into an optical store and have to choose frames. I love how Third Avenue Eyecare sent an email prior to the visit asking me to visit their website to check out potential frames. I then submitted my choices which were available to try on at the appointment. That is so customer friendly and made things so much more efficient! Questionable/shady billing practices and bad record keeping…read more My family had met the out of pocket maximum on our medical insurance. I had already sent a child and gone myself to appointments (annual for the child with glasses, my following up on a now long term concussion) and insurance covered those appointments. I had no reason to believe that annual, regular (preventative) exams would not be covered. (I had believed that it would be part of our medical, not having used this under our current insurance before -- our plan with Kaiser included annual optometrist checks -- and Dr. Nunn was listed as an in network medical provider on the insurance page with no notations for how that would be covered despite my being logged in AND we had met our family out of pocket maximum). They have paperwork with a variety of clauses but it was verbally altered to include that the regular exam may not have inclusion of all the tests they use. I figured even $50 for additional testing they believe necessary might be okay since I otherwise should have no liability. In addition, when I walked in for the first set of appointments (2 children each date, one week apart), I was told they couldn't confirm my insurance so I actually called member services, confirmed they were in network and that the standard exam should be covered -- I noted what it was for and my expectations -- and then put the receptionist in touch with the insurance company. (Did I mention I sent the insurance information to them ahead of the appointments?) Fast forward 3 weeks and I get a bill for over $500 for the first 2 appointments. Now, here is the problem: The receptionists did not have the knowledge to answer my insurance coverage questions, and instead just rushed me to add my initials to the several disclaimers on their paperwork. When I asked about the refraction exam disclaimer (which notes that some insurances do not cover it) , they simply said "that might not be covered." (I took that specific risk but the clause that insurance may not cover standard exam seemed extraneous based on the phone call to member services and sending the info along to reception.) As I continued to fill the paperwork, I did everything, and then proceeded with the routine exams. The exams seemed fine, Dr. Nunn seemed mostly good (she had missed something on my exam but a specialist caught it so maybe it was just an unusual catch for low level reading glasses adjustment -- huge for my concussion related migraines but not necessarily super regular need). Now, however, her billing representative told me that since there are so many insurance plans they can't possibly know ahead of time if there is coverage. This ignores that they had previously billed the same insurance for myself and one of my other children (prior to our meeting our deductible and out of pocket max) and they had those accounts to guide at least some knowledge of the plan. They also have an electronic system to connect to my insurer and could have checked before the day of service. I have now paid over $1000 for four appointments. Her biller left me a message that if there were symptoms like headaches, that could change the insurance coverage. First, one of my kids did note that several times so they didn't make proper notes that day and second, this seems to be asking me to note symptoms after the fact to deal with their incompetence with the insurance (and someone less scrupulous may have made something up and participated in insurance fraud). The total bill was over $200 more, by the way, than the private pay cost that I was offered (at the same time I was asked about symptoms in a voicemail that I have retained) which was revoked with no notice.  The office may look fancy but their billing and record keeping practices (in my experience) are a real question.
